faketan: Please windywendy, AKT etc,
make una help me talk for the question above. I sabi say Sping get K-feet before.
Please can I got into any of those now? Should I wait? I'ld say "stay away from DEAPCAP". That bonus rumor is just a RUMOR and if the outcome of the meeting those guys had is anything to go by, it doesn't seem like they're planning to do a bonus issue. They increased the authorized share capital to make room for a PO. If you're interested in that company long term, wait for the PO. My opinion though. Spring Bank? I thought they're having problems? Don't know much about them though, but if I were you, I would check up on their financial health before investing. I heard sometime ago that they were at risk of losing their operational license -- not good, if you ask me. But then do more research. |

@all Japaul-ites: That company's valuation is waaayyyy out of whack, and I don commot for that side oh (bonus or not, I don't really care at this point). Twas a jolly jolly ride. Be aware that according to the PO docs, they're listing the additional shares 2nd week in Feb. So make your decisions. If you get out while you're still ahead, you can always re-enter at a lower price after PO sellers go on rampage -- remember those PO shares were given at a huge discount, so even a price like N6 will be enough gain for some. |

RoughCut: Its a fund which means your subscription is part of a 'larger' pool of funds that invests in a telecomms business probably MTN but i'm not sure so don't quote me. Anyway the 'koko' is that Lead capital will take 20% of the profit or returns which they may re-invest in the fund after which they will distrubute the profit to the subscribers in the fund according to the proportion of your investment. Treat the investment as a mutual fund or unit trust. What Are they serious at all? They can't possibly be. This is daylight robbery! |

tonyjon: @Windywendy,
What is you take on UTC PLC?.
Peace. Hmmm, UTC. I'm not sure how I feel about this company yet. First they hired the woman with the midas touch to run their sales department. That woman is a PERFORMER no doubt. Shortly after she took over the sales unit, she streamlined the whole sales process, refocussed their target segments and sales shot up by more than 50% within 12 months of her being there! But then the folks on the cost side were busy being out-of-control and so all that sales success did not show up in the company's bottomline. Then she's made MD and I thought "now she'll be able to do something about managing costs since she's at the helm now". But alas, that did not last long. Actis those guys again!!, noticed her, snatched her up and put her in charge of Mouka foam, a company in which they just recently invested heavily in too bad those UTC guys couldn't keep her . So it's back to square one with UTC (my opinion). I don't believe in the company's value proposition (how many people will actually troop to UTC to buy meat unless of course there's something about it that's just absolutely different. Plus they have tough competition from better managed companies like UAC foods and Bigtreat), and worse still I doubt they can successfully deliver solid results -- unless of course they get another midas touch person at the helm of affairs there. Even from a short term trading perspective, the stock price is not volatile enough for me to do CICO but there's some volume, which is a good thing. So the short answer to your question is: If you're considering long term, perhaps UTC might do a turnaround and be a good candidate. They had an article in the papers recently and said a whole lot of stuff, and also mentioned that they've been making profit since May or June 2007. But I still don't believe in their ability to deliver value. Just my thoughts there. Hope this helps. |

@all, just took a quick look at the Tantalizers PP memo. Don't like what I see. Margins are too thin, historical results not too impressive, projections too optimistic (and not very impressive despite that). Might still make you some money though, esp. if they list later this year as they've mentioned. I won't recommend this PP though.
@Easimoni, I too wanted to buy Stdinsure but my broker warned me that they'll be going on TS soon. So beware. |

FatherOF2: I won't say pass this not to be known. Ok o, no problem. I actually took a substantial position today but that was based on the renewed interest I noticed in those aluminium companies and the fact that RUSAL had come out to announce that ALSCON was up and ready to go in FEB. I also put a phone call through to someone at the FAN factory who confirmed that things were kind of looking up educative but not too interesting conversation, i'ld say . . . Anyhow, this is just additional good news there -- shows that my instincts were on the right track Cooooll! |

