No tpbm knows i <3 Corneille |
awwww Lizzy. ![]() it's probably because i only listened to it once. it's a good song though. I guess i'll have to listen to it again then. |
rikkyjen:Yay. I'm not the only one. It's great but not greeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. IMO. |
I'm sorry! Your brother's taking the exams. Not you. see what happens when i'm not thinking straight. ![]() |
I'm currently enrolled in some SAT prep class. It's pretty cheap but not as comprehensive as those expensive ones ( Princeton, Kaplan e.t.c) but who cares. you learn basically the same thing. I'll advice you to take the Practice SAT (psat) first to see where you stand and what to improve on. you could get a study guide for cheap (about $15-20) and stay commited to it. there are some websites with practice exams only i'm too lazy to start compiling. (type in "practice SAT" in google search) and you could go on www.collegeboard.com, sign up and they'll send you a practice question in your e-mail everyday (not that i actually read mine )I'm taking mine in May and for some reason i feel very inclined to do really well on it. If only the adcoms didn't put too much weigh on those stupid exams. It's all good though. goodluck on your exams. wish me luck too! ![]() oh yeah. i didn't answer your question did I? No, i don't know where people take SAT prep courses at in Lagos. Sorry. (when are you taking the exams BTW? May? June?) |
Oh it's nothing much. Just hay fever allergies (it gets really worse in spring and summer). Thanks anyways That's not really my e-mail address. I set that account up because you guys were bugging me to get yahoo messanger but then I never went on it and finally fogot my password so i just totally ignored it. why does this thing change "by the way" to "between"? ![]() |
Fimmy:Fimmy, I agree with every comment in your post except your opinion that "muslims should have done more than that." Those cartoon images and the remarks of Flemming Rose were humiliating, condescending and indirectly racist to be exact. I think that those muslims who boycotted Danish goods and protested peacefully should be applauded. Those other extreme muslims who think murdering and destroying is the best way to retaliate should be ashamed of themselves. One of the cartoons showed prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban. Why do stuff to encourage these wrong stereotypes. Freedom of speech is no excuse for offending a religion or culture I personally think Islam is a religion of peace and most muslims are indeed non-violent but there are the extreme muslim radicals and those cartoonists who are wrecking the image. I see your a faithful muslim and are affended by the action of the jyllands-Posten in Denmark but I really don't see what Nigerian Christians have to do with it. ![]() . |
doing stuff. I basically don't have free time anymore. I've been really busy lately and the only reason i'm free today is because i'm sick (it's not that horrible even though my mom's scared) and can't go to school. |

Hota made a long post. haha. ![]() where in the world have you been btw? ![]() |
I agree with most of you that it's discriminatory but I don't see how minorities are going to be represented in those colleges without it. If affirmative action cease to be practiced, the amount of African Americans and Latinos in prestigious higher Institutions will reduce dramatically and therefore increase stupid stereotypes like one I read on this site not long agothat blacks are dumber than whites. Research shows benefits of affirmative action Donald MacLeod Tuesday June 7, 2005 Without affirmative action the number of African-American and Hispanic students going to elite US universities would plummet, and their places would be taken by Asian, not white, applicants, according to Princeton University researchers. Although affirmative action to award places to black students has been whittled away by legal challenges, American universities are still entitled to take race into account as one factor alongside SAT test scores when making admissions decisions, a supreme court judgment involving the University of Michigan held last year. After looking at more than 124,000 applicants to elite universities, Thomas J Espenshade and Chang Y Chung concluded that ignoring race in admissions would result in dramatic declines in the number of African-Americans and Hispanics. They also looked at athletes and so-called "legacy" applicants, whose parents are alumni or have made donations, who are predominantly white. They concluded their numbers were so small they did not displace many minority candidates. "We're trying to put these admission preferences in context so people understand that lots of students, including those with SAT scores above 1,500, are getting a boost," said Prof Espenshade. "The most important conclusion is the negative impact on African-American and Hispanic students if affirmative action practices were eliminated." According to the study, published in the Social Science Quarterly, acceptance rates for African American candidates would fall from 33.7% to 12.2%, a decline of almost two-thirds, while the acceptance rate for Hispanic applicants would almost be cut in half, from 26.8% to 12.9%. In the longer term the effect would be even greater because such students might be deterred from applying at all, they argued. "If admitting such small numbers of qualified African-American and Hispanic students reduced applications and the yield from minority candidates in subsequent years, the effect of eliminating affirmative action at elite universities on the racial and ethnic composition of enrolled students would be magnified beyond the results presented here," the authors wrote. Removing consideration of race would have little effect on white students - their acceptance rate would rise by only 0.5 percentage points. Asian students would fill nearly four out of every five places in the admitted class not taken by African-American and Hispanic students. The study looked at elite university applicants' SAT scores, race, sex, citizenship, athletic ability and legacy in combination with their admission decision. but then when you look at the other side of it, most minorities could do just as good (i mean their profiles) if they have the advantages e.t.c. for example, an upper middle class white whose parents are English professors or who attended expensive SAT prep classes will do a lot better than an Hispanic whose parents speak little or no English and has not enough time for study because of a part time job. I don't think the white kid deserves any better just because of the higher scores. |
