Paul Pogba is expected to be the future captain of Manchester United F.C. if insinuations by Club Manager Jose Mourinho is anything to go by.

The French forward, a world-record £89.3million signing, has overcome a slow start to the season to become a driving force in the Manchester United mid-field which has seen them climb up to the sixth position on the Premier League Table.

Manager Jose Mourinho said the 23-year-old has all the characteristics needed to become Manchester United’s captain one day.

“I think he has everything. He has the charisma, the ambition, the mentality and he’s a good professional, so I think he will be the captain in the future,” he said.

“Being so young and having all the ingredients, I think he can do it.”

Spanish Champions F.C. Real Madrid set a new La Liga record by playing 40 matches without losing a singleone with an exciting 3-3 draw against F.C. Sevilla on Thursday.

Sevilla were on the verge of stopping the record-breaking attempt as they led Ream Madrid by 3-1 with seven minutes left in the game. They were however undone with a last minute goal scored by the ever reliable Karim Benzema to pull Real Madrid level in a highly pulsating game.

The last-minute strike by Karim Benzema extended Madrid’s undefeated streak and surpassed bitter rivals Barcelona’s run of 39 games without defeat under Luis Enrique last season.

The European champions progress to the quarter-finals of the competition 6-3 on aggregate after winning the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu 3-0 last week.

Madrid’s quest to break Barca’s record in all competitions appeared to be over when Vicente Iborra gave Sevilla a two-goal cushion on the night with 13 minutes remaining.

F.C. Barcelona’s forward Luis Suarez scored his 100th goal for the team when he put the holders ahead on the night in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey showdown with Athletic Bilbao.

Mercurial Striker Lionel Messi had released the other member of the famous MSN – Neymar Jnr., to send in a floated cross from the left and Luis Suarez was on hand to crash home a superb volley that sent the home fans into wild jubilations.

That goal brought the Uruguay striker to three figures for the LaLiga champions in all competitions, a land mark he has stormed to in only 120 appearances, and it was somewhat fitting that he combined with his forward colleagues to do just that.

Barcelona’s celebrated MSN front three have now scored 300 goals since they started playing together in 2014 with Messi leading the way with 124, while Neymar has contributed 76.

The strike against Bilbao, which pulled Barcelona level at 2-2 on aggregate in the last-16 tie, was Luis Suarez’s eighth goal in 12 Copa del Rey outings.

Suarez has 68 goals in 78 LaLiga matches, with 17 in 24 for Barca in the Champions League.

The rest of his haul comes from a goal apiece in the Supercopa de Espana and UEFA Super Cup and five across a pair of appearances when Luis Enrique’s men won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2015.

F.C. Barcelona had to once again rely on their superstar Lionel Messi to pull them out of the woods with his free-kick wonders as they at last dismissed Athletic Bilbao 3-1 to get a 4-3 aggregate triumph in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.

Coming back from a 2-1 loss in Bilbao last week, Barca had to wait for their breakthrough before it arrived in a landmark fashion ten minutes from half-time.

Luis Suarez volleyed his 100th goal for the club on the end of a move that fittingly featured Messi and Neymar – it was the 300th goal for MSN since the awesome forward trio began playing together in 2014.

Neymar won and converted a penalty early in the second period, but Athletic hit back through wideman Enric Saborit, a Barcelona-born product of the Espanyol youth system.

But Barcelona, looking for a win at their third attempt in 2017, were not discouraged and a familiar hero stepped forward.

Having arrowed a set-piece into the top left corner to snatch a 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Sunday, Messi deftly whipped an effort from similar range across the Bilbao wall and in off the right-hand post to stylishly book a quarter-final spot.

Seriki was attacked on Glover Street, Ebute Meta area of Lagos and his blue Lexus 330 was snatched by the robbers.

Manchester United defeated Hull City 2-0 in thefirst leg of their EFL Cup semi-final last night at the Old Trafford Stadium. However, Wayne Rooney could not make his dream of becoming the club’s all-time top scorer come true.

Manchester United dominated the whole of the first half with no reward, as they were thwarted by a diligent and well-organised Hull F.C.

Juan Mata went closest during the opening period for United and, as he did in the fourth round against Manchester City, the Spain playmaker put smiles on the faces of the Old Trafford faithfuls by scoring the opening goal just after half-time.

