Hipsofagoddess: Do I really need to understudy or just get an agronomist You need to understudy. Just get a farm that do poultry, spend a month. Get someone with a tomato farm and work a month. You will have good knowledge of what you want to do and if you wish to continue. Even if you finally get an agronomist, you will have a first hand knowledge of your business and be able to correct your workers. |

ExLaidback: People on this thread don't really go through results. They just check the PAT and that's it. I'm not of a Finance and Accounts background but some of the basics are there to read for whoever is interested.
Like has been posted before, which is not news, FX will be this biggest player on most bank results this year. FX gains/losses and loan losses
GTB (the almighty bank) in it's Q2 had to add FX translation gains to it's PAT (instead of under OCI as ZIB and UBA did or else it would have declared a loss for the 3 months ended June) due to very high Loan impairment charges. That's one of the most stable banks. FCMB did the same thing. So these are banks wit good NET FX Assets.
Now imagine banks with Net FX liabilities (rather than Assets), also having high loan loss to deal with this year. My take is this: for any bank whose Q3 you are expecting, just check the Q2. If there was a considerable increase in it's loan loss therein don't expect anything too fantastic in Q3. If even worse, it has a net FX liabilities rather than Assets, you might even want to sell because there'd be nothing to cushion the rise in loan losses (except cutting down drastically on operating expenses, I guess).
Or what do you think? Most of us are aware of the component of these bank,s result but short term trading is the order of the day. I still make a N4 gain on the same GTB after releasing their H2 result and interim dividend while I made a loss on Zenith with a far better cleaner result with an almost non-existent fx-related gains in its PBT. You will wonder while folks still buy Skye Bank even with all their bad news and still make money, same goes for FBN and their loan portfolio. Thats the wonder of NSE. |

ALISMILE: The jaw-dropping corruption in the judiciAry if unearthed will take the nation by storm. Criminals plead with police and EFcc to quickly arraigne in court because they re sure if they can't get their way at the Police station they will surely be let off the hook in court. Judges after collecting bribes and letting criminals off the hook hip the blame on the police and EFCC citing lack of diligent prosecution. This crack down on corrupt judges is long overdue. Principled and impeccable judges ve nothing fear. Wailers can wail to high heavens for all I care. There is nothing like principled and impeccable judges in Nigeria. bethnals: Well thats what i want to do with this 1 million learn. But where does one go? is it to attend one of these seminars or what.
Where actually do you find the information on how to buy/lease land? Does government lease land to farmers? If so how do you access it. What are the breakdown input costs i.e. how would you spend the 1 million naira? what is the potential output? etc etc
Money is the relatively simple part. The harder part is knowledge and a practical plan.
Are you involved in the farming business? Start with the internet, agric sites, nairaland etc. There are enough information on Nairaland alone on different agric biz if you can take your time and read. Choose an aspect to focus on. After that, you look for farms around you that you can work/train with them for some months. From your training, you will know your inputs, markets, strategy, environment, output and be able to develop your business plan for your project. U will get knowledge by reading wide and experience by working for some months on a farm. U will get practical plan by putting your knowledge and experience into a Business Plan. Are you involved in the farming business? Yes |

Crops or livestock, something that will start returning money within 6-9 months.
What do you recommend and why?
Thank you. My advise for you is to go and keep your =N=1m naira in Treasury Bills. Go and search for any agric business you want to focus on. Learn the secret of the trade with someone that is already established in the Business and already a success. You wont ask the above question after 3/6 months of learning.... Seek knowledge first. |

Healthilyea: Thanks for the feedback, but it's too expensive for me. Use the following cheap alternative method 1. Burn your soil to kill the weed seed and disease in your nursery soil 2. Mix it the soil with Old Saw Dust (makes your soil very light) 3. Add organic fertilizer to the combination and compost if you have. 4. Mix the combination with water( not too watery) 5. Fill your Nursery tray and sow your seeds. |

