npn: are you a student of a Nigerian university? if you are then i think your studentship should be withdrawn, how can you not know what SSANU means. This is dumbest question i have ever heard, it means (Senior Staff Association Of Nigerian University). It is a union of all senior staffs(teach/non teaching)in Nigerian universities. So if they strike it means your [s]VC won't come to work and your HOD & all your senior lectures will not come to class.[/s] Aboki!

Teaching staff do not belong to SSANU.

For those looking for PhD programs with fellowship, check out the University of Louisville. Requirements for eligibility seem very reasonable (GRE => 60th percentile, GPA => 3.25)

djcrown: i dont have an international passport yet, does that mean that i am not qualify to write Toefl?

However, if you still want to take the paper exam at Aba on that May 04
you can still write it. All you'll need to do is get to Dority
International Secondary School, 19/21 Umuodu Abayi, Aba on the exam day.
And
don't forget to go along with your international passport, of course. wink

I think its mandatory identification for the exam. Go get one ASAP. You'll also need it for your application process.

Nairaland FBI: Dear house members,
I just gained admission into Illinois Institute of Technology to study I.T. I have everything intact but my only fear is that i have been refused a US Visa 7years ago when I was to come on vacation with my mum. Can that be a problem? The school is also paying half of my tuition through the department,i ave the tuition for a full year but i no dey too sure of my second year. can i save for the following year tuition from maybe hot jobs or on-campusjobs if i get one? Thank you.

How much is the tuition? On-campus jobs can only fetch you about $7-$13 an hour and you can only work 20hrs a week. Now you've got about 16 weeks the entire semester so do the math! As a graduate student you're better off chasing an assistantship with tuition waiver plus stipends. And its easier to get after your first semester.

A bill that offers automatic green card for F1 masters or Phd graduate will very hard to sell,Even if such bill is pass a company has to file for the green card .Otherwise offering green card to anyone with a masters or Phd from any school will create more problem for the us economy and defeat the purpose of the bill.Remeber how the indians have capitalize on the H1b?What I see is they might reduce the wait time it take to get the green card, some countries like India usually have a wait period of like 5 or 6years.I am very sure the bill will hasten the process of getting a green card and also reduce the restriction placed on spouses of potential green card or H1B holders.

Care to elucidate what problems you foresee?

US Immigration Reform Bill

So, I was reading the immigration reform bill proposed by the senate gang of 8 earlier today. It turns out that it is still meaningless to me.

The only thing I am concerned about is the F1 path to green card or citizenship which they weren't even clear on. They only proposed to increase the number of HI-B visas for STEM graduates. And that even requires a company to sponsor/file for you. Shouldn't we be given green card straight upon completion of our studies? I think the proposal is rubbish.

Source: http://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/686464/130417-immigration-bill-schumer.pdf

I share your sentiments bro ... hopes kinda dashed sad Obama had a better proposal for us tongue

Anyhoo, it seems we're back to square one ... dependency on employer. And they've even made it worse by requiring employers to pay significantly higher wages for H-1B hires. This might not go down well with small companies and the big ones too dey do shakara. Increment in H-1B quota did not even meet my expectation and going by what happened this year, 110k will not make much difference. However, pages 304 - 306 seem to hold some promise but it is not yet clear to me how that will be interpreted. Anybody wanna throw more light on those paragraphs?

olarwarlay: Please house, how long do You think receiving my i20 through regular mail will take?. Minnesota State Uni wants to send my i20 and says I have to choose btw regular and fedex. Fedex is charging $107 for the service and that looks kinda outrageous.
Or is there any other courier that could do school pick-up?. Pls, I need ur suggestions. Thanks.

Could take anywhere from 4 weeks to infinity! If you can afford it, use the eshipglobal service (via Fedex) 'cos its more reliable. Its that expensive because its a 3rd party service. Alternatively, if you have someone in the US, you can have the university mail the I-20 to them (via regular mail) and then have them (your US contact) do a direct Fedex mail to you (saves you a lot).

And should you want to go the other route (regular mail), make sure to use a P.O Box or PMB and then PRAY HARD tongue. NEVER use a house address!

That's great! It's better than nothing!

Yeah its actually very good considering the only eligibility is just being an int'l student! And then its very easy to maintain the scholarship throughout your program, you just need to participate in several activities on campus (like ASA, International Festival, community volunteer etc). Very good students go on to get real scholarships after their freshman year but these scholarships are highly competitive, most times requiring stellar GPA.

Grad students on the other hand don't have to earn any contribution hours, they only have to maintain a 3.0 GPA (whic

Caveat: It gets freaking cold here and by cold I really mean COLD! If you're not an indoor person and feel you can't survive very harsh 6-month winters, then MSU is a very bad deal for you tongue

OjaP: @ OP,

You better write the TOEFL on time if you truly love yourself. A cousin of mine was admitted into MSU Moorehead in 2012 to study communications. I warned her to write TOEFL but she never listened claiming she had A1 in WAEC and that the school waived TOEFL for her. To cut the long story short, she was denied twice. Her interview was like this.

V.O: Did you write any test?

Her: No, I had A1 in English, and my school waived TOEFL for me because of that.

V:O: I am sorry bla bla bla.

Need I say more?

@ scholarship,

The only thing I know about MSU is that they let you pay instate instead of out of state as an int'l student. Is that the scholarship you are talking about?

Very correct! The in-state tuition "scholarship" is automatic for incoming students but then they have to work for it by participating in socio-cultural events through out the semester where they must earn a fixed amount of "contribution hours" otherwise they lose the "scholarship". Great deal if you ask me wink

I understand. Most of these companies are not even ready to talk to you at all if you look or your name sound African. I have attended up to 12 interviews with some major and small oil companies in the past and one of the first set of questions they ask are,

Are you authorized to work?

Me: No, but...... (trying to play smart into selling OPT, CPT and H-1B)

Most of them told me in confidence that they don't sponsor and not ready to go through the stress when there are other eligible Americans or folks who are authorized to work. So cra**zy right

But with prayer and GOD, one may be lucky to get an internship. When you get that, work hard and make them like you, by the time you are done interning, they won't have any choice than to keep you (even when you haven't graduated). I have seen it happen.

Let's all work hard and pray - we will all make it.

Well said! Internships matter so much for us here cos that's the only experience US employers can really relate to (Dem no send your Naija experience). Like you said, lets all work hard and pray even harder. The coming months will be very critical in the life of all US non-immigrant visa holders with actual immigrant intentions tongue

Even with that, a company must be and/or willing to offer a job and sponsor you right?

It is finished!!!!!

Yeah ... that's the problem with H-1B. Its completely dependent on a company's willingness to file for you. By 200k, I meant the quota (hope you didn't think I meant filing fees) grin

I think this is exactly what the bill is all about. But won't the issue of cancellation of the visa lottery be an impediment?

......

It already is ... that's what killed the bill! Democrats vehemently opposed it. I'm also against it because of the selective nature of eligible institutions (only R1). The only thing on board right now is the comprehensive reform which looks good so far for STEM graduates and then for non-STEM, H-1B quota will be increased to about 200k (or something like that).

Can you please explain to us how it is getting better? No where in your quoted article was "F-1" even mentioned.

Also, can you or anyone please enlighten us about the STEM Bill?

Thank you.

AFAIK, the STEM bill is dead! Same with all its other variants. The gang of 8 are looking to accommodate the provisions of those bills into the comprehensive immigration reform bill. And from what I gathered from their earlier deliberations, they seem to have a better deal for graduates with advanced STEM degrees. These graduates would be able to file for a conditional PR with the condition being that they continuing practicing in a STEM field throughout that time.

Hey Nice4Life, Where did you get this from? Is it current?
I heard that the H1B 2014 might be through a lottery. I'll look for the article and put it up here.

It's current ... FY 2014 H-1B cap got exceeded in 5 days! Even at that they still have to use a lottery to select the actual 65,000 so not every app submitted within those 5 days will be successful. I hope this comprehensive immigration reform comes to fruition this year cos this whole H-1B thing has become oversubscribed!

Although, I have a good Job here with a nice pay but i really wish to move to masters level in computer science without
GRE or related exam...
As for the school Name, i beg no mind me..i chose them because they got nice financial package wink wink

I understand your plight but of what use is the "nice financial package" if you do not get a visa? There's a few recognized universities that will waive the GRE for you if you got a good GPA and IT experience. Infact I know Cal State Fullerton and Oklahoma State Stillwater do not require the GRE for MS Computer Science. Minnesota State will waive the GRE for the MS IT program if you have a GPA above 3.0/4.0.

No GRE/TOEFL + private no-name University I-20 doesn't look good before any VO. But then impossible is nothing!

I applied to Maharishi University of Management,IOWA for my Master's degree in computer science,
The school is willing to accept me based on my undergraduate grade,
programming experience and my score on their online programming test

which i still have the result with me.

The Financial document that i will be presenting belongs to my Brother

Please i need to know my Chance of getting visa without GRE and Toefl results

Thanx in advance

I'll be more worried about your chosen school. The name sounds somehow grin Did you choose it just to avoid taking any standardized tests? With a good undergraduate degree and strong programming experience you could easily have gotten into a more recognized program ... so why Maharishi?
