Welcome back Bro. you went on ghost mode in a bit. i Want to personally say thank you for your time. I got my visa approved. I made it about myself just like you advised me. Thanks. The changes you are talking about, will it be buhari kind of change or the other kind?
Thanks again.k
CONGRATULATIONS! Excited for you and welcome to the next phase of your life. Use it well! Glad you found the advice useful, don’t forget to pass on the experience to someone else.

Hehe I’ve been sunning myself in good old Arizona the last few days... little time to log on here as much as I used to.

The changes are simply to tighten the existing work visa rules. I think the real issue is to stop the ongoing abuse by large Indian body shops.

please with reference to your comment.do an individual with 3.6\5.0 needs TOEFL and GRE or GRE alone?
TOEFL is simply a test of English proficiency and has nothing to do with gpa. Some schools request it, some don’t. If in doubt, ask your school.

Yes sir, you are definitely right about this. But please give me a sincere advice should I really reapply or wait and do every other thing. I had a 4.01/5.0 from FUTA
Your gpa is high enough to get into a more competitive program in a bigger school. All that would have needed would have been a gre. You have two choices: in the short term, you can try again with what you have. In the long term, you can go back, restrategize, take a gre, ace it, apply to a better program.

Put yourself in the shoes of the VO, they know that not all of you will return, regardless of all you say... who would you let across? The guy going to Stanford for premed or the guy going to point park for an accelerated class?

I wouldn't be surprised if the VO checked went to the university website him/herself and some something contradicting your claim about the school's GRE requirement.
Even I checked. It’s an accelerated 11 month program. Quite different from the traditional 24 month masters program. It’s not clear why he chose this program but not others.

Hello House, please i have an issue that requires your swift advice.

I applied for b1 b2 visa in December 2016, i filled married as my status and entered my then fiance's name as my spouse(he already had his visa then). In Feb 2017, i attended the interview and my visa was issued. A month after, the relationship crashed. I got into another relationship in September with an Nigerian American citizen who came home in August, and immediately we did traditional marriage.

In Oct 2017, i travelled to meet him and we fixed our church wedding for Dec 9. One of our invited guests from Nigeria was delayed at the POE when she told them she was coming for my marriage. She was asked if i was married before and she said no. The US immigration people called my husband asked if i was married before and he said no. After series of scrutiny they allowed my in law entry.

We discussed this with the American pastor in our church and he said the wedding be cancelled that he can't join us together.

Please what do i do at this juncture. My passport and visa carry carry my parent name.
Even your pastor suspects your marriage is a fraud. Yeah nothing to say to you...

Was delayed at the Lagos embassy this morning. And here goes my transcript:
Me:Good morning
VO: Good morning how are you doing today
Me: Fine and you
VO: pass me your passport and I20
VO: why are you going to the US
Me: to obtain a masters degree in environmental studies at point park university (Vo cuts in)
VO: Tell me about this program
Me: environmental studies encompasses not just scientific approach of solving environmental challenges but includes environmental law, environmental communication and most importantly Government policies and environment which is are the major problems that face the Nigeria environment as at now. The ...(VO cuts in)
VO: how many school did you apply to
Me:2 point park university and Marshall university
Vo: why point park over marshall
Me: the program at point park is career oriented which offers opportunity to obtain beyond class experience due to its contribution towards fighting environmental challenge in Pittsburgh, working tirelessly with Allegheny firm to restore and conserve the green land scape which welcomes lots of tourist, also the lectures at point park have both teaching and professional experience and through mentorship would pass this first hand experience to me (Vo cuts in again)
VO: what did you do during your Nysc
Me: worked at the product development department developing green techniques in production aimed at reducing the effect of the industrial process on the environment and... (VP again)
Vo:are you married?
Me:no
Vo:any children
Me:no
Vo: GRE?
Me: wasn't required by the university for my study choice
Started typing like forever
Vo: who is your sponsor
Me: my dad
V(: what does he do
Me: told him
VO started typing for Africa........
Then Ask again did you say point park aren't asking for GRE
Me:was not required for my study program and because I had a GPA above 3.0
This time puts his hand in his mouth and started thinking staring at his system
Vo: what did you say you did after NYSC
Me: was explaining ,in between he asked for salary and I told him I was volunteering. Then he tells me to continue.
Before I could finish the next statement all I heard was I'm sorry this paper explains why I couldn't grant your visa, you're free to reapply. Reaches for the blue paper and gave it to me.

