A legal practitioner, Mr. Wahab Shittu, in this interview with TOBI AWORINDE, argues that former President Olusegun Obasanjo should be investigated for allegations of bribery levelled against him while trying to push his third-term agenda through at the N’Assembly Do you think the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission should investigate the third-term bribery allegations against former President Olusegun Obasanjo? I want to preface my comments by emphasising the need for us to maintain an open mind and to also recognise the presumption of innocence on the part of those who are to be investigated, particularly on the part of former President Obasanjo. The rationale is that he remains an elder statesman, a national and iconic figure who has made some significant contributions to nation-building and who was also very instrumental to the quelling of the Civil War. He has consistently been praised for his crusade for unity and cohesiveness in the country. Although he remains controversial, he is perceived as a cat with nine lives. But that does not mean he is above the law. So, my take would be yes, the EFCC should reopen investigations into that allegations. But they should not be limited to the third-term allegation alone. It should cover other bribery allegations against that administration and subsequent administrations. For instance, it should cover the murders and other alleged atrocities of the Obasanjo era, including alleged atrocities of the (Goodluck) Jonathan years, like the allegations raised by (former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido) Sanusi on the money that was not remitted to the Federation Account, the Halliburton scandal, the Siemens scandal and other scandals of that nature, in order to put the past into proper perspective so that we can draw useful lessons. On August 10, 2016 Dirk Van Tichelt probably didn’t envision one of the greatest days of his life ending in the hospital. But that’s exactly where the Belgian judoka found himself Monday night hours after winning his first-ever Olympic medal Van Tichelt won bronze in the 73-kg judo competition on Monday. Naturally, he went off to Copacabana Beach that night to celebrate the achievement. And that’s where things went awry. Van Tichelt was reportedly assaulted by a thief on the famous beach, and was struck in the face. He was taken to the hospital after the incident. The thief, who was reportedly Brazilian, came away with a cell phone, but, crucially, not with a bronze medal. The Belgian Olympic Committee released a statement confirming the details, and saying that Van Tichelt didn’t require treatment at the hospital. He appeared at a media event the next day with a black eye, and, undoubtedly, a smile on his face. Van Tichelt now has more than just a medal to commemorate his Olympic success. http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/judo-medalist-beaten-up-robbed-in-rio/ |

Paul Pogba has called his long-awaited return to Manchester United “destiny,” and acknowledged that he is back to finish what he started at the club. Pogba became the most expensive footballer in history on Tuesday when he moved to Old Trafford from Juventus for a record-breaking fee of €105 million. The 23-year-old midfielder had started his professional career at United, making just seven appearances for the club before joining the Bianconeri on a free transfer in the summer of 2012. Speaking in an interview with MUTV following the announcement of the deal, Pogba characterised his United return as fate, and said it was something his mother had predicted all along. “I think it’s destiny, I would say it’s destiny,” Pogba, who will sign a five-year contract with United, said. “First my mum told me I would come back here and I told her, ‘You never know, we’ll see.’ “For myself as well it’s a big challenge too, just to come back to where I came from, where I grew up, where I started. I just didn’t finish what I started here so I think I came here to finish it. “My mum, she says, ‘Your mum is always right’ so she was right this time, so it’s good.” More on this @ http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/paul-pogba-on-manchester-united-return-i-came-to-finish-what-i-started/

Paul Pogba completes record transfer to Manchester United from Juventus ESPN FC’s Gab Marcotti, Steve Nicol and Craig Burley talk what’s next for Manchester United now that Paul Pogba is in the fold. Manchester United have secured the long-awaited signing of midfielder Paul Pogba from Juventus for a world-record fee. Pogba, 23, returns to Old Trafford four seasons after departing for Italy, with Juventus confirming the transfer fee of €105 million (£89.3 million, $116.4 million). The fee, payable over the next two years, can increase by an additional €5 million if certain conditions are met, Juventus said. The transfer beats the previous record fee of an estimated €100 million (£85 million) that Real Madrid paid Tottenham for Gareth Bale in 2013. When Pogba joined Juventus in 2012, United received just £800,000 in compensation, and the Frenchman quickly established himself as a key player, helping the Bianconeri win Serie A four times and the Coppa Italia twice. Pogba had made just seven appearances for United during his first spell with the Premier League club, all during the 2011-12 season, including three in the Premier League, three in the Capital One Cup and one in the Europa League. All seven of those were second-half substitute appearances, and he opted to leave when his contract expired after failing to establish himself in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team plans. He returns to United on a five-year contract, with an option to extend the deal for an additional season. “I am delighted to rejoin United,” Pogba told United’s official website. “It has always been a club with a special place in my heart and I am really looking forward to working with Jose Mourinho. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Juventus and have some fantastic memories of a great club with players that I count as friends. John Michael Nchekwube Obinna has been a Chelsea midfielder for the last 10 years, although you’ll know him as John Obi Mikel. But the Nigerian has officially changed his name, 13 years on from when he began to be known by his long-term moniker. As reported by the London Evening Standard, the Nigerian FA made an error when submitting Mikel for the 2003 FIFA Under-17 World Championship, naming him as “Mikel” instead of “Michael.” As Richard Innes of the Mirror said on Tuesday, “Confused? You will be.” Now, after going by either “Mikel John Obi” or “John Obi Mikel” during his Chelsea days, the Nigeria midfielder has finally had his name changed to the former to make clear that the “Mikel” is a given name. Per the piece, Mikel said the mistaken name had a “special ring to it,” which is why he adopted it following the clerical faux pas. He’s also set to continue wearing “Mikel" Rest of the article here;http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/john-obi-mikel-legally-changes-name-to-mikel-john-obi-after-nigerian-fa-mistake/

