Webmasters / Re: Legal Issue Regarding Domain Name by WebHostingPal: 12:41am On Jul 19, 2014
agonbello: Good evening fellows.

I have a question regarding domain name registration.

Assuming I register a domain name titled jegede.com. I notice that someone somewhere can also register jegede.org, or jegede.ng or jegede.com.ng.

Now, my question is: How can I stop anyone from using the word "jegede" ?

Thanks and remain blessed.

As far as the Internet is concerned, there is no law and there wouldn't be any that would stop anybody from registering jegede.whatever

The best you you can do is to purchase the whole jegede.whatever which is basically pointless... grin

ProGSM: Hi,

I will love to hear what you think about online chat support for a company.

Are you likely to join a host with online support chat than a host that has not online support.

Let's talk about it.

Although we have online chat system available 24/7, but strangely enough 85% of our customers prefer to submit support tickets instead on online chat. I guess IamGodzilla is right from a client's point of view. In our own case, there has never been a delay in response via ticket submission or online chat. I think people would be contented as long as they get prompt support regardless online chat or ticket submission.

Briefly looking, it looks like custom built, although it is possible to completely remove all traces to most of the content management applications out there. I don't think html belongs to that list, most sites have a bit of html codes in them. grin

Overtime, so many Nigerian web gurus's activities online were limited somehow due to the fact that Paypal, the o number one online payment processor decided not to allow Nigerians access to it portal but here is the goodnews! PAYPAL now accepts Nigeria and Nigerian cards. You can quickly sign up for it and get verified with your Nigerian bank issued debit or credit card. Now you bob shop anywhere online. Yes! I know you understand. I have my own verified Paypal account now no probs. Visit paypal.com to sign up now or www.feelib.com to see how you can make money online with your paypal abount. I'm out!

Yeah that's been a while now and it's a good development grin We now accept Paypal at HostNigeria! Unlike before, we can now accept all forms of credit/debit card in multiple currencies; NGN, USD and GBP with PayPal. I think other businesses should signup as well for the simple reason that Paypal 100% supports SME. No upfront payment unlike the ridiculous 150,000 Naira we were asked to pay just to setup account excluding other charges by some of these naija payment collection companies... you know those I mean ? grin

We will start to see price slashing in Nigeria online payment companies... grin grin

Webmasters / Re: Which Of The Web Hosting Can I Buy. by WebHostingPal: 6:48am On Jul 13, 2014
joyous: Hello my people , which of These Webhosting is available for Nigerians to purchase among. Hostgator, namecheap and godaddy. And which of the Nigerian Webhosting can offer unlimited hosting and bandwith.
Thanks

Hello, check out HostNigeria! for quality, reliable and affordable web hosting services in Nigeria.

Don't take my words for it, do a thorough research yourself and find out more about web hosting. Unlimited space and bandwidth are only used to persuade potential customers, you'll never find any web hosting company that will ever give you that smiley where ever you go and no matter how much you pay, even if you own the servers and the warehouse etc one day you will surely run out of space and bandwidth.

The buffet guy still rocks, it's the best and most friendly explanation ever. It's always a tricky one to explain, but I'm going to take it a little further.

Something most people probably don't know is that all the foreign web hosting companies like the ones you mentioned don't even own their own servers, they rent the servers on a monthly, yearly basis, depending on the contract, in most cases, not-binding contract, then they sub-rent it to the public. This is why you see most web hosting companies using different server locations, because once they exhaust their allocated disks, they move on, either to another server location, with the same company (call it provider if you like) or with another provider. For the sake of this article, provider is the [Real Owner] of the servers

Here is a break down for you to better understand the hierarchy- Listed according to their importance

[Real Server Owners - 1] - They own the servers, locations (Rented/Owned warehouse-mostly in remote areas), with high security etc - multi-billion investments - These guys don't normally get involved with web-hosting or have any direct relationship with the end-users. If these guys don't invest, build or manufacture servers, there would be no web hosting today, most of their servers are custom built to suit them.

