Politics › Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala Is 'Back To Fix The Economy' by umechuma(op): 3:59pm On Aug 13, 2011
Okonjo-Iweala, who was given a clean bill of health after screening by the Senate, said she was encouraged by patriotic zeal to return home and contribute to repositioning the economy.

While her colleagues assumed duty last June, she had enjoyed a one-month grace of absence to enable her conclude the process of her disengagement from the Washington-based World Bank.

An agency report quoted her as promising that her top priority as minister would be to develop and diversify the national economy such that Nigeria could be less dependent on oil and gas as its economic mainstay.

Describing the task as her biggest challenge, Okonjo-Iweala said the economy required fundamental structuring so as to attract more investors.

Okonjo-Iweala, has been a steady hand at the world’s largest development institution since 2007, where she has had unique insights into the growing role of developing nations in the global economy.

Nigeria is one of Africa’s most dynamic economies but it has enormous problems, including an over-reliance on commodity exports, mismanagement, low investment and a history of powerful vested interests.

“Nigeria has to make some fundamental changes, it has to really diversify its economy,” Okonjo-Iweala told Reuters in an interview on Thursday. “The time is now because investors are interested in the country,” she said.

She said the manufacturing sector was no longer competitive due to increasing power shortages and bureaucratic hurdles, while the agriculture and services sectors had a lot more room to grow, and a flourishing entertainment industry held great potential.

According to the report, one lesson Okonjo-Iweala will bring to bear on her job is that consistent policies and a stable political environment are essential for any economy to flourish.

“We have to show policy consistency in all kinds of ways. It builds trust in the economy, it builds a resilience and that helps enormously,” Okonjo-Iweala said.

It is the second time in eight years that she is leaving the World Bank to return to Nigeria to help transform the nation’s economy.

In 2003 she shook up the country’s finances, fired corrupt officials, boosted transparency and negotiating the cancellation of nearly two-thirds of Nigeria’s $30 billion Paris club debt.

“Why am I going back? I ask myself that question too. I’m passionate about my country and if you have skills and your country calls on you to come and help, at the end of the day it’s very difficult to say no” she said.

Okonjo-Iweala added that, she was encouraged by President Goodluck Jonathan’s political commitment to reform in the country.

“That doesn’t mean I have all the answers. I don’t. The task is daunting,” she said adding: “I hope we’ll succeed but Nigeria is a tough country, and a tough environment, but it is also one of the most exciting countries to do things in.”

As Okonjo-Iweala takes the reins of the country’s economy, she is also aware that the global economic environment has become more difficult over the past several months, with an escalating debt crisis in Europe and high public debt in the United States unsettling markets.

Some economists have warned the world economy could tilt back into recession, which would likely lead to a decline in demand for African exports and push commodity prices lower.

“We will need to look out for the impact on commodities,” Okonjo-Iweala said, adding that demand would be driven by emerging economies like India, China and Brazil that are more important to Africa.

She said African policymakers had increasingly maintained sound economic policies that were attracting more foreign direct investment. The region rebounded quickly after the 2008/09 global financial crisis with growth rates now equal to or exceeding pre-crisis levels of above five per cent.

Okonjo-Iweala said fewer African nations turned to the World Bank for funding to deal with costlier food prices last year compared to the 2008/09 food and energy price crisis.
While this was progress, she said more investments were needed to strengthen the region’s food security systems.

She said the famine in the drought-hit Horn of Africa, was “something of a man-made disaster” and blamed it on the collective failure of the international community to bring peace to Somalia.

Somalia’s worst affected areas are controlled by al- Shabaab militants, who have prevented food aid from getting to people.

An African peacekeeping force has secured about 80 percent of Mogadishu after al Shabaab withdraw at the weekend, opening the way for life-saving food and medicine to get to people who fled to the capital to seek help.

“There is a lack of political will by all actors worldwide to try to secure peace” in Somalia,” Okonjo-Iweala said. “You cannot help farmers, and you cannot help pastoralists, unless there is peace,” she added.

She said the situation in the Horn of Africa “should not colour the success” Africa has had in recovering from the last financial crisis.

Politics › How We Formed Boko Haram, By Spokesman by umechuma(op): 12:44pm On Jul 27, 2011
MAIDUGURI - The Jama’atul Ahlus Sunna Lid Da’awatis Jihad, JASLIDAT, otherwise known as Boko Haram has been quoted by an on-line report that the masterminds of the radical Islamic sect are some prominent Northerners, whose identities would be made public soon.
According to the report, by an adherent of the slain leader of the group, Muhammad Yusuf, who also serves as the spokesman, Mallam Ali Teshako, the sect emerged due to lack of good governance and injustice in the country.

He said the original brains behind the sect’s formation were Northern elite who, under the pretext of sponsoring youths to study in the Middle-East, offered them as mercenaries to countries interested in training terrorists.

The spokesperson of the sect, also known as Yusufiyya, named after its slain leader, said the original name of the group was Taliban. He said Boko Haram was not its name, but that it was given to it by people in the states where they have followers and have been clashing with security operatives.
According to him, those who formed JASLIDAT thought they could manipulate Yusuf into toeing their line, but he resisted.

“If he were alive, he would have spilled the beans on them. Nonetheless, we will reveal their identities at our convenience.”
He said the clashes between the group and security operatives was as a result of provocations by the police. He recalled that in 2009, the police, who had shot dead two of their members, traced them to a cemetery where they went to bury them and wounded 20 more people.

Teshako added: “Not satisfied, they trailed those wounded to a hospital in Maiduguri and prevented them from getting blood donations and treatments. In the wake of all these, we were hounded, chased from our homes, some of us were killed and many were arrested including myself.”

He indicated that many of the atrocities attributed to JASLIDAT were perpetrated by killer-squads funded by some serving and former governors in the North-East. He cited the attack on a police station that was carried out by ECOMOG militia allegedly sponsored by a former Borno State governor. He said, after the attack, his group was blamed.

Dismisses Akhwat Akwop threats

Meantime, Teshako has dismissed the Akhwat Akwop as another “group of vultures” that wants to feast on misfortunes of the apex government.

“This is another group of thieves who want to seek relevance from the government.”

Investigations, however, revealed that in August 2009, shortly after Muhammad Yusuf was killed, he was linked with one businessman Bello Damagum, who was alleged to have been receiving money from an alleged al-Qaeda group in Sudan to recruit youngmen to his organisation.

Part of the funds were also allegedly passed on to Yusuf. In 2004, one Mohammed Salman (aka Ibrahim) was arrested in Lahore in Pakistan and linked to Al-Qaeda.

Same year, the State Security Service,SSS, in Kano, paraded some young men who absconded from an al-Qaeda training camp in Mauritania. The SSS director in Kano then, Sadiq Dalhatu, who is now retired, paraded them, saying they were sent to be turned into “extreme Islamic zealots.”

This led to the arrest and detention of Damagum, a director with Media Trust Limited (publishers of Daily Trust titles), and two others by SSS. Later, a court in Kano ruled that their detention was unlawful and a violation of their fundamental human rights as enshrined under chapter 4 section 35 of the constitution.

Damagum and the other suspects were detained from June 23 to July 7, 2004. They were awarded N150, 000 cost as damages. SSS was also directed to write a public apology to the three applicants, for their unlawful detention.

Teshako, however, said in Damagum was a small fry in the complex matrix of the Boko Haram web created by Northern elites. His claim was corroborated by a news website which reported that evidence of the movement’s emergence gathered by SSS were given to the police which refused to act.

It said: “Inroads made by SSS were thwarted by Muslim leaders who attacked the Director-General of SSS, Mr. Afakirya Gadzama, for trying to humiliate Islam because he is a Christian.”

The report, entitled, ‘Nigeria: al-Qaeda presence in Nigeria has been kept under wraps’ stated that “to allay fears of religious prejudices the SSS chief organised a meeting with some top Muslim leaders and some of the arrested members of Boko Haram. They (the Northern leaders) have come out to accept the findings of the security services.”

Youth Corpers relocate from Borno

Meanwhile, following the insecurity in Borno State as a result of activities of Boko Haram members, only 140 of the 1,254 Batch “B” National Youth Service Corps members posted to the state for their one year mandatory service will remain.

It will be recalled that when the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga, visited the state recently, he directed all corps members who were not indigenes of the state to apply for relocation out of the state which would automatically be approved, as the security situation posed a great danger to their lives.

The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Nuhu Kwaghe, told newsmen, yesterday, after the passing out parade which marked the end of the three-week orientation course of the 2011 Batch B corps members recently deployed in Maiduguri, that all those who had applied for relocation have been approved and most of them would be posted to Yobe, Adamawa, Kaduna, Cross River and Abia states, among others.
He added that NYSC has also approved more than N4 million to convey all the corps members to wherever they were posted to. He stressed that adequate security has been provided for those who had expressed the desire to stay back in Maiduguri.

Tsiga said: “I sympathise with Borno State Government, because most of these corps members are relocating from the state, had it been that the state is safe, they would have remained and they would have contributed to the educational and socio-economic development of the state, as most of them would be posted to rural areas and public schools.”

He,therefore, urged all the corps members to rededicate themselves and be prepared to serve honestly and faithfully as well as appreciate and cherish the culture and traditions of their host communities.

Reacting to the development, the Director of Press to Governor Kashim Shettima, Alhaji Zanna Ciroma, expressed worry over the relocation of corps members from the state, rueing that Borno would not benefit from the immense contributions of corps members who recently concluded their orientation course in the state.

Ciroma said some of the corps members were trained doctors and nurses whose services are needed in most of the health institutions of the state government.

He stated that despite the assurance from government to ensure security of life and property of corps members, some still felt insecure, even as he said normalcy had returned to the state,
He called on the corps members to feel free, as government was doing everything possible to enhance their welfare package in the state.

