Passion2009: Visa was approved this morning in Lagos. Big thanks to this forum.
Transcript.
VO: Next person, come forward(he had just denied the person in front of me and I was trying to get my mood in order).
Me: Good morning. Hands over passport and I-20.
VO: When did you graduate from your university in Nigeria?
Me : 2019
VO: What did you study?
VO: International Affairs and Global Politics
V0: Have you ever been to the U.S before?
Me: Yes.
VO: Who is sponsoring your education?
Me: I have a scholarship offer from the University of P and my mentor will cover the remaining deficits.
VO: Reaches out for a white paper and that was it!
I cannot rule out the place of God in this interview. I barely spoke for 30seconds and I did not even use any of the 'punchlines' I had rehearsed. Almost everyone that comes to the embassy has a reason to travel alongside supporting documents. It all now boils down to how convincing these reasons are and how well you are capable of avoiding loopholes when presenting your case. For instance, a woman I saw in the interview room was queried by the VO for spending over 10weeks during her last visit to the U.S and the woman responded that she had malaria. The VO exclaimed and he was like "MALARIA, IN AMERICA? I knew that was certainly a pink paper and it was no brainer. I think being confident, calm, honest and not appearing too desperate also plays a crucial role. And I think: some VOs are more lenient than others. Finally, It appears there is a conscious plan to reduce the number of Nigerians that come to the U.S through all visa types. A vast majority of the people I saw at the embassy were denied and it is all down to the faults of fellow Nigerians who abuse their visiting/student visas and the idiots who engage in internet fraud. Our leaders and we the citizens have also failed to make our country a place worthy to be called home.
Thank you nairalanders and good luck to everyone. Remember, put God first and get him involved. Ok stop. You barely presented a case at all and still got your visa, so no it doesn’t simply depend on how you present your case or “god”. This is why folks here waste their time rehearsing transcripts they won’t need. It simply depends on whether the VO was convinced that you are a bonafide student and you have the funding to cover your costs without resorting to public funds. Getting a full scholarship and a research fellowship to cover your full costs was the biggest factor in your case. I would refrain from pontificating on the flaws in others at the consulate simply because you’ve now got your visa. We should always put God first, even for mundane things like eating, not just when we need a visa. |

veinless: in naira, as last week monday, d balance was 12million buh the bank was unable to print out the statement, so my sponsor left the bank in annoyance, he recently made a huge withdrawal to finance a project on friday, i already fill his details in ds160 and submitted , pls is there anything i can do , can i change sponsor? N47,000 is nothing and you won’t get through the interview with such a paltry amount unless you have secured funding to defray most if not all of your schooling costs. First question - who is this sponsor? Do they really have the funds to make available to you should you need it? Going to America to study is a whole lot more than getting the visa. Defaulting on your bills in the US is a very serious problem so be very sure that you have emergency funds available. Sure you can change your sponsor to whoever you want. You can even borrow one temporarily to obtain a visa if you’d like. |

Abdulrahmon68: To be candid, you actually sound good in vetting transcript, but unfortunately you have jettisoned this good trait of yours a long time ago. I personally would be glad to have you back on this thread with other gurus in vetting applicant's transcript.
Thumbs up. I pop up to say a word or two once in a while but my personal view, if you ask me, is that vetting transcripts is way overrated. If you are a serious student, did most of the work yourself and are honest, you should have no problem answering the visa interview questions. Most of us need vetting because we didn’t do the work and this is simply a route to emigrate. So we rely on the words of others to get us through what should be a relatively straightforward process. 15 years ago there was nothing like vetting transcripts, students still obtained f1 visas. No one should really be vetting your answer on why you chose your course of study. It is your decision, your destiny. |

LagosismyHome: You have a point regarding how some Nigerians practise our Christianity. I know a lady here who is living "illegally " , she goes to work everyday working "illegally" but she is a pastor.... for me i cant understand how she can be a pastor. A true Christian doesnt choose to be godly in terms of how they pray and ungodly in everyday to day living Thank you. You’ve candidly expressed my concern. It’s not uncommon here to see people praying for grace and calling on “glory” when they paid bribes to expedite their passports, are presenting false SOAs and clearly lying at their interview. I’m not sure how we got to the point where we treat our faith as a buffet. If we did things right in the first place, it’s not out of reason to think we may even get to a point where, like citizens of other countries, traveling the world does not require a 7-day dry fasting and prayer... just a passport and a ticket. |