[Big Hosting Companies - 2] - GoDaddy, Hostgator, Namecheap, Resellerclub etc have to pay [Real Server Owners] above to rent servers, then resell directly to the [Resellers] and the [End-Users] below. (Big Investment may be involved, mainly on advertisements etc.)

[Small Hosting Companies - 2] - Like the [Big Companies Above], the small web hosting companies can get their servers directly from the [Real Server Owners] above as well, but they may not necessarily have the enough capital to invest in ads like the [Big Hosting Companies]

[Resellers - 4] - These guys basically resell for the likes of the [Big Hosting Companies] listed above and sometimes for the [Small Hosting Companies] as well - you don't need big capital here, just a little less than the [Small Hosting Companies] really.

[Affiliates] - This are the guys that pass on the words to the end-users to be - here no financial investment at all, may be a bit of time here and there advertising the products from all or any of the above will quickly earn you some commissions.

I know my response is beyond what you asked for smiley, I felt compelled to pass this on, there is nothing like unlimited space or bandwidth.

And finally, nothing those big companies can do that we cannot do here, well! apart from their bigger advertisement budgets.

Hope this helps smiley

Fantasywrita:

Thanks alot. Although I'm not satisfied. But I'm gonna take your advice on looking for hosting companies based on their features. If you have a good one in mind please do share.

Yeah, glad you are taking the advice. If you want a web host in S.A, I will say that you start your research based on web hosting companies in South Africa or if it's Nigeria, UK, US, you do the same.

If you are to host in Nigeria, there are few web hosting companies around, mine is one of them as you can see, HostNigeria!.
4 experienced staff and 2 interns. Over 18 years of experience collectively.

If you want to host in the UK and US I can recommend a few web hosting companies for you, as long as you are ready for scrutiny and intimidation.

When I was in the UK, I worked for Fasthosts and HeartInternet, massive web hosting companies they are. They have this preconceived opinion and as a result adopted this weird policies to vigorously scrutinise web hosting account registrations coming from Africa, them lot including, Enom, HostGator etc, they all do the same.

They will put accounts on-hold after collecting payment, for security and verification.

Absolutely ridiculous and this is why I personally don't recommend foreign web hosts. So if you ever wondered why Nigerian web hosting accounts get quickly terminated within months of registration there you go.

Hope this helps. smiley

Fantasywrita:

Let's just say its more convenient for me to host in S.A than in Nigeria. But I want to know if they have a better hosting companies than Nigeria.

Alright, gotcha.

Personally I don't compare web services based on countries, it will be wrong to do so anyway.

You can't say US based web hosting companies are better than Uganda based ones and vice versa.

What you need to look for in a web host are the features, technicality, affordability, company's reputation and the list goes on.

Even the top review websites don't rate based on countries, although they may categorise web hosts based on countries, but it's one thing you are most likely not to get answer to.

Hope this helps.

Webmasters / Re: Some Web Developers Are Just Worthless by WebHostingPal: 12:52am On Jul 11, 2014
NumberOne2: I had an experience today. A client had a domain but didn’t have a website. He wanted my company to do the website. He called the dude that registered the domain and the guy said he will send the logins. That was 2 weeks ago.
Now the site is done, the clown refused to send the logins. He kept giving excuses and asking the client for some fee to transfer the domain. The bottom line is, he doesn’t want to hand it over.
All I want to do is upload the site to the domain. The client already has existing email facilities on the domain which works perfectly.

The question is, why does he not want to hand over the logins?
Possible reasons:
1) He is scared that my company will start managing the domain.
2) The annual hosting or maintenance fee he charges the client will come to me.

Now the client is pissed and wants to register a fresh domain and has given me the go ahead.
As a business man I feel sad for him. He has to change his letter heads, business cards, email address and other contacts just because the previous developer refused to hand over the logins.

How much hosting and maintenance fee does he collect that is enough to ruin another person’s business?

There are few interesting points in the above responses that I agree with, how ever I disagree with some of the responses. But I guess your post is more of a concern rather than to spark a debate.

You can't blame the domain registrar, your client should have read the terms. And in most cases you would be charged a domain transfer fee anyway, so it's always good to read the terms, making sure it's well understood.