PORTUGAL ARE THE CHAMPIONS! Euro 2016 champions. Euro 2016 champions. Photograph: Kai Pfaffenbach/Reuters Ronaldo limps and winces up the steps with his team-mates. For the first time in a while he is wearing the broadest smile. After a few selfies and a lot of jumping around, Ronaldo lifts the trophy, screams with delight and starts kissing it. He looks like he cannot believe this has happened. The worst moment of his career has turned into the greatest. Portugal’s Renato Sanches jumps on teammates after Eder scores. It’s funny how football works. In the last 20 years, Portugal have had teams with far more attacking intent and flair, and they won bugger all. This team will forever be the first Portugal side to win a major tournament. It’s funny how football works (2). Ronaldo can win Euro 2016 AND the World Cup but Messi will still be number one The Portuguese forward is on the brink of achieving a senior international title, something his Barcelona rival has never managed, but the Argentine will always be superior The debate will run and run. Cristiano Ronaldo is one game away from winning Euro 2016 and if he does he will have achieved something even Lionel Messi has not: a major trophy with his national side. However, whatever happens on Sunday in Paris has no bearing on who is the better player. Because that is and always will be the Argentine. In an editorial published on Thursday, Goal ‘s chief correspondent Peter Staunton argued that if Cristiano claims the trophy on Sunday, he will have had a greater career than the Barcelona forward . But that is simply not the case – not now, nor never. There is no doubt that Ronaldo is a phenomenon. The Portuguese is a man whose extraordinary dedication and ambition mean he is always seeking to improve and to do even better. And it is that desire that has seen him win countless trophies, both collectively and individually – including three Ballons d’Or. Ronaldo is honest when asked about his objectives. “I want to become the best player ever,” he has said on a number of occasions. Cristiano Ronaldo winning Euro would give him special place in history. PARIS — Yup, this would be a game-changer. For all the silverware Cristiano Ronaldo has won at club level, helping Portugal become European champions would be something different. It’s not simply about the old argument over whether you can be in the conversation about being the greatest of all time (GOAT) if you never win the sport’s biggest prizes. That’s a popular, if silly, equation which infects other sports as well: Just ask Barry Sanders or Dan Marino, Elgin Baylor or Allen Iverson. Indeed, it’s often used to refute the GOAT claims of his archrival Lionel Messi. He’s been in four major finals for Argentina and lost every last one, most recently last month’s Copa America final. You can rationalize away that argument in many different ways, most persuasively the fact that football is a team sport and whether or not you win titles is often down to other factors, like the talent around you. But winning a major tournament at the international level is a wholly distinct experience. And if Ronaldo did it with Portugal, who were not among the pre-Euro favorites, it would be entirely new. Since 2003, when Ronaldo joined Manchester United, More Here; http://uneekomunikations.com/wp/cristiano-ronaldo-winning-euro-would-give-him-special-place-in-history/ |
The president of the Spanish football league says he is worried that Lionel Messi could leave to play in another country after being found guilty of tax fraud. Javier Tebas has also defended Messi’s innocence two days after a court ruled the Barcelona forward and his father defrauded the Spanish tax office of €4.1 million ($4.6m). Tebas said: “Of course I fear that [Messi] could leave, but the only thing I can tell him is that from La Liga we believe he isn’t guilty and we are happy to have him here.” On Wednesday, a court sentenced Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, to 21 months in prison.
