Nairaland / General / Turkish Referee Cheated Nigeria In Match Against Argentina - Mikel Obi. by uneeking(m): 4:57am On Jun 28, 2018
The football match between Argentina and Nigeria in Group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Competition holding in Russia has come and gone but the controversy surrounding that game still remains like a sour taste in the mouth.

It will be recalled that the Turkish referee for that match inexplicably denied Nigeria a very clear penalty after an Argentinian defender had headed the ball on to his  hand right in his own box. The Nigerian players demanded a review of that scene on the VAR which the referee eventually agreed to.

However to the dismay of the Nigerian players and virtually everyone in the stadium and those watching on television sets across the world, the referee stood his ground and refused to award the clear penalty. Argentina of course went on to win that match 2-1.

The captain of the Super Eagles, Mikel Obi was later on asked in an interview about that particular incident and the following is what he had to say;

“We’ve seen it again in the dressing room, it was a clear penalty. There wasn’t any way the referee could not give that.

“The referee looked at the VAR. He said it hit the hand. I asked why he did not give us a  penalty, he said he did not  know.”

“We did everything we could."

“In the second half we pushed and pushed. It just wasn’t to be. It is  a young team and in four years most of them will be ready for this tournament.

“I’m very proud of the boys and what we have achieved. I think we have done really well. We have to keep going.”

Like Mikel, many soccer lovers across the globe are of the opinion that the Super Eagles were robbed in that game. Some of them are of the opinion that it would have been the other way round if the penalty had been in favour of Argentina.

In this kind of a situation, Football is surely the loser.

Nairaland / General / Dangerous Super Eagles Vs Desperate Argentinian National Football Team. by uneeking(m): 10:53am On Jun 26, 2018
Today is the D day in Group D of the 2018 World Cup Competition in Russia as perennial rivals - Nigeria and Argentina square off against one another in a game to decide who qualifies for the next round of the competition.

As is to be expected in such a setting, a lot of people have been talking about this game as well as making some permutations as to how the match will turn out.

One of such people is the former Nigerian International, Mutiu Adepoju. Below are excerpts form an interview he granted a Media House recently.

"I expect a very good and exciting match, even more than what we saw against Iceland the other day. I expect to see two teams with two contrasting fortunes.

A Nigerian side brimming with confidence after the 2-0 win over Iceland and an Argentina that’s bristling with hurt and anger after getting just one point from two games.

Argentina are a wounded lion seeking for revenge. They will be desperate to get all three points and, honestly, they have the players to do it. They will want to come out all guns blazing hoping to catch the Super Eagles.

And, I think, this is where Nigeria can be dangerous. We are also desperate. We want to win and progress to the next round. If Argentina thinks they are hurt, the Eagles also want to make Nigerians happy so they have their backs to the wall. And the whole world knows how dangerous Nigeria can be when our backs are to the wall. We can be very dangerous.

If I’m Rohr, they say you don’t change a winning team so I will allow the team that played the last game to start although I would want Tyronne Ebuehi to be in the starting line-up. I want the same personnel we used in midfield. We need to mop up spaces in the middle so that Lionel Messi is starved of the ball.

Nairaland / General / Re: President Buhari Blames "Desperate Politicians" For Recent Killings In Plateau. by uneeking(m): 8:44pm On Jun 25, 2018
When will the "talking" be replaced with "decisive" actions?
Nairaland / General / President Buhari Blames "Desperate Politicians" For Recent Killings In Plateau. by uneeking(m): 8:20pm On Jun 25, 2018
Over the weekend, a number of attacks were recorded in Plateau State resulting in the death of close to a hundred people in various parts of Plateau State and leading to the proclamation of a dusk to dawn curfew in about three local government areas of the state by the Governor Lalong led administration.

In a reaction to this situation, the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has come out to declare that the clashes were the handiwork of "desperate politicians" in the state.

Speaking in a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, the president said that these politicians have increasingly cheapened human life in their quest to establish a reign of instability and chaos in the country for political gains.

He went on to say:

“We know that a number of geographical and economic factors are contributing to the longstanding herdsmen/farmers clashes.

