aroy1: You should be aware that though Hawaii is a state in the USA, it is not part of the continental United States. It is like a small country on its own with her language, customs, traditions, and so on. That said, the state offers a lot of opportunities like others and students can really have lots of wonderful and enjoyable times there.

Well said!

@stuhporh, cost of living in Hawaii is quite high compared to most major US cities. It's a chain of islands disconnected from the rest of the US. Little wonder many online merchants often exclude Hawaii from delivery. Just curious, what made you choose Hawaii? You might still find those things in the contiguous US.

bodeplot: @ALL... please i nid ur advice, univ of nebraska lincoln gave my frnd admission for PhD into Fall 2013, but with no funding, however, they said the univ doesnt have funding for graduate students dis 2013/14 session and he can accept or defer for 2yrs..pls, what do suggest he shud do e.g forget it,defer or go, and is there any possibilities that they will give funding the next session. thanks in advance

Tell your friend to defer while looking out for other programs that have funding for Spring 2014 (I believe most PhD admissions for Fall 2013 must have been concluded by now). You may call me Baba Ijebu or what not but I strongly believe there is no point paying for a PhD here even if you can afford it grin grin grin There's just too much research money out there waiting to be spent!

I was only giving him examples of their recognized exams. His school requirements will tell him which of them to write. Besides if you do GRE/GMAT and pass very well dont you think the VO would be impressed that an Undergrad passed a graduate exam very well. He might just give him visa without asking any question againYou never can tell buddie. grin

A prospective undergrad has no business whatsoever taking the GRE/GMAT in lieu of SAT/TOEFL ... the VO will not be impressed if they do! The student will only come off as confused; not knowing their left from their right. Just my thoughts ... I may be wrong though smiley

Oh yea? Never really fancied being a part of their "circle" till I realized that they share past exam questions and stuff. Then I ushered myself in. smiley The familiarity just started this semester anyways.

Hope you find favor with the internships and job hunt. Thats all my resume used to be about; internships here and there. You need to attend more career fairs too. By the way, be willing to start with small companies that sponsor before you worry about bigger companies. The transition will get easier overtime.

You gat jokes bro ... grin

But seriously have you tried ITS, Academic Computing Center or Library? They're usually the highest employers of CS/IT majors. Might be very competitive but grad students (with prior work experience) usually have an edge. And how about summer internship? Hope you've secured one or are at least close to securing one. You'd be amazed at the ginormous opportunities out there on Dice/Indeed/SimplyHired (hope am not be preaching to the choir here wink).

slimmy05: played too safe, I don't get? Pls explain further. Its Texas A&M, college station

Since you already applied to College Station then that's ambitious enough. Its usually good to add at least one "safety" school in case you don't make it into your top choices (in your case, Texas A&M).

slimmy05: House, I applied to Northern Arizona University, Eastern Michigan University and Texam a & m. MA applied communication, MA Communication studies. Please, I hope its a better school. I still awaits admission decision though. I wrote GRE and have told the house my score.

Your choices are okay but I think you kinda played too safe though. You should easily get into NAU/EMich with your profile. Which of the Texas A&M's?

slimmy05: Today was really terrible, woke up yesteday with conjuctivities (apolo) and had GRE exam today. My eyes were very heavy, but I give God the praise. I was able to fail, I scored 153 in Quantitative and also scored 157 in my verbal, I know its a poor score, but its better that 0. embarassed

Your scores aint that bad ... Q-153 => Q-680 and V-157 => V-560 on the old scale. You didn't do too bad (1200+ is generally decent). What programs are you looking at?

If the bolded is the case, then it is NOT an affidavit! If you want an affidavit, go to court. Else just use a letter of financial support.

I contacted GRE and I was given one exception voucher after I have faxed my police report of loss of international passport. Pls what is this for. I want to know the way forward. Please, anybody with advice. My 185usd cannot go like that. I don't have money with me again. Pls Yvete, imperiouxx I need you guys response on this

Dunno really but I'd assume the voucher should allow you reschedule the exam without having to make a new payment. How did you get the voucher? Email? What other info did it contain?

flynbird: Guys. Been pretty busy and studying for Toefl.. I just paid WES $204 today for course to course evaluation with GTb master card and they confirmed the payment instantly and updated my status from "Documents Received/Awaiting Payment" to "Reviewing". Only for me to check few hours later to see my status CANCELLED. What could be wrong? Has anyone ever experienced such before? I waited for the delivery of my result first before making payment just to be sure. I've emailed them right away!
I sent my result to them 3weeks back and then sent my transcript a week after sending my results. They got my result first and then hopefully they should get my transcript in a few days time say wednesday because I used NIPOST and sent it last week monday. I just hope its the transcript on transit that's causing this and not something else oh!

