For those looking for PhD programs with fellowship, check out the University of Louisville. Requirements for eligibility seem very reasonable (GRE => 60th percentile, GPA => 3.25) Programs http://graduate.louisville.edu/sigs/degree-programs.html Funding http://graduate.louisville.edu/financial-support/grants_fellowships/University%20Fellowships 1 Like |

Nairaland FBI: Dear house members, How much is the tuition? On-campus jobs can only fetch you about $7-$13 an hour and you can only work 20hrs a week. Now you've got about 16 weeks the entire semester so do the math! As a graduate student you're better off chasing an assistantship with tuition waiver plus stipends. And its easier to get after your first semester. |

OjaP: I share your sentiments bro ... hopes kinda dashed Obama had a better proposal for us Anyhoo, it seems we're back to square one ... dependency on employer. And they've even made it worse by requiring employers to pay significantly higher wages for H-1B hires. This might not go down well with small companies and the big ones too dey do shakara. Increment in H-1B quota did not even meet my expectation and going by what happened this year, 110k will not make much difference. However, pages 304 - 306 seem to hold some promise but it is not yet clear to me how that will be interpreted. Anybody wanna throw more light on those paragraphs? |

olarwarlay: Please house, how long do You think receiving my i20 through regular mail will take?. Minnesota State Uni wants to send my i20 and says I have to choose btw regular and fedex. Fedex is charging $107 for the service and that looks kinda outrageous. Could take anywhere from 4 weeks to infinity! If you can afford it, use the eshipglobal service (via Fedex) 'cos its more reliable. Its that expensive because its a 3rd party service. Alternatively, if you have someone in the US, you can have the university mail the I-20 to them (via regular mail) and then have them (your US contact) do a direct Fedex mail to you (saves you a lot). And should you want to go the other route (regular mail), make sure to use a P.O Box or PMB and then PRAY HARD . NEVER use a house address! |

ferdimako: Yeah its actually very good considering the only eligibility is just being an int'l student! And then its very easy to maintain the scholarship throughout your program, you just need to participate in several activities on campus (like ASA, International Festival, community volunteer etc). Very good students go on to get real scholarships after their freshman year but these scholarships are highly competitive, most times requiring stellar GPA. Grad students on the other hand don't have to earn any contribution hours, they only have to maintain a 3.0 GPA (whic Caveat: It gets freaking cold here and by cold I really mean COLD! If you're not an indoor person and feel you can't survive very harsh 6-month winters, then MSU is a very bad deal for you |
Travel / Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by webstradamus: 4:42pm On Apr 16, 2013 |
OjaP: @ OP, Very correct! The in-state tuition "scholarship" is automatic for incoming students but then they have to work for it by participating in socio-cultural events through out the semester where they must earn a fixed amount of "contribution hours" otherwise they lose the "scholarship". Great deal if you ask me 1 Like |

OjaP: Well said! Internships matter so much for us here cos that's the only experience US employers can really relate to (Dem no send your Naija experience). Like you said, lets all work hard and pray even harder. The coming months will be very critical in the life of all US non-immigrant visa holders with actual immigrant intentions |

OjaP: Yeah ... that's the problem with H-1B. Its completely dependent on a company's willingness to file for you. By 200k, I meant the quota (hope you didn't think I meant filing fees) |

OjaP: It already is ... that's what killed the bill! Democrats vehemently opposed it. I'm also against it because of the selective nature of eligible institutions (only R1). The only thing on board right now is the comprehensive reform which looks good so far for STEM graduates and then for non-STEM, H-1B quota will be increased to about 200k (or something like that). |

OjaP: AFAIK, the STEM bill is dead! Same with all its other variants. The gang of 8 are looking to accommodate the provisions of those bills into the comprehensive immigration reform bill. And from what I gathered from their earlier deliberations, they seem to have a better deal for graduates with advanced STEM degrees. These graduates would be able to file for a conditional PR with the condition being that they continuing practicing in a STEM field throughout that time. |

Yvete: It's current ... FY 2014 H-1B cap got exceeded in 5 days! Even at that they still have to use a lottery to select the actual 65,000 so not every app submitted within those 5 days will be successful. I hope this comprehensive immigration reform comes to fruition this year cos this whole H-1B thing has become oversubscribed! http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=5051f359827dd310VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=e7801c2c9be44210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD |

paparazzi1987: I understand your plight but of what use is the "nice financial package" if you do not get a visa? There's a few recognized universities that will waive the GRE for you if you got a good GPA and IT experience. Infact I know Cal State Fullerton and Oklahoma State Stillwater do not require the GRE for MS Computer Science. Minnesota State will waive the GRE for the MS IT program if you have a GPA above 3.0/4.0. No GRE/TOEFL + private no-name University I-20 doesn't look good before any VO. But then impossible is nothing! |

paparazzi1987: hello brothers and sisters, I'll be more worried about your chosen school. The name sounds somehow Did you choose it just to avoid taking any standardized tests? With a good undergraduate degree and strong programming experience you could easily have gotten into a more recognized program ... so why Maharishi? 1 Like |