Cds tasks Service Chiefs, others

Against the backdrop of security challenges facing the nation, Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, yesterday, called for a more proactive leadership among security agencies in combating the problems of Boko Haram and other violent crises rocking the nation.
According to CDS, the time had come for leaders of security agencies to apply strategic and other means of pre-empting dangerous societal outbursts and other threats capable of putting at risks, the peace and stability of the country.

Petirin, who was addressing participants of Course 19 intakes of the National Defence College, Abuja, told the senior officers that the Nigerian Armed Forces, in particular, must imbibe new ways of managing security.

On the recalcitrant Boko Haram menace, the CDS who delivered a lecture, entitled, ‘Leadership; A New Approach in the Armed Forces’ insisted that the armed forces and other security agencies were on top of the security challenges posed by the group.

He said the purpose of the lecture was to re-orientate members of the armed forces towards new ways of doing things, especially as it concerned pro-activeness in the fight against threats of terrorism, violent crimes and other acts capable of undermining the nation.
He spoke after the lecture which was held behind closed doors.

Earlier, Commandant of the college, Rear-Admiral Thomas Lokosun, said most leaders in several spheres of the society had lost sight of what they should be doing to keep the nation safer. He advised members of the armed forces to lead the way in charting the way forward by being more pro-active.

Sect kills district head, daughter

Suspected members of Boko Haram, yesterday, shot and killed Mohammed Ali Lawal, the district head of Bulabulin in Maiduguri at 8 a.m. in Maiduguri.

Alhaji Ali’s attackers numbering three also shot and killed his nine-year-old daughter. A neighbour’s daughter was also caught in the cross-fire. Family sources claimed she sustained serious injuries.

Since its resurgence about a year ago, the sect has targetted and killed several districts heads, Islamic scholars, local officials and security agents in a campaign of violence. (Vanguard)

The United Kingdom on Thursday deported 61 Nigerians, including three minors, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. The deportees were flown into Nigeria in the early hours of the day in a chattered aircraft. Those deported include 47 males and 11 females who were received and screened at the cargo terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport by the officials from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).
An immigration source, who pleaded anonymity, said they were deported for immigration-related offences. Some of the deportees who spoke with NAN alleged that most of them were sent back because their visas have expired.
A deportee, Eniola Adefuja said that her visa had expired since May and she was still in the process of renewing it when she was picked up by the police. She added that she was not allowed to pick up her personal effects before being flown to Nigeria.
Another deportee who simply identified herself as Juliet, claimed that she was also arrested by the British Immigration officer over expired documents. “My visa expired and they said I could no longer reside in the UK; that is why I was brought back home,” she said.

Politics › Boko Haram: Borno Gov Opens Up by umechuma(op): 1:37pm On Jul 17, 2011
Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, has shed light on why the state is conducive for activities of the Boko Haram sect terrorizing the state and other neighbouring ones.

The governor, who traced the history of Islam, fundamentalism and economic challenges of the state, disclosed these in a statewide broadcast to the people of the state on Saturday.

He said the World Bank had described the region of the world to which the state and North-East Nigeria fall as the poorest and most challenged parts of the world, a development that makes the area fertile activities of such dreaded sects.

“The World Bank has described the central region of the Savannah-Sudan, comprising of the areas covered by the North-East Political Zone of Nigeria, the Republic of Chad, Eastern portion of Niger Republic, Northern Cameroons and the Dafur Region of the Republic of Sudan, as being one of the poorest regions on earth.

“The region has very little and mainly dilapidated infrastructure, a population with poor or ill-education and highest level of unemployment, especially among the youths, little or poor authority for mobilisation of people for self-help, a large number of hungry and angry population, inept and bankrupt leadership, little or complete absence of government control, network and other factors for economic progress and social harmony of the area.

“The foregoing scenario provides a fertile ground for the emergence of radical organizations, such as the supporter of APC Militia of the Dafur region and Jama’atul Ahlul Sunnah Lidda’wati wal Jihad, often called Boko Haram by the Nigerian media, in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria,” he said.

While appealing to members of the sect to stop the ‘war’ against their fellow citizens, Governor Shettima, gave assurance of the readiness of his administration to dialogue with all aggrieved sections of the society, adding that he was personally pained by the turn of events in the state, as a bonafide indigene of Maiduguri.

“This administration has already clearly stated its readiness to open channels of communication with all aggrieved sections of the society with a view to bringing this despicable trend to an end. Our doors are open for constructive dialogue and a speedy resolution to this state of insecurity.

“I am personally deeply pained by the trend of events. I am a native of Maiduguri, born and bred right in the heart of Yerwa, from Nimeri Korongoso. Most of the insurgents are from the well known neighbourhood of Shehuri North, Shehuri South, Limanti, Lamisu Gamboru, Fezzan and Hausari wards of the metropolis.

While appealing again to members of Boko Haram to lay down arms, the governor highlighted some of the measures his government was putting in place as immediate and long-term measure to contain poverty and improve the lot of the people of the state.

“One, compensation of all victims of recent crisis will be done with immediate effect. A Committee will be set up and a data base of all victims will be collated and compensated appropriately.

“Two, there will be procurement and distribution of 5000 Keke-NAPEP tricycles and 100 buses to ease in-intra city transport within the metropolis
“Also, there will be purchase of food stuff worth N2 billion for distribution to the people. Four, an economic stimulus package for the business community in the state through the establishment or support for micro-finance bank in every senatorial zone towards the provision of soft loans to traders/marketers and cooperatives to boast and position entrepreneurship will be provided,” he explained.

Among the long-term measures Governor Shettima promised are creation of 500,000 jobs in the next four to six years, with agriculture as the centerpiece of the programme; provision of vocational and skill acquisition centres; and complete revamping and repositioning of the states educational system.

He said the state had just accessed a “N1.7 billion unaccessed funds from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and is putting in place mechanisms for accessing the N3.2 billion unaccessed funds from the Education Trust Fund (ETF).”

He added that he state would also seek to develop strategic plan in the educational sector by committing to the goals of the Northern States Education Action Plan, seeking assistance of DFID, SABMF and Arewa House etc. in this activity.

The governor, however, added that it was not feasible, for now, to move for the evacuation of members of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) from the troubled area as there was yet to be an alternative security arrangement.

“With no intent to denigrate nor question the motives of eminent personalities agitating for withdrawal of the JTF from the state, I regret to note that none has offered a tangible, yet sustainable, alternative to fill the security vacuum to be created in the event of the withdrawal of the JTF,” he noted, Source Tribune

Crime › Confessions Of Shina Rambo, the Notorious Armed Robber! by umechuma(op): 6:56pm On Jul 16, 2011
Shina Rambo was a household name in the world of crime - fearful, ruthless, dangerous and a terror in the society. The former kingpin and a serpent to security agencies is now a professed Evangelist and maverick preacher who is as meek as a dove. In this encounter with Sina Fadare, he poured out his mind on how he tormented Lagosians, the police and how he snatched 42 exotic cars in a day and how he remained invisible for the police dragnet.
What’s your background and where are you actually from?

It is true that people are always confused about where l come from. Actually my father came from Abeokuta in Ogun State, but I from Sanbogida-Ora in Edo State. That is where my mother came from and where l lived all my early life.

How did you acquire the name Sina Rambo?

There is a saying in Yoruba that a child acquires any name that suits him when he was not in his place of birth. That was the appellation l was given in those days when l ventured into the world of crime. The name that was given to me at birth was Omokenwa, meaning a child is the one that takes care of the home. The meaning of Sina Rambo stands for a team or a group of deadly squad with a mission. I was the Rambo. Therefore, the merging of Shina with Rambo is just like any organisation like cooperative society which has each name to identify their group, yet they belong to the same cooperative society. To those people who thought that l came from Cotonou, Republic of Benin, or Sabongida- Ora, they are all correct because wherever you are living or place you are used to, that is your home. Though my father is from Abeokuta, many people did not know me there because apart from Cotonou where my operating business took me, l lived my adolescent life in Edo State, the place of my mother.
At what point in your life did you veer into crime?

Everything comes down to the lackadaisical attitude of my parents in taking adequate care of my need when l was growing up. My father was a military man who married virtually everywhere he was posted to in his career; this gave him the opportunity to have many wives. One of the early memories l could recollect which l will never forget in my life was that my father was the first person to cut me with a cutlass. That is why l said that the nonchalant attitude of my parents dragged me into the world of crime.

Click this bar to view the full image.

Was that actually what led you into crime?

I will say that the moment a child lacks parental care, love and attention, such a child is being nursed towards crime. In my own case it was a combination of many things that led me to the world of crime. Poor and not caring family, later my business was almost grinded when some of my goods were confiscated. Along the line, my younger brother was also killed; in the mission of avenging l was gradually involved in crime and before l knew it l wanted to excel in it. What we called the real Shina Rambo lives inside.

Your name created tremor among people in society, the security operatives inclusive, how did you get such power?

If a child knows how to wash his hand well, definitely he will eat with the elders. I know how to appease the elders, therefore anything l need from them l usually get it. Now that l am in Christ, l know better. The fact is if you decide to eat with the devil, make sure you do it to a logical conclusion and if you want to follow Christ, let him be your sole companion in anything that you are doing. I got power in the world of devil, and l followed it to a logical conclusion. In the world of the devil, police or any security has nothing to do with us, as a daredevil robber then. There are certain things which an armed robber should have. The first is what you call afoola. We used many human beings to do this native medicine, including a foetus in his mother’s womb. The second is ikiya (boldness).

This will give you the audacity and effrontery to do anything at any time no matter how dangerous the venture is. The third one is that anybody who wants to venture into highlevel robbery must be ready to squeeze all the water inside his eye and use it for a powerful medicine, so that there is nothing that would happen that such a person will cry again, no matter how devastating or big such a calamity is. I searched for power from the demons of various types, inside the most powerful water called water of the world at a town called Ogoja. All leaders of the world who are actually looking for power used to go inside this water. At that point when I was on operation l will put on the appearance of different types of people to the extent that it was difficult for anybody to identify my real being. There is no amount of picture that you took that you will get a clear view. That was why when they said that, ‘Oh! they have killed Shina Rambo,’ but it was another person that they would kill instead. From that place, l went to Oke Idanre and later Enugu and Abeokuta to look for power that can make me to be invisible at will.

I was able to have a magical power that allowed me to look differently in eight places. At Abeokuta, the nine herbalists that did the medicine for me were killed so that one day they will not reveal the secret behind the medicine to any mortal. There is a place in Oyo State called Fiditi; lawyers also go there to look for power. Along the line l entered into different cults that are very powerful. There they have to change my body because l was buried alive for seven days in the burial ground and my soul was kept in a small coffin. After the seventh day, l became powerful and more dangerous, too hot to be handled by anybody. Again l went inside the Iroko tree to seek for power. In fact, you will not believe the number of houses that you will find inside the Iroko tree, its a whole town inside the tree. When you get there, you are going to chant some incantations and the door will open, you will see various types of people engaging in activities like selling, eating, having meeting and doing all sorts of things done in the physical world. When l went there, we entered through the ninth door before we entered the town. I was able to do this because l was able to produce for the elders what they needed, so they were ready to give me what l wanted and ready to take me to wherever it would be possible for me to get what l wanted. There was a time l was taken to a burial place with 15 heads to go and to collect some charms from the spirit. From there, l was fortified to the extent that there is no bullet that could enter my body, it will just be like pure water.

What is your relationship with the police?

Normally we and the police are supposed to be enemies, but unfortunately a lot of them are our friends. There are some policemen who are mere saboteurs; they love money more than the job. Such police officers are mole in the force because they sell vital information to robbers and most of the time turned their back when their “friends” are on the road. At this point in time, it is people like us who could assist government to nab criminals because l know their antics and modus operandi. Not all of police are bad, but there are some moles among them that are spoiling their good work. These few ones know the real robbers and most of the time assist them (robbers) to achieve their deadly mission.

You were once rich and famous where is the wealth today?

In the first instance, where did all the luxuries come from? No matter how plenty the devil gives, it is for a short period, he will collect it back. No matter how smart you are, any covenant with the devil, you are going to lose at the end. It is the devil that will give you a cap and in return asking buba and gele from you. Vanity upon vanity all is vanity. There is nothing that one can gain from the devil apart from frustration and humiliation; at the end you are going to have disappointment. You can imagine when I would strike and snatch more than 30 cars. I once snatched over 42 cars in a day. Some of the cars I gave to whomever I wanted. I had so much then. Paul said in Philippians 3:7-13 “But, all that amounted to profit for me in life, I have now seen as loss in Christ”. Verse 13 now says, “Brethren, I have forgotten the things that are behind, I press towards things ahead.” In Psalm 126:1, the same Bible tells me that “when God returns the loss of Zion, we would be like them that dream”. I know that to rise in Christ is the responsibility of every member of the household of faith. The Holy Spirit would use every true Christian to put on real genuine footing. The devil gave me so much at that time and it took what it gave me. If I have to recall the painful details and the anguish, it does not worth it because I am a new creature. What has been destroyed cannot be restored just like that. We are now in Christ, he owns and dispenses eternal joy, when we end our race here, we would return to our eternal home: heaven, where there is no weeping, no anxiety, anguish, hunger and pain.

Do you have any godfather?

Definitely. When we were in Edo, we had our godfather who is always there for us anytime we went on operation. It was the same place that the likes of Anini, a.k.a. the law and Monday Osunbor Pero, and Lucky learnt the rudiment of robbery. We sprung up from one source.

What usually comes to your mind any day you are going for operation?

The first thing that readily came to mind was that ‘the dead must be done’. But before that, we must first ask people who owns the world how the day would look like before we step out. There is a charm called atona (Pathfinder) that we consult before we go out. It would tell us what we are going to do and which sacrifice we are going to make before we move out. Again there is what we call eru (fear) which has been deposited into my body, wherever l go, that fear will not let you challenge my authority.

Where and how did you get the ammunition you were using?

As I told you that my father was a military man, from the beginning gun had been assembled and dismembered in our house. Innocently, my father will be doing this virtually on a daily basis and he tells me to go and bring one or two things that had connection with the gun in the house and at the end he would put the gun together as one. From that daily experience l knew how to handle a gun and by the time l left him, there was no gun l could not put together. Ironically, what parents did not take serious and handle with levity, the kids are fast learning and before you know it, they have mastered the act. If it is a bad habit, the family will definitely pay for it. The gun l was using then was in pieces when brought from outside the country. I later put it together to make it a complete gun. After that l return it into the world of darkness where it was changed to the gun of the elders. After this l just recite a few incantations to the gun and whatever l ask the gun to do is what it will do. However there is no gun that l cannot handle a few minutes after studying it.

