A public appeal for funds to treat of a victim of ovarian cancer, Mayowa Ahmed, generated more than N80 million a few days after the campaign was launched through the efforts of Nollywood actress, Toyin Aimakhu, and Miss Aramide Kasumu, the director of Lifestake Foundation, a Lagos-based non governmental organisation (NGO). The idea was to raise funds for a surgery that would be carried out on Mayowa in a hospital in Atlanta, United States of America. Nigerians, big and small, rose to the challenge and contributed generously to the #GoFundMe campaign such that about N82 million was raised within a short time But Mayowa’s ugly story would later turn uglier as efforts to save her life was later enmeshed in controversy, following Aimakhu’s alleged declaration in the social media that the fund raiser was a scam. The police, who intervened in the matter and froze the account where the sum raised was deposited, after investigating the allegations the two parties levelled against each other, described the controversy as a mere misunderstanding. Another window of opportunity to save Mayowa, who at the time was a stage IV cancer patient, opened when the police lifted the ban on the account, opening the way for her to be transferred to a hospital in South Africa, whcih had allegedly offered to carry out a surgery to save her life. However, it turned out an effort too little too late, as Mayowa, who was flown to South Africa for treatment on August 10 died 11 days later. Her death was announced by a family member, Asiwaju Foye, in a series of tweets. The tweet had stated: “By Allah, in whose hands our lives is, Mayowa Ahmed has left us in this world. We pray that Jannat becomes her home #RipMayowa. She tried, we tried but God’s will prevailed #RipMayowa.” More @ http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/after-her-death-fresh-controversy-on-save-mayowa-campaign-funds-erupts/

Barcelona confirm they passed up option to beat Manchester United to Paul Pogba transfer, Director Albert Soler revealed they had “a priority option” but instead opted to sign Andre Gomes. The Nou Camp club were understood to have agreed a deal 12 months ago that would give them priority should they wish to sign the 22-year-old for £85million, but – as revealed by MirrorFootball – they informed Barca in February that they wouldn’t be exercising their option. And Albert Soler, the club’s director of sporting relations, moved to clarify that Pogba could have been a Barcelona player today had they wanted to follow through on the deal. “Last year we reached a deal with Juventus for us to have a priority option when they sold Pogba,” he said. On September 1, 2016 ENUGU—Piqued by the slaughter of 17 hapless natives of Enugu State in the past four months by rampaging Fulani herdsmen, the Civil Liberties Organization, CLO, yesterday, alleged that President Muhammad Buhari’s inaction on the killings suggests that he is behind the dastardly acts. Armed Fulani-herdsmen CLO said had a similar orgy befallen another country in Africa, Europe and other parts of the world, Buhari would have been the first to condemn the killings while he turns a blind eye on the endless killings of his fellow country men and women. Continuing, CLO, also vowed to follow, inch-by-inch, the arrest last Monday, of one herdsman, Ibrahim Adamumale, 20, nabbed in Affa, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State for allegedly being in possession of a sophisticated gun, an AK-47 rifle with 24 rounds of live ammunition. CLO’s anger was against the backdrop of the arrest by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP’s Intelligence Response Team, IRT, on the alleged masterminds of April 25 Nimbo massacre of 13 natives, based on credible technical intelligence. The suspects arrested in the Nimbo attack were: Mohammed Zurai, Ciroma Musa, Sale Adamu, Suleiman Laute, and Haruna Laute. They lamented that the country has never been polarized along ethnic lines as it is now. Member, CLO Board of Governors, Alhaji Danjuma Gambo said: ”We are wondering whether the president, who ran for office, four consecutive times never had an agenda for Nigeria. With a little above one year in office, the country is now in a terrible mess where people can no longer sit down peacefully in their own ancestral homes. “The development that a herdsman was arrested by Police last Monday is not the first. Exactly four months ago, the same Fulani herdsmen attacked Nimbo, killing about 13 persons. This is apart from burning of houses, raping of women and children and destruction of farmlands. LAGOS, Nigeria —Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s visit to Nigeria, his first to sub-Saharan Africa, has put the country’s tech businesses firmly in the world’s spotlight. Zuckerberg staged a surprise visit to the country’s economic capital Lagos on Tuesday and his first stop was a local innovation center and tech hub in Yaba, an area on the mainland of Lagos known as Nigeria’s Silicon Valley. There was no fanfare amid tight security and some of those working at the Co-Creation Hub, called CcHUB, didn’t even know Zuckberg was coming. He appeared nervous, a little startled even, as he launched into an impromptu speech about why he was there. He said: “This is my first trip to sub-Saharan Africa. I’ll be meeting with developers and entrepreneurs, and learning about the startup ecosystem in Nigeria. The energy here is amazing and I’m excited to learn as much as I can.” At the CcHUB, he talked to children at a summer coding camp and entrepreneurs who visit the center to build and launch their apps. Zuckerberg thrilled Nigerians by walking around the streets of Lagos without any signs of armed guards or heavy security. He was also spotted jogging on the Lekki Bridge on Wednesday morning. Figures released Wednesday show Nigeria has officially dipped into recession as its second quarter GDP fell by more than 2% compared to last year. However, running a business in the country has always been tough for young entrepreneurs such as Bosun Tijani and Femi Longe, who co-founded the hub Zuckerberg visited in 2011. Declares N’Delta Avengers worse than Boko Haram A member of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and former presidential aide, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, yesterday took on those calling for the restructuring of the country, suggesting that if the amalgamation of the country by Lord Frederick Lugard in 1914 was a mistake, it would be best for each region to go their separate ways. Abdullahi made this known during the launch of two books by Dr. Hadiza Isa Wada titled, “Boko Haram: The Charade vs. Reality” and “The Life and Times of Umaru Turakin Bauchi”. He queried agitators clamouring for the restructuring of the country from the present quasi-federalism to true fiscal federalism, or even secession, particularly in the South-south and South-east geopolitical zones. According to him, such threats remained baseless, given that no region is afraid of secession. Tracing how several other countries had separated peacefully, Abdullahi argued that contrary to the opinion of some government officials, Nigeria’s unity was negotiable. “The batures (Hausa for white people) have brought us together. They tried what they could before they left in 1960 to see whether this country could become a political unit that is stable, because without political stability it is impossible to stabilise any aspect of our socio-economic development. “They succeeded up to a point, but they were very lucky because they had our forefathers and founding fathers who were honest. “We might not be one, in terms of language or in terms of geographical location or in terms of customs or in terms of history or in terms of religion and so on, but as a people put in one country our first job is to understand one another. “Let’s understand one another. Understanding one another will be the basis for working together. This wish of being one is Utopian because if you look at examples of other parts of the world there’s a lot to learn from. “Take for example India that got independence in 1948, yet one or two years later Pakistan was created, and in another one or two years, Bangladesh emerged out of Pakistan, because there was insufficient basis on which India would stay together in the first place,” he said. Abdullahi held the view that Nigeria’s greatest challenge today is political instability “created unfortunately by politicians and the Nigerian elite”. “We are responsible for the conditions we’re experiencing today and that we have experienced over the years. This is the basis on which we have made slow or no progress in our development and I think we can accept this as a fact, or continue to pretend and go round and round and round in circles and at the end of the day come back to the same spot. “What are we hearing? We’re hearing about the restructuring of Nigeria. We’re hearing about secession, we’re hearing all sorts of things and who are the promoters of this rhetoric? “This is coming from the elite of the country. They’re right to speak their minds, but they should also leave me to speak my mind when the time is right because we cannot continue, because I remember in the last four or five years, particularly when we were headed towards the last elections. We saw all that and then I said it was time. “If Lugard made a mistake in 1914 let’s correct it now. Why not? If Nigerians cannot live together and allow peace and development to reign, then let’s go our separate ways and to our different places so that we can concentrate and develop our children and grandchildren in peace. “There’s nothing wrong with that. So many countries have gone through that before. So I don’t believe in all these emotions and sentiments that Nigeria is indissoluble,” he said. Continuing, Abdullahi said there was nothing like indissolubility in any country. “Take Great Britain, they’ve been a model for 1,000 years of democracy and then a year or two ago Scotland that had been in the union for about 350 years opted for a referendum to get out; same problem with Ireland. “The Soviet Union was a super power many years ago, today 12 or 13 countries were created from it. “So what is so special about Nigeria? If we find truly that we cannot