gr8ever: You guys shouldn't let your ego take over the main purpose of this forum.....We no dey Oputa. What a way to start your request for advice ... smh |
caballerotosyno: Thanks for the wonderful trend. Pls can smone give a step by step procedure on registering and writing GRE and TOEFL. IncludingGRE info: http://www.ets.org/gre TOEFL info: http://www.ets.org/toefl All you need to know are contained in those links. But if after going through those you still have (specific) questions, feel free to ask ![]() |
npn: are you a student of a Nigerian university? if you are then i think your studentship should be withdrawn, how can you not know what SSANU means. This is dumbest question i have ever heard, it means (Senior Staff Association Of Nigerian University). It is a union of all senior staffs(Teaching staff do not belong to SSANU. |
babsharon: Good Morning gbogbo ile !!! I dey hail all the gurus in the house, please base on the new score scale for GRE test what kind of score can somebody have †̥o meet 500 based on old point if α school required that.Verbal: 500 (Old Scale) => 153 (New Scale) Quantitative: 500 (Old Scale) => 144 (New Scale) Source: http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/concordance_information.pdf |
For those looking for PhD programs with fellowship, check out the University of Louisville. Requirements for eligibility seem very reasonable (GRE => 60th percentile, GPA => 3.25) Programs http://graduate.louisville.edu/sigs/degree-programs.html Funding http://graduate.louisville.edu/financial-support/grants_fellowships/University%20Fellowships |
djcrown: i dont have an international passport yet, does that mean that i am not qualify to write Toefl?I think its mandatory identification for the exam. Go get one ASAP. You'll also need it for your application process. |
imperiouxx: @web,k |
OjaP: You are right but I think WES is still the most respected of them all.True that! |
Nairaland FBI: Dear house members,How much is the tuition? On-campus jobs can only fetch you about $7-$13 an hour and you can only work 20hrs a week. Now you've got about 16 weeks the entire semester so do the math! As a graduate student you're better off chasing an assistantship with tuition waiver plus stipends. And its easier to get after your first semester. |
djunit1: Na today Naija name don spoil? Asking for tuition from Nigerians may or may not have anything to do with what Nigerians did recently. I went a whole semester before without paying a penny even though I am Nigerian but Indians couldn't. Every school is differentabájo! |
olarwarlay: @webdstradamus - it's Moorhead o my brother. Please can You help if You are close?I'm about 4.5 hrs away but then I checked with Fedex yesterday and realized it will cost $98 to mail it to you from here so I think you're better off going with the school's option. |
imperiouxx: It's like every place in Minnesota must start with "M" like Minneapolis, Minnekonta, Menomonie, Montevideo. Its a land of many "Minnes" ... |
olarwarlay: Can anyone be kind enough to help me with the i20 issue?. The only person I could have it sent to is not in the states now. Please, na beg i dey beg oo.Which MSU? Mankato or Moorhead? |
nice4life: A bill that offers automatic green card for F1 masters or Phd graduate will very hard to sell,Even if such bill is pass a company has to file for the green card .Otherwise offering green card to anyone with a masters or Phd from any school will create more problem for the us economy and defeat the purpose of the bill.Remeber how the indians have capitalize on the H1b?What I see is they might reduce the wait time it take to get the green card, some countries like India usually have a wait period of like 5 or 6years.I am very sure the bill will hasten the process of getting a green card and also reduce the restriction placed on spouses of potential green card or H1B holders.Care to elucidate what problems you foresee? |
OjaP: US Immigration Reform BillI share your sentiments bro ... hopes kinda dashed Obama had a better proposal for us ![]() Anyhoo, it seems we're back to square one ... dependency on employer. And they've even made it worse by requiring employers to pay significantly higher wages for H-1B hires. This might not go down well with small companies and the big ones too dey do shakara. Increment in H-1B quota did not even meet my expectation and going by what happened this year, 110k will not make much difference. However, pages 304 - 306 seem to hold some promise but it is not yet clear to me how that will be interpreted. Anybody wanna throw more light on those paragraphs? |
olarwarlay: Please house, how long do You think receiving my i20 through regular mail will take?. Minnesota State Uni wants to send my i20 and says I have to choose btw regular and fedex. Fedex is charging $107 for the service and that looks kinda outrageous.Could take anywhere from 4 weeks to infinity! If you can afford it, use the eshipglobal service (via Fedex) 'cos its more reliable. Its that expensive because its a 3rd party service. Alternatively, if you have someone in the US, you can have the university mail the I-20 to them (via regular mail) and then have them (your US contact) do a direct Fedex mail to you (saves you a lot). And should you want to go the other route (regular mail), make sure to use a P.O Box or PMB and then PRAY HARD . NEVER use a house address! |
virgin ice:Congrats! |
