Options

Even after the surgery, Nkechi’s desire to have a child became stronger than ever, but it was obvious she required assistance to achieve that.
One of her close friends referred them to a fertility clinic in Lagos Island.
At the clinic, the couple was presented with alternative options to natural conception.
One of these options was In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) surrogacy – when another woman carries and gives birth to a baby for a couple that cannot have a child on their own because there is an issue with the woman.
The specialists at the clinic carefully explained the details including the pros and cons of surrogacy. After thorough explanation, Nkechi and Emeka settled for this “wonderful sounding surrogacy”. They liked the idea that money would not exchange hands apart from money needed to take care of the woman while carrying the baby. They were also satisfied thatthe intending surrogate had to be a married woman of their own choice that must have delivered a child herself.

‘Rent’ a womb

They were particularly encouraged because Nkechi had an aunt who fitted the role perfectly. Excitedly, they invited the aunt over and Nkechi burst into tears of joy when she agreed to ‘rent’ out her womb to the desperate couple. They wereoverjoyed to have someone willing to do it for them.
All the necessary tests were conducted even to ensure that the ‘rented’ womb and Nkechi’s cycle were compatible. After several tests, Nkechi’s eggs were collected and her husband’s sperms also collected and both fertilised through the IVF process.
After a few days, healthy embryos developed and two were implanted into her aunt’s womb. About three weeks later, a pregnancy test was done and it was positive. Nkechi’s aunt had a very stable pregnancy and, nine months later, a healthy baby girl was born. Nkechi was a mother!

Disorders

Janet Audu had a more complicated situation. The 25- year- old school teacher had lost her uterus from recommended hysterectomy due to obstetric disorders during her previous pregnancy. Her only option then to save her life was to remove the uterus. In the process of weighing options presented to her, it was discovered that she had ovarian cancer. Her world came crashing with this latest development.
However, her husband had healthy sperms and doctors explained there is viable solution only that they must have an open mind about the whole process.
Desperate to have their own child, they agreed to abide by the doctor’s advice. Surrogacy was recommended and they heartily embraced it after the doctor’s explanation.
Janet was now faced with providing an egg donor, and another person to provide the womb. Ethically it is not right for a donor to provide both eggs and womb. Luckily for Janet, her 46-year-old mother was still quite healthy.

Her mother was willing to serve as a surrogate uterus while her friend volunteered to donate her eggs. The mothers’menstrual cycles were synchronized with birth control pills so that day one of the mother occurred simultaneously with day one of her friend’s cycles.

Then the friend’s eggs along with her husband’s sperm were used to create two embryos in a culture dish. Both embryos were then placed in the uterus of the mother-to-be who became pregnant with her daughter’s child. Nine months later, she gave birth to her healthy grandchild whom she then immediately handed over to her daughter and son-in-law. So Janet’s mother gave birth to her own grandchild.
Nkechi and Janet have become mothers courtesy of IVF and egg donation.
Available information show that the first gestational surrogacy was in 1985 with a successful case of a woman with no uterusthatwas able to have her own genetic child.

Today, even without uterus, women looking for children can now have their own biological children, thanks to these landmarks.
According to experts, some of the medical conditions that might make surrogacy necessary for a woman include absence or malformation of the womb, recurrent pregnancy loss and repeated IVF implantation failures.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is not left out of this medical revolution. According to the Medical Director/CEO, Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos, Abuja and Asaba, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, whose centre carries out surrogacy, the procedure (surrogacy) is an arrangement whereby a woman agrees to carry a pregnancy for a couple. Ajayi explained that there are two types of surrogacy— natural (traditional surrogates) or IVF surrogate mother (gestational surrogate).
“Surrogacy is a situation in which a third party (woman) agrees to carry a pregnancy to term on behalf of an infertile couple. While a natural surrogate mother is genetically related to the child, apart from carrying the child, she has also gone through the procedure of insemination, with the use of her own eggs. On the other hand, an IVF surrogate is not genetically related to the child.
She carries a pregnancy created by the egg and sperm of the commissioning couple. Ideally, the surrogate should be under the age of 38 years, married or in a stable relationship. She should also preferably at least have previous live birth without complications.

The Medical Director stated that a prospective surrogate is thoroughly screened and counselled and such a person should not have medical disorders, such as diabetes or blood group incompatibilities and shouldn’t smoke, drink or abuse drugs.
He explained that the couples requiring IVF surrogacy is usually those in which the woman’s ovaries are producing good quality eggs, but her womb has been damaged or surgically removed. This can occur in stances whereby a woman had uterine cancer, severe haemorrhage for some reasons, or a ruptured womb from previous pregnancy.

Sometimes women who suffer medical problems such as severe diabetes, heart and kidney diseases put themselves at risk if they were to carry a pregnancy to term. But for others, surrogacy may be indicated because there is history of repeated miscarriage, due to some immunological incompatibilities i.e. Rhesus blood group incompatibility between mother and foetus. He said the success rates for traditional surrogacy are approximately 10-20 per cent per cycle if intrauterine insemination is done but with IVF, the chances depend on the age of the surrogate.

The fertility expert noted that due to some complications and the fact that the baby will have DNA of the surrogate when the surrogate’s eggs are used added that people now prefer IVF surrogacy.
“Surrogacy can be recommended to a woman who does not have a uterus or lost it from child birth. Also surrogacy can be an option for women that had badly performed fibroid removal, repeated abortions, including medical conditions such as severe hypertension and heart disease”.

