sarrki: between President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Congress (PDP) are gearing up for the February presidential election.
Atiku beat 11 opponents to get the PDP ticket at the weekend. The APC ratified the direct primary election of President Buhari in Abuja.
The APC said the choice before Nigerians in 2019 is that of light, which it said President Buhari represents, and darkness.
In a statement, party spokesman Yekini Nabena said: ”Nigerians have had enough of corrupt, cash and carry politicians. That was why in 2015, they came out en masse and elected a clean and transparent man in Muhammadu Buhari to clean the Augean stable. The candidature of Atiku Abubakar will bring back the undesired lot and their practices which Nigerians have long rejected and forgotten.
“The Nigerian electorate deserves to be given a choice of decency, integrity and honour and not dirt, corruption, and infamy. The choice between Buhari and Atiku is one between light and darkness; between positive change and business as usual; between transparency and under the table dealings.
“As we prepare for the forthcoming 2019 elections, one thing is clear. If the choice is between a presidential candidate/change agent who is rebuilding the country and refocusing our national priorities and attitudes on one hand, and another candidate who along with his gang of co-looters stole the country’s commonwealth and brought the country to its knees, that choice has already been made by the Nigerian electorate.”
The PDP said: “Nigerians have a choice of a man who will provide an efficient and business-friendly solution to the herdsmen crisis and a man whose government said ‘giving land for cattle ranching is better than death’.
“It is very obvious that faced with such a choice that Nigerians would definitely vote for the man who will get Nigeria working again.”
The Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation said there was confusion in the Buhari Campaign Organisation over Atiku’s emergence as the PDP candidate.
The APC accused Atiku of spending a large amount of money to buy delegates to get the ticket.
The party said the nation’s presidency should be about the scorecard of the candidates, pointing out that “Atiku’s scorecard is abysmally low and he has proven to be an untrustworthy and unreliable character”.
“In assessing candidates to be voted for during elections, Nigerians will normally consider the candidate’s background and antecedents. The pertinent question to ask about Atiku is what his scorecard in public office was?
“A case in point is Atiku’s revealing altercation with his former boss President Olusegun Obasanjo which exposed the level of corruption Atiku was enmeshed in.
“At the international level, Atiku has been reportedly place on the global watch list of the United States of America and has avoided travelling to the U.S. to avoid arrest and prosecution over a money-laundering and corruption case in that country.
“Really, is this the character and antecedent of a candidate Nigerians will be proud to vote for as our President, come 2019?
“Compared and contrasted with President Muhammadu Buhari’s consistent and principled stance on party affiliations, since 1999, Atiku has moved around different political parties – PDP, ACN, PDP, APC and now PDP, all in his blind and desperate pursuit of his ambition – The presidency of Nigeria. It is therefore very clear that if Atiku loses the presidential election in 2019, he will again defect from the PDP to another political platform.
“Atiku is known as a super rich Nigerian who entrenched the undemocratic practice of buying votes of delegates. During the APC National Convention in 2014, he spent several millions of dollars to buy delegates votes and emerged third, after Buhari and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
“On Sunday, he reportedly bought over virtually all the PDP delegates and was declared winner of the PDP presidential primaries. With these huge expenses expended to secure the PDP ticket, how will Atiku recoup his “investment” if not from the public treasury should he win the presidency?
“Our dear President Muhammadu Buhari does not spend a kobo on delegates as he banks only on his proven personal integrity. In any case, how did a retired Customs officer acquire so much wealth to fund his several presidential bids? The source of his wealth is very questionable and his financial resources are definitely ill gotten.”

BabaRamota1980: Did Atiku win...or was he stealthily installed, and why?
Revisit and read Deji Adeyanju since the PDP conference that produced Uche Secondus. Atiku was deliberately frustrated out of APC to drive him back to PDP. They did not know Saraki would defect. When Saraki joined Presidential race a quick strategy was devised to bring Atiku from low rating behind popular Saraki, sponsored Tambuwal and put him ahead of the two. If Saraki had won he would have become a galvanizing force against Buhari on age and qualification, he would more than likely have picked Ibo running mate and above all would split Buhari's support amongst Yorubas. Even if Buhari got all of NorthWest and NorthEast behind him, which is impractical, he would not have recovered losses in NorthCentral, SW, SE.
