The Department of State Service (DSS) has released Pius Awoke, the Ebonyi-based lawyer who was arrested on July 21, 2021.

This is happening one month after FIJ’s publication on the matter.

Kelechi Anwu, a colleague of Awoke, who first spoke to FIJ about the issue in May, said that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) was triggered to look into the case after FIJ’s publication.

“The NBA responded to the case because they read your article, which I made sure to circulate,” he told FIJ on Saturday.

“It is the link they got from the WhatsApp platform, even though they are refusing to acknowledge they got it from your article. I am grateful to God that they were able to acknowledge the issue and that they made efforts.

“Thank you, FIJ. You are the only media channel that agreed to hear our story and published the continued detention of Barr. Pius Awoke.”

In a statement released on Friday and shared with FIJ, NBA said Awoke was released from custody alongside one Onyiba Emmanuel Chinonso, a computer science student at Ebonyi State University.

“I am pleased to inform you that I have, today, 21 June 2024, secured the release of our colleague, Pius 1. Awoke, Esq of Abakaliki Branch from the custody of the Department of State Security (DSS). He was released alongside one Onyiba Emmanuel Chinonso, a computer science student of Ebonyi State University, who was arrested and detained with Mr. Awoke,” the NBA statement reads in part.

FIJ reported on May 23 that Awoke, who was arrested by the DSS while traveling from Ebonyi to Abuja on July 21, was still being held. A source had revealed that the agency refused to charge him in court or grant him bail as prescribed by the constitution.

“Awoke was travelling from Ebonyi to Abuja when officials of the DSS stopped his commercial vehicle and arrested him. They arrested all the men who were on the bus, including him, thinking they were of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) sect,” the source told FIJ.

“No one said anything to us for a long time; then later, they said he was being held for terrorism. But even this was a rumour; we had no official statement about the charge against him from the DSS, as lawyers and relatives were barred from interfacing with it.”

The lawyer was released on Saturday after spending about three years in detention.

People of Nairaland. This maybe my last post here. I had to create this moniker in order to keep my identity. My view about this world especially this country is just that nobody loves you, you are on your own. In the meantime, I'm in a loads of debt currently owing people. I thought of this life not worth living anymore. I've read a lot and that made me freethinker. I don't believe in the concept of heaven and hell. To me, I think su!c!de is an option. What is essence of living a life without no solution. You aim but miss. You plan yet fail. Nothing works in this country and no one, no body is ready to assist you or even lend you a hand despite the fact I help people a lot even to my detriment. I discovered it doesn't worth it. I have nothing to fear again. I've passed my fear.

This life is not worth living anymore for me. I need a release.

My apologies to my parents and siblings for failing them.

Don't listen or internalize any negative comments written here by some people that may not understand how you feel.

I was close to taking my life last year, only thing that stopped me was lack of courage to follow through.

I cried at night, cried to family so much they even got tired, went to the hospital for counseling and so on...

Eventually the mighty God came through for me and all those feelings went away.

I pray for you today that God blesses you so immensely that you can't help but fall on your knees in praise of him anytime you remember how he brought you out of this pit.

Let's just admit that Nigerians and some Nigerian businesses are built to frustrate progress.

Imagine doing budgeting for engineering works, using up to 10 seller prices per part listed, only to call all 10 and be told "prices have all changed"

So all 10 of them couldn't care less to update their prices on the site?

On Jiji, every seller is like a backend web designer that has the ability to EDIT their page.

This "I don't care" attitude by them epitomizes the typical jaga jaga Naija mentality.

I have called and called different sellers only to almost be in tears out of frustration.

You'd see something listed 25k. You add contact in whatsapp, or call, then they say, no price is now 50k or 60k or....

How can anyone plan expenditures for projects like this?

Why do some Nigerian things have to be so backward, upside down and frustrating?

When I used to sell on Jiji, I would always update my prices even if I listed a 100 products.

What kind of lazy, wicked, frustrating sellers are on the site nowadays?

I wish there were a way to report all these sellers, having them banned, so the sanity can be restored to the site.

Just wanna rant, cause I know this is not the right section.

You will call like 100 different sellers on Jiji and all of them will give you pricing that is different from what is listed on the site, claiming "prices have changed".

If Prices have changed, why not log in to Jiji and update your price? Why wait until a customer has done research for a product and found a fitting price only to call and be told it's not the price anymore.

Jumia sellers will NEVER DO THIS

Nigerians can be so difficult to work with ehn, its frustrating.

I now hate Jiji with a passion. I wish all sellers that don't update their pricing could be banned for life.

The site is now pointless, cause you will never see a price there that remains the same once you are ready to buy and make a call.
