Why the charge is foolish on its face

Nigerian bishops have exercised that duty across decades. Demanding silence only when the criticism lands on the current administration is selective and self-serving.

Bishops live among the people they serve. They hear the stories of kidnapping, hunger, unemployment, and fear. All these doesn't stand on sound logic. The other presidents that you mentioned, did they have audience with the presidents and their leader afterwards used a TV interview to reveal what they discussed and lambast the presidents? The answer is no.

They were at liberty to have attended any tv interview and say anything that they wanted to say against the president and his government just like any other in Nigeria. Onayaikan was ethically wrong to have granted that interview almost immediately after the president granted them audience. He would have been right to grant it if they had sort audience and the president didn't grant it. Too much politics takes away sound etiquette.

FYI I didn't attend formal secondary school but I'm a chartered accountant and I have other qualifications. I can't remember the last time interviewers asked for my originals. Once they ask me to tell them about myself and I get to the point of my secondary education everyone gets surprised. Instantly the issue of capability is settled. Other considerations might or might not give me the job. There are people with different gifts.

Look by the grace of God I'm a senior pastor in one of largest Pentecostal churches in this country. During COVID we were instructed to prevail on junior pastors under us to preach mostly messages of hope. I remember then that in my location we had as many as five service on a Sunday because of distancing. All messages were centered on hope, courage and patience. The feedbacks were very encouraging.

Clerics occupy powerful positions. Their words carry so much weight. In times of adversity their words are needed to direct and comfort.