On whether the baby could get attached to the surrogate, Ajayi said: “If the arrangement is well done it is not likely to happen and when it happens the court may be the last option because there must be a surrogacy contract before the process. She cannot return to say she wants to have the baby back. We just had one delivered recently.

“For IVF surrogacy, live birth rates are in the range of 35-40 per cent per cycle. “Surrogacy is a treatment of last resort in most places all over the world this is much more so in our environment. Proper legal and medical precautions should be taken at every step of the process.”

Who needs it?

Surrogacy may be appropriate if you have a medical condition that makes it impossible or dangerous to get pregnant and to give birth.

Success rates

It is quite difficult to determine a success rates for surrogacy, as many factors are relevant, including the surrogate’s ability to get pregnant, the age of the egg donor (if involved), the success of procedures such as IUI and IVF, the quality of gamete provided by the commissioning couple.
The age of the woman who provides the egg is the most important factor that affects chances of pregnancy.

Risks

The risks associated with surrogacy depend on the type of surrogacy undertaken. Generally, the risks associated with full surrogacy are similar to those for IVF.
There is also a risk of transferring HIV and hepatitis, and so screening of everyone involved in surrogacy involving IUI is recommended, and required in surrogacy arrangements involving IVF.
If a registered donor at a licensed clinic is used, the donor will automatically be screened.

Legal issues

Surrogacy involves complicated legal issues and it is recommended that couples seek their own legal advice before making any decisions. It is important to know that surrogacy arrangements are unenforceable.
It is also advisable to receive counselling before starting the surrogacy process, to help think about all the questions involved.

‘RENT A WOMB’: Women who make babies without uterus

Time was when women without wombs died childless. Today, the story is different, thanks to advancements in medicine. There are many mothers having biological children without wombs. This is made possible courtesy of Assisted Reproductive Technology, ART.

Twenty –eight year-old Nkechi Obi is intelligent, beautiful and hardworking. She studied economics and graduated with first class honours. As a young and attractive lady, she was the dream of every man but settled for Emeka Nmeso, an engineer.
Nkechi has a younger sister, Nkiru, while Emeka is an only child. The couple are from well-to-do families. They are comfortable and live in a mansion, and are in love. They have the world at their feet and are the pride of their families.
Nkechi and Emeka were engaged few months after they met at a wedding. They soon tied the nuptial knot. Their wedding was the town for weeks. Both had agreed they were going to have many children to make up for the few their parents had.
Emeka used to joke that he would not let Nkechi rest until she bore him six children. Three by three (three boys and three girls), he used to say. Nkechi was even more adventurous. She had her mind set on eight children – five boys and three girls. She actually prayed to have a set of twins first. So they moved in as husband and wife and enthusiastically settled down to build their expected large family.
The first few months of marriage were the most enchanting of Nkechi’s life. Emeka was the perfect husband. He was romantic, caring and loving to a fault. He spoiled Nkechi with gifts and attention. He told her she was his queen and treated her like one.
After six months of conjugal bliss, Nkechi took in, but, after a few weeks, began to bleed. She was admitted into hospital and placed on permanent bed rest, but the bleeding worsened and, despite all efforts, she lost the pregnancy. She and Emeka were devasted, but that was not the end of trouble for the couple.
For no reason that she could understand, Nkechi discovered she was still bleeding after the pregnancy loss. There were times the bleeding got so bad, she felt very weak and could not leave home. She stopped going to work and was forced to stay in bed permanently, only making frequent trips to the lavatory. She returned to hospital and had to undergo surgery after being transfused a couple of times without success.
When the doctor announced the final diagnosis after series of tests and examinations, it was a bombshell. Nkechi really did not understand what the problem was, but all she could make out of the diagnosis was that her uterus had been damaged during the failed pregnancy and the only way to stop the continuous bleeding was to remove the uterus.
She consulted other specialists and went through all kinds of tests, but the same recommendation came up. Her uterus was damaged beyond repair and needed to be removed(hysterectomy).
Nkechi found it very difficult to accept that her uterus was damaged. She had been hoping so much to have children, and hadn’t done anything bad to her uterus, so how come it was so damaged? What happened, she asked continuously?
She cried and screamed and rejectedthe verdict, but her husband persuaded her after they were made to understand she could still have babies even without a womb.
After some time, she finally agreed to have the surgery done. It was successful. She became a woman without a womb.