Good thing you've emailed them. There's not much you can do but wait for their response ...

Yvete: Wow Webstradamus, say you want $3,000, you will purchase 30 cereals seperately to get $3000 cashback with 30 receipts? grin grin

The best time to utilize this strategy at Walmart is in the day because those self-checkout lines are soooo long at night. My fear is that she may not even be able to get cash off the ATM with the "orange card" Lolz, but Walmart it is!

If you need $3K, then 30 cereals (or whatever you need) it is grin Well, I never got to the level of 3k but a friend once got $3500 cash back in one day! He had to checkout 35 items individually not giving a damn about who ever was waiting on the line behind him ... imagine that! My "SendLessNess" no reach that one sha. And you're right about the best time to do this, Walmart is quieter in the day.

lloolll i like this your idea of withdrawing money without fees. can i withdraw as much as $1000 in one day becos im expecting a large sum of money to pay for something. God bless

Sure ... just buy at least 10 items. Checkout one item at a time and collect $100 cash back per transaction. If the cash gets exhausted in any particular machine, move on to the next! No look person face O! You are not committing any crime. It's your money grin

Isobutylene: Hi guys,I really appreciate you guys for providing valuable information on this thread. Now, I need advice from guys already in the States. I have been admitted into the University of South Carolina, Lousiana State University and University of Houston for a graduate program (PhD), with full tuition waver and assistantship. Now, I would like to know the best of these 3 in terms of cost of living, life in general (i.e.boring or lively) and relaxation centers. I do not trust my findings on the internet so I need a first-hand information from my fellow Nigerians. Thanks in anticipation.

Congrats ... it's HOUSTON all the way! But what program are you going for? Shouldn't that also be a factor? Abi na only faaji matter to you grin

Mamacita007: Has anybody tried to withdraw large sum of money from their GTB naira mastercard in the US? If not do you know a cheap way of sending money to the US from naija becos the last time i received money through GTB to my american account they charged us over $40 commission just for a small amount and i still paid the bank another $25 over here. if they deposit the money in my GTB account in naija can i use my card to cash it here? Thanks.

ATM withdrawal or Bank wire is a no-no for me cos the charges are ridiculous! Cheapest way is to do Walmart cashback grin Use Self Checkout and make multiple transactions, getting cashback each time. Downside is that you can only get a max of $100 per transaction so you need to do alot of transactions depending on how much you want to get. I easily "withdraw" $1000+ from one shopping session by checking out each item individually while collecting $100 cashback for that transaction grin. The only charge you would incur is the usual N100 per transaction (as if you were withdrawing the money from another bank's ATM in Naija).

But wait a minute, do you know you can swipe the GTB card for any card payment you will normally make with a US card? I do groceries and other shopping, pay rent/utilities, fees, etc with the card so why carry cash?

I'm replying you because you said you're starting your visa application immediately and it won't be nice to watch you fail.

Quick question, how do you know a good school and what factors influence your decision to attend Herzing?
When you google a school and the likes of ITT Tech, Everest pops up, that's not a good sign. Did you even google this school? A quick google search reveals this
Overall Poor to fair
A university in one building ? No wonder nobody respects this crap hole
Disliked: Price, Teachers, Alumni

Do you really wanna do this? I think you should trash the I-20s, write TOEFL & SAT, choose good schools and start the process all over. If your dogged about it, you might get lucky ... come back to testify!

Just4mide:
@snazzy girl please my conditional acceptance letter and the 1-20 has been mail to me it is written there that "this student has been conditionally accepted to herzing uni pending the completion of his English proficiency at wesli"so please should I go to embassy without it since its already written on my document or I should take along my precious toefl result with score 45 since I would still complete an English school USA ?so what do you advice now?ALSO please can I have your yahoo ID or Facebook name so I to seek more advice from you

Did you really miss Yvete's response or you deliberately chose to ignore it? She just told you the bitter truth but I guess it didn't sound good to you so you're looking for workarounds. Inasmuch as I say hate to tell you this, your case does not look good right now. "Precious TOEFL" score of 45? Conditional acceptance to a one-building university? Guy, take a chill pill and re-strategize. Enroll in SAT/TOEFL classes and register/take both exams when you feel confident enough to do so. Next look for real Universities and apply to a few of them that meet your academic objectives, financial capability and other factors. I know it might sound to you like I'm yarning opata but the harsh reality is that you aint ready to make that trip to the embassy ... at least not now.