Wayne Rooney who had pulled level with Bobby Charlton on 249 United goals during Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup triumph over Reading found himself shooting agonisingly wide five minutes before Mata’s 56th-minute breakthrough.

The England captain was taken off shortly afterwards, and he watched substitute Marouane Fellaini add a late second in the knowledge his next tilt at the record should arrive when United host bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Tournament will be contested by 48 teams as the World Soccer Governing Body has unanimously agreed to expand the current format.

The new format, which will see the finals comprising 16 groups of three teams before a 32-team knockout stage, was voted for unanimously by the FIFA Council at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.

President Gianni Infantino had laid out plans for such an expansion as part of his campaign for the top job at world football’s governing body last year.

The 37 Council members were asked to select their favourite from five proposals: two involving a 48-team set-up, two 40-team tournaments, and the current 32-team format.

Cristiano Ronaldo beat Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to win the inaugural The Best FIFA Men’s Player award for 2016.

The Real Madrid and Portugal forwardhad been shortlisted with the other two at the head of a selection of some 23 global best footballers for the new FIFA Award.

Ronaldo was however expectedly announced as the winner at Monday’s ceremony in Zurich.

The triumph adds to the Ballon d’Or crown the 31-year-old picked up last month, which was the fourth of his career.

“Wow, wow, wow – it is incredible,” Ronaldo said after being presented with the award by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Lionel Messi once again came to F.C. Barcelona’s rescue with a late free-kick to earn his team a valuable point against a Villarreal team that was bent on winning this particular game and were so close to achieving their goal.

F.C. Barcelona as usual dominated play in the opening minutes with possessional football but somehow could not translate that into goals as the first half somehow ended goalless.

However, four minutes into the second half, F.C. Villarreal showed how much they meant business as they went ahead through a goal from Nicola Sansone after a well organised counter attack.

A trio of penalty appeals – two for Barca and one for Villarreal – were ignored before a free-kick on the edge of the box opened the door for Messi to snatch a share of the spoils.

And the Argentina international, who had earlier hit the post, wrong-footed goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo as he fired into the top left-hand corner.

Villarreal’s Jaume Costa was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card as their hopes of entering the Champions League qualification spots were scuppered.

Chelsea F.C. this evening easily eased past Peterborough United by four goals to one in the FA Cup third round even when they had to play part of the second half with ten men as John Terry got sent off with a red card.

The goals came from the boots of Pedro who scored twice, Michy Batshuayi with another and Willian rounding it up with one of his own

Antonio Conte rotated his squad for his first taste of FA Cup action, with captain Terry restored to the starting line-up, Kurt Zouma making his first senior start in 11 months and Batshuayi deputising for Diego Costa.

Chelsea went in front after 17 minutes of Sunday’s tie at Stamford Bridge despite the changes, though, with Pedro thumping home after Luke McGee had saved Nathaniel Chalobah’s powerful drive.

The Spaniard inexplicably hit the crossbar from close range, but Batshuayi did double the lead with a powerful strike following a clinical break for his fourth Chelsea goal.

Willian made it 3-0 early in the second half, before captain Terry – making his first Blues start since October – was shown a straight red card for foul on Lee Angol.

Tom Nichols provided League One Peterborough with the briefest hope of a comeback, only for Pedro to coolly score his second and Chelsea’s fourth to round off a comfortable afternoon for the Premier League leaders, who returned to winning ways following their 2-0 loss at Tottenham last time out.

Chelsea consequently extend their run of not being eliminated from the third-round stage since the 1997-98 season, while Peterborough have not beaten a top-flight side since 1965.

The Blues survived an early scare when Asmir Begovic smothered Angol’s poor effort from Marcus Maddison’s right-wing cross.

However, Chelsea were soon causing problems at corners as Gary Cahill and Terry – making his 50th FA Cup start – forced saves from McGee.

McGee could do nothing about Chelsea’s first goal, though. Chalobah’s long-range strike was parried into the path of Pedro, who rifled the follow-up into the top-right corner after cleverly selling the defender a dummy.

Batshuayi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were both denied by McGee, before Pedro somehow struck the crossbar from six yards.


But Chelsea were 2-0 up shortly before half-time. Loftus-Cheek laid Branislav Ivanovic’s cross into Batshuayi’s path and the Belgium striker angled his shot powerfully past McGee.