PoliticsSecond-term Denial: Ambode To Miss Out On Abuja Mansion Gift- LAGOS LAW by TyroneP(op): 5:02am On Dec 23, 2018
Second-term denial: Ambode to miss out on Abuja mansion.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State will be the first governor in Lagos State since 2007 to miss out on a mansion in Abuja after leaving office , SUNDAY PUNCH ’s investigation has revealed .
The Public Office Holder ( Payment of Pension) Law No 11 official Gazette of Lagos State , 2007 states that former governors of Lagos State are entitled to a house in Lagos and Abuja in any location of their choice .
However , the law adds that any governor who does not serve for two consecutive terms , will only be entitled to a house in Abuja .
Section 2 states , “One residential house each for the governor and the deputy governor at any location of their choice in Lagos State and one residential house in the Federal Capital Territory for the governor on two consecutive terms .”
Following his loss to Babajide Sanwo -Olu at the All Progressives Congress governorship primary in October, Ambode will not be returning to the Alausa Governor ’s Office on May 29 , 2019 .
The state government has built houses for former governors of the state in Lagos and Abuja in line with the law .
A house was bought for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Ikoyi and the Asokoro area of Abuja next to the Lagos State Governor ’s Lodge.
Although no actual figure was placed on how much the houses procured would cost , our correspondent learnt that to build or buy houses for former governors of Lagos would cost between N 500 m and N 1bn .
For instance , the construction of a “section ” of the house of the immediate past Deputy Governor , Adejoke Orelope - Adefulire , on 15 Cameron Drive , Ikoyi , costs the state N 329 ,929 ,551 , according to the Lagos State budget of 2014, which was obtained by SUNDAY PUNCH .
However , Ambode will be entitled to other fringe benefits which comprise a house in any location in Lagos State , six brand new cars every three years , 100 per cent of the basic salary of the serving governor , ( N 7 .7 m per annum) free health care for himself and members of his family .

The law also says a former governor will be entitled to furniture allowance , which is 300 per cent of their annual basic salary ( N 23 .3 m ); house maintenance allowance , which is 10 per cent of basic salary ( N778 , 296 ); utility allowance , which is 20 per cent of the salary ( N1 .5 m ) and car maintenance allowance , which is 30 per cent of the annual basic salary ( N2 .3 m ) .
Other benefits include entertainment allowance , which is 10 per cent of the basic salary ( N778 , 296 ) and a personal assistant , who will earn 25 per cent of the governor ’s annual basic salary ( N1 .9 m ) .
The law adds that a former governor is entitled to domestic workers comprising a cook , a steward , a gardener and others whose appointments are pensionable .
A former governor will be entitled to eight policemen and two officials of the Department of State Services for life , according to the Lagos law .
However , any governor of the state will miss out on all the goodies if he is removed from office by the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Ambode , on Monday , formally endorsed Sanwo -Olu and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, as the Lagos State ’s APC standard bearers for the 2019 governorship election .
He urged those still aggrieved with the fallout of the primaries of the party to follow his example , and accept the party ’s supremacy.
Speaking with our correspondent on the telephone , the Executive Director , Socio - Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Adetokunbo Mumuni , said it was immoral for former governors to be given life pensions .
He noted that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission had approved payment of 300 per cent of basic salary as severance allowances ( N6 .6 m ) for political office holders on leaving office .
He said , “ The fact that you become a governor of a state should not make you entitled to all those mind -boggling emoluments . ”
Mumuni said some former governors , who ended up becoming ministers or senators , were collecting pensions and allowances that accrued to their new office , an action he described as immoral .

HealthPromiscuous Male Partner: Use Female Condom by TyroneP(op): 5:33pm On Dec 02, 2018
A female condom (commonly referred to as an internal condom) is a method of contraception that's inserted inside of the user’s vagina before sex. Made of soft nitrile (a synthetic rubber), it's shaped like a long tube or sheath — with one closed end and one open end — creating a barrier between the penis and the vaginal canal. Similar to the male condom (commonly referred to as an external condom), the internal condom can help prevent pregnancy and reduce the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infection (STI) transmission when used consistently and correctly. And it’s great that you’ve asked the question, because knowing what it is, how to use it, and the pros and cons associated with it can help with making decisions about how to protect yourself and your partner(s) during sex.

The internal condom can be a bit intimidating to someone who has never seen or used one before. It can be easy to use though, once familiar with it. When looking at the internal condom, you'll notice that they’re well lubricated (for ease of insertion) and at each end, there's a flexible ring. These rings help to keep the condom in place once it's inserted. The fixed outer ring secures the opening. The moveable inner ring sits at the bottom of the condom to secure the tube in place. The end of the sheath is closed off so that it can collect ejaculated sperm.

To use the internal condom:

Hold the sheath at the closed end and pinch the inner ring so that it becomes long and narrow.

Gently insert the inner ring end as far into the vagina as possible, using an index finger to push up the inner ring until the finger reaches the cervix (similar to how a diaphragm would be inserted). Not to worry, it won't go in too deep or get lost inside the vagina. When in place, it'll cover the opening of the cervix and line the vaginal walls. A general indicator of proper placement is that the ring isn’t noticeable anymore to the user. The outer ring must always remain outside the vaginal opening.

Before sex, be sure that it hangs straight and isn't twisted. Then, add water-based lube on the penis or to the inside of the condom to increase comfort.

During sex, be sure to hold the external ring in place while the penis is guided into the vagina to make sure it stays in place.

After sex, twist the outer ring, gently remove the condom, and discard (don't flush it down the toilet).

If you choose this method of contraception, carefully read the instructions enclosed in the box before use.

Some folks like to practice inserting the internal condom a few times before having sex so they can become comfortable using it. Keep in mind that each internal condom can only be used once; a new one needs to be inserted for those feeling randy for round two (or three, or four…). Also, never use the internal condom together with an external condom. Rather than providing double the protection, using the two together can create more friction and make one or both of the condoms more likely to break during sex.

Before using this method of contraception, it's also wise to consider the pros and cons:

Pros:

If used correctly and consistently every time, it can be 95 percent effective at preventing pregnancy (when accounting for potential user error, it tends to be around 75 to 82 percent effective).