Those who are working with you, how were they trained?

There is always time for training; we teach them how to handle it and how to get their target. It was an extensive training which we normally do most of the time especially when we are going on operation. All those that are working with me are all in the same cult, they know our dos and don’ts, we have gone to many places together, that was why it was difficult for the police to kill anyone of us. There is a general charm that the death that is meant to kill anyone of us should kill outsiders. There are some incantations to back it up and it would be backed up in the world of darkness. Therefore anywhere we go on operation, instead of recording any casualty, it is the people around that will die.

Can you recollect how many people your gun had killed?

No, they are just plenty that l cannot remember. Aside from this, l used a lot of people for sacrifice that l cannot even remember. I don’t want to remember those dark days.

Now that you are a pastor, do you believe that there is a curse that actually affected your destiny?

You are right. There is a saying in Yoruba that it is only in war that one can die accidentally, but a curse has a target and no matter the year it was invoked it will still be operational. That crisis and curse entered my life when l was still in my mother’s womb. My father is a polygamist and one day there was a quarrel between my mother and my father’s mother. Then l was told that my father’s mother invoked a curse on my mother that she will never deliver me in peace otherwise she is not from Ikereke (a town in Oyo State) and my mother replied that she will have a normal delivery as God lives otherwise she will not serve God if she comes in the next word. From that altercation from both, the curse entered into my life and l carried the curse and the burden until l met Christ.

How do you handle women and wine?

I engaged in all what you can call devilish ventures, like smoking of Indian hemp, wine and in the company of women of easy virtue. I was in a hotel with about 58 women playing with me, but the warning from the world of darkness is that l should not take any of them to bed. The instruction l followed to the letter. Then l love women but there was a boundary which l must not cross. I am compelled to have fun with my only wife who knew my entire venture into the world of darkness. That was why all the women sent to me cannot do anything to me. Though l spent for them, but that was just the limit l could go.

Is it true that you once spent N50 million a day?

How many of that do you want to count, plenty? There was a time we went for an operation in Lagos, and it seemed we were in a tight corner, we just decided to be giving out the money to the people in order to escape. There was commotion, everybody was trying to pick as many naira notes as they can pick.

Did your friends know the type of person you were?

You know birds of the same feather always flock together. The so-called friends that l was moving with as at then were also into one form of shady deals or the other. But the funny thing is that nobody could identify my being with what l was doing. Even if some of them know me they cannot say it out because it was too dangerous and there was nobody l cannot kill. I usually come out in different faces which made it difficult for anybody to really identify me. That was the power given to me in the world of darkness.

Who was the lady that used to accompany you to all operations?

She was not a human being, though people referred to her as an alhaja, but she was a demon donated to me in the world of darkness. She will dress the way l dressed and must always be with me any time I am going out on operation. She is the one that was picked from the kingdom of Satan to be my partner.

How did you meet Christ?

It was such a miraculous way. I met Christ at a cross road. It was a miracle l did not expect. I met Christ through Prophet T. O. Obadare. I made myself available to the police and l have to bear all the detention and all the agonies l faced for about 11 years. A lot of Christian brothers rallied round me with conviction that l should give my life to Christ. Then Papa Obadare came to me in the prison that though l was expecting death, God has removed death from my head if I am ready to surrender everything to him. In my own thinking l thought all was over, with all the atrocities l had committed, but God showed me mercy and gave me the second chance. So when l slept, l saw that the cloth of yoke and burden was removed from my neck, l was off from the bondage of Satan, a new cloth was given to me. By the time l woke up, l was talking in tongues. From that encounter, for the first time in my life that my soul would calm down, l learnt how to pray. I stopped taking cocaine and Indian hemp. Everything about me became new.

What do you think government can do to stop robbery?

The simple truth is that we cannot stop robbery, but we can reduce it to the barest minimum, because we asked for it. In Matthew 27, we asked for it. They said Barnabas should be released instead of Jesus Christ, when Pilate said that this man did not commit any sin. They said no way, release Barnabas and let his blood be on us and on our children. Ever since then robbery and killing became the order of the day. Government should be able to tap from the wealth of experience of people like us who can decode a lot of knotty issues as regard how to curb the menace of armed robbery. Some of those that are inside the prison are not supposed to be there. By the time they are out, they become hardened criminals. I pray that God will help us to make things work in this country, if he could locate me from the pit of darkness where l sojourned, and now in Christ, he will deliver the country from bad leaders who make things difficult for the masses.

You neither give amnesty nor negotiate with terrorists

The northern Muslim extremists and boko haram sect are terrorists. You do not negotiate, give amnesty or declare state of emergency to keep them out. Jonathan should not contemplate any of these. The Niger Delta militants’ issue that is purely economic cannot be compared with the northern Muslim extremists' violence that is purely religious and politically orientated.

All those involved in the violence and to make the country ungovernable are not actually known. The Muslim extremists and boko haram sect people are operating in the whole Northern States and Niger State in the Middle Belt. State of Emergency in Borno State alone is neither feasible nor it is any solution to the violence. Let the North destroy it self by the violence it created if the people do not want the JTF to solve the violence. The rest of the country has the choice to live with or cut off the North.

