A country gets the army it deserves.

For 40 years Nigerians have made excuses for the worst excesses of her soldiers. This nonsense in Abeokuta is just one more example of Nigerian soldiers demonstrating that they are indeed 'above' the law.

Innocent law abiding Nigerians being brutalized for no reason. Was it these people who killed him? undecided What kind of craziness is this?

It will continue until Nigerians decide they want to live and be treated like humans instead of animals.

And so taxpayers will foot the bill - yet again - for the lawlessness of some government 'employees' who have refused to learn.

Until the emoluments, pensions and gratuities of soldiers are seized and used to pay for they damage they wilfully cause, the violence and destruction will not stop. Until then, Nigerians will continue to subsidize the impunity of these men.

You could very well be trolling but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and challenge your claims with facts.

You are speaking from both sides of the mouth when you ignore or explain away the costs of internet fraud to society (as the first 4 lines of your post clearly show) and then you claim in line 5: "I'm not saying what they are doing is right". undecided

So what are you saying then? Make up your mind!

Internet fraud is not a victimless crime. It may not involve physical violence but it has victims - and the fallout very often does lead to physical violence. Victims can and do commit suicide when all they have worked for over a lifetime is lost.

This nonsense being peddled around that internet fraud is somehow higher in the hierarchy of moral context than armed robbery or kidnapping has got to stop. They are all serious crimes and they are not victimless.

It is delicious to watch. cheesy US automobile manufacturers have been greatly humbled by the events of the last half century and are playing catch up to the Japanese - an uphill task they are struggling mightily with. For every step GM, Chrysler etc. take, Toyota, Honda, Subaru etc. have already taken ten. Anyone want to play the nationalism (i.e. 'buy American') card? Well, Toyota and Honda have US plants and US suppliers and they actually employ US workers - whereas Ford, GM etc. have outsourced and continue to outsource production to Mexico and other low cost countries. Anyone want to play the "US car makers make better cars card?" That matter was settled a long time ago - Japanese cars are the undisputed kings of quality, reliability and durability - while US car makers continue to languish at the bottom of almost all quality and reliability surveys. The list goes on and on.

The only thing left to prove that there is indeed justice in this world is for the tide to finally turn against European carmakers. Their high end product offerings are mostly over priced, unreliable status symbols with highly questionable build quality. But they (BMW, Audi, VW, MB, Land Rover etc.) would have us believe they are 'luxury cars' and these weaknesses are part and parcel of the luxury car ownership experience. undecided

Thankfully, the Japanese have proved them wrong.

Politics / Re: Killing Of Policemen: Police Slams Army. Asks, "Where Is Arrested Kidnapper?" by VolvoS60(m): 4:54am On Aug 10, 2019
naptu2:

There is a gap in the primary school education in Nigeria and this has produced hilarious, strange and dangerous consequences.

Nigerians are taught that there are different kinds of numerals and we are specifically taught the Arabic (1, 2, 3) and Roman numerals (I, II, III, IV).

However, most Nigerians are not taught that there are different kinds of scripts and this is the problem.

Many Nigerian communities were reading and writing before the arrival of European colonialists. Arabic was being taught in many Islamic schools in northern Nigeria and by the 1700s the Hausa had developed a system for writing the Hausa Language using Arabic script.

The word Ajami refers to the use of Arabic script to write African languages. African languages like Hausa, Swahili and Yoruba were written by using the Arabic script.

An example of famous text that were written through the use of Ajami script are the letters written by El Kanemi of the Kanem Bornu Empire to Sultan Bello of the Sokoto Caliphate in 1824.

Hausa is one of the languages mentioned in section 55 of the Nigerian constitution and therefore it is recognised by the Nigerian constitution. The motto is in Hausa language because of the origin of the Nigerian Army. The Army was initially known as "Glover's Hausas".

When Governor Glover assembled the Glover's Hausas in 1863, Hausa was written using Arabic script and so the motto, "Victory Is From God Alone" was written in Hausa, using Arabic script.

Aliko Dangote's great-grandfather, Alhassan Dantata could understand a little bit of English (just enough for him to be able to transact business with the British), didn't understand any Arabic (although he learned the Quran by rote), but he could read and write Hausa very well using Ajami script.

Here's an example that illustrates the point. We all know that Hyundai is a famous Korean car maker. I just wrote Hyundai by using latin script, yet the word Hyundai does not mean anything in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian (the main languages that use latin script).

Yet the word "Hyundai" did not magically change into an English, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian word just because I wrote it using Latin script. That's because there's a difference between a language and the script or characters with which it is written.

Similarly, the text on the logo of the Nigerian Army and also the texts on the Nigerian Naira, do not magically change into Arabic words because they are written using Arabic script.