Allows those with a vagina to take the initiative with a barrier method of birth control.

It helps to reduce the risk of HIV and STI transmission — and its use for this purpose is compatible with hormonal methods of birth control such as the pill, patch, ring, implant, shot, and intrauterine device (IUD).

It can be inserted up to eight hours before sex.

A full erection (for those who have a penis) isn’t necessary when a partner is using an internal condom.

It’s an option for those who have an allergy or sensitivity to latex or polyurethane.

No prescription needed! It can be purchased over-the-counter (and may be free in some locations).

There are no hormones associated with this method, which may be an option for those who are sensitive to hormonal birth control.

Cons:

Internal condoms can be more expensive than external condoms.

Some may find using them a bit awkward because the outer ring must stay outside of the vagina during sex.

Since the internal condom is inserted into the vagina, it's necessary to be comfortable touching the genital area.

It may cause irritation.

It's been noted that without enough lube, it may make some sounds (though with the newer nitrile material, this is less likely).

The internal condom is sold under the brand name FC2®, and is available over-the-counter at pharmacies, grocery stores, and online — usually wherever external condoms are sold. For answers to common questions and other information about this condom, check out the FC2® website(link is external) and Planned Parenthood(link is external).
HealthMajor Causes Of Menstrual Cramps by TyroneP(op): 5:24pm On Dec 02, 2018
What causes menstrual cramps?

Menstruation (often referred to as a period) is a part of the ovulatory cycle and involves monthly shedding of the uterine lining that is accompanied by menstrual blood. While the bleeding itself generally isn’t painful, many people find that they experience pain in their lower abdomen before and during their period. This pain may come in the form of cramping or throbbing, and is referred to as dysmenorrhea. Additionally, certain conditions may contribute to the pains. While some may find it just a bit annoying, for others these pains can be debilitating and interfere with their usual activities. There are a number of ways to alleviate the pain associated with menstrual cramps, and they're often determined based on the cause of the menstrual cramps. Want to know more about these pesky pains? Keep on reading!

There are two kinds of dysmenorrhea: primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs due to the process of menstruation in the body. During a period, the uterus is contracting in order to shed its lining. The chemical that causes this is called prostaglandin, which causes the contractions to occur. It's these muscle twistings that can, when severe and prolonged, contribute to menstrual discomfort by temporarily cutting off the blood supply to the uterus, depriving the muscle of oxygen and causing pain. Some other common symptoms of dysmenorrhea include vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. These types of cramps may lessen as a person ages. Pain from primary dysmenorrhea usually begins a day or two before or the day a person's period begins and can last from 12 to 72 hours. On the other hand, secondary dysmenorrhea occurs when menstrual cramps are due to a condition related to the reproductive organs. For example, conditions such as endometriosis(link is external), adenomyosis(link is external), pelvic inflammatory disease(link is external), cervical stenosis(link is external), and uterine fibroids(link is external) may all lead to pain during menstruation. Pain from these conditions may last longer and begin earlier in the menstrual cycle.

There are a number of ways to relieve mild menstrual cramps at home. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be helpful for some, especially when taken as soon as pain is felt. Additionally, placing a heating pad on or massaging the lower back and abdomen may provide relief. Some may find being physically active improve their cramps, while others find it beneficial to rest during their period. For those that find that their menstrual cramps aren’t relieved by methods they can do at home and seek the assistance of a health care provider. Depending on the situation, prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) may be prescribed. Hormonal birth control may also be an option for reducing cramps. Additionally, for those whose cramps are caused by a health condition, treatments for that condition may help alleviate the cramps. This may include different medications as well as surgery to remedy what may be causing the pain.

The jihadists have in recent months intensified their attacks on military bases in the northeast , with the most audacious taking place on November 18 , when military sources said at least 43 soldiers were killed at a base in Metele near the border with Niger.
Troops who survived said over 100 of their colleagues were killed , but after a long period of silence , the military on Wednesday gave an official figure of 23 deaths .
The latest attack came a day after President Muhammadu Buhari went to N’Djamena to meet top leaders from Chad , Niger and Cameroon to discuss how to deal with the surge in violence.
Buhari is under pressure to show his administration is winning the fight against Boko Haram ahead of a presidential election in February at which he will seek a second term in office .
“The heads of state and government expressed their deep concern with regards to the upsurge of attacks and expressed the crucial need to change their modus operandi in the fight against Boko Haram ,” a joint statement said after the talks .
The nine -year conflict has killed about 27 ,000 people and displaced 1. 8 million from their homes in Nigeria .
Meanwhile , the European Union and the Economic Community of West African States have expressed concerns over the increase in attacks by terrorist groups in Nigeria .
They said the spate of attacks posed a great challenge to the forthcoming 2019 general elections .
The two organisations made the observation in a communiqué issued at the end of 22 nd ECOWAS- EU political meeting in Abuja on Friday .
The meeting was at the ministerial level of the EU and ECOWAS.
It was co - chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , Amb . Mustapha Suleiman , and Secretary of State of Finance Republic of Austria , Hebert Fuchs , who is the chair of the Council of the EU .
Sulaiman represented the chair of ECOWAS Council of Ministers while Fuchs spoke on behalf of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy .
The communiqué read in part, “The participants exchanged views on the security and humanitarian situation in the north -east Nigeria .
“Both sides commended the progress made in the fight against Boko Haram but noted with concern the recent increase in attacks by terrorist groups .”
“Referring to its support provided to the Multinational Joint Task Force , the EU expressed its commitment to support the countries of the Lake Chad Basin in addressing the multiple remaining challenges in this region through a comprehensive approach ,” it stated .
The participants noted the challenging general security environment ahead of the February 2019 elections in Nigeria .

Armed group emerges in Sokoto, takes over LGA, arrests herdsmen, taxes households

A suspected terrorist group carrying sophisticated weapons is currently in control of Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, applying ‘strange laws’ and punishing defaulters.

An online platform, Premium Times reported that members of the group, believed to be from Niger Republic, are in possession of assorted weapons, preaching Islamic teachings, forcefully collecting alms (zakat) and flogging defaulters.
He stated that though members of the terror group are yet to be identified by name, and have been in the area for than two months, they are allegedly recruiting youth in a nearby bush. After ‘training’ them, they give them a motorcycle, he said.
The witness, who pleaded anonymity, said members of the group were more than 200.
He said they looked strange, spoke Arabic and wore turbans over their heads.
“They imposed compulsory levies on each household with cows and rams. Those with cows were paying N500 and those with ram paid N200,” he said.
“They are arresting and fining herdsmen who encroach on farmlands and are keeping the money.
“They are operating freely, scaring residents, without being challenged. They are going from one community to another,” the witness said. Tangaza Local Government in Sokoto State borders Niger Republic.
The border communities of the two countries inter-marry and are identical and speak the same dialect.Sokoto State Police Commissioner, Murtala Mani, told the paper yesterday that he was on his way to the area and would call back later in the day.
Also Sokoto police spokesperson, Cordelia Nwawe, said the police would address journalists as soon as her boss returned from the affected area. The spokesperson for the state government, Abubakar Shekara, confirmed the report but said he could not provide further comments.

Boko Haram insurgents have threatened another attack on the military base at Jiddari-Polo, Maiduguri.

The terrorists on Monday attacked farmers in the area, hacking four to death while one was left with severe injuries.

One of the survivors of the Monday attack, Mala Umara, told AFP that the terrorists came in large numbers

“They came in large numbers and killed four and left the other man seriously injured,” the 75-year-old farmer said.

The insurgents were believed to belong to the Abubakar Shekau group.

Umara, added that while sparing him, the insurgents instructed him to tell the Nigerian Army to prepare for another attack.

“They asked me to deliver a message to the soldiers that they should be prepared for an attack soon,” the septuagenarian told AFP.

Another survivor, Abba Muhammad, said, “Five of them encircled me, but I instinctively bolted.”

The attack was also confirmed by a local militia leader, Babakura Kolo.

HealthScientist Has Created World’s First Genetically-edited Babies;HIV PROOF(PHOTO) by TyroneP(op): 6:08pm On Nov 27, 2018
Chinese scientist he has created world’s first genetically-edited babies

November 27, 2018

A Chinese researcher claims he has, for the first time in history, edited the genes of two babies in a case with profound medical and ethical implications.

According to a YouTube video posted on Sunday, researcher He Jiankui from the south-eastern city of Shenzhen

says the genes of two Chinese girls had been modified so they cannot be infected with HIV NAN reported.

He said, “the girls, named Lulu and Nana, came crying into the world as healthy as any other babies a few weeks ago.”

He claimed that he performed gene surgery on fertilized eggs using the CRISPR/Cas9 protein with instructions to prevent future HIV infection.

He has yet to publish a paper about the highly controversial procedure.

The Southern University of Science and Technology researcher said that the gene surgery was successful “and no gene was changed except for the one to prevent HIV infection.’’

However, he could not be reached for further comment, while the parents’ and the babies’ identities were kept secret.

He claimed that the father of the babies is HIV positive and wanted to prevent his children from suffering from discrimination.

The announcement, as expected, received a lot of backlash.

Peter Dabrock, Chairman of the German Ethics Council, said “the research represents irresponsible experiments on humans.

“Whether what Chinese researcher, He, claims is true, at present, such attempt and its announcement are to be criticised in the strongest terms.”

Dabrock added that “the secondary and late effects of gene editing are difficult to predict and control.”

TravelVisa-seeking Nigerian Students Lament Sad Experiences At US Embassy by TyroneP(op): 5:25am On Nov 26, 2018
Twenty-six-year-old Benjamin had prepared himself and spent five days fasting and praying to secure a student visa at the United States’ embassy.

His widowed mother had spent her savings to pay all the fees leading to the stage and her hopes were hinged on Benjamin scaling through the crucial interview.

Like other students seeking admission to schools in the US, Benjamin’s mother had, according to him, paid about $100 (N36,000) for application fee to the foreign school, $300 (N108,000) for evaluation fee, and $91 (N32,000) for the courier service to bring the admission documents to Nigeria. The United States had also been paid $200 with an additional $20 service charge (N80,300).

the documents arrived and Benjamin’s mother paid N57,600 for the visa application to the embassy. In all, about N350,000 had been expended, including other miscellaneous fees.

Benjamin went for the interview and after some minutes, he was handed a blue paper.

“Dear applicant, thank you for your interest in travelling to the United States. This is to inform you that you have been found ineligible for a non-immigrant visa under Section 214 (b) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act. A denial under Section 214 (b) means that you were not able to demonstrate that your intended activities in the United States would be consistent with the classification of the non-immigrant visa for which you applied.