History is there for us all. We cannot continue to lose innocent lives. The Northern Muslims’ violence and drawbacks are recurring decimal that will never cease. We cannot continue to live in their state of insecurity, instability and backwardness. The actual enemies in the northern Muslims’ extremism are not known. It is time to take decision. There are two alternatives on offer.

One, Jonathan should seek amendment of the Constitution.

The amendment should state categorically that religion or whatever individual worship is his/her personal affairs and that the secular state of Nigeria stands full and final.

-Religion should not and must not have anything to do with the country officially, at National, State and Local levels, in terms of law making, separate laws, Courts, doing business, sectarian ways of doing business and other things, harassing or violence against people of different belief.

-All the previous preferences in the Constitution that specifically favour the Muslims such as separate Appeal Court, etc. should be expunged. The Constitution should be completely neutral and main fully the principles of secularism.

-Public money should never be used for any religion pilgrimage by any individuals.

-The immunity clause in the Constitution for any public officer should be expunged except that any case or suit that concerns non financial and murder crimes be deferred after the office of the public officer. That is there should not be immunity for financial and murder crimes while in office.

-The structure of the Nigeria Government should be a two tier system of the Federal and Local Governments. The current State Government structure that is a huge drain on the country, which prevents the Federal Government from reaching out to the people and prevents the Local Governments from functioning at the grassroots level, should be scrapped within the next two years.

-Then there should be other desirable amendments that are not stated here such as leadership rotation.

Two, if any region of the country objects to these amendments, in the alternative, there should be a Referendum as whether we want to live together as one country. In my opinion, as I stated before, the country could be split into two as follow:

1) The North West and North East with the Niger and Nassarawa States and Abuja;

2) The South East; South South; South West; and Plateau, Kogi, Kwara, Benue and Taraba States of
the Middle Belt and southern part of Adamawa State to join the rest of the Southern parts of the
country that comprise of the South South, South East and South West for a harmonious new
Nigeria.

For this to be amicably done there should be a plebiscite. We Nigerians should be asked;

Do you want Nigeria to split into two countries of North and South?

Vote YES or NO.

In order not to say they were forced to join either side and for their harmony, the Middle Belt States of Plateau, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, Niger, Nassarawa and Taraba, Abuja, Kaduna South and Adamawa South would each be asked additional question as; Do you as a State area wants to join the North or the South in the split?

Vote YES or NO.

If the majority vote to split the country is NO on both sides, we will stay together and limp on with the handicap of the country and the problems one side inflicts on the other. If the majority vote is YES on both sides or is YES only on one side, we will split into two countries. The majority vote of each State of the Middle Belt as to which part it wants to belong would be respected

As of 2006, a record 7 million people were behind bars, on probation or on parole, of which 2.2 million were incarcerated.Since 1964, the U.S. crime rate has increased by as much as 350%, and over 11 million crimes were reported in the year 2007 alone. The US homicide rate, which has declined substantially since 1991, is still among the highest in the industrialized world. There were 17,034 murders in the United States in 2006 (666,160 murders from 1960 to 1996).Again compare saudi arabia that practices sharia and america which is a christian nation.you claim you don't need the help of ismaic country but is it not the delta state government that is going to build the biggest refinery in africa with saudi arabian help?where is the christian cleric that led demonstrations against islamic banking in delta state, why is he mute on this one?age long christian hypocracy at work. You say islam is evil,at least islam wont be held responsible for priests who vow celibecy only to prey and comfort in young boy's brought under their care in the catholic church with active conivance of the pope who sweeps everything under the carpet after allegations surface.

You failed to mention the success of Sharia Law in the countries that practice them. The countires I mentioned have been practicing Sharia Law for decades but in 2011 are having revolting against Sharia Law and calling for democracy including Saudi Arabia and almost all other Arabia countries.Sharia does not have any element of human and scientific development except terrorism and islamic studies which does nothing to development but distruction of human race world including liberal Moslems. The US and other western countries may not have a perfect system but they have transformed the world and made it possible for you and I to be in front of our computers with internet to express our opinion on how to advance development further. Can you please tell me one significant technological development a Sharia country has made in the modern world if not terrorism.China,India,Brazil and other fast developing countries are doing so because they have no element of Sharia law.Religion in government does not develop any country.

Iran is an official sponsor of terrorists around the world including Boko Haram and adopted Sharia Law in the country in 1979.Any meeting with them and Nigeria will be on how to adopt Sharia law and Islamic banking in Nigeria and possibly anti-west policy.Nigeria does not need the help of an Islamic country if we want to develop because Islam is an evil religion and no full time Islamic country has developed in the world.Saudi Arabia,Libya,Syria,Jordan,Iraqi,Lebanon,Pakistan,Egypt,Tunisia,Sudan,Somalia,Afghanistan etc have been practising Sharia law which lead to poverty, unemployment,Life presidents and corruption in the region for decades now.
Unfortunately northern Nigerian leader have refused to learn anything from the experiences of the countries above because of their illiteracy and backwardness.

