Debt is not the issue but what you do with the borrowed money. You can't develop at a fast pace with your cash only. Why are the banks in business? No matter what you owe what matters is the capacity to repay.

In fact you will be counted as a poor financial manager if there are opportunities with positive net cashflow but you refused to take them because you want to avoid debt.

Risk averse organisations don't grow fast. Risk takers do. But you must balance both of them.

A board composed of mainly risk takers will fly and burst. At the same time one composed mainly of risk avoiders will be very sluggish in their movement. The true game is balance it.

Nigerians make so much issue of borrowing. A state or country that has rapidly increasing population but deficit infrastructure cannot catch up with a balanced budget. It should be a deficit budget. Deficit is financed through borrowing.

The rules must be:
Judicious use of borrowed funds.
Borrow long to finance long
Borrow short to finance short
Avoid borrowing-project mismatch.

You don't know economics. It shows two things:
1 Nigerian fx rate is gradually being aligned to global economic dynamics. Before now people in CBN would have sat in their offices and fix rates that are not reflective.

2 Naira exchange rate volatility is under good control. If it was before the petroleum subsidy mafia would have made a kill because of the Iranian war. The rates in the open market might have increased only marginally but their subsidy claim would have emptied the foreign reserves. If the government wants to avoid this, the result would have been massive queue.

To provide infrastructure that has been in decay from the days of OBJ. It's massively done now all over the country. Subsidy savings have allowed us to effectively run governments, I mean governments, repay loans that are due without rescheduling and pay bills as and when due as well as save for the rainy day through increased reserves.

Borrowing will continue until our tax to gdp rate increases to average in the world. Ours is far bellow average. Sanusi as an economist should be asking about what the borrowed funds are used for. He can help us expose if they are used for recurrent expenditure. Which I don't expect an experienced finance person like PBAT to sanction.
