Politics › Boko Haram Restates Conditions For Peace by umechuma(op): 4:05am On Oct 03, 2011
Our conditions for peace, by Boko Haram

ABUJA— Members of the Jaamatus Ahlus Sunnah Lid Daawatis Wal Jihad, a.k.a. Boko Haram yesterday celebrated the inability of the Federal Government to celebrate the nation’s 51st independence anniversary at the Eagle Square owing to threats by the group and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), to bomb the nation’s capital city if the celebration went ahead.

Members of the sect have also restated their determination to continue to unleash terror on government and its security forces, should the federal government refuse to meet their earlier demands.

It will be recalled that after the federal government announced that the celebration will be low keyed and denied insinuations that the low key celebration was due to fear of MEND or Boko Haram, there was a military and Police parade inside the Presidential Villa, with foreign ambassadors, High Commissioners’ and Chief de missions present at the villa to celebrate Nigeria’s 51st Independence anniversary.

Vanguard was told by security sources, that they have intelligence reports indicating that members of the Boko Haram sect celebrated their ability to restrict the independence anniversary to Aso Rock rather than the national ground, Eagle Square, where such occasions are usually held.
Incidentally, security measures put in place following the threats of the two groups are still in place and will remain for days as security agencies feel, both groups especially Boko Haram were put at bay because of the heavy security presence and checks going on in the FCT.

According to the source, “we have not rested since last Thursday and there is no indication that we would rest soon because we may be deceived that they have had a change of mind to attack. So the security cordons will go on until we are satisfied the risk threats have reduced”.

Meanwhile, spokesman of the group, Abu Qaqa in an email message sent to newsmen written in Hausa language yesterday said that “the country would not have peace until there is 100 per cent implementation of Sharia law in the country as enshrined in the holy Quran as well as immediate release of all our members who were detained and in the custody of security agencies for no just cause”.

He said the group was not satisfied with the report of the Presidential committee on Security in the north on possible negotiation with the federal government, adding that the members were even surprised that the committee told the world, that they have had a meeting with the sect in the course of their investigation, insisting that no committee ever sat with the group.

He dismissed the recommendation of the committee on the involvement of the Sultan of Sokoto, Emir of Bauchi or Abubakar Giro in the negotiation talk saying, “all these people are not respected by the sect members, and could not mediate for them”.

Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen yesterday shot and killed an Igbo butcher in broad daylight at the popular Baga Road Market. There was also a reported incident of an explosion at the same Baga Road which claimed two lives while some were seriously injured. Following these incidents, most shops in the market remained closed.

Politics › Independence Shocker:world Oldest Preacher Says Nigeria May Split By 2015 Except by umechuma(op): 12:36am On Oct 02, 2011
When one considers his age, he or she will expect that president/founder of Christ Gospel Apostolic Church, CGAC, Pa Samuel Akinbode Sadela should be growing weaker and weaker but the reverse is the case. At the age of 111, the world’s oldest preacher and longest serving pastor was on Saturday, August 27, 2011, full of hope and expectations after 79 years on the pulpit.

His dentition is complete, his memory is sharp and his sight has not grown deem but he wears a pair of glasses strictly based on medical recommendation. He resides in a storey building where he descends the stairs once daily to carry out daily routine. With a handshake and some words of pray-ers, he welcomed this reporter to his premises at Soluyi Area of Gbagada in Lagos where the 20 minutes interview was conducted.

Decked in a white attire, with a black cap and a pair of black sandals to match, his smile was articulate and co-ordinated. Papa’s primary concern is soul winning. He forbids the use of church fund to equip himself, as a result, all he owns were gifts from people who believe they have been blessed by his contributions to the vineyard of God. Pa Sadela uses his own funds to develop other men of God who have performed creditably well in their soul winning assignment. He builds homes and buys cars for them to encourage their ministerial assignment.

Papa who was born into a pagan family in 1900 to Princess Adetiye and her husband, Pa Sadela in Ifon, Ondo State, set-tled in Lagos some decades back. The young Sadela left his parents at the age of 14 in search of formal education which his parents could not give him. He confided in Vanguard that an Angel taught him the use of the Holy Bible before he struggled to major out his elementary education solely.