Time2win: Why do you use small for "God" Because to be frank, the “god” being invoked here is a figment of the imagination of many who have relegated God to no better than a visa approver. The same God you pray to is the same God the Americans pray to as well. That same God says we should be respectful of government authority, including US visa rules. |

Olumuyiwalasode: it's your headache, keep ranting about people involving God in their process, since you obviously are the only one here with "Christ's nature". Your tone basically exposes you. Emergency “Christians”. Galatians 5:20 would be a good start. Your invocation of “god” is no better than Aladdin’s lamp and his genie. |

Predstan: Why do we pray? If God knows all our needs?? The question isn’t why we pray... that is clearly answered in the Bible. It’s that we (Nigerians) only “pray” when we need something like money or visas. We don’t seem to pray for anything else. James also reminds us that God doesn’t always grant us our needs because too often they are wants to consume on our own lusts. I meet Nigerians here in Houston all the time. They are a complete contrast to Nigerians here. It seems as soon as we get the visa, prayer no longer matters and ”god” becomes relegated to the background, until we need another visa. |

Olumuyiwalasode: I've never seen you here rendering assistance on various visa transcripts being posted here, you only come here looking for one sort of fault or another when it comes to people's acknowledgment of God in their visa process. no matter the preparation one does, there's always a place for acknowledging God, and seeking for his grace, so don't come here always acting like a bitter soul! You sound bitter, I’m not. Simply making an observation which obviously hit you the wrong way hence the overly aggressive response from you. All it takes is one post to remove the mask of false religion, to reveal your true nature. God isn’t impressed. There would be no need to “render assistance” on visa transcripts if indeed our professed faith on here is who we truly are... that we are honest, faithful and truth seekers. Germans don’t need visa transcripts, yet we who call on “god” the most do. Think on it. |

The obsequiously religious nature of posts here never stops puzzling me. It’s almost as if every Nigerian suddenly finds “god” when it comes to visa applications. You can barely read 2-3 consecutive posts without running into gushy phrases like “it shall end in praise”, “glory”... what in the world is an “angel of visa approval”? In all my years of reading the Bible, I never thought His glory was limited to granting Nigerians exit visas from the hell on earth they created for themselves, despite all the massive churches they’ve built. |

aye88: This has actually been going on for a while now. When I attended my 221g interview earlier this year, I was asked questions from the very first Visa I got. I was even single then. This lady pulled up my transcript.
If you have no business in the US other than to go for vacation, pls kindly look for another country to do the vacation. There are so many beautiful western countries where you can enjoy your vacation. Lets give US a rest toll maybe next year after the elections. And that is if trump doesn't win. If he does, it's going to get tough. I heard one of the reasons they stopped dropbox was because some Nigerians on b category Visa started living in us permanently. When it's time to renew their Visa, they will fill the application online and send their passport down to Nigeria from the US. Get the Visa renewed and DHL the passport back to them without leaving the us This is mostly f-1 students. For bi/b2, I struggle to see how you can do this. You are typically stamped in for a duration that you cannot exceed. |

Katripka: Thanks!
We were divorced after he moved to the US.
So here is a little background story, we were having a lot of marital troubles in the early years of our marriage, we both attended numerous counselling and part of the recommendations of the counsellor, was to travel on a family vacation together, in order to help the union.
We applied for a family visa and we travelled together. It was after we got to the US, that the story changed around staying back on our B1/B2. We got into a heated argument as I was unwilling to overstay, so I came back home and commenced the divorce proceedings which was finalized late last year.
I have the divorce documents but the VO wasn't even willing to listen let alone sight the documents. I tried explaining to her, that the opportunity to stay back presented itself, but because I was unwilling to jeopardize my future, I did not.
This is definitely not a case of wife going to join him but it's hard to believe going by the numerous atrocities committed by Nigerians Call a spade a spade, your chances of getting a visa are slim. The VOs have seen examples like yours time and time again. Even if you present a divorce document (which is hard to see since your ex spouse was not here to sign the document), how do you convince the VO that you’re not likely to get back together and remarry as soon as you get into the US? That’s the bottom line. |