ferdimako: That's great! It's better than nothing!Yeah its actually very good considering the only eligibility is just being an int'l student! And then its very easy to maintain the scholarship throughout your program, you just need to participate in several activities on campus (like ASA, International Festival, community volunteer etc). Very good students go on to get real scholarships after their freshman year but these scholarships are highly competitive, most times requiring stellar GPA. Grad students on the other hand don't have to earn any contribution hours, they only have to maintain a 3.0 GPA (whic Caveat: It gets freaking cold here and by cold I really mean COLD! If you're not an indoor person and feel you can't survive very harsh 6-month winters, then MSU is a very bad deal for you ![]() |
OjaP: @ OP,Very correct! The in-state tuition "scholarship" is automatic for incoming students but then they have to work for it by participating in socio-cultural events through out the semester where they must earn a fixed amount of "contribution hours" otherwise they lose the "scholarship". Great deal if you ask me ![]() |
OjaP: I understand. Most of these companies are not even ready to talk to you at all if you look or your name sound African. I have attended up to 12 interviews with some major and small oil companies in the past and one of the first set of questions they ask are,Well said! Internships matter so much for us here cos that's the only experience US employers can really relate to (Dem no send your Naija experience). Like you said, lets all work hard and pray even harder. The coming months will be very critical in the life of all US non-immigrant visa holders with actual immigrant intentions ![]() |
OjaP: Even with that, a company must be and/or willing to offer a job and sponsor you right?Yeah ... that's the problem with H-1B. Its completely dependent on a company's willingness to file for you. By 200k, I meant the quota (hope you didn't think I meant filing fees) ![]() |
OjaP: I think this is exactly what the bill is all about. But won't the issue of cancellation of the visa lottery be an impediment? It already is ... that's what killed the bill! Democrats vehemently opposed it. I'm also against it because of the selective nature of eligible institutions (only R1). The only thing on board right now is the comprehensive reform which looks good so far for STEM graduates and then for non-STEM, H-1B quota will be increased to about 200k (or something like that). |
Yvete: So how does it affect H1B transfers? I've not been interviewing for nothing! ![]() Marriage sef no too sure again! More and more guys are getting busted these days ...lol. But good thing you already got your H-1B before this mad rush. H-1B transfers are unlimited and are not affected by quota. You can always transfer anytime ![]() |
OjaP: Can you please explain to us how it is getting better? No where in your quoted article was "F-1" even mentioned.AFAIK, the STEM bill is dead! Same with all its other variants. The gang of 8 are looking to accommodate the provisions of those bills into the comprehensive immigration reform bill. And from what I gathered from their earlier deliberations, they seem to have a better deal for graduates with advanced STEM degrees. These graduates would be able to file for a conditional PR with the condition being that they continuing practicing in a STEM field throughout that time. |
Yvete: Hey Nice4Life, Where did you get this from? Is it current? It's current ... FY 2014 H-1B cap got exceeded in 5 days! Even at that they still have to use a lottery to select the actual 65,000 so not every app submitted within those 5 days will be successful. I hope this comprehensive immigration reform comes to fruition this year cos this whole H-1B thing has become oversubscribed! http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=5051f359827dd310VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=e7801c2c9be44210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD |
Yvete: When the name of a university sounds like an Indian Restaurant ... Olenu pa! |
OjaP: You had your first degree from the almighty "Rutgers" and think the V.O would bounce or give you a tough time? NO.Exactly my thoughts ... congrats sigilolu156 |
paparazzi1987: I really Get your stance, but the point there is that MUM offers financial aid for international student with a Paid internship btw $5K - $6K monthly..Now that sounds kinda fishy ... |
paparazzi1987: Bros i did both SAT(Math=690, verbal=480) and Toefl(223) back in 2003 and i know how hard i studied for the SAT.Now,that am already working,i don't think i will have time to sit for GRE again but i can easily re-write TOEFL.I understand your plight but of what use is the "nice financial package" if you do not get a visa? There's a few recognized universities that will waive the GRE for you if you got a good GPA and IT experience. Infact I know Cal State Fullerton and Oklahoma State Stillwater do not require the GRE for MS Computer Science. Minnesota State will waive the GRE for the MS IT program if you have a GPA above 3.0/4.0. No GRE/TOEFL + private no-name University I-20 doesn't look good before any VO. But then impossible is nothing! |
paparazzi1987: hello brothers and sisters,I'll be more worried about your chosen school. The name sounds somehow Did you choose it just to avoid taking any standardized tests? With a good undergraduate degree and strong programming experience you could easily have gotten into a more recognized program ... so why Maharishi? |
My fear is my school won't be able to provide it. Please I need Y'all advice.
Obama had a better proposal for us