“Today’s decision cannot be appealed. However, you may reapply at any time. If you decide to reapply, you must submit a new application form and photo, pay the visa application fee again and make a new appointment to be interviewed by a consular officer….,” the letter read in part.

The Ondo State indigene, who wondered what he did wrong, lamented that the rejection was a big blow to his family.

“The consular officer had no reason not to give me the visa. He asked different questions, which I answered sincerely. He just gave me back my passport and said I should try again later. I am supposed to resume school on January 7, 2019. My widowed mother paid the fees for my six-month flight course. We spent about N350,000,” he said.

But Benjamin’s case is not peculiar.

Twenty-eight-year-old Bimpe from Ogun State said she was certain she passed the visa interview after answering four questions.

“I was asked what I was going to do in the US and I said I was going for pilot training. The officer asked if I worked in Nigeria and I said no. He asked who my sponsor was and I said my father.

“He asked me if I could fly and I told him that at the end of the training, I would know how to fly. He asked for my father’ statement of account and after going through it for a few minutes, he returned it and said I should try again later,” Bimpe said.

Another student, Sasha, who claimed to have got admission to St. Joseph University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, said she had been denied a visa twice.

The 26-year-old claimed that the denial had affected her resumption in the school where she had already paid some money.

She said, “The first time I went to the embassy in Lagos was in July. The interviewer asked me a series of questions, including the name of my school and the course I was going to study. While explaining, he suddenly cut me short and said, ‘Sorry, you are not qualified for the visa.’ That was all; no specific reason was given. When I asked for the reason for the denial, he just said, ‘Sorry, I am not allowed to tell you; but you can try next time.’ Most of us who applied for visas that day were not given.

“The second time, I went to Abuja. That was on August 27. When I got there, I was asked when my school would resume and I told them August 27 and that I should have come earlier if the embassy was not shut for two weeks. Immediately I said that, the interviewer said, ‘Sorry, you are not qualified for visa again.’ The fault was not mine.”

Another prospective aviation student of Epic Flight Academy, Florida, Charles, alleged that the consular officer had problems with his mother being the sponsor of his education.

Charles said that was the only point of disagreement which marred his chances when he went for the first interview on September 21.

“I applied again and got a date for Monday, October 22. I was asked questions such as the name of my school and why I was going there to study. I was asked what kind of airplane I would like to fly and I told the interviewer and he smiled. I thought that was a positive reaction and I was hopeful. He asked for proof of the payment of my service fee, which I gave him. Then he said, ‘Sorry, I can’t give you a visa.’

“We paid N350,000 as visa fee, service fee, application fee, evaluation fee, among others, and you are not giving us a visa after going through a lot of stress? I have paid my registration fee. I was supposed to resume on November 5,” he added.

A parent, who identified himself only as Adewunmi, alleged that his 18-year-old daughter, who got admission to study nursing at Grand Valley State University, Michigan, was disqualified because she was not married.

Adewunmi said the N345,000 he spent on the process was wasted.

“She told me that when she said she was not married, the interviewer said she was not qualified to have the visa. I don’t know what is wrong with the embassy and if they don’t want us to apply to schools in the US, they should tell us instead of exploiting us.

“It appears like they are just taking our money. How many people are they giving visas? And how many are they collecting visa fees from in a day? It is like fraud. If they don’t want us to send our children to their schools, they should tell us,” the contractor said.

Another parent, Wole Ogunba, said he believed there was a plot to stop Nigerian students from travelling to the US.

Ogunba, who claimed to have lived in the US from 1996 to 2013 before returning to Nigeria, said his daughter was denied a visa because she asked the interviewer to speak up.

He said, “My daughter went to the embassy for an interview and she was the first person on the line. All she had the opportunity to say was, ‘Sorry, I can’t hear you.’ She said it twice and that was the end of the interview. And it’s not the first time that I will hear that people said, ‘Pardon’ or ‘I can’t hear you,’ and they are denied visas.

“My daughter is not an illiterate. She speaks and understands English. And you cannot tell me that the reason you did not go further with the interview was because you thought she would not be able to understand what she would be taught in class. She gained admission to study nursing and we paid some of the money and still, she did not get an opportunity to go there.

“If this kind of thing happens in America, you get a refund. So, I don’t know why it is in Nigeria that things do not work. People pay service fee; visa fee; transport fare; hotel fees, if you don’t live in Lagos or Abuja; flight ticket to travel; and the DHL to mail in this and that. And within a few minutes, their hopes are dashed.

“But I guess it is because this is Nigeria and nobody is ready to stand up to them. We want answers; if they don’t want anybody to go there to study anymore, they should tell us. And what makes it worse is that they don’t tell you the reason for the denial. They have a small piece of paper that they give you and what they print there is very vague.”

Visit to US embassy

During a three-day visit to the US embassy on Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos, our correspondent observed that the area was a beehive of business activities.

Although our correspondent got to the embassy around 8am, it was learnt most of the visa applicants got to the embassy as early as 4am.

The PUNCH learnt that many of the interviewees, some of whom came from outside Lagos, lodged in hotels to avoid being late.

From 8am till 11am when our correspondent left, less than five of those who went in for interviews came out with smiles on their faces.

The fate of every applicant could be predicted from the colour of the crisp A4 printout they collected from the embassy: blue for rejection, white for acceptance.