Secondly, you would find out that most people that claim to be web designers or developers aren't. You have wannabes, you have the self taught, they dominate the market and you have a minority of the real qualified ones. So you basically need a kin eye to separate the wheat from the chaff.

In web design or development, the tell-tale is always the price tag, that should send in the alarm bell smiley

So my point is that, it's always a good idea to do a thorough research about a web design or development company before committing to part away with your hard earned cash.

And finally, if you know how, you can retrieve the domain name for your client, as long as the domain is registered in that client's name and within ICAAN regulations. I have done this a number of times for clients that found themselves in similar situation.

Here you go, make this your starting point https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2012-02-25-en

Hope this helps.

callmejulian: I got into an argument last week with my room mates and i want to prove to them that there is actually a theme that resembles that of jumia.com and konga.com . i will really appreciate it if anyone can help because i would love to see the look on his face once i prove him wrong.

Jumia seems to be custom coded and I can only assume that the site's look is not based on any particular template. Jumia a Rocket Internet venture has online store in Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire and Uganda using the same look and feel all over the countries they operate in. It's multi-billion Naira business.

On the other hand, Koga the owner of Dealdey is developed with Magento, one of those popular ecommerce software. Even though Konga is powered by a well known ecommerce system, I would assume that they have built their own template.

Hope this answers your question smiley

Webmasters / Re: Favicon (request) by WebHostingPal: 1:26am On Jul 09, 2014
Sorry I'm not running a charity organisation grin moreover you've got one for free above, yet you are still not contented.

Funny enough, you can afford to pay for XenForo right ? yet you are seeking free service here. The software is not exactly cheap is it ? Or did you get it for free from Kier and Mike ? You could have asked them to do you the favicon for free as well.

Like XenForo has got business to run, so do I. I just don't get it why our people are happy to spend their money abroad to those companies that don't even pay taxes here in Nigeria, but when it comes to local businesses you would be asking for free services, you should love your country first you know ?

Anyway, you have options, use the favicon created for you above, get free publicly available ones on the Internet, make your own or keep searching for a good Samaritan. Better still you can publicly submit a proposal and your budget, then you will see how quickly people will respond to you.

Best of luck.
Webmasters / Re: [HELP] How To Space My Ads Displayed On My Sidebar by WebHostingPal: 8:37pm On Jul 08, 2014
Do you have the resources to edit templates or css online ? You can do this conveniently via ftp if you have the access to your server.

Your css seems to be directly embedded into your template. Looking at your css codes, I'm guessing this is what you need to edit;

.main-inner .columns {
padding-left: 180px; ----- change to what ever >
padding-right: 180px; ---- change to what ever >
}

body {
min-width: 930px;
}
.content-outer, .content-fauxcolumn-outer, .region-inner {
min-width: 930px;
max-width: 930px;
_width: 930px;
}
.main-inner .columns {
padding-left: 180px;
padding-right: 180px;
}
.main-inner .fauxcolumn-center-outer {
left: 180px;
right: 180px;

Hope this helps.

HeWhoMusntBeNamed: ok bro, tnx so far. How would i find the width of my sites side colum, is it on template??
Webmasters / Re: [HELP] How To Space My Ads Displayed On My Sidebar by WebHostingPal: 7:30pm On Jul 08, 2014
Okay, there are few ways to go about this, the easiest way is to go to where you are getting the banners from and request for banners that best fit the layout of your website, in this case, the right column. There will be dimensions in your css that controls the width of your site's side columns, find out what the width is and that will help you determine the width of banners you will be requesting for your site.

The other way round is if you are willing to alter the layout of your website to conform with banner dimensions, personally I will choose the first option over this, because in this case here, you will be altering your css every now and then just to conform with banner dimensions.

However, if you still wish to get down to the nitty-gritty, then locate your site's css and look for the part that controls the side columns, depending on the software you are using, some will call the sides "right column, left column", or "Left Block, Right Block" and different names like that.

You will need to find what your right and left side columns are called in the css. Once you find this, you will need to adjust the width to suit the size of the banners.

This shouldn't take you long to fix.

Hope this helps
