spikedcylinder:Chimamanda Adicihie writes literary fiction. "happily ever after" and "feel good" books are usually commercial fiction. chinua achebe is another example of a literary author. "Things Fall Apart" had a really confused/absent ending. but it made me think. it's literary books that are usually awarded book prizes. _____ In general, fiction is divided into literary fiction and commercial fiction (also called mainstream fiction). There aren't any hard and fast definitions for one or the other, but there are some basic differences, and those differences affect how the book is read, packaged and marketed. Literary fiction is usually more concerned with style than commercial fiction. Literary fiction also usually stresses characterization more deeply and is paced more slowly than commercial fiction. Literary fiction usually centers around a timeless, complex theme and rarely has a "happy ending." Good examples of literary fiction are books by Toni Morrison and John Updike. Commercial fiction, on the other hand, is faster paced, with a "stronger" plot line (more events, higher stakes, more dangerous situations). Characterization is generally not as central to the story. The theme is also very obvious and the language in not as complex. The biggest difference between literary and commercial fiction is that editors expect to make a substantial profit from selling a commercial book (not always true of literary fiction). Likewise, audiences for commercial fiction are larger than those for literary fiction. Tom Clancy, John Grisham and Stephen King are all prime examples of commercial fiction authors. One of the easiest ways to determine whether your work is literary or commercial is to ask yourself, "Will my book be assigned reading in college English classes, or will it be sold in grocery stores?" --Jerry Jackson Jr., assistant editor, Writer's Digest http://www.writersdigest.com/qadisplay.asp?id=1342&secondarycategory=Scriptwriting+Subhome+Page |

If you are refering to the pilgrims who left England to "discover" the new world then you would have your history upside down.the pilgrims didn't really leave england to discover the new world. the first settlers did. the pilgrims came after first staying at the netherlands i think. but they came to virginia only after the first settlers were already in new england. the first settlers weren't pilgrims just businessmen i should say. lol. so no, i don't have my history upside down. good to see were on the first page for the first time in history. lol ![]() |
islam won't be a problem if it's practiced personally. christianity was the problem when masses were leaving england for religious freedom from strict christianity laws christianity was also a problem when the puritans were holding their witch trials and what other horrible biblical laws they used to govern their society. religion should be personal. when it interferes with how a govt is ruled, then that society will have problems. esp in todays world where many people of the same country are multi religious and the world is becoming "globalized" the way one person practices a religion isn't the way BBC news on turkey and please don't tell me to shut up. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/3192647.stm Because it was CLEARLY nothing to do with religion but politics!thanks for agreeing with me. |
https://www.ecards-gallery.com/ecards/birthday/birthday208/happy-birthday.gif sometimes i wonder why nigeria has a different time zone. |
is Hazara the group that is (/used to be) most discriminated against? |
it looks kind of strange on white people. lol but that was the least ugly one i found on google. i couldn't find black people. |
i'm a woman rights advocate plus, it doesn't really serve any real useful purpose in today's society. i think there's a thread about it anyways, back to topic. |
Tiptronic:the 50/50, north/south divide is pretty accurate but a simplified version. let's just say that there are three major ethnic groups in Nigeria: Hausa (muslim), Igbo (christian) and Yoruba (christian and muslim mix) hausas live in the north while yorubas and igbos stay in the south. so, while the north is muslim, the south has a mixture of muslims and christians with mostly christians. the southern muslims are usually yoruba. i think this explains why christians and muslims get along in the south: they are from the same ethnic group/ have more in common. the religious (north vs south) clash in nigeria might as well have some ethnic (igbo vs hausa) undertones to it. hmm i never thought about this. lol how is it in Afghanistan? are there different ethnic groups also? i read Kite Runner. the author is from Afghanistan so i picked up some things about Afghanistan culture/ society from it but i've forgotten most of the story now. lol |
it's cute on most people https://www.bigskyfilmfest.org/images/selections2006/les_blank/gap_tooth_woman%20.jpg |
Tiptronic:where i lived in Nigeria, lagos to be exact, christians and muslims got along very well. I grew up with them and was best friends with some of them. many Nigerians definitely are very pleasant people. where are you from? i don't think that most Nairaland users or nigerians have problems with muslims in general It's just that the muslim haters are usually the loud ones. *cough* davidylan *cough* joking plus the whole terrorism/ iraq war issue has given a bad reputation to muslims throughout the globe. which i think is unfair. |
davidylan:you're only just repeating my point. apparently, if one's political ideology is based on the quran then your political blunders will also be blamed on the quran. also, the middle east wouldn't be comprised of islamic states if somebody or some "body" didn't advocate it. obviously. What of Nigeria where there is a clear constitutional separation of church and state? Why is it no different from the islamic republic of Iran?there is no really clear constitutional separation of church and state in Nigeria. there is the sharia law and a sharia police in the north. religion clearly controls the states societal laws etc. and not a secular govt. Turkey is the only islam country i know that has a clearly secular govt. If only the muslim countries in the middle east can secularize their governments. |
well that sucks |
lmao. just because one muslim commited suicide, she's asking if all muslims are ready to commit suicide. that really was stupid. lol Tiptronic, all the hate words i've seen on this site targeted against muslims is not even funny anymore. how do you feel about it? 'cause i'm sure i'll feel bad if i was muslim. i'm not even muslim and i still feel bad that it's happening. |
Seun's 25 today!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!! we love you, admin. lol i wish you many more years to come |
babyosisi:polygamy is definitely a bad part of African culture that should be eliminated. our clothing on the other hand, i'm proud if it. anyways, yar'adua's agbada is still fly ![]() |