“But we also know that politicians are taking advantage of the situation. This is incredibly unfortunate.

“Nigerians affected by the herdsmen/ farmer clashes must always allow the due process of the law to take its course rather than taking matters into their own hands.’’

How such statements in place of decisive actions will bring an end to these clashes however remains to be seen as innocent people across the country continue to die unnecessarily in the seemingly unending saga.

Nairaland / General / Nigerians And Soccer Mathematics. by uneeking(m): 9:07am On Jun 23, 2018
The Super Eagles of Nigeria yesterday made millions of Nigerians and their foreign supporters very happy by defeating Iceland by two goals to nil. Some people may not know how much such a victory means to Nigerians until they realize the fact that the Super Eagles matches are THE ONLY THING that truly unites the citizens of this country in these difficult times.

One does not need to consult a Prophet or an oracle to know that operators of Beer parlour Joints and other Relaxation Outlets must have made profits beyond their expectations last night. Unfortunately, that also means that the amount of money usually collected in various churches across the country will suffer some decrease today due to reasons ranging from a reduction in the number of worshipers to the sudden reduction in "Pocket Power" after yesterday's "generosity" at the Beer Parlours.

Now to the original business of this post.

Yesterday's win for Nigeria has once again renewed the possibility of the country's qualification for the next round of the competition. I can bet you that most Nigerian soccer lovers will today be guilty of the offence of "Overuse of Calculators".

The average Nigerian today will be carrying out calculations as to how the Super Eagles can qualify for the next round of the 2018 World Cup Competition holding in Russia.

These calculations this time around will take the following shape.

Nigeria will qualify if;

(1) The Super Eagles are able to hold Argentina to a draw in their last group match.

(2) Who says the Super Eagles cannot defeat Argentina? Even if it is by half a goal or an offside goal?

(3) If Croatia helps us by avoiding defeat against Iceland and we play a draw against Argentina.

(4) But wait o! What of if Iceland defeats Croatia by three goals to nothing while we end up playing a draw with Argentina? Can we lodge a protest against Croatia for "selling" their match to Iceland?

(5) What of the option of injuring Lionel Messi early in the game so that it can become easier for us to defeat Argentina or at least get a draw against them?

(6) What of if Brazil beat Croatia as we defeat Argentina? Ehmm, sorry, I forgot that Brazil is not in our group.

(7) Wait O! What of if we decide to pretend that Moses is injured and fly in Junior Okosa of Kano Pillars so as to improve our chances of scoring goals against Argentina?

And so on and so on.

Friends, I tell you for sure. In the next few days before the Super Eagles play against Argentina, many calculators will go to their "early graves" in the hands of Nigerian Soccer Lovers.

Let us already pray for the repose of their dear souls.

That is a real President talking. Not like some other ones especially from Africa that we know. Left to them the country can remain border-less and its people can get attacked on a daily basis. That does not bother them as long as they are able to hold on to power till death do them part.

May God come to the rescue of our Dear Africa.

Nairaland / General / Croatia Defeats Nigeria 2-0. Nigerians React (video Comedy). by uneeking(m): 12:11pm On Jun 18, 2018
The fact that Croatia defeated Nigeria by two goals to nothing is not news anymore. Nigerians have somehow gotten over that debacle as is usual with the people. This is only one of the numerous disappointments that they face on a daily basis and have somewhat gotten used to such scenarios. They are no longer new to them.

However, since the this last one concerns soccer which is like food for the people of Nigeria, it was not very easy to swallow that particular bitter pill. Nigerians actually vented their anger on the game in various ways. We bring to you in this post, one of the ways they did just that in a video format. Catch some fun watching this video.

Nairaland / General / Super Eagles Vs Croatia Today At The 2018 FIFA World Cup Competition In Russia. by uneeking(m): 8:58am On Jun 16, 2018
As the Nigerian Super Eagles prepare to take on Croatia this evening at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Competition in their opening Group D fixture in Kalinigrad, Russia, Nigerians as usual, have been making a lot of permutations as far as what the result is likely to be especially with the recent performances of the team in friendly matches.