develop and guarantee the welfare of our people as a nation and the solution is to go our separate ways, why not? “So you see this is the thing we have to always discuss at all times honestly, especially if we put into context the history of Boko Haram,” he noted. On the terrorist sect, he said the “ragtag boys” who were fed up with the things happening to them became members of Boko Haram. “You ask the question where did Boko Haram got their sophistication and articulation from? No doubt from external connections, but external connections can only thrive if they have internal connections in the country itself. “But then came robberies and Boko Haram was blamed, then came in political interference. “Bombs were also put in churches and mosques and they were not entirely put by Muslims but by both religions. But the real offence was people who knew and should have spoken out did not do so. “Some of us including my teacher and I went to see (Goodluck) Jonathan to discuss it. Some days later, and we heard there was going to be some dialogue, but then two weeks later a state of emergency was declared and Boko Haram was banned. “So the question is who are you dialoguing with if you have banned Boko Haram? These are some of the contradictions we saw, which were clearly political. “We the northerners were taking the brunt of it. And those who ought to have said something stayed quiet. It was Murtala Nyako who came out and said something was going on and before you know it he was on exile,” he stated. August 30, 2016 A pastor, Mr Timothy Ngwu, was on Monday docked at an Enugu North Magistrates’ Court for allegedly marrying another man’s wife, daughter as well as another woman. Veronica Ngwu, the pastor’s wife was said to have petitioned the court over the development. The victims whom Ngwu converted to his ‘wives’ were said to be members of his church: Gods’ Favour Ministry, Nsukka. One of the victims, Mrs Calista Omeye, however, told the court that her husband, Mr Fidelis Omeye, had persuaded her to meet the pastor as he wanted her to do the will of God through the pastor. “My husband was a member of the church and he introduced me to the church because he said that the pastor had a revelation for me (Calista). She said the revelation had to do the will of God but he later left the church but I refused to leave the church with him. http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/pastor-docked-for-marrying-another-mans-wife/

The player is to get an extra holiday time over the international break, according to Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has surely enjoyed a very good start to his career at the club by scoring in the Community Shield match then adding another three goals in three Premier League games, played on successive weekends. Having retired from playing for Sweden after Euro 2016, the player will not have any international duty next weekend, but United manager Mourinho still wants to protect him further. Mourinho said: “At 34 years old, you need to rest. You cannot play 70 matches a season. So I give the other guys, who are not selected for the national teams, two days — and I give four days to Zlatan. I give holidays a la carte. It depends on the situation. And he is playing every match, every minute. So four matches, he played 360 minutes — four days off for the big guy.” More @ http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/manchester-uniteds-zlatan-ibrahimovic-to-get-extra-time-off-jose-mourinho/

As a result of his elbow attack on West Ham’s Winston Reid in Sunday’s match, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could miss the derby against Manchester United next month if retrospective disciplinary action is taken against him. Television replays showed that the incident happened as he challenged the West Ham defender for a long clearance. To the annoyance of the West Ham fans and bench, He was however not punished by referee Andre Marriner. The FA however still ban Aguero for games including the Sept. 10 clash at Old Trafford if investigations are carried out into the incident. Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola claims not to have seen the incidence and so cannot comment on the issue. He said he hoped there will be no serious issue made out of the incidence and added that the team will deal with it if the need arose. The Football Association will await Marriner’s report before deciding whether to take action against Aguero. More Info @ http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/sergio-aguero-might-miss-manchester-derby/

