Gazzy88: ^^^ A country gets the army it deserves. For 40 years Nigerians have made excuses for the worst excesses of her soldiers. This nonsense in Abeokuta is just one more example of Nigerian soldiers demonstrating that they are indeed 'above' the law. Innocent law abiding Nigerians being brutalized for no reason. Was it these people who killed him? What kind of craziness is this? It will continue until Nigerians decide they want to live and be treated like humans instead of animals. Big blind country. |

And the invasion of communities by the Nigerian army continues till this day. And so taxpayers will foot the bill - yet again - for the lawlessness of some government 'employees' who have refused to learn. Until the emoluments, pensions and gratuities of soldiers are seized and used to pay for they damage they wilfully cause, the violence and destruction will not stop. Until then, Nigerians will continue to subsidize the impunity of these men. |

Tzadeola: ^^^ No. You could very well be trolling but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and challenge your claims with facts. You are speaking from both sides of the mouth when you ignore or explain away the costs of internet fraud to society (as the first 4 lines of your post clearly show) and then you claim in line 5: "I'm not saying what they are doing is right". So what are you saying then? Make up your mind! Internet fraud is not a victimless crime. It may not involve physical violence but it has victims - and the fallout very often does lead to physical violence. Victims can and do commit suicide when all they have worked for over a lifetime is lost. This nonsense being peddled around that internet fraud is somehow higher in the hierarchy of moral context than armed robbery or kidnapping has got to stop. They are all serious crimes and they are not victimless. Edit: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/facebook-connected-her-to-a-tattooed-soldier-in-iraq-or-so-she-thought/ar-AAF0nTI?ocid=spartandhp |
Car Talk / Re: 5 Major Car Brands That Are Now Defunct by VolvoS60(m): 1:16pm On Aug 10, 2019 |
ornicus: ^^^ It is delicious to watch. US automobile manufacturers have been greatly humbled by the events of the last half century and are playing catch up to the Japanese - an uphill task they are struggling mightily with. For every step GM, Chrysler etc. take, Toyota, Honda, Subaru etc. have already taken ten. Anyone want to play the nationalism (i.e. 'buy American') card? Well, Toyota and Honda have US plants and US suppliers and they actually employ US workers - whereas Ford, GM etc. have outsourced and continue to outsource production to Mexico and other low cost countries. Anyone want to play the "US car makers make better cars card?" That matter was settled a long time ago - Japanese cars are the undisputed kings of quality, reliability and durability - while US car makers continue to languish at the bottom of almost all quality and reliability surveys. The list goes on and on. The only thing left to prove that there is indeed justice in this world is for the tide to finally turn against European carmakers. Their high end product offerings are mostly over priced, unreliable status symbols with highly questionable build quality. But they (BMW, Audi, VW, MB, Land Rover etc.) would have us believe they are 'luxury cars' and these weaknesses are part and parcel of the luxury car ownership experience. Thankfully, the Japanese have proved them wrong. 1 Like |

naptu2: ^^^ As always, very well put together. I haven't read anything about Hanan Ashrawi in a long time - but I do remember her rather masculine voice. How do you typically source your material? Any background in library science or history? Any plans to collate your posts on here into a permanent record? I ask this because I almost wept after this site went down during the so-called NL tsunami - when hundreds of priceless (and yes they were priceless) threads were lost. If you know what happened at that time, kindly give a condensed summary (my apologies to anyone who feels I'm derailing the thread) with links, if possible. |

Unless you were at the scene, you simply cannot make the number of sweeping statements you made - and you made them so confidently. How do you know 'officers and soldiers are in detention'? Mostly US brands that have run their race and passed on to automotive heaven (or hell - depending on how you look at it). Nationalism won't save a bad/poor product. While US car makers were marketing their thirsty, poorly made, unreliable junk as "Detroit Iron", "Motor City", "proudly American" etc. the Japanese were slowly improving their products bit by bit, until one day, the US woke up to find out that the Japanese had taken over the market completely. Nippon just build damn good cars. They do break but they break on average far less than domestic US or European marques. And that's good enough for millions of consumers the world over and not just the US. While US car manufacturers were destroying their balance sheets with shambolic work practices, awful quality and process control, bloated executive compensation, destructive worker union practices etc., the Japanese just got down to work - building good, solid automobiles. Any No prizes for guessing who thrived and who withered. 3 Likes |

Cantonese: ^^^^ It isn't the first time. And it won't be the last. About a decade ago, the Nigerian navy seized a ship for illegal bunkering of petroleum products on the high seas off Nigeria's coast. The ship and its crew somehow disappeared after the arrest - with thousands of litres of illegally bunkered fuel also gone without a trace. The navy initially tried to pin the matter on the police with bogus claims that the police had taken custody of the ship from the navy shortly after arrest. The media circus went on for a while until the police asked the navy to provide the signals confirming that indeed, the ship was handed over to the police. The navy had no answer. The fallout of that incident was the We are now back there again. Three policemen and one civilian dead and Nigerians are being treated to this shameful back and forth exchange. The police have asked the question that must be answered: where is the kidnapping suspect that those policemen were transporting? Where is he? 4 Likes 1 Share |