ExLaidback: Depending to much on FBNH was the single biggest mistake I made this year, and with that mistake I lost a significant amount of money. 2016 has proven so far not to be FBNH's year. Maybe later this year and certainly next year after FY2016 results things will turn around for the stock though. Since I dumped it and moved on, I can now think better and make better moves.
This is certainly not a buy or sell recommendation biko That,s the courage you need in the market, ability to dump and preserve capital i.e mastery of your emotion. I am not a fan of FBNH though I bought mine just above 3.00 and dump it when it reach 4.23 during the news of the new exchange rate. Dwizeone: I sincerely don't see that happening especially for GTB. The trend clearly shows that FI have preference for GTB. The soaring price of the stock is a testament. I agree with you on FI preference and soaring price of GTB but it is also a fact that banks inclusive of GTB are not immune from their environment in an economic recession. A massive 30% cut in salaries of staffs of top tier banks is an indicator that something is fundamentally wrong. Income line is reducing so fast that the only way to make performance look good is to cut salaries. If I am expecting a loss of 30% by EOY and I cant get income line to stem the tide, the easiest way to stem the tide is to reduce staff costs by the same ratio and get a flat result. I expect UBA, GTB and other banks to move along the same line, however I rather wait for prices to come down than lose hard earned cash in this current climate. |

Preciousseed: Have you considered the yield when you use a greenhouse for tomato cultivation vis-a-vis when you do open field? what about pest infestation and pest management in a greenhouse vis-a-vis open field? How about all season season cultivation? Not to mention the variety of tomato.....The truth is that a greenhouse cultivation anyhow you look at it pays far better than open field cultivation. My brother, with greenhouse you will break even in a shorter period than you will with open field! You also have a far higher yield to than open field, minimum pest infestation(if any), proper GAP, higher shelf life of produce, etc. The advantages of a greenhouse over open field can never be compared. My brother, I encourage you to embrace, adopt and practice greenhouse farming over open field! I will encourage you to read the book 'The Market Gardener" by Jean Martin Fortier who is making over a $100,000.00 per annum on a 1.5 acre growing vegetables in Canada. You will understand why I advocate for open field and simple green house to handle only fragile vegetables. =N=2m on a single greenhouse is too expensive, this is outside other expenses like land lease/purchase; appropriate machinery, source of water; labor cost; salaries of staffs; storage costs; transport costs & other miscellaneous expenses. You will run out of business if you dont have clients that can pay per kilo in your books, alternate Markets like Mile 12 & our local mkts etc dont care about your greenhouse paparazzi. |
Agriculture › Re: Green House Agronomist by Willie2015: 8:55pm On Aug 29, 2016 |
oladiran2: I disagree that you won't break even, it might only take awhile if you don't have a good targetted market.dry season is fast approaching and one can make best use of it even if one don't have a good target market but the local ones cos there will definitely going to be an increment in all vegetables during those season.who knows what will happen again this comi season.even without any problem in tomato supplies, most all bussiness re seasonal in nature so with atmost in 2-3yrs with continuous growing, you will break even and besides the structure is a forever one just like a building as long as the farm is yours and not lease, when you have it, you have it.it will take abt 4-5 yrs before any repair on it which is probably the nets. In rainy season, you will be competing with farmers that are working in Open Field. The four baskets of tomatoes you attached with your comments cant go for more than =N=1,500.00 during rainy season. In dry season, you will still be competing with modern farmers that are in the Open Field that can afford irrigation kits with good water source and can deliver volume to consumers at affordable prices without incurring much capital expenses. You still have to provide for middlemen commission/transport cost in the final analysis. Usage of green house is cool and desirable, but if you dont have the likes of Shoprites that pays per kilo in your books, I dont see how a farmer can cover his cost even with 2-3 yrs continuous growing. The best bet is to go on open field and have few green house to take of fragile veg. |

[quote author=HungerBAD post=48872972]Beautiful.
It is good investors are finding Cross Rivers State Nay Nigeria, conducive for doing business now.
The Economy is quietly picking up now.
Where are those that saw the death of Nigeria economically?I have some good news for you. [/quote
This is good news for Cross River State however the fact is that Nigeria is simply not conducive for doing business. The garment industry will not be immune from those problems that still plague the Nigerian business terrain,
1. Coy will still import all its machinery from abroad and thus will face forex problems. 2. Energy and high cost of running gen sets will eat deep into the coy profit. 3. Decreasing consumer disposable income since most states govt have load of arrears outstanding. 4. Competition with bend down clothes that are available at give away prices. 5. It is not advisable to start garment industry in a recession period when an average family is struggling to eat three square meal.
I hope they have a good business model........ |