A colleague got denied his B visa because according to them he went on a 1week training on a B visa instead of M visa....this is someone that studied in the US on M visa and has been going to the US for training every 6months since 2014. Your friend should check the requirements for a B visa, I’m sure a training isn’t one of them. Did he specify he was going for a training when he applied for that visa? It doesn’t matter if you’ve been visiting the US for 50 years, all it takes is to abuse it once. |

Date: 14th June 2019 Consulate: Lagos, Nigeria Slot: 7:45AM University: Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, Tennessee Course: Computer Science and Quantitative Methods Concentration in Mathematical Finance Status: Rejected Test not required, I did not take any....
Me: Good Morning Ma'm! VO: Good morning, pass your i20 and passport please. -passed- VO: How did you know about the school Me: I first heard of apsu in one of the scholar’s forum I belong to. However, I did not stop there, I did an extensive online research on institutions that offer mathematical finance and related courses, signaled me to stop VO: when did you graduate and school Me: 2014, University of Lagos Vo: What have you been doing Me: I went for my NYSC, finished 2015 VO: {Cuts in} you have degree 2015 to 2017 Me: Yes ma vo: what degree Me: Masters in Statistics VO: {raise eye}, why going for another Masters Me: Thank you ma, To be a graduate of Mathematical Finance, Mathematical and statistical background is highly fundamental, hence, I took my time to study and have a degree in Mathematics and Statistics. VO: Nods in affirmation, and stopped me from giving other reasons majorly why Mathematical finance VO: Do you apply to any other universities, name them Me: mtu, Unh and wmu. VO: Are you married or Single Me: Single VO: Any child/children Me: None , I am single VO: Who is sponsoring your Education Me: I explained I got a GA which covers my tuition and fees, and also stipends, and my Uncle will help in provision of other funds... Then, she continued to type So, at that time I want to give out my GA letter and bank statement... But, she signaled , I should not worry for documents.... After a while, pink slip {denied} Please, what can be done, as I am preparing to reapply. Two problems: a. Your university of choice. b. You’re going for another masters. If you already have one in Nigeria, why are you wasting money and time to travel to the US to do exactly the same thing? The obvious conclusion is that you’re using it as a route to emigrate, not really to improve from an educational stand point. |

For over 2 weeks now! You guys should help please. There is nothing anyone can do. Peoples will continue misusing that US visa until they finally receive sense with their Visa application policy...
Canada issued visa for the genuine applicant by verifying whatever documents u got with very good account statement. They don't have to receive sense, they can just continue to deny 99% of folks who come to the embassy for a visa. Easy. Why should it be their responsibility to verify that your documents are genuine? they don't have to do that in civilized climes where people won't even contemplate fraud. |

I just arrived Lagos from the North few days ago for a program. That was the main reason for delaying it because there were uncertainties surrounding my situation. Now, this is adding a new situation — going back and forth opposite ends of the country. Pick Abuja quickly... get a date now and worry about everything else later. |

ultimatebas: Under normal circumstances , you would have a good chance. But there is nothing normal under this current US administration. Imagine people trying to get appointment for interview and getting messages like "no appointment dates are available." These are terrible times for America tourists like me. I would advice you guys to go on vacation else where like UK,Netherlands,Australia,Canada etc. for now. When grandma is seventy-five years old(by then Trump would be out)you guys can consider US again. My visa expires December,2019 my brother i have given up trying to renew for now until the dust settles The trump administration is not the problem. They are simply enforcing existing rules more strictly to cope with the increasing influx of immigrants into the US. Unfortunately the unprecedented influx of entitled South Americans from across the Mexican border has made things 10x worse and forcing USCIS to tighten entry requirements. Quite sad. Let’s also be mindful... there are not thousands of US consular officers in Nigeria. There are probably less than 20 who have to deal with thousands of applicants daily... there are only 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. Unfortunately not everyone will get an appointment date ASAP... some who are booking appointments late will have to wait a while longer. |

After paying all the fees etc, now it gets time to make the appointment and they say "There are currently no appointments available". I'm due to resume school by August for my next semester. What do I do? Will appointments open up at some point? Why are there no appointments available? Am I doomed or what? As Nigerians, we find it difficult to plan months ahead. Knowing full well you planned to return to Nigeria in the summer, and that thousands of students are also applying for new f1 visas, trying to renew expired visas, including tourists seeking visit visas... you should have booked an appointment months ago. Your only option is to request an emergency appointment. The problem is that there are probably many in the same situation and only a limited number of consular officers... hopefully you get lucky. |