However, there is another angle to all the permutations as the people keep wondering what the likely starting line-up will be as well as what formation will be deployed by the team’s coach. It is believed that these factors will determine how well the Super Eagles will perform against Croatia today.

If the rumour mills are to be trusted, then the team will have 19-year-old Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper Francis Uzoho in goal. The right full-back position will have either Shehu Abdulahi or Tyronne Ebuehi in place. None of the players mentioned above have played in the World Cup before.

Yet another World Cup debutant in person of Byran Idowu might just be picked ahead of Elderson Echiejile in the left full-back position due to form. The Amkar Perm defender has featured in all Nigeria’s pre-World Cup friendlies but has never played in the tournament proper.

The injury doubts over Leon Balogun could see Rohr decide to play a 3-5-2 formation with John Ogu made to play on the left of a back three on his debut appearance for Nigeria at the World Cup alongside another debutant William Troost-Ekong in defence.

John Ogu has played in the position in his last two games for Nigeria. He has also been playing as a centre-back in training.

At the midfield end, fit-again Wilfred Ndidi is set to make his first World Cup appearance alongside captain Mikel Obi while in attack Changchun Yatai striker Odion Ighalo and Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi are also expected to make their first Mundial appearances.

All in all, the Super Eagles will likely be fielding about eight players who have never played at the World Cup before now. Whether that turns out to be an advantage or dis-advantage is to be seen later this evening as the team plays its first match in this year’s competition.

One thing that is for sure however, is the fact that the result of this match will go a long way in determining whether the Super Eagles of Nigeria will qualify for the next round of this competition.

Nairaland / General / Mohamed Salah Off To F.C. Barcelona? Alleged Secret Meetings. by uneeking(m): 1:44pm On Jun 07, 2018
Mohamed Salah is definitely the hottest player in the soccer market right now as many top teams are said to be after him right now after his top level performances for F.C. Liverpool in his very first year at the club.

The most recent rumor about him has it that the player’s representatives have been in contact with F.C. Barcelona officials over a possible transfer of the mercurial striker to the Nou Camp.

According to a Spanish publication AS, the Egyptian’s representatives have recently approached the F.C. Barcelona officials with regards to their client’s future plans.

It will be recalled that Mohamed Salah, only recently returned to the English Premier League after an earlier stint with Chelsea and was named the best player in the Premier League last season as well as winning the Golden Boot with his 32 goals.

Reports have it that there have been some secret meetings between the Blaugrana and the forward’s agents over the past week, and the objective has been to see if a possible move to the Camp Nou could happen.

However, it is also expected that the F.C. Liverpool will request more than €100 million (R1.5 billion) from the Spanish club should they want to land the African forward, which would likely be a stumbling block to any such deal.

F.C. Liverpool have reportedly got a suitable replacement in mind, in Lyon’s Nabil Fekir, should the Egypt international decide to leave the Merseyside.

In the meantime, Mohamed Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, has since denied the Spanish media house’s claims, stating that the story is false. Who is right and who is wrong in this matter? Time shall tell, of course.

Nairaland / General / Egyptian Lawyer Sues Real Madrid Captain Sergio Ramos For Injuring Mohamed Salah by uneeking(m): 10:30am On May 29, 2018
If you thought that the hullabaloo surrounding the way and manner that the 2018 Champions’ League Final Game was played and won is over, you surely are wrong as not only F.C. Liverpool fans are unhappy with issues surrounding the match but also Egyptians who are now worried that Mohamed Sallah may not be fully fit to play for their national team in the 2018 World Cup Competition starting in Russia in only a few days’ time.

This is because of the injury Sallah copped after being brought down in that match by Real Madrid’s captain, Sergio Ramos.

As a matter of fact, the issue has taken a legal dimension as an Egyptian lawyer has filed a €1 billion lawsuit against Sergio Ramos for the injury which he inflicted on Mohamed Salah in that final match.

The Egyptian forward left the pitch in tears with a suspected ligament damage of his shoulder, which ended Liverpool’s early dominance in Kiev as Real Madrid went on to win the game 3-1.