Politics › Acf Plans Conference On Boko Haram by umechuma(op): 10:55am On Oct 01, 2011
The ACF BOT and NEC after having marathon meetings between yesterday and this morning have issued a communique but cleverly omitted the major item discussed, namely, how the North can reclaim power in 2015. The fact that the ACF suppressed that information shows that they want to go underground in implementing their strategies which are tailored to ensure that a core Northern Hausa Fulani hardliner emerges as President in 2015 and roll back some of the progressive policies of the last 12 years which are seen as against the interest of the North.
Recent utterances of by CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to the effect that Nigerians "must accept Islamic banking" and the recent attacks on targeted and specific banks are initial steps in implementing the agenda of the ACF.
Some believe that the utterances of leading light of the ACF are code words that are being used to activate sleeper cells in the North to initiate activities that will keep the Jonathan administration busy and distracted while the ACF unfolds its agenda.
Recent comments by Malam Tishau, co founder of Boko Haram, seem to suggest that he has sympathetic persons in the top echelon of the intelligence services who arranged for him to be interviewed by the media in order to discredit the present administration.
While all these may appear to be random events, sources close to NaijaPundit have revealed to us that these are carefully scripted and orchestrated events initiated and implemented by certain prominent persons with a view to dictating the political direction of Nigeria in 2015.

Politics › Army Chief Confirms Foreigners’ Involvement In Boko Haram's Bombings by umechuma(op): 4:55am On Sep 28, 2011
Boko Haram: Army Chief Confirms Foreigners’ Involvement In Bombings

ABUJA-AHEAD of the 51st Independence anniversary and continued threat posed by Boko Haram, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Onyeabor Azubuike Ihejirika, said yesterday, that despite successes recorded by the Army in its onslaught against the group, there was still need for better performance.

General Ihejirika spoke  even as he declared that there was foreign collaboration in the activities of the terrorist group, especially in the area of training of sect members in some African countries and funding from abroad but chose not to mention names.

The Army chief, who spoke at the 2011, third quarter, Chief of Army Staff Conference, also disclosed that he had taken the issue of welfare of officers and soldiers of the Army under his command as priority.

Reasons for grumbling

Iherijika who said no soldier could say his welfare or salaries and allowances were being toyed with, noting that there should be no reason for grumbling in that regard, noted: “Yes, it is true people say we (Army) have been doing well in handling the Boko Haram menace.

This quarterly conference is, however, borne out of my belief that, in spite of the commendation, the expectation, both from my office and the public, is that a situation where bombings continue to go on in spite of measures put in place is unacceptable.

“So we (General Officers Commanding, Principal Staff Officers, Corps Commanders, Brigade Commanders and Formation Commanders) need to really dissect our modules of operations and then we work and cooperate with others so as to come up with measures that will enhance security.”
Asked if it was true that foreign nationals from Niger, Sudan and Chad have been arrested in connection with the Boko Haram bombings and attacks, Ihejirika said: “Let me start with the involvement of Boko Haram or terrorist activities in Nigeria. It is definite that the groups that call themselves Boko Haram or terrorist receive training and possibly funding from elements abroad.

“This was evident from the type of weapons we have captured from them; the type of communication equipment we have captured from them; and the expertise they have displayed in preparation of improvised explosive and these are pointers to the fact that there is foreign involvement in the terrorism going on in Nigeria.”

On whether security agencies would ever contain and curtail the terrorist menace and restore the country to normalcy, he said: “What I want to say is that the Army will live up to the expectations of Nigerians and the army is prepared to carry out any task assigned to it. The issue of curbing security is a collective thing running from government at various levels, well meaning citizens and all the security agencies. But what I want to assure you is that the Army will cooperate and collaborate with other security agencies to improve on our present performance.”

