@Windy wendy

I think the vlookup may be useful if you keep the daily fsdh reports in different worksheets

you can create colums in worksheet 1 for opening price, close, high, low and volume - and use vlookup to populate from the FSDH worksheets.

I believe you can even link excel files.

This is getting very complicated oooo. all in the name of charting.
keep the daily fsdhh reports in different worksheets shocked shocked shocked. Naa, the file will become too large then. I used to keep track of volumes by just copying and pasting from the FSDH reports, but lost track of that one when I got real busy. I think what i'll just do is format easi's report to align with the fsdh one and then copy and paste the latest volumes column from then on, unless there's an easier way. Easimoni?
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by windywendy(f): 7:33pm On Dec 13, 2007
@Easimoni: Thanks for the sheet on volumes! That's a breath of FRESH  AIR

How do you get the numbers? Do you input them manually or do you just cut and paste from the FSDH spreadsheet? Is there some other way to automate the population of the sheet (obviously the vlookup function in excel doesnt work for this one as the closing price sheet gets replaced each day abi?)

@Pumping777: abeg no mind the vipico jare. No one pays anyone on this forum for all of the self less and time consuming work and research they do. If someone is generous enough to continually find time to share information on the forum, why would anyone come to the conclusion that the person is a snub simply because he/she didn't respond to an email?

On the matter of DEAP CAPITAL's listing, I've just been informed by my broker that the listing has been postponed indefinitely. shocked Could this be for real or is this just a diversion tactic huh If the listing was going to be done today then I presume that they would have already met all of the listing requirements. Why the sudden post-ponement, and indefinitely for that matter?

@aktopgun,

Did I hear you say you'll be looking to invest in Q2 08? If you don't want to be hanging out with the jonses (you know those ones that usually miss out on the good stuff?? Yep, that's them!), I suggest you invest sooner, preferably in the timeframe suggested by Wanaj0 and Fatherof2.

By the way, Unilever? Sounds like a good turn-around play. I wonder why the market did not react to the results perhaps there's some suspicion. But I'm kind of liking it. I'll be watching  smiley

Anyone watching AirService, it's just on its early upswing after a long downtrend. I don't know much about this company but it's been doing this up and down trend for a while. So might be one for the momentum traders to watch. Meanwhile I heard that Aureous (the guys that bought CI leasing) recently acquired an airservice company in Ghana. Wonder what potential they saw there. Also wondering that if an airservice company in Ghana can have potential enough to attract a PE firm like Aureous, what potential do you think one in Nigeria (whose economy and airspace is multiple times more vibrant) can hold? Time to dig your heels in and do some ground work here. You may not find anything exciting, but again it might be worth the dig . . .

All this 6-3-3-4 students are just making me feel old whereas my mates are still planning to play You 17 tournamnet come 2009!!!!

Well, UBA na special breed. If not provision for some doubtful loans, it will be provision for fraud or one extraordinary item. Basically it shows lack of good internal controls and corporate governance. Was selling my UBA in annoyance because of such issues. STB is not better. Hakeem and Tony are just similar in stule and character. Don't trust them one bit. Even in the banking sector, Tony is considered a cow boy. Rules are secondary to him. targets first. Under such scenario, expect many infractions on good corporate governance.

That said, for long term positioning, UBA is good but can give you heart ache.

Had a friend that bought UBA at 14.00 based on the impressive quarterly report only to see it crash to 6.00 when the result was released. The money invested was his housing loan menat to build a house. You can inagine seeing your portfolio halved within a short period. That is a recipe for High blood pressure.
6-3-3-4  grin grin. That's funny!

But Wanaj0, are you sure you're not comparing the old UBA to the new and improved one? I don't know about character oh, but when it comes to style, I think Tony delivers the goods -- at least look where he's taken UBA to in less than 24months. He was here in the States sometime in 2006 to give a presentation and after listening to that presentation and doing some ground work, I went and bought UBA at N12. The man has foresight and a solid management style -- otherwise, how else could the merger of those two radically different cultures (Old UBA vs. STB) have been able to produce the results that have been produced to date? Check out the products those guys are rolling out today, the alliances they're forming and the deals they're getting involved in . . . I'm simply impressed. That's what Hakeem couldn't do with UBA. Of course I've since sold my UBA but am planning to re-enter. I know their style is aggressive (which I really like by the way) but I seriously doubt that rules are secondary to them. But like I said earlier, I'll do some sniffing and see what I find.