There is a problem when the leaders of "5th world" countries and the leaders of 1st world countries use the same vehicles. Everyone here agrees about this - apart from a few professional trolls who tried to muddy the waters with their tribal nonsense. midolian: ^^^ You have not said anything of substance. In your first 2 paragraphs you mocked Sowore (and by extension all the other candidates who lost) for losing the last elections. Losing elections is not a crime - unlike several things the ruling government (and the APC party that produced it) is guilty of. Your next 2 paragraphs were nothing but pandering. Irrelevant largely. Nothing to respond to there. Your last paragraph included the obligatory reference to the Jonathan administration's well known misgovernance. But you pretend not to see the shipwreck that is the current administration. Nigerians brought all this upon themselves with their legendary inability to hold their leaders accountable. Rotimi47: ^^^ You say I "tend to be from Mars" (clearly meant as an insult) but then, that may not necessarily be a bad thing. Every reference to Martians I have ever seen (and I have seen several!) always depicts them as advanced life forms with an advanced civilization. Have you ever seen anyone (including reprobate demagogues masquerading as statesmen) call Mars a shithole? . I think not. Make of that what you will. Rotimi47: ^^^ I have no idea how you came up with this statement you credited to me. What I said was that the political, military and business elite in Brazil and Cuba is dominated by people of European descent and that Sir, is incontrovertible. Rotimi47: ^^^ I have no idea what you are talking about here. What prompted this assumption? Rotimi47: ^^^ Again I have no idea what you are talking about here. What relevance does this have to the discussion? Rotimi47: ^^^ I presume when you say 'we' you are referring to your kinsmen (if indeed you are who you say you are ). The only reason I engaged you was because you made some incredible claims about alliances between an ethnic group in Nigeria and the nations of Brazil, Cuba and Russia. That's all. Unlike all the other wild claims (e.g. my ethnicity is bigger than yours, etc.) being made by several posters on this thread, claims like yours can be swiftly repudiated with cold hard facts from history. Rotimi47: ^^^ I see. I assume you aren't trolling - your response seems breathtakingly naïve. What are the reasons why you don't want to elaborate on the links between your kinsmen (if indeed you are who you say you are ) and Cuba/Brazil? The link you speak about between Nigeria on one hand and Brazil + Cuba on the other is primarily due to Cubans and Brazilians of African descent who come to Nigeria to celebrate their heritage - the forebears of these Afro-Cubans and Afro-Brazilians were brought to the Americas as slaves. I am sorry to disappoint you but Afro-Cubans and Afro-Brazilians do not form a significant part of the political, business or military elite in Cuba or Brazil. The decision makers in these two countries are people of European descent - and they are most certainly not coming to Nigeria to fight a dubious war on the prompting of black people in Cuba/Brazil - black people who are the underclass in these two countries. That is the awful truth. According to you, Cuba will come to fight in Nigeria and Russia will inevitably be drawn into that conflict. If only it were so simple. Your rather flawed calculations belong to the cold war era and that era is long, long gone. There's a new order now and you (i.e. Nigeria and all in it) are of no strategic value to Russia. Or North Korea. Russian soldiers are not coming here for anything - unless it is to sell Kalashnikovs and other military hardware by the boatload to warring African 'tribesmen' - and they will sell to anybody who has the cash to buy. You mention Israel? Israel is an economic and military powerhouse with nuclear weapons. It has the United States' political and business elite in its back pocket. People with strong ties to Israel have a firm hold on key parts of the international banking system. Which Nigerian ethnic group ticks any of these boxes? Wake up. 2 Likes |

I am very interested in how Russia and North Korea have become such strong allies of an African ethnic group - to the point that they will join this ethnic group in prosecuting a 'war' against another African ethnic group . Is there some defence or non-aggression pact in play here? Is there a trade relationship? Are there cultural ties? Military ties? What is the basis of this "alliance"? 1 Like |

erico2k2: ^^^ I had a case years ago. The insurance company paid up but the claim paid was far (and I mean far) less than the cost of repairing the vandalized vehicle. This nonsense at the ports is classic government failure. Consumers/Importers are being tossed around (like footballs) between shipping lines and insurance companies - and forced eventually to cover the cost of theft, vandalism and destructiveness by wharf rats, drivers and so called port security. The shipping lines and insurance companies are private economic agents. They will cheat consumers/importers if they believe they can get away with it - that's the plain truth. They are emboldened when the government - the government that's supposed to keep them in check - actively aids and abets them in defrauding consumers. Sensible laws (and honest governments ready to enforce them) are the only thing that protects people from companies. And if it is the government that is responsible for lax security at the ports - security breaches that cost people time and money to fix - then people should know what to do. We are not helpless. There are remedies for useless governments. We have just been too lazy and stupid to apply them. 1 Like |

Buying a used car could be a journey into uncharted waters - getting a good specimen with a service history will not be easy in our environment. dirtydiva: ^^^ This is cognitive dissonance. You can't claim to be against military brutality - and at the same time justify it. It makes no sense whatsoever. And yet again, your comment up there implies that the entire village/town is somehow complicit in the killings of the soldiers. Is that possible? The entire village endorsed the killings of those men? The Nigerian army has followed this scorched earth policy for years whenever any of its personnel are harmed or killed in the line of duty. No proper investigation and prosecution by the appropriate authorities - just a burning, looting, pillaging spree. Is that how a proper army works? |