Nigerian Naira? Yes! One of the characteristics of currency is that it should be easily identifiable by users. Therefore, the value of naira notes and kobo coins are written in numbers on the body of the coin or note, the value is also written in words in the English Language and it is also written in Hausa using Ajami script.

The size of the notes and weight of the coins are also slightly different, so that blind people can easily tell the value of the coin or note by feeling them.

Why are the value of naira notes and kobo coins written in Ajami? Well, the Hausa Language has been written in Ajami since the 1700s and it was not until the 1930s that the British introduced Boko (that is, Hausa Language that is written using Latin script). Therefore, there are still many people that understand Ajami but do not understand Boko.

Why is the Nigerian Army's motto written in Ajami? It's tradition, just the same way that the British Army's motto is in Latin, "Si vis pacem, para bellum" (Latin for "If you wish for peace, prepare for war" ), despite the fact that it's more than a thousand years since Britain was colonised by the Roman Empire.

This should be very easy to understand, but the problem in Nigeria arises from superstition and lack of proper education.

1) Many Nigerians do not even know that there's anything like Ajami and they believe that those words are from Arabic Language.

2) Many Nigerians cannot separate Arabic Language from Islam.

I need to take a moment to explain this point.

Many Nigerians (both Christians and Muslims) cannot separate the Arabic Language from Islam.

This is also true of Christians. Many Christians in Nigeria do not know that the word Allah simply means God in Arabic and that the word has been used by Arab Christians and Arabs of other faiths long before Prophet Muhammad was born.

In fact, I remember an argument I had with a guy in the 1990s. I told him that Hanan Ashrawi is an Arab Christian and that when she prays in her language she calls God Allah. The guy refused to believe it. In fact, she refused to accept that Hanan Ashrawi is a Christian when in fact she is a Christian!

This is made worse by the kind of superstitious beliefs that many Nigerians have. Some Nigerians believe that there is something sinister or satanic about the writings on the Nigerian currency and on the Nigerian Army's logo, when in actual fact all that those writings say are, "20 Naira", "50 Naira" , "Victory Is From God Alone", etc.

^^^
As always, very well put together. I haven't read anything about Hanan Ashrawi in a long time - but I do remember her rather masculine voice.

How do you typically source your material? Any background in library science or history?

Any plans to collate your posts on here into a permanent record? I ask this because I almost wept after this site went down during the so-called NL tsunami - when hundreds of priceless (and yes they were priceless) threads were lost. angry To this day I do not know exactly what happened because I was offline around that time (in 2014 I think?).

GeoAfrikana:

Firstly, in Nigeria wearing camo is constitutionally illegal. People need to assimilate that. Anyone who has a problem with that should channel his grievances to the right place.

Secondly, there's nothing wrong in military moving around town. The only thing is that they shouldn't go with their guns so as not to intimidate civilians. And to be frank, those soldiers don't cross your lane na, they just bounce gallantly in their camo and their women catwalk in their camo. I personally have a distaste for the swagz of female soldiers. It is lousy civilians that always go and cross their lane.

And one thing about soldiers is that they always try to avoid fighting unjustly because it can bring serious punishment for them in the barracks. It's just that you people won't be informed that they're being punished. So soldiers don't look for trouble.

And even when someone offends them, immediately you show remorse and apologize they leave. But no, bigger will always want to show ego. Lawyer will start saying jargons, teacher will be saying grammar and fineboy will be forming swagger instead of apologizing after doing the wrong thing.

In my opinion, soldiers are the best people you can deal with. They're straightforward and not dubious and hypocritic like some police officers. Only crazy people have Problems with them.

Mostly US brands that have run their race and passed on to automotive heaven (or hell - depending on how you look at it). grin

Nationalism won't save a bad/poor product. While US car makers were marketing their thirsty, poorly made, unreliable junk as "Detroit Iron", "Motor City", "proudly American" etc. the Japanese were slowly improving their products bit by bit, until one day, the US woke up to find out that the Japanese had taken over the market completely. wink

Nippon just build damn good cars. They do break but they break on average far less than domestic US or European marques. And that's good enough for millions of consumers the world over and not just the US.

While US car manufacturers were destroying their balance sheets with shambolic work practices, awful quality and process control, bloated executive compensation, destructive worker union practices etc., the Japanese just got down to work - building good, solid automobiles.

Any Japanese Toyota line worker had full authority to stop the line at any time to resolve a quality issue. US car makers on the other hand considered line stoppage the equivalent of original sin. undecided

No prizes for guessing who thrived and who withered.

^^^^
It isn't the first time. And it won't be the last.

About a decade ago, the Nigerian navy seized a ship for illegal bunkering of petroleum products on the high seas off Nigeria's coast. The ship and its crew somehow disappeared after the arrest - with thousands of litres of illegally bunkered fuel also gone without a trace. The navy initially tried to pin the matter on the police with bogus claims that the police had taken custody of the ship from the navy shortly after arrest. The media circus went on for a while until the police asked the navy to provide the signals confirming that indeed, the ship was handed over to the police.