29th August 2016 Nigeria’s situation is surely taking a turn for the worse all round these days. Imagine an international airport in darkness for hours! I still wonder how the Westerners inside the airport would have felt at such a moment considering the already “unstable” situation in the country. International airlines are finding it difficult to operate scheduled commercial flights from the international terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following a severe power outage which started late Saturday. The Lagos international airport gets its power supply both from the national grid and from its independent power plant. Daily Sun however learnt that both power sources had failed to work on Saturday and Sunday thus throwing up the entire airport into a state of darkness and disrupting the ability of airlines to make use of the requisite facilities that could enable them take off and land and also disembark passengers. Major airlines whose flight operations were disrupted on Saturday lastweek included KLM/Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa and South Africa Airways flights. “On Saturday these airlines had opted to use the ramp to board and disembark their passengers instead of using the fingers because of the absence of electricity to power the airport and it’s facilities,” a source told Daily Sun. “The power outage continued on yesterday as no effort was made to address the problem and airlines like Arik Air London flight ,Virgin Atlantic Airways, Air Maroc flights were also hampered and they also had to make use of the ramp,” added the source. Substitute Marcus Rashford scored an injury-time winner as Manchester United finally overhauled a stubborn Hull at a sodden KCOM Stadium. Parents protesting the failure of the Federal Government to rescue over 200 schoolgirls abducted by the Boko Haram sect in Chibok in 2014 have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately rescue the girls from captivity or resign. The parents, who joined the #BringBackOurGirls coalition on Thursday for another protest march to the Presidential Villa, were again stopped by armed policemen. A representative of the parents, Rev. Enoch Mark, accused the Federal Government of not doing enough to rescue the girls, saying the government should negotiate for their release. Mark, whose two daughters were among the 219 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, said he suffered a stroke while worrying about his daughters. He insisted that Buhari must negotiate with Boko Haram for the release of the schoolgirls. He said, “We cast our votes for Buhari because he promised to rescue our girls. Now, the parents are asking you, Mr. President, to meet the insurgents and make a decision. “Either use the military force or go for negotiation; some countries are ready to give you a helping hand. The African champions outshone their arch rivals, Angola to lift the Nations Cup for the first time last year which earned the country an automatic qualification to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The performance of teams at the just concluded Games also led to drastic changes on the ranking table. Others with noticeable jumps are Venezuela, Serbia and Brazil while Germany, Angola, Iran and Greece have had the biggest falls after failing to qualify for a second straight Olympics. Venezuela (115.4 points), the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship winners have risen to No. 15. Angola (66) and Iran (53.2) dropped eight places to No. 23 and No. 25, respectively, and Germany (31) fell nine places to No. 29. Nigeria, by this ranking, is now the highest ranked African team while Tunisia who were however, not at the Olympics also gained two steps to now occupy the 21st position from 23rd, ahead of Angola. Serbia (553), after winning two of their five games in Group A of the Olympics’ basketball event, have leapfrogged Lithuania and France into third place. They now trail No.1 USA (1000), who won a gold medal at the Olympics for a third straight time, and Spain (665), who finished third. The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, known for saying his mind very frankly on various national issues, has reviewed the economic policies of President Buhari and warned that the government was moving in the wrong direction. He said the Buhari administration was being run by “voodoo economists” who were running the Nigerian economy like unlicensed drivers behind the wheels of a brand new car so it would be idiotic to expect that such unqualified drivers would not crash the economy. Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), warned of an impending economic doom in the country if President Buhari continues with the current economic policies which he described as anti-investment and detrimental to national development. Sanusi spoke in Kano on Wednesday during a lecture he delivered at the second day of the 15th Joint Planning Board and the National Council on Development Planning organised by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, in collaboration with Kano State Government. His words: He said: “The first thing I would like to say is that there are many voodoo economists parading around and many of them are not economists, they are demagogues.’’ Sanusi, who delivered a lecture titled: “Nigeria – The Search for a New Growth Model”, declared that while the immediate past administration of Jonathan created “oil subsidy billionaires”, the Buhari government was churning out “forex billionaires.” He said: ‘’If this government continues to behave the way the last government behaved, we will end up where Jonathan ended. You may not like it, but that is the truth. Any system that allows you with one telephone call, you make N1 billion without investing one kobo, that system is wrong. It is unsustainable, no matter how you think about it positively. “We created billionaires from oil subsidies in the past. We are making the same mistake with forex subsidy,” he said in an apparent reference to the dual exchange rates in operation at the CBN. “As an Emir, I can sit in my garden and make phone calls to access $10 million at N197 per dollar and then sell it off at nothing less than N300,” he said. After taking an overview of the economic policies of the Federal Government, Sanusi concluded that nothing has really changed under the administration of President Buhari – while his government continues to blame the previous administration of Jonathan for its current woes. Sanusi lamenting that the incumbent administration had not learnt from the mistakes of those before it. Probe Obasanjo or forget your Hypocritical anti-corruption fight – Waku tells Buhari August 25, 2016. An elder of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Joseph Waku, on Tuesday, said the President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption fight will be seen to be effective if he probes former President, Olusegun Obasanjo. Waku, a former Senator from Benue State, said this while addressing reporters at the sideline of the ongoing Annual General Assembly of the Arewa Consultative Forum in Kaduna. Wondering why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had left Obasanjo untouched, Waku stressed that Nigerians would not take Buhari’s fight against corruption seriously if the likes of the former President went about freely. Kerry Warns Buhari Against Military Intervention in Niger Delta United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, yesterday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa met behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari, who pledged to refrain from using military force to quell Niger Delta militancy except he is “constrained” to do so. Buhari stressed that despite the negative impact on the economy caused by the militancy in the Niger Delta, which has also affected the positive intentions of international and local investors, his government was showing restraint not to use real force, “except when constrained to do so.” An Aso Rock statement issued after the meeting said Buhari however, assured his guest that the focus of his administration is on the diversification of the economy having learnt our lessons from years of over dependence on oil. The president also pledged that his anti-corruption crusade would be deepened and institutionalized to last beyond his administration. According to him, “we will insist on the standards we’re establishing. We are laying down administrative and financial instructions in the public service that must be obeyed. Any breach will no longer be acceptable.” “We will retrain our staff, so that they understand the new orientation. And those who run foul of these rules will be prosecuted, no matter who is involved. August 21, 2016 The Assistant Inspector-General of Police for the Zone II Command Headquarters in Lagos, Abdulmajid Ali, has ordered that the case files of the man who allegedly named his dog ‘Buhari’, be transferred to his desk without delay. Joe Chinakwe, 30, was arrested and confined to a police cell in Sango Otta, Ogun State, for three days last week after a neighbour complained that he named his dog ‘‘Buhari”. The neighbour, who police identified as Halilu Umar from Sokoto State, reportedly told the police that Mr. Chinakwe’s decision was aimed at spiting and ridiculing his father who also happened to be named ‘Alhaji Buhari.’ Police sources were quoted as saying that Mr. Chinakwe’s action was “very provocative” and capable of stocking ethno-religious tensions in the country, allegations Mr. Chinakwe reportedly denied. Mr. Chinakwe said he named his dog ‘Buhari’ out of personal affection he had for President Muhammadu Buhari. He was granted bail by the police, but in a bizarre twist, Mr. Chinakwe was again rearrested on Friday. Police said they rearrested Mr. Chinakwe ahead of his arraignment before a Magistrate’s Court on Monday as well as to guarantee his safety, having been allegedly threatened by neighbours. Mr. Oyeyemi said since Mr. Ali had expressed his interest in the case and wanted to broker a peace amongst the parties involved, Mr. Chinakwe might not be charged to court again on Monday. “The matter may likely not go to court again on Monday,” Mr. Oyeyemi said. HERE WE GO AGAIN! Dem Swear For Una? DREAM TEAM VI | Dalung Opens Can of Worms A can of worms is waiting to be opened by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, who alleged that there were some shady deals involving the Olympic team’s training programme in Atlanta, USA and the scandalous flight arrangement to Rio Brazil for the Summer Games. Also included is the country’s football team being stranded for several days at their training base in Atlanta, USA, before they finally made their way to the Olympics in Brazil. Dalung, also revealed that the 4,000 dollars allegedly paid by team captain, Mikel Obi at their hotel when the team was held hostage by the hotel management over unpaid bills, was part of blackmail by the Olympic team’s leadership against him. He claimed that he refunded the 4,000 dollars to Mikel to stem the bad press the issue was attracting. It is expected that after the Rio Olympics a high-powered probe will be initiated by the minister to uncover the truth behind the drama, which caused Nigeria international shame. The Nigeria team only flew into Brazil barely seven hours before their opening match against Japan. More @ http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/dream-team-vi-dalung-opens-can-of-worms/