does this mean that we're disqualified? |
well that's because here where i live, there's a separation between the church and state. we all know what it was like in the old testament where the societal laws were "directly from God." that's what sharia law reminds me of. there isn't a line separating religion and politics/govt in the middle east. that's why all the bad gets blamed on the religion. some people will never understand that i'm sure. ![]() |
fabulosboy:hey!! davidylan also hates muslims. you got yourself some company. if your christian, remember "love your neighbor as yourself." and make sure to approach life with an open mind. ![]() |

as much as I dislike sharia, as i believe that religion should be a personal choice, you guys are (intentionally) misinterpreting the article. |
mazaje:thank you! tboy1:lmao ![]() IDINRETE:ok. i see your point then. ![]() my point was: the guy was having problems when he did what he did. the article said he was a lonely orphan and had no relatives etc no sane/normal Muslim will commit suicide because they can't memorize the books of the Koran. no normal muslim will try to undertake that task in the first place unless they were in a strange situation/ problem (ex. Malcolm X trying to memorize the dictionary because he was in prison etc.) i hope you see my point. |
IDINRETE:that man doesn't represent the entire population of muslims in the globe. he represents himself and no one else. there are thousands of muslims who don't know the koran from head to toe that will ever think of commiting suicide (but you wouldn't know that 'cause you have problems) if a nigerian is 419 doesn't mean you'll go asking "nigerians, are you ready to dupe me" it is with this same mentality that ignorant people have that lead them to believe that all nigerians are robbers or that all blacks are criminals or that all muslims are suicidal or whatever other prejudices people have against other people who are different from them. the man said he commited suicide mainly because he was an orphan. why aren't you asking "ORPHANS ARE YOU READY TO COMMIT SUICIDE?" that comment will be offensive to orphans and it's the same logic with muslims. i certainly am not asking you for an apology. hell no. i'm christian not muslim. but your post really is offensive to many muslims (i have muslim friends and i grew up around christians as well as muslims) Yes, im surprised that he committed suicide for the reason of his inability to memorise the koran that is why I asked the questioneither you're lying or you need to go take a psychology class or both. the guy who shot several students and himself at Virginia tech did it because he didn't like "rich people" apart from the fact that he was depressed and lonely. and why aren't you admitting that the muslim guy killed himself mainly because he was an orphan and lonely.(imagine, no relatives to claim his body etc doesn't that ring any bell to your mind that the guy must have been depressed?) do you actually go about wondering if muslims are ready to commit suicide? strange people that walk the earth nowadays. |
the guy said the main reason he tried to commit suicide was because he was an orphan and had no relatives. the police couldn't even trace people to take his body and had to bury him (many people including the Virginia tech guy commit suicide for this exact reason -loneliness) he cited memorizing the koran as a secondary reason. the reason he probably undertook this ordeal was 'cause he was lonely and had nowhere to turn to. you don't see too many people trying to memorize religious books, whether bible or koran. the other thread on this exact same topic: "muslims, are you ready to commit suicide?" was offensive to muslims. |
IDINRETE:you're stupid. the lonely orphan has no family, friends whatsoever. nobody was there with him throughout his life and you are surprised that he commited suicide. plus, memorizing the koran was cited as a secondary reason. did anyone asked him why he was trying to memorize the koran? this topic is offensive to muslims IMO. asking them if they're ready to commit suicide just because a depressed guy did. well i just heard about a christian guy who took his life 'cause he was lonely/ had no friends. i don't really know to what extent he was religious but his memorial was a couple of months ago |
anyways, did this guy leave a suicide note or something? what's the source to this news? people should have recognized signs etc before he took his life. thank God the guy who shot kids at Virginia Tech wasn't Muslim. apparently, he did it because he was depressed. if he were muslim, depression/ frustration doesn't count. lol it's his nasty religion that forced him to do it. sometimes i wonder if people are unconsciously prejudiced. |
debosky:i was referring to the person who said "this is what the koran is doing to people" 'cause the koran definitely doesn't say "kill yourself if you can't memorize me in 8 years" it is very shameful to undergo such studies and fail, especially for a hard core northern muslim. its like an aspiring chemist not being able to recognise elements of the periodic table after 8 years of study -so you're telling me that if given a time frame of 8 years, you'll be able to memorize the bible from the first verse of genesis to the last verse of revelation? keep in mind you're an ordinary human not an einstein clone. can your pastor do this? you can't compare this ordeal to chemist recognizing elements. that's a task they teach to middle school kids. utter failure and frustration drive people to extreme ends.feeling of utter failure and frustration drive people to extreme ends. there are some people who have it realllly bad and don't commit suicide because they feel optimistic, encouraged etc and there are those that have it good (or at least it seems like it to onlookers) but they commit suicide 'cause they feel like a failure. |
OMG people commit suicide all the freaking time. why do you guys have to assume that his religion caused him to commit suicide? ![]() people do it 'cause life disappoint them etc (the guy was most likely lonely and had no life or probably having problems, like most people who commit suicide.) even if he succeeded in learning the koran, it will probably have led him to take on another quest that was impossible for him to achieve. probably was just looking for some meaning to life. poor soul. i grief for his family. if they had noticed early signs of depression in their kid. lol i actually just heard about a suicide case. and the guy involved was christian. they just recently had his memorial. Esss:thank you!!! actually reminds me of the pastor in the 70s i think that led a revival and poisoned and killed the hundreds of people that followed him on the revival including himself. |
