You are putting negative twist to that saying: ''No good deed goes UNPUNISHED''. Keeping that money could have ended him in a hot water because you don't know who is watching.

No good deed goes UNPUNISHED....is a way of saying that sometimes people who do good things are not appreciated, or people become hostile to them..e.g like in this case many of you are calling him names for returning the money, friends and families may insult and abuse him for not taking that money to help himself. That is the punishment he receives for doing good thing.