There were fears that Mohamed Salah was ruled out of the World Cup because of that injury – Jurgen Klopp said post-match that it was likely he will miss the tournament – but the player is now “confident” of taking part.

An Egyptian lawyer, Bassem Wahba is keen to press ahead with the lawsuit, confirming his intention on Egyptian television.

“Ramos intentionally injured Mo Salah and should be punished about his actions,” he claimed on the Sada El-Balad channel.

“I’ve filed a lawsuit and a complaint to Fifa.

“I’ll ask for compensation, which could exceed €1 billion (£873 million), for the physical and psychological harm that Ramos gave Salah and the Egyptian people”, he further said.

Nairaland / General / Gernot Rohr Speaks On Composition Of Super Eagles Squad For 2018 World Cup. by uneeking(m): 12:12pm On May 26, 2018
If you have been wondering how the composition of the provisional 30-man Super Eagles Squad for the 2018 World Cup Competition came about, you are at the right place right now. That is because the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Gernot Rohr has been giving some insights into that particular issue.

This is what the coach had to say on the issue; “The list was not of my own making alone. I have backroom staff, including the medical team and I gathered all of them in my house. We looked at the players one by one and asked what qualities they have, and how they will complement the other players,”.

He went on to say; “Of course I looked first at the players who were with us for the qualifiers but then I also looked at other players who have done well for their clubs. That’s why you see players like Junior Lokosa who is doing very well in the Nigerian league and Simy Nwakwo who had an excellent season in Italy.”

The coach then spoke on the issue concerning the reason why Nwakali was not included in the squad especially after he put up a five-star performance against Atletico Madrid in last Tuesday’s friendly international.

Rohr had this to say on the issue: “Nwakali is a good player. I knew him before now and he was in my list of 35 players. We had a team of 50 players which we pruned down to 35 and then 30. By the time he played against Atletico, we had already submitted the 30-man list on May 14 and the game against Atletico was on May 22 so it was too late to include him. He’s in my plans and definitely he will be invited after the World Cup.”

Gernot Rorh then hinted that new invitees Lokosa and Nwakwo will get the chance to prove their mettle in Monday’s friendly international against Congo DR in Port Harcourt.

“We will see them on Monday and hopefully they will make a case for their inclusion with their performance against Congo DR and even if they don’t get to be selected, they would have learnt valuable lessons from training with the team. But I have been impressed so far with their performances,” he said.

Nairaland / General / Lionel Messi Speaks On Neymar’s Possible Move To Real Madrid. by uneeking(m): 5:58am On May 16, 2018
With rumours rife about a possible Neymar Jnr. move from PSG to Real Madrid in the near future, F.C. Barcelona striker and Argentina’s National Team Captain, Lionel Messi has come out to say “It surely will be terrible to see Neymar Jnr. play for Real Madrid”.

It would be remembered that both players were team mates just a few months back before Neymar left Barca for Paris Saint-Germain last summer in a world-record € 222million deal.

Rumours however have it that the Brazilian is unhappy with the standard of the French League and is planning return to Spain, to play for Real Madrid F.C..

“It would be terrible to see Neymar at Real Madrid. He meant a lot to us. It’ll be a big blow to the fans,” Messi reportedly told TYC Sports.

Neymar formed a lethal attacking partnership with Messi and Luis Suarez at the Nou Camp.

The three players were known for their bond on and off the pitch and Messi says he still shares a strong friendship with Suarez.

“I have a strong friendship with Suarez. On the pitch, he makes life easier. His movement is great, he runs, he presses. Sometimes he runs one way but then goes another way. It makes it easier for me to play my game as well,” he said.

On his own future at the club, Messi added: “I don’t have to move to another team to prove anything to anyone. It’s very difficult for me to leave F.C. Barcelona.”

Nairaland / General / Modern Day Nigeria Accurately Defined. by uneeking(m): 10:21am On May 13, 2018
I had always been afraid of facing a particular question whenever I had to write examinations or attend any interview. That question "Give us a brief description of Nigeria from your own perspective of the country". I am sure I am not alone in the fear of answering such a "tempting" question. I however ran a very apt answer to that particular question as answered by a good friend of mine and am very happy to reproduce it right here below.