When policemen were said to have been deployed in Bamaina community, Birnin Kudu local government council of Jigawa State, to ostensibly forestall a festive rally put together by some youth in the state, it was mainly to ensure that the former governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, does not continue his usual visibility as political leader in the state.

Although the rally was meant to restate calls on Lamido to make up his mind about the 2019 presidential election, the action of the security personnel was a continuation of what has been going on quietly in parts of the country.

While he warned leaders to “beware of the consequences that flow from tyranny, impunity and abuse of human dignity,” Lamido pointed out that if the acts of intimidation was because of his ambition, if he has been destined to be president, “they cannot stop or deter me.”


The Jigawa clash represented the major outcropping of ongoing political alignments by career politicians in the north “to arrest the uncoordinated, purposeless and mediocre leadership that has been foisted on the north.”

Against that backdrop is also the growing general perception in the northern part of the country that the 2019 general election would be decided by “focused and development-oriented politicians.” As such, those politicians, including former governors and federal legislators have been mobilising in such a way that should President Muhammadu Buhari decide to seek another term in office, he will run the risk of being a lone ranger.

F.C. Real Madrid took time to honour their football idol Cristiano Ronaldo just before their darling team took on Granada in Saturday’ La Liga game at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. He was honoured for his fourth Ballon d’Or triumph which he claimed recently.

Ronaldo scooped the most coveted individual gong in world football last month on the back of Madrid’s march to Champions League glory and Portugal’s Euro 2016 triumph.

Supporters held up sheets of gold paper as the teams entered the field on Saturday, with Ronaldo’s four Ballon d’Or trophies laid out on a table.

Ronaldo took his place beside them for a short ceremony, where he was greeted by previous winners and ex-Madrid stars Raymond Kopa, Michael Owen, Luis Figo and former Brazil striker Ronaldo.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was also among their number – the French World Cup winner claimed the Ballon d’Or in 1998 – and Kaka and Fabio Cannavaro sent their congratulations via video messages on the stadium screens.

A smiling Ronaldo then posed for photographs before Madrid kicked off in a bid to extend their club-record unbeaten run to 39 matches, a feat that would pull them level with Barcelona’s all-time best mark for a Spanish side.

Mikel Obi’s aide has defended the Chelsea star’s transfer to Chinese football club Tianjin Teda, saying it was the precise time for the Nigeria skipper to go for the money after he has received all the things at his London club – F.C. Chelsea.

Mikel Obi has signed a three-year contract with Tianjin Teda, which is able to reportedly pay him 140,000 pounds every week, twice what he used to be paid at Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona must come from behind in the Copa del Rey as the holders began 2017 with a tempestuous 2-1 defeat to nine-man Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Evergreen striker Aritz Aduriz headed Athletic in front and set up a thunderous second from winger Inaki Williams before the half-hour mark.

But the Spain striker found himself at the centre of a flashpoint that sent a crackling San Mames towards boiling point when he struck Samuel Umtiti in the throat only to escape punishment, as the Barcelona centre-back writhed in pain by his own goalmouth.

Referee Fernandez Borbalan further endeared himself to away boss Luis Enrique, with one of the surest penalty shouts of Neymar’s career falling on deaf ears before Barca’s players departed for half-time amid a hail of bookings for dissent.

Real Madrid celebrated the first anniversary of Zinedine Zidane’s appointment in style, as James Rodriguez netted twice in a 3-0 Copa del Rey dismantling of Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Zidane has enjoyed a wonderful 12 months in charge of the European champions and his impact showed no sign of subsiding on Wednesday, with Sevilla on the end of a battering in what was predicted to be a tough Copa last-16 first leg for injury-ravaged Madrid.

The rested Cristiano Ronaldo along with the injured Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos were just three of those missing, but their absence was not felt as Madrid ran Sevilla ragged right from the beginning – James breaking the deadlock early on with a fine goal which encapsulated the hosts’ quick start.

The match settled down but Zidane’s men remained in complete control and added a second through Raphael Varane, before James’ doubled his tally by converting a dubious penalty.

Madrid appeared to ease off slightly in the second half, though Sevilla looked no more threatening as the home side kept things tight and disciplined at the back.