Really I was frustrated though after the interview. I was blank till I got home. I agreed with Twoods on a particular post about the top schools, but still this School has a very good opportunity within and I had scholarship from them too.
But please @Twoods @lagosismyhome and every other person who would constructively criticize me I need your help . I might have said something wrong during my interview please be a light to this path.
Thanks would appreciate your help
I’m not sure what else to tell you other than to try again. I read through your transcript a couple of times, it seems that you answered the questions ok. Again my concern goes back to choice of school. Why point park (which is a liberal arts college) but not univ of Pittsburgh which is bigger and more widely recognized? Going to schools with lax admissions requirements just opens you up to these kind of questions.

Have you ever heard a VO ask a kid admitted to Harvard or Yale how many other schools they applied to?

1. If you say at the interview that you're going to a CC for cost reasons, then the logical conclusion is that you cannot afford to school in the US and you will be denied.

2. CCs do not grant bachelors degrees. You have to transfer to a regular 4-year degree granting university to obtain a bachelors. How do you intend to do that? Can you explain this at your interview?

Guyz, if you are academically sound and you are on a quest to study in the US, I encourage you to put in all it takes to get admitted to an Ivy league or very top US program. Aim to ace the GRE or GMAT, very high GPA, a well crafted personal statement/essays with compelling emotions and an achivement based profile with alot of volunteer experience. These schools look at intellectual vitality, leadership potentials, employability after graduation, class uniqueness and diversity and future supportive alumni network to mention but a few high points. See a transcript at the US embassy for F1 visa.
VO: your passport and i20
Hands over to the CO.
VO: congratulations on your Stanford GSB admission. Pick up your passport at the circled location and keep up the good work.

Another
VO: pass your documents, i20 and passport only.
Hands over.
VO: wow. Wharton Upen? Just once in a while we get to see intakes from Africa. What did you score in the standard test and what was your GPA?
Gmat 760 and GPA 4.89/5.0 scale.
VO: awesome. Thought as much.
Pick up u...blaaa nlaaa.

And guess what? before graduation, alot of fortune 500 companies will awash you with countless offer.

My advice, with God and a very good foundation, life becomes very easy. My 2cent to encourage my every intellectually curious minds.
This was practically mine and my younger brother's experience. If you ace your tests, and you're admitted to top US schools (often with full funding) you virtually get zero questions at the interview. Your path to staying in the US is also smoother.

For those looking for "cheap" schools or looking to scrimp out of taking standardized tests... good luck.

But bros, I for one no know book like you, no matter how I try I may not be as good as you.
Try to be mild and diplomatic. Fingers are not equal you know, not everyone will finish with distinctions. What I would advise if I were you is that each person should be good at something and the world will open its gates to you.
And you sound too righteous, free guys and don't be so judgemental.
I'm just catching my fun with all the arguments. Immigration fraud, no be my thing. I like my freedom. I no get mind for risks.
Fingers don't necessarily have to be equal... however imagine a world where you and i did the right thing at all times, do you think we'd need a visa to go anywhere? The fact that we don't see that what limits us are he consequences of our own actions is why i think we are going no where anytime soon. Those who came here on the backs of fraudulent marriages are here crowing around, forgetting that they are the reason genuine couples now have to jump through hoops to convince a US VO that they have a legit marriage. A german won't have to go through that much.

That someone can feel so brazen to celebrate a clear breach of the law is astounding to me.

People wants Twoods to be like Lagosishome. I believe he (Twoods) may have had an unforgetable experience with a Nigeria (Maybe he got scammed or something else) and perhaps sounds choleric and conservative in nature while Lagosismyhome is a good phlegmatic and open minded. Is an individual differences, you have to accept and appreciate it. Everyone cannot be the way you want them to be, what matters is "what do you have to offer" and I have alot from him irrespective of his manner of communicaton yet I care less. Pick the diamond and throway the mud.
In a sense i don't think that is the full story. I think most people want folks who don't upset the apple cart, people who basically give a nod and a wink to everything they do, people who don't show them up for their inadequacies. Nigeria didn't do much for me, but i recall growing up and wondering why we were so poor in the midst of plenty, so corrupt in the midst of having the largest church density in the world and so insensitive to rules and laws when we definitely abide by them in foreign countries.

Those who can live in Nigeria will surely make it work for them. Kudos to them. They are braver than i could ever be.

I salute Blows_job for creating this thread. It takes courage, not a small one sef.
Haba, but people can be judgmental sha. Stuffs happen to people at different point in time that determine their decisions.

Stop forming abeg, almost everybody wanna relocate to America. Be it Nigerians, Mexicans, Chinese, Ghanaians etc. That people change status especially on B1/B2 visa isn't peculiar to Nigerians alone. In my few years of staying in the US, I have seen enough.