Tambuwal could only beat Buhari on money sponsorship from Wike, no other ground is in his favor.
With Atiku, he is in same academic rank with Buhari, age is not in his favor, his corruption records are lengthy and has zero knowledge or acquaintance in foreign relations, plus his political clout is scattered and unloyal. In every respect Atiku is a quick displacement for APC and will not take big effort. Defeating Saraki will require greater effort and work to be done.
The quick fix is to bring Atiku from behind Saraki and Tambuwal and give him big leap to victory.
Adeyanju should be working for CIA. He gave us plenty hints without revealing anything. Fayose's outburst and Wike's anger has confirmed it. #ArticulatedRestructuring4Progress. Nothing else matters. Up until early hours of October 7, 2018, Ayo Fayose thought he would be vice-Presidential candidate of PDP. Intention was that being a VP candidate would save him from Buhari and EFCC as PDP would be shouting persecution of its Vice- Presidential Candidates.
Unfortunately, the gamble was not to be. Fayose's last cloak of "immunity" was finally torn. What are his options? Join APC and receive anointing and "saintly" baptisms as done to Akpabio and others or face Buhari and EFCC. The way it is, Fayose has very limited options. Firstly he has been critical of Buhari and called him several unprintable names. Secondly, he is more of a political liability than Akpabio. He must therefore face his "Golgotha", which is the most honourable in the ensuing circumstance. Definitely, he would be in jail, but he will be there for the next 8 months to May 29, 2019. Alternatively, Fayose should look for how to escape. I for one thought that the PDP convention rowdiness was a very auspicious opportunity to "escape". |

HungerBAD: By Godwin Ijediogor and Joseph Onyekwere
Lanre Amu graduated at 24 and returned to Nigeria at 54 in 2015, after 34 years in the United States (US), and enrolled to serve the country under the National Youth Service Corps scheme. He explained why he took the action, sharing his experiences.
Why didn’t you serve immediately you graduated?
I left Nigeria at age of 21 in 1982. I graduated in the United States (US) at age of 24. You have to undertake the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme on Nigerian soil. I stayed, schooled and worked in the US for 34 years, so the opportunity or the awareness was not there. I returned to Nigeria at the age of 54 years in 2015. All of my university studies were in the US.
I actually did not know I was not exempted until I approached NYSC, trying to get an exemption letter, and the official in charge explained to me that I was not exempted and that I must serve, because it is mandatory, so long I was below 30 when I got my undergraduate degree. He explained how unfair it would be for those Nigerians similarly placed who did not leave the country and had to serve. I got the message clearly and I served.
What made you want to participate in the scheme, years after graduation and having grown older?
I did not want to do it. I needed to enter into the professions and my NYSC certificate or exemption certificate was requested in some places I went to. So, I went to NYSC office in Maitama, Abuja. They asked me to go and bring my credentials. I finally did. When they examined my credentials, they computed the age at which I got my first degree and said I must serve, that there is no exemption certificate for me, because when I got my first degree, I was less than 30 years old. So, I enrolled and did the NYSC and passed out in December last year.
What were your experiences in service?
Interesting. I was posted first to the State House/Presidency, but was rejected outright. As far as I know, three of us were posted to the State House: Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s daughter, Dr. Tabiti, and I. The only person taken at the State House of all of us was Osinbajo’s 20 something year old daughter. I found that interesting. Mind you, Osinbajo and I were schoolmates at Igbobi College Yaba, Lagos as teenagers.
I then tried to serve at Osinbajo’s Simmons Cooper Law firm, but I was also rejected. Shortly thereafter, Osinbajo was on the front page of national newspapers urging MDAs to stop rejecting corps members. Should charity not start at home? More so, with the government of change? I wrote a protest letter to Osinbajo on that hypocrisy, but he never responded to my letter. I ended doing my primary assignment at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. It was a worthwhile experience learning a great deal about Nigerian laws.