The Nigerian presidency has ordered a discreet investigation of former president, Goodluck Jonathan, and his wife, Patience, over the spate of bombings of oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. A top government source, quoting intelligence reports, told this newspaper that it had now been established that some of the oil installations bombed in the Niger Delta had actually been mined while President Jonathan was in power, just before the 2015 election, by some of the militants and operatives known to be very close to him. “The mining was meant to be a “Plan B should they be removed from Aso Rock,” said the official, who requested not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the matter. “The plan then was to cause confusion if the 2015 presidential election did not go as expected, in favour of the then incumbent.” “However, when the former president surprisingly conceded the election to President Mohammadu Buhari, according to the source, there was both disappointment and confusion in the camp of those who had designed the plan, causing a suspension of the whole agenda. At least 13 people died Wednesday, a local official said, after they apparently drank toxic homemade liquor in India’s eastern Bihar — despite a state-wide ban on alcohol. At least 18 people were taken to hospital late Tuesday due to severe stomach ache and vomiting. “Thirteen people have died so far. Two more are critical and the rest have been discharged,” Rahul Kumar, magistrate of Gopalganj district, told AFP. Kumar said tests were underway to determine the exact cause of death, but they are suspected to have all died after drinking moonshine from illegal bootleggers. One of India’s poorest states, Bihar announced prohibition in April after chief minister Nitish Kumar promised at elections to crackdown on a widespread problem of alcohol abuse. Bihar is one of a string of states to have banned alcohol over the years. Hundreds of poor people who cannot afford branded liquor die every year in India from drinking cheap and toxic hooch. Last month, 33 people died in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh state after drinking toxic brew. Bootleggers often add methanol — a highly toxic form of alcohol sometimes used as an anti-freeze or fuel — to their home-brew liquor to increase the alcoholic content. If ingested, it can cause blindness and liver damage and can kill in larger concentrations. More than 100 people died in Mumbai last year after drinking illegal moonshine in a slum. Nearly three billion litres of legal liquor and an estimated two billion litres of hooch are consumed in India annually, according to the International Spirits and Wines Association. http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/13-die-from-suspected-toxic-liquor/

August 16, 2016 Nigeria’s top security chiefs met yesterday at the Presidential Villa and declared that the on-going military operations against the Boko Haram insurgents in the North East will continue. The meeting came a day after the Boko Haram terrorists released a video of some of the Chibok schoolgirls they kidnapped on April 14, 2014 in Borno State. The terrorists had in the video demanded freedom for their arrested members as a condition for releasing the over 200 girls abducted from the Government Girls Secondary School in Borno State. Briefing newsmen after the meeting, which was not attended by President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-Gen. Gabriel Olonishakin, said the parley also covered other security challenges outside terrorism. He said the military was still analysing the latest Boko Haram video before making appropriate comments. Olonishakin, who chaired the meeting, said that it was about “how we handle crises, all forms of crises – be it flood or terrorism. We are analysing the video released by Boko Haram and we will make appropriate comments at the right time.” He said whatever demands being made by the terrorists can only be decided on by politicians as the military was going ahead with its operations against the insurgents. “That is a political decision to be taken. The military decision is that we are going ahead with our operations. The operation is being conducted appropriately,” he stated. He also denied reports that one of the three persons declared wanted over the video, reported to army authorities in Maiduguri and was asked to go home and return the following day, stating that “nobody reported to my men and was turned back”.