Dakota Native American tribal wisdom, passed on from generation to generation, says:

"When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount and get a different horse."

However, in some governments and corporate organizations, more advanced strategies are often employed, such as:

1. Buying a stronger whip.

2. Changing the riders.

3. Appointing a committee to study the horse.

4. Arranging to visit other countries to see how other cultures ride dead horses.

5. Lowering the standards so that the dead horse can be included.

6. Reclassifying the dead horse as 'living impaired'.

7. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.

8. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed.

9. Providing additional funding and / or training to increase dead horse's performance.

Nairaland / General / Huddersfield F.C. Messes Up Chelsea At The Bridge. by uneeking(m): 5:07am On May 10, 2018
Chelsea F.C. had their hopes of qualifying for the next edition of the European Champions’ League seriously dented by an equally desperate Huddersfield Town who ensured that the Londoners had a night to forget as they played out a 1:1 draw in their fixture.

The visitors actually almost got away with a victory but for Marco Alonso who saved the blushes of the home team by scoring the equalizer late on.

Huddersfield Town has surely through this result secured their Premier League survival as they put up a very solid performance against their more respected opponents.

Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification needed them to record a fifth straight league victory, but their chances of finishing in the top four now appear slim after Huddersfield Town hung on late to ensure their top-flight status.

Willy Caballero deputised for the injured Thibaut Courtois and his mistake in the 50th minute gave the visitors a shock lead at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Aaron Mooy’s long pass sent Laurent Depoitre racing through on goal, the striker getting to the ball ahead of the sluggish Caballero and regaining his composure to slot into the open goal.

Alonso levelled in fortuitous fashion when Mathias Jorgensen cleared a cross onto the defender’s head, with the ball rebounding in for his seventh Premier League goal of the season – and by far the Spaniard’s strangest.

Chelsea – who somehow did not score in a late goalmouth scramble – must now hope Liverpool slip up in their final-day meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

David Wagner and his team can start planning ahead for the 2018-19 campaign, with Swansea now needing a win against Stoke City at the weekend and a 10-goal swing in goal difference to overhaul Southampton.

Nairaland / General / 15-year-old Housewife Kills Her Daughter. by uneeking(m): 4:10am On May 09, 2018
Yes, you read that right! A 15-Year-Old “Housewife”!

That is how far the society has degenerated over the years especially in the Northern Nigerian region. I do not know how a child is expected to perform the role of a mother without such disastrous consequences.

However before I digress from the story, here is what transpired,

A 15-year-old housewife, Fatima Adamu and her ex-lover, Usman Mohammed, of Egbati village in the Agaie Local Government Area of the state have been arrested by the Police in Niger State for the murder of her daughter simply identified as Hauwa.

The duo conspired to kill the innocent child by preparing a concoction which they then fed to her and which as they planned, resulted in the death of the five-year-old kid.

Investigations showed that after allegedly killing Hauwa, the heartless couple dumped the girl’s corpse in a nearby bush. It was also gathered that some of her body parts were missing as at the time the corpse was discovered.

The suspect confessed to committing the crime in an interview on Tuesday stating that she poisoned the minor with the cooperation of her ex-boyfriend who prepared the concoction that was administered on the little kid.

“I purposely killed my step-daughter because I didn’t like her, she irritated me a lot; I planned with Mohammed to poison her to death,” she confessed.

The suspect added, “I just woke up one morning to take her life and I cannot tell what had come over me to kill an innocent child that had not offended me in any way. May Allah forgive me; it is the worst offence against humanity. “

Her lover, Mohammed also admitted participating in the killing of the girl, saying ‘I have ruined my life.’

Mohammed said, “I prepared the poison which I gave to Adamu to kill the girl. I regret my action.”

The Niger State police spokesman, Muhammad Abubakar, said the suspects confessed to the crime during police interrogation.

He then said the couple would be arraigned in court after investigation.