When asked if he was aware that issues of allowances and welfare was raising dust among soldiers, the Army chief said: “As far as I am concerned, the officers and soldiers are getting their welfare as at when due and at the right time. Before I took over, the Army used to be paid last but today, there is no service that pays salaries and allowances before the Army.

In any case if there are complains on welfare, I want that to be brought to my knowledge but there is a general improvement in the welfare of officers and soldiers and in the provision of accommodation, a lot is going on now and most of the projects will be commissioned before the end of November.”

Politics › CCB To Charge 15 Ex-Govs To Court For Lying by umechuma(op): 4:52am On Sep 28, 2011
15-ex-govs-for-trial-tribunal

ABUJA—The Code of Conduct Bureau said, yesterday, that 15 former governors will soon be charged to court for lying in the assets declaration forms they filled while in office.

Chairman of the Bureau, Mr Sam Saba, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Abuja also justified the decision of the Bureau to let some governors off the hook.

He, however, insisted that former Governor of Lagos state and leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, has a case to answer before the conduct tribunal over allegations of operating foreign accounts while in office.

Confirming that 15 former governors will soon be charged to court, Mr Saba said: “I want to assure you that verification of the assets of some of the ex-governors is still ongoing including that of those who are still in power.

As it stands today, Borno and Plateau are the only states where we have not requested their governors and public officers to report for verification and this is due to the problem posed by the Boko Haram sect. However, at the appropriate time, we will make public the outcome of our investigations and if it is established that any of them defaulted, we will accordingly charge them before the tribunal. But till then, we are not ready to try anyone on the pages of the newspaper”, Saba added.

He refuted allegations that the trial of Asiwaju Tinubu was a calculated witch-hunt exercise aimed at stifling opposition leaders in the country.

According to him: “The Bureau wishes to reiterate its position that the trial of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no political undertone. It has been an ongoing case since year 2006. Admittedly, the case has taken such a long time due to some factors- the need to conduct thorough investigation and the time taken to constitute the full compliment of the tribunal after the death of the former chairman, Justice Sanni Murtala, SAN.

“The Bureau wants to use this medium to call on the good and patriotic citizens of Nigeria to report to it any public office holder breaching the provisions of Code of Conduct for public officers, and wish to assure you that the Bureau has the capacity to deal with the situation no matter how highly placed the person is.

“Of recent, the Bureau has observed with some amusement, the campaign of calumny being perpetuated against it by a section of the press which has been issuing some stories based on conjectures, deliberate falsehood and sensational amplification of issues all with a view to pulling down the institution and its structures.

“Further to the above, the issue of arraigning public officers before the Code of Conduct Tribunal has never been an issue of the board to discuss and take decisions. There are structures on the ground established by the board to carry out that responsibility; the ‘assets verification committee’ and the ‘petition screening committee’. Any officer that is established to have breached any provisions of the code of conduct for public officers after diligent investigation by any of the above committees is referred to the legal unit of the bureau for prosecution before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. So why should the case of Bola Ahmed Tinubu be different?

“Also it should be noted that the case of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which had started since the year 2006, had pre-dated the coming of the present board which was inaugurated in April 2010.

However, if the chairman is said to be taking a central position in the activities of the bureau vis-à-vis the case of Bola Ahmed Tinubu that is very understandable because he is the chairman of the organization and its principal spokesman. This however should not be maliciously misconstrued as disagreement between him and the federal commissioners.”

It will be recalled that Tinubu was on September 21, docked before a 3-man panel of justices at the Code of Conduct Tribunal sequel to allegations that he operated 10 foreign accounts whilst in office between 1999 and 2007.

Meanwhile, the CCB boss who spoke yesterday alongside four commissioners of the Bureau, also adduced reasons why some former governors who were ab-initio accused of violating the Code of Conduct for Public officers whilst they were in office, would no longer face prosecution.

Saba said the CCB decided to drop the cases against the ex-governors after they admitted guilt and made restitution to the Federal Government, even as he specifically named the former governor of Jigawa State, Saminu Turaki, among those that benefitted from the said process. He declined to reveal the identity of other indicted ex-governors who embraced the ‘plea-bargain’ option.