The navy had no answer. undecided

The fallout of that incident was the compulsory retirement dismissal, court-martial and imprisonment of several senior naval officers.

We are now back there again. Three policemen and one civilian dead and Nigerians are being treated to this shameful back and forth exchange. The police have asked the question that must be answered: where is the kidnapping suspect that those policemen were transporting? Where is he? undecided

What are the reasons why you don't want to elaborate on the links between your kinsmen (if indeed you are who you say you are wink) and Cuba/Brazil? grin The link you speak about between Nigeria on one hand and Brazil + Cuba on the other is primarily due to Cubans and Brazilians of African descent who come to Nigeria to celebrate their heritage - the forebears of these Afro-Cubans and Afro-Brazilians were brought to the Americas as slaves. I am sorry to disappoint you but Afro-Cubans and Afro-Brazilians do not form a significant part of the political, business or military elite in Cuba or Brazil. The decision makers in these two countries are people of European descent - and they are most certainly not coming to Nigeria to fight a dubious war on the prompting of black people in Cuba/Brazil - black people who are the underclass sad angry in these two countries. That is the awful truth.

According to you, Cuba will come to fight in Nigeria and Russia will inevitably be drawn into that conflict. If only it were so simple. grin grin Your rather flawed calculations belong to the cold war era and that era is long, long gone. There's a new order now and you (i.e. Nigeria and all in it) are of no strategic value to Russia. Or North Korea. Russian soldiers are not coming here for anything - unless it is to sell Kalashnikovs and other military hardware by the boatload to warring African 'tribesmen' angry - and they will sell to anybody who has the cash to buy.

You mention Israel? grin Israel is an economic and military powerhouse with nuclear weapons. It has the United States' political and business elite in its back pocket. Interesting and amusing thread.

First of all - I avoid the use of the word "tribe" - I prefer the word "ethnicity" or the phrase "ethnic group".

I am very interested in how Russia and North Korea have become such strong allies of an African ethnic group - to the point that they will join this ethnic group in prosecuting a 'war' against another African ethnic group grin. Is there some defence or non-aggression pact in play here? Is there a trade relationship? Are there cultural ties? Military ties? What is the basis of this "alliance"? undecided

I have no 'street' grin credentials and I don't know who Victoria Kimani is (although she spoke the bitter truth).

What I find odd is Nigerians supposedly mocking East Africans for their very dark skin tones (as if we don't have very dark skinned Nigerians too? undecided). I hope this is light hearted fun at most and not meant as a real insult. Any (black) African who knows what racism is will understand exactly what I'm talking about.

It does,.The insurance company would have to pay you and they will collect their money from the shipping line!

I had a case years ago. The insurance company paid up but the claim paid was far (and I mean far) less than the cost of repairing the vandalized vehicle. angry

This nonsense at the ports is classic government failure. Consumers/Importers are being tossed around (like footballs) between shipping lines and insurance companies - and forced eventually to cover the cost of theft, vandalism and destructiveness by wharf rats, drivers and so called port security. undecided

The shipping lines and insurance companies are private economic agents. They will cheat consumers/importers if they believe they can get away with it - that's the plain truth. They are emboldened when the government - the government that's supposed to keep them in check - actively aids and abets them in defrauding consumers.

Sensible laws (and honest governments ready to enforce them) are the only thing that protects people from companies. And if it is the government that is responsible for lax security at the ports - security breaches that cost people time and money to fix - then people should know what to do.

We are not helpless. There are remedies for useless governments. We have just been too lazy and stupid to apply them.

Some one asked the question on my mind - if the car was giving trouble?

My take on this: If the car's running fine why not stick with it? Buying a used car could be a journey into uncharted waters - getting a good specimen with a service history will not be easy in our environment.

I'm sometimes bored with my vehicle but I've learned to love it rather than leave it. Better boredom than 'excitement' that leads to financial ruin grin.

I m not in support of razing down people's house just because two officers were killed neither do I support their lawless behavior, what I m saying is that don't start a battle you can't finish, why attacking a govt force you know dat can react in abnormal way? Had it bn dey mind their own biz then the case will be different, we all know that some of ds officers are drug addicts and can't be rely on in terms of minimal destruction so why provoking them?

This is cognitive dissonance.

You can't claim to be against military brutality - and at the same time justify it. It makes no sense whatsoever.

And yet again, your comment up there implies that the entire village/town is somehow complicit in the killings of the soldiers. Is that possible? The entire village endorsed the killings of those men? undecided

The Nigerian army has followed this scorched earth policy for years whenever any of its personnel are harmed or killed in the line of duty. No proper investigation and prosecution by the appropriate authorities - just a burning, looting, pillaging spree.

Is that how a proper army works? undecided