Can I encourage anybody to relocate/change status here,oh yes! My own personal opinion, I prefer to stay in a sane environment pls. Naija too hard and harsh. Naija is like jungle, survival of the fittest grin

My short story of getting here. Few years ago,I came for a family vacation, my husband and my 2 children. Hubby had a good job with take home of like 20k that time. I was also in academics,so my pay too was ok, like 120k. We applied based on that, truthfully oh, and we were granted B1/B2 visa. Hubby just got a mail on our third night in the US,guess what,na sack letter! Gobe leyi ooooo.

We were devastated, didn't know what to do next. We just decided to manage stay for the remaining vacation period and head back home. But I told my mum about my husband sack letter. She come remember that one of her long lost family friends(Mr A) dey Yankee. We got the man contact and link up with him. We explained our situation to him and the man said our best bet is to stay put for Yankee oh. Naija hard na, hubby will come back home come to join the endless ocean of job seekers.

But Mr A over try for us no be small. He engaged ones of his friends wey be immigration lawyer to put us thru. Mr A offered to do marriage with me and he arranged one white lady to marry my husband, all at no cost. I won't go too deep into it more than this so it won't look as if I dey encourage bad bad thing oh lipsrsealed

We don get our Pali now, doing well in the US. We don't do crime or move with bad gang. And we be employer of labor.

My advice to anybody coming, be focus. It will be tough,no matter the means you come in with,it going to be tough. Naija work etiquette is quite different from Yankee own oh.

Now I'm waiting for supreme court judges to come judge this my matter now.....mchewwww.
Blows_jobs,I'm sorry for my long epistle on your thread.
You committed a deportable offense that is not covered by your blue passport... but somehow you haven’t committed a crime? Amazing! How do you go to church on Sunday and keep a straight face?

good evening house i am back with another question.I am currently checking up on schools that I would likely apply to.Please what should be my guiding point in avoiding choosing a school that is graded low by the embassy? oga twood n co pls ur opinion is highly needed
You’re going about this all wrong. The aim shouldn’t be selecting a school favorable to the VOs but one that helps you achieve your goal - which is to advance your career. In that case, these are things I would think about if I were you:

1. What is my major of choice?
2. Which are the top schools for that major?
3. Depending on cost and admissions requirements, can I narrow my list from 2) above to 3-4 schools?

Chances are, all schools selected in 3) above will be acceptable to the VOs and you are better placed to answer the question “why did you select this school” without needing a mock or cramming someone else’s answers.

I’m not an atheist by any stretch. You and i fundamentally have a different idea about the Christian faith. You think it’s a religion, I think it’s a relationship whose fruits ought to be borne by how you live your life, the decisions you take and the compromises you are willing to make. Nigerians are Christians only by virtue of the fact that they spend their entire week running from one church program to the other. Their lives show zero fruit of this vaunted faith of theirs.

And you guys think it is that easy?. A lot of people that finally completed their PhD in the US moved to Canada to become a permanent resident (Canada will give you straight PR comparing to America). When y'all come here, you will realize that becoming PR isn't as easy as A,B,C regardless of class of visa or type of occupation. It takes years and years of waiting.

A lot of folks discourage others from coming to America and when you check their background, you will realized that they also went through something like that in the past (probably had to marry an ugly old white lady to get their PR eventually when they get tired of the mountains of re-application for work authorization). Now that they are citizen and been living here for years, they start acting like they were there when the US constitution got written. They act more American than even the naturally born Citizens.

All we are saying on this forum is advise people about their situation, let then know the repercussions of the decisions they are about to make, give them other options they can explore and wish them all the best. That's all.
The ease depends on your perceived value to the society. If someone thinks you’re worth the effort, they will move heaven and earth for you. Many Nigerians get through the process in 2-5 years flat. I went through the process without paying a dime and I had paid lawyers do everything for me. I’ve got friends who went through the process even faster - usually highly qualified doctors/surgeons. Not everyone went through the backdoor or married to stay. This is why I encourage folks to aim high... you don’t have to be a genius neither do you have to sneak in, the door is wide open. The problem is our mentality is so often warped that we think the only way is the fraudulent way.

To your second point, the jibe about folks acting more American than the native born is a well worn insult, way past it’s sell by date. It’s the same stuff you hear in the African American community where you are accepted if you’re a high school dropout, or run off the mill baby mama, drug kingpin, layabout etc. Those who step out of that stereotype to go to college, get corporate jobs, move out to the surburbs etc. are often derided and accused of “acting white”. It says a lot that we think so low of ourselves that we think being above board is something reserved for whites, not lowly “hustlers” like us.

When you talk of folks who finished with phds having to move to Canada, I’d ask you: phds in what and from what schools/programs? A PhD in African studies from Lincoln university is quite useless to be honest.