“The woman asked me what course I was going to study and I said it. She asked who my sponsor was. Then she said I photocopied my F1 document, but I did not. It was what was sent to me through DHL. She, however, insisted that I photocopied it,” a student who was rejected said.

A man, who wanted to study Computer Science in Virginia International School, Virginia, said it was a bad day for most applicants at the embassy.

He said, “About 100 people had gone before me and they did not give anyone, except a woman who was in her 80s.”

A man, who accompanied a family for the interview, told our correspondent that the embassy sometimes did not ask questions from the applicants.

“If you get here by 4am, you will see a lot of parked cars. People who have appointment by 6am come early. The embassy has more than 10 sessions in a day and they make billions of naira. If 100 people go in, less than 10 persons will be given visas. They are just using us to make money,” he said.

Predictably, the family he accompanied to the embassy came out, looking dejected.

“They did not give us,” both husband and wife chorused.

While our correspondent waited at the gate, a man boasted that he was sure his father would get a visa.

He said, “The US is not giving Nigerians visas. Do you know how many of my friends that have been rejected? But my father is 77 years old and I am sure they will give him. If you are less than 18, they may consider you. But at age 20, 26, 30, 32, you are just wasting your time.”

Some minutes later, his father came out.

He checked the file of the old man and smiled at the white paper.

“I told you they would give him. If you are a young man and you have a virgin passport, you are just joking. They will not grant you a visa,” he told me.

The Chief Executive Officer, Supertech Educonsult, Mr Oluyemi Ayeni, who said his registered company trained those writing foreign English tests, said he had told the US embassy at several forums to declare if they were no longer interested in allowing students to study in the country.

He lamented that many of the students he tried to assist got dejected when they were denied visas after spending a lot on processing fees.

Ayeni said, “There are a lot of universities in the US today; if you speak English, you don’t need to write any English test. Still, the embassy will force you to sit for English tests which are not required by the university; each of them costs about N80,000.

“An average student spends up to N350,000 to the interview stage and the money is not refundable. In the past, if you don’t get a visa, you will not pay the service fee of $220. The American embassy changed the policy about two years ago, saying you must pay for the service fee before you come for interview and the money is not refundable.

“Aside from that, some students have paid deposits to the schools they applied to. Some of the schools collect non-refundable administrative fees. Imagine a student paying $625, service fee, visa fee, evaluation fee, DHL fee, totalling about N400,000 and then he is denied a visa.

“This is exploitation of the highest order. We are tired and the embassy should look into it. Some of those conducting the interviews ask irrelevant questions. What they are doing is exploitation by trickery.”

Ayeni asked the US embassy to emulate the Chinese, Japanese and Malysian embassies, which he claimed, demanded money only after granting visas to applicants.

He alleged that the US embassy made a minimum of N57m per day from visa applicants.

“They have about 10 sessions per day, which starts at 6.30am. For each session, they take a minimum of 100 applicants. The embassy collects N57,600 for visa fee per applicant. If that is multiplied by 100 per session, that is N5,760,000. If you multiply that by 10, that is at least N57.6m per day. With at least 22 working days in a month, that is N1.2bn,” he added.

The founder of Solomon World International Education, Shina Adeniji, whose company secures admission for students into foreign schools, said the US embassy should liaise with schools to stop admission if it had problems issuing visas to Nigerian students.

Adeniji, who had been in the business for about 10 years, said the process of securing admission for students were usually tedious.

He said, “Every other embassy, UK, Canada, Spain, will state why you are being refused a visa, but not the US embassy. They will ask you a couple of questions and just say sorry, you are not qualified.

“Usually, they will ask why you chose the school. At the end of the day, they may refuse you because you did not research and choose other schools. Sometimes, they make the decision based on statistics. If you know you cannot accept students, then discuss with the schools not to grant admission.”

A national crisis?

A human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), said the Nigerian government should be blamed for not taking action against the alleged exploitation of Nigerians by foreign embassies.

He said, “There are some embassies in Lagos that make at least N50m in a day. And go see where our people are asked to queue in those embassies. You will be ashamed. No responsible government will allow its people to stand in the rain and sun for hours while attending a visa interview. We are treated like animals; there are no seats in some of the embassies. The interview starts as early as 6.30am and you have to sleep in the place to make the time with all the risks involved or you get a hotel.”

Many reasons have been given for Nigerian students wanting to go to foreign countries to study, with the desire for greener pastures being the foremost.

But the limited admission space in Nigerian universities has also been said to be among the reasons a good number of students seek admission in other countries.

The National Bureau of Statistics said data from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board showed that 11,703,709 applications were received between 2010 and 2016.

That makes an average of 1.6 million applications per year.

However, a report on “JAMB Admitted Candidates by State and Gender within Faculty,” released by the NBS said only 2,674,485 students were admitted across the 36 states and the FCT between 2010 and 2015.

That makes an average of 445,747 admissions per year.

In 2015 alone, only 30 per cent of students who applied were said to have been given admission, which represented the highest from 2010 to 2016.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, in March 2018 told journalists that of the 1,840,225 candidates who applied for admission into tertiary institutions for the 2017/2018 academic session, 842,505 candidates made the required cut-off marks.

He added that of the 842,505, only 550,357 were offered admission.

The number of those given admission represents about 30 per cent of those who applied that year, leaving the remaining 70 per cent figure of 1,289,868 without admission.