It's extremely difficult to be a Borno Muslim now. You get killed by Boko Haram. You get killed by JTF and get insulted on Nairaland. How about that.

I think this problem has been going on because no single PDP member has been killed so far. And that's the interesting thing about it, for all the politicians being killed in Borno state, it seems PDP members are immuned to Boko Haram. They are not even threatened talk less of being attacked.

And FYI, the elders are talking now because the JTF have made public announcements that if they are attacked again, they will kill any male child of 15 years and above in that area. Actually the soldiers have not been fighting to protect the people, they are simply taking revenge. Don't forget that the soldiers have been in Maiduguri for close to a year extorting money from people at checkpoints. Now the bombs have started affecting them directly and they are suddenly killing everybody.

Boko Haram usually kill politicians, clerics and community leaders but JTF is killing every male child they find around.

And please, the Boko Haram thing is not a Muslim vs Christian thing. It's funny that southern Christians are the ones propagating this idea. Our Christians in Maiduguri know it's a general menace where no one is safe.
Your comment is among the dumbest i have seen in recent days concerning Boko Haram because your are not telling the truth, can you list how many boron politicans, clerics and community leaders that was killed by Boko Haram.JTF should take any means necessary to deal with them and if need arrest the so-called elders and charge them with aiding and abdating criminals.Am very sure you a member too, your time will soon be up,terrorists northerners.

Politics › Fed Govt Deletes 43,000 Ghost Workers From Payroll by umechuma(op): 11:20pm On Jul 11, 2011
Forty-three thousand ghost workers were expunged from the Federal Government’s payroll, former Minister of Finance, Mr Olusegun Aganga, has said.

He also said a N50billion Public Works Programme geared towards job creation and a N10billion mass transit scheme, a programme which will ease transportation before the Abuja/Katsina rail project comes on stream, have been incorporated into the 2011 budget.

Aganga disclosed these at the weekend in Lagos, shortly after receiving the Young Men’s Christian Association award for exemplary public office life.

He said the removal of the “ghost workers” from the payroll was achieved in the last one year through the implementation of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

Aganga said the country had to trim its personnel cost, which formed a major part of the unnecessary costs distorting the country’s expenditure pattern.

He noted that personnel cost increased from N850billion to N1.3trillion between 2009 and 2010, adding that with the implementation of the IPPIS in 36 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), it was discovered that 43,000 people should not have been on the government’s payroll.

He said: “As part of the Federal Government’s effort to reduce the level of recurrent expenditure, in particular, personnel cost, which represents more than 50 per cent of recurrent expenditure, we have deepened the implementation of the IPPIS programme in the last year and have identified 43,000 names, which should not have been on the payroll. This will lead to considerable savings.”

Aganga, whose new portfolio has not been officially announced, disclosed that the implementation of the IPPIS in the 36 MDAs had been divided into three phases and that the first phase, which covered seven MDAs, saved the country over N12billion.

According to him, the savings represent the difference between releases to the MDAs based on their nominal roll submissions before enrolment into the IPPIS and the actual salaries paid through IPPIS after the exercise.

He said the second and third phases will cover 11 and 18 MDAs .

“We had to take action to reduce the overhead cost, that was why we introduced the IPPIS, where you take workers’ ‘biodata’, they thumbprint and salaries are paid directly through bank accounts. We’ve done that in 36 MDAs, but the exercise is ongoing. When it is completed, we expect to see considerable savings,” Aganga said.

Besides, he noted that in the 2011 budget, the government also reduced the level of overhead for both the executive and the legislature by 30 per cent and the level of borrowing from about N1.3trillion to N850billion.

Acknowledging that the 2011 budget signalled the beginning of the fiscal consolidation process, Aganga, stressed the need for the country to deepen the fiscal consolidation exercise.

“The introduction of the performance-based budgeting, where every penny spent has to be accounted for, is also to reduce government expenditure, while the multi-year budgeting system will reduce the incidence of uncompleted projects,” he said.

Bomb blast wounds 20 in Kaduna
A bomb blast at Fokado Street, off Maiduguri Road in Kaduna, on Sunday left more than 20 people seriously injured.

A victim of the blast, Mr. Solomon Aliyu, 34, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) shortly after the incident that the blast occurred around 11:20 p.m., destroying three buildings in the area.

Aliyu, who sustained an injury on his left leg from the blast, was treated at a nearby clinic.

He said that other victims with serious injuries were on admission and were being treated at Alba and Logus clinics on Constitution Road and Maiduguri Road by Oshogbo Road respectively.

Aliyu, who said he was escorted home by soldiers after receiving treatment at the Alba clinic, said that security personnel were combing the area for suspects.

The coordinator of the Joint Security Taskforce (Operation Yaki) in the state, retired Col. Gabriel Mamman, could not confirm the blast, but promised to do so after ascertaining the true position of things.