those crazy commercials. they're talking about some totally different thing like work-outs e.t.c and randomly you hear the "i just saved a bunch of money part" like we actually care. the one i found hilarious is where some squirrels, geiko or whatever small animals they were. They'll go in the middle of the road whenever a car passes by and perform a crazy stupid dance if they don't get hit. it sort of satirizes people who hit other people's car on purpose or feign injuries in order to collect insurance money. i still think the pepto-bismol commercial is one of the funniest ones. |
i don't have problems with it probably because i don't speak in it. the only thing i like about it is how fast and easy it is (to type i mean). |
affirmative action http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affirmative_Action <-- for a more accurate definition: It's when ethnic minorities get an edge in college admissions e.t.c just because they're minorities. Colleges say the purpose is to promote diversity e.t.c because blacks and hispanics do poorer than whites academically and these minorities therefore do not get a chance in prestigious institutions. Consequently, the institutions are most of the time "all white." But many of the white people in my school think affirmative action is discrimination and some minority individuals (a lot actually) think it's shameful. I on the other hand agree with it. So, does anyone apart from me agree with it? Me and my friend were discussing it the other day and she said it wasn't fair how she did better than me on the PSATs but I got recruited a lot more. she's upper-middle class white by the way. |
cheekee:that's my techno song! Toy soldiers by Martika |
Hotstepper:Let's not even go near Bush's speeches. The guy needs some serious help with his issues. Seriously! I'm still trying to understand why anyone in their right senses voted for him! ![]() |
@ Ynot, when my dad went to Nigeria last year, he took both passports along with him. They'll ask for both not one (and maybe stamp both of them, i guess )you have to present both passports. you can't show them just one. can you? |
abuguy64:Oh. i get you. If you live too far off from the passport office, just mail them your forms and photos and they'll in turn mail you your passport in about 2-6wks. that's the "American way" i guess ![]() |
misslady:I'm curious. what's the "nigerian way"? ![]() |
we did learn Africa to be a continent and not a country so not all Black Americans are dumbfounded about the difference. It's all about what is taught to you and if you embrace it to be truth.
Exactly. to tell the truth, when i was younger i used to think all Asians were Chinese or Japanese (and I'm sure many people think that way too. You know from the books you've read e.t.c that all Asians aren't Chinese but you just associate Asia with China and Japan for some reason) until I came to my High school-- it's very diverse-- and met a whole lot of people from different parts of Asia. I still call Hispanics "Spanish" sometimes even though i know they are not Spaniards (most Americans and black american and even some Hispanics themselves are guilty of this too). It's all about what is taught to you Either they probably weren't taught that Africa was a continent or they were misinformed or maybe the only Africans they've met were from the same country. We need to teach them. that's all. |
i guess i can't complain about mine since i'm not paying for it or anything. ![]() it's saved me a lot too (not dramatically like that). |
oasis:People don't apply for "Dual Citizenship" If your a Nigerian citizen and you want to become an American citizen, just apply for American Citizenship (Naturalization) and you automatically hold a dual citizenship with US and Nigeria. On the other hand, if your a US citizen and want to become a Nigerian citizen, you'll have to give up your American citizenship and won't be allowed to own a dual citizenship. (meaning, if you were born in the US and aren't married to a Nigerian or have Nigerian parents/grandparents, you can't be a Nigerian citizen without giving up your American citizenship) when people r travelling 4rom America 2 Nigeria, they use Nigerian passport and when they r returning, they use Americani have no clue which one people use. Hotstepper's statement ^^ makes sense though. to apply for citizenship, you have to be in the US for 5 years (2 years if your married to a US citizen) You don't have to apply if your under 18 (i got mine automatically through my parents). It doesn't appear as though dual citizenship is common.i know someone who was refused financial aid (for college, loans) because she didn't have her citizenship. I think that's more important than "cost of visa." |
because we don't want to believe that they are lies? because we want them to be the truth? how many letters are in this question? |
My top French names (boys and girls): Corneille Michel Noël Adrien Aimée Adèle Océania Christiane Yves Isabelle I like them even though some people think they're ugly. ![]() |

retro:i like black history month. even though i don't think it matters anyhow. It's in february not because february has the shortest days but because Abraham Lincoln (emancipation proclamation) , Frederick Douglass (obvious) , and Langston Hughes (Harlem writer)'s birthdays fall in the same month. ------ asking why there isn't a white history month is just like asking why there aren't white colleges! i can't stand when some whites say stuff like "why does there have to be "Black colleges" and there can't be "white colleges"? some people just can't see stuff. |
my cousin gets called that. we don't because we're sort of skinny in my family. i'm not spoilt and i don't act spoilt. i'm not american either. I'm FULL Nigerian ![]() i guess you could tell your mom you don't like being called that (aje butter) maybe she'll stop. . . make a AARGHHH face when anyone calls you that next time Lol.and yeah. if your mom's friend calls you aje butter. make sure you call her kids aje butter the next time you go visit them and see how she feels about it. |
Kokscity:hmmm. . . |
i confess my NL addiction's been cured. i hope permenently. |
i guess the man loves his job . . .one would think trying to lead a nation like Nigeria was hard. well, if the president wants to stay for a third term means his job's easy and he loves and feels comfortable at it. it can also mean he's not working hard enough because if he was, he would be working so hard he'll pray day and night for retirement. and, he needs a face lift or something. i don't see why Stella should be going for some surgery when it's actually her husband who needs it. who knows he might decide to go do a face work and "die for Nigeria" in the process. at least he'll make history for being the second president apart from Abacha to die (naturally?) in office. That's like a curse considering what type of a president Abacha was. |