Many of the students who fail to secure admission every year form a large chunk of the ones besieging the embassies for visas for foreign studies.

The US Consulate Public Affairs Officer, Mr Russell Brooks, confirmed that the number of Nigerian students seeking admission to US schools was high.

During the 2018 US Education College and Career Fair in Lagos, he reportedly said the Nigerian students’ population in the US was the highest from Sub-Saharan Africa

Brooks reportedly told the gathering that of the more than one million international students currently in the US, 35,364 of them were from Sub-Saharan Africa, while Nigeria has over 11,000 students.

An immigration lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, said there was a crisis in the country’s education sector.

Ogunye, while noting that the Federal Government could take up the US embassy if a case of exploitation was established, said the embassy could not, however, be sued.

The legal practitioner said the emergence of Donald Trump as the President of the US and some of his anti-immigrants policies might also work against youths seeking to study in America.

Ogunye said there was no possibility of a refund of money spent at the embassy since the applicants signed to it.

“If it is established that we are now dealing with a systemic problem and that there is a kind of policy that no matter the merit of the individual case, you will not be granted the visa, in other words, application for visa has now become a money spinner or a revenue earner for the American embassy or any other foreign embassy, the Nigerian government has the duty to complain and take it up at the diplomatic level. Let’s look at your records; 6,000 applications and you granted visa to two. Then we can take it up at that level,” he added.

Former diplomats react

A fellow of the Council of Foreign Relations and former US Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, in a telephone chat with our correspondent, said consular officers decided on visas on a case-by-case basis.

Campbell, who left Nigeria in 2007 and no longer works for the US government, said a lot of factors were usually considered during screening.

He said, “There is a long history of, not just Nigerians, but people from all over the world, who go to the US to study and then refuse to return home. The applicant has to prove to the consular officer that he will return when his visa is due.

“One of the common ways of doing that is to show that he has direct and immediate ties to Nigeria that will pull him or her back to Nigeria.

“For a student visa, there are other sets of requirements, including the institution that the student wants to study at. Is it legitimate? Is the student able to demonstrate that he has sufficient funds to cover the cost of his study? Has he been formally admitted to the institution?”

A retired US diplomat and consular officer at US Department of States, Kathryn Berck, while responding to enquiries on the issues on Quora, a question and answer website, said Nigerians were usually given visas.

She said, “In 2017, only 44.95 per cent of Nigerian applicants for US non-immigrant visas were refused. That is less than half. Why were they refused? They could not convince US consular officers that they intended to visit the US only briefly, and then go home again.

“Part of that inability to convince was due to false/forged/counterfeited documents, and lies of what I call kindergarten quality. It’s too bad that many honest Nigerians are stymied by the dishonesty of others,” she wrote in the post, dated April 14, 2018.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Prof. Bukar Bukarambe, said the agency did not handle such issues.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, did not pick his calls and had yet to respond to two text messages sent to his telephone line last Sunday and Monday.

The US embassy did not respond to our correspondent after over two weeks of sending enquiries.

There was also no official acknowledgement of the email sent to the embassy, although an embassy worker said the questions were received.

PoliticsBuhari May Win 2019 Election –USIP Report by TyroneP(op): 6:00pm On Nov 04, 2018
Buhari may win 2019 election –USIP report

The United States Institute of Peace has said that President Muhammadu Buhari may win the 2019 election .
USIP noted that though many Nigerians stated that his government had not met their expectations , this may not cost the All Progressives Congress its hold on power .
The Institute said this in a report on the forthcoming general election , which it claimed was based on its interactions with Nigerians from different sectors .
The USIP report contradicted the two predictions by The Economist magazine, which stated that Buhari would be defeated in the February poll .

The USIP report read , “Many Nigerians feel their hopes have not been met . Some respondents suggest the electorate is sufficiently disappointed that voter apathy will be greater in 2019 than it was in 2015, with the unifying narrative of change that helped elect the APC in 2015 much less compelling as a factor in mobilising the electorate , and perceptions that another defeat of the presidential incumbent is less likely to happen in 2019 .”
On the possibilities of electoral violence, the report said there may be violence during the elections in Adamawa , Anambra, Ekiti , Kaduna, Kano , Lagos , Plateau , Rivers .
The USIP , however , noted that this could be prevented by the combined efforts of political parties, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission .
The report said that Nigerians expected INEC to perform better than it did in 2015, noting that any regression could set the stage for electoral violence .
“Of all the state ’s institutions , most respondents felt that peaceful elections in 2019 are contingent on the performance of Nigeria ’s INEC ,” the report stated .
The USIP added , “Given the relative success of the 2015 elections , they ( Nigerians ) felt that INEC ought to be able to deliver credible elections again in 2019.
“They feared, however , that any regression from the level of performance achieved in 2015 could lead to violence because some would view the failings not as a result of incompetence but as deliberate attempts to frustrate the will of the voters .
“INEC should at least match the standards it set in 2015, and any regression could set the stage for violence. ”
The report further said despite the projections of violence, there were signs that conflict- mitigation might help in preventing violence across the country .

“My son and the girlfriend Judith have not been quarreling before, but when my son arrived last August he accused the girl of carrying another man’s pregnancy.
“The girl agreed but said my son was responsible. My son said it is impossible because he has not been around, the last time he visited Nigeria was July 2017.