My question is how can 1.20k dividend in UBA revive that price to like #55. it looks impossible.
Wait o, who told you that N1.20 dividend in UBA will revive the price to like N55 shocked Have you been talking to bigboylarry lately? confess now!

Seriously though, it's not necessarily the dividend that'll move the price of UBA up, it's the growth prospects. Most people don't invest in stocks solely for the dividend yield (even banks will pay you more for your money). But UBA is currently looking cheap, based on its forward PE and those who believe in the company will buy it for the growth prospects, which should ultimately result in capital appreciation. Am I making sense?

@Wanaj0, thanks for the UBA insight. I'll look into it again. But I must say I'm quite shocked, considering that they've been cleaning up their act and aggressively recruiting. The N4b you're refering to related to the old UBA and there's a new management at the helm now. But again let me dig further and see what comes up.

FatherOF2:
@Windywendy
  I don't personally make 25% every single week but many speculators do.Sometimes its three/four weeks,but i try to ensure i'm making money every
 month. Do you know if you start with N25m in January and set a conservative target of 25% every quarter(4 quarters total), you'll end up with N61m by year end
  with compounding.Each year the cycle repeats itself you just need to know how to ride it from experience.
Hmmm, Fatherof2, for many weeks in the market the only stocks that make 25% are the small cap ones that are illiquid -- those ones that if you put just 100k units out, the price will crash. So unless the speculators are using just small amounts to trade, I find it hard to believe that anyone makes 25% every week on the floor. Your three/four week timeframe is more plausible, as I do that very often myself. And yes, you're right, 25% every quarter is very conservative at least for now.

@ALL:

Assuming a growth rate of 50% in profit after tax, and no additional issue of shares, UBA's forward PE is 17. The growth rate of 50% is very conservative in my opinion, because the current year profits do not fully reflect the benefits that will accrue from the new alliance with the Chinese bank and the other aggressive initiatives that the bank put in place towards the end of its last financial year. Also, the last year's profit took a hit of over N4b and this is not expected to occur going forward. I think a more realistic growth rate will be somewhere around 70%, giving a forward PE of about 15. For those of you interested in long term investing, this is one to get into. The stock is currently trading well below even its 100-day MA so you might not get it at this price again (my opinion). This is a solid Long Term play guys!
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by windywendy(f): 10:51pm On Dec 04, 2007
Temmie10:
For starters, any thing that ends with MA is a moving average.
IN Technical analysis, some chartists use specific numbers like 40 day moving averages, or 50 or 20 to determine the trend a stock is moving or to make an informed decision about when to buy or sell a stock.
Someone might say, i will buy when a stock goes above its 200 day moving average and sell when the 20 day average crosses the 50 day one downwards, a lot of it is subjective though.
its not absolute but you'll be surprised how many times they work, and because a lot of people use them, u can ride on them.
If i can find the right link, i'll provide it.
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You can ride on it to generate cash for "much saner" investments at least until the strategy stops working grin.

@ windy wendy, please whats your take on diamond now? what effect do u think the gdrs will have.
plus what do u think of dangote sugar?
In all honesty, I'm still pondering that question in my head (wrt Diamond and the GDRs). Otherwise I really think Diamond is undervalued and is a GOOD medium to long term play. I haven't bought yet and won't until I figure out how the GDR will affect the valuation. However with the info Temmie10 provided about Actis amassing the GDRs, I'm beginning to think this deal might be SWEET afterall. Let's see how that plays out.

WRT Dangote Sugar, Seriously undervalued company. I have it in my portfolio as one of my longterm plays, and am just patiently waiting for the market to come to its senses on this one  grin grin. I'm watching the price closely and picking up units here and there as the price dips to unreasonable levels. Plus I hear that Dangote is reconsidering this nonsense quarterly dividend thing -- that should do something good for the stock price, knowing how the market can be . . .

@yodiyokun
if you like i can forward you the fsdh reports for the last 3days.
From the last time I was following this company: They got acquired by Linde, a much larger global player, in 9/2006 (or thereabout) and embarked on a restructuring of the business. Seemed like a very good investment then (@N4) but my broker couldn't even get me 100k units -- very illiquid stock then, so I lost interest. Not sure if the price now is OK but there's a lot of info on the website (I mean the parent company's website) -- take time to look up the presentations and read up on the plans they have for their divisions. You can also listen in on the investors' presentation. It seems like Linde is planning to use the Nigerian division as a launching pad for West Africa (though they already have a Kenyan plant). They expanded production capacity of their CO2 plant. I like the new management, they seem focused and seem to have a generous dividend payout policy. That's about all I know for now.