In the end, Madrid had no difficulty cruising to victory and taking their unbeaten run to 38 matches in all competitions, but Sevilla will not have to wait long for revenge as the two sides go head-to-head in the second leg and in LaLiga over the next 11 days.

Founder of Glorious Word Ministry International, Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah, has predicted the death of President Muhammadu Buhari.

This is coming at a time when several clergymen across Nigeria have predicted Buhari’s death between this year and 2019.


Buhari’s death was one of the 17 2017 prophecies released by the Ghanian based prophet.

In a message titled “Pray to avert them” Bempah also predicted the deaths of a former President, a former first lady as well as a ‘great king’ in Ghana.

The clergyman also prophesied clash between Christians and Muslims, a terrorist attack in the country and a coup d’etat.

allegedly released to him by Governor
Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar as lawmakers’ New Year ‘gift.’
Besudesm Garba was also removed over his high handedness, rigidity and refusal to carry along along his colleagues in activities of the House.
And so, yesterday, out of 30 members 25 signed his impeachment notice. Eventually, 23 members removed him at a plenary where he was absent.
His deputy, Ahmed Garba, presided at the session where he was impeached. There was no dissenting voice.
Garba, from Jahun local government, emerged speaker in 2015, in a chamber populated mostly by newcomers.
His colleagues also accused him of arrogating “to himself too much power, which necessitated us in losing confidence in him.”
The last straw for Garba, they claimed, was the alleged case of a missing N6 million from the N12 million released to members by the governor as their New Year gift.
An assembly source told Daily Sun members were not happy with the situation and demanded for an explanation from him. He reportedly ignored their request.
In a related development, some politicians in the state also criticised the assembly for sponsoring 11 members including Garba, to Mauritius, on a non-specified reason while 18 members went to Saudi Arabia, on pilgrimage.
A civil servant, who works in the assembly but, who declined to be named said, “it was glaring that when our people are barely able to feed themselves, some few members are only concerned about how to make frivolous travels with taxpayers money.”

The operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command yesterday said it has arrested four members of the gang that had been terrorizing and raping girls and women around Charity area of Oshodi of the state.

Our correspondent learnt that the suspects were arrested by the operatives during a raid on their criminal hideout in the axis.

According to the police, the twenty seven years old Sunday John who is the leader of the gang in his confessional statement said members of his gang had in the past raped nine women at the bus stop .

The police listed other members of the gang are: Saviour Daniel (23), Daniel Olayemi (18) and Abdulwahab Yusuph (17).

The operatives said it had had last Tuesday’s evening arrested one of John’s colleagues, Daniel Owoyemi, while fighting with another group of boys over a Samsung tablet in Oshodi.

“The suspect, Daniel Olayemi, had confessed to interrogators that he stole the tablet from a lady that was gang raped during one of their escapades in Charity Bus stop.

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, may have finally been removed from office.

A source close to The Guardian said his redeployment back to Nigerian Police Force (NPF) was to pave way for a fresh person to be presented by President Muhammadu Buhari as the nominee to head the anti-graft agency before the Senate.

Just few days after President Muhammadu Buhari claimed that Boko Haram had been effectively defeated, the terrorists early friday attacked a military facility in Rann, in northern part of Borno State, injuring several soldiers in the process.

A military source who confirmed the attack said that 15 members of the terrorists were killed, while some soldiers were injured in the attack.

According to the source, the attack happened around 6am and lasted for about three hours.

The source said: “Boko Haram insurgents launched heavy attack on soldiers stationed in Rann. Though it was a surprise attack, the military successfully repelled it.”

He said it was during the push back that 15 insurgents were killed and some soldiers wounded.

72 year old, Idris Ajao, has been arrested by the Osun State police command for being in possession of a female human skull. Ajao who claims to be bricklayer, was arrested today while transporting the human part to Iwo.

When interrogated, he said a herbalist by the name Tajudeen Jawesola, had asked him to exhume skulls from graves in a cemetery in return for N10,000.

He was caught while exhuming one of the corpse buried in the cemetery. He blamed his act on the devil, saying it was a “big mistake”

“It was Jawesola that asked me to get the human skull for him. Everybody knows Jawesola to be a herbalist and he wanted to use the human skull to do his work. He said he would give me N10, 000. I should not have listened to him. It is a mistake”he said.