FatherOF2: Any positive change in profitability you see in that industry has nothing to do with ALSCON at all. ALSCON has not started affecting their bottom line. They're not even producing. Thought they're starting production this Feb. In my dreams though, it seems logical that RUSAL (the folks who bought alscon) will likely acquire one of these aluminium companies (FAN being the most logical candidate) because its the next stage of production in the whole aluminium process (i.e. the fabrication stage). But then again, worldwide those guys are not heavily into fabrication. Anyway, since refined aluminium is an essential raw material used by these aluminium companies, sourcing it locally (instead of internationally as they're currently doing) will go a long way in improving their bottomline. Abi? |

EMMAACHILE: UTC: Penny stock to watch 21 January, 2008 09:00:00 SIMON NJOKU Font size: Before last year, not a few investors could look twice at the UTC stock for possible investment considerations.
The reason was not fat-fetched as the company was yet to sort out itself in terms of debt obligations and other operational challenges. So, it was difficult for the average investor to understand exactly the direction the company was going.
New focus But UTC appears to have now swum out of the danger zones and moving towards sustainable growth and profitability. Chairman, board of directors of the company, Hayford Alile indicated this much when he addressed shareholders at the company's last annual general meeting. "As expected , settlement of historic bank debts, some trade creditors and paid down negotiated tax has improved corporate goodwill and access to funds," Alile said. And this achievement seemed to have provided UTC the much needed breathing space to better assess and harness the growth opportunities beckoning on it. After a careful calculation of its chances in the food industry, the company decided to step down from the conglomerate category of the Nigeria Stock Exchange to join the Food and Beverages subsector where it feels it would play a more active role. "Management is fully committed to developing the food business by improving and expanding current operations. As food is a necessity, we will continue to use our value proposition to the best of our ability and remain a leading food processing company in the country," said the chairman.
Growth UTC's focus for the future, according to Alile, is centred on expansion of its activities. The company, among others, wants "to get closer to the consumers and take our rightful position in the market as the foremost food producing company in Nigeria". Hitherto, all the food company's activities to date have been carried out in a single factory outlet at Creek Road, Apapa. But the board chairman indicated: "Henceforth, multiplication will come with expansion." Specifically, the company has a new factory and and sales depot at Oba Akran Avenue, Ikeja. "By the special grace of God, we shall be opening 'UTC Meat Village' in Victoria Island, two in-store meatshops and two more bakeries before the end of the year. More bakeries, cake plants and meat factory will follow in the next two years in other geopolitica;l zones of the nation."
The plunge For many investors who perceive UTC as a credible brand with a wealth of experience on consumer markets, there is no doubting the fact that the company is heading in the right direction. This category of investors is already taking a plunge for UTC shares in the market. This could be gleaned from the performance of UTC stock in the capital market. From a share price of N2.76 late October 2007 and N3.81 ending of November, the market price has as at mid January 2008 climbed to N4.16. Investors' confidence in the stock is further buoyed by the company's encouraging end of year result. UTC's turnover for the financial year ended 31st December, 2006 amounted to N951.6 million, from N612.6 million in 2005. The operating loss for 2006 was N23.7 MILLION; which is 10 per cent of the operating loss of 2005. With exceptional items of N101 million, the company ended up with profit before tax of N54.3 million and profit after tax of N52.6 million. The company's future, in the 2007 financial year therefore, seems bright, considering also that the firm has consistently posted profit since May 2007.
Sceptics Unarguably, a number of investors are still not convinced that the current performance of the company can stand the test of time. They need to be convinced that present management of the company under Folusho Olaniyan can consistently deliver. Olaniyan assumed headship of the company following the resignation of former managing director, Adepeju Adebajo over a year ago. They desire to see how well the company's expansion plans are implemented and with what impact on its market performance. So, shareholders and prospective investors are looking forward to Alile's responses to the above and other pertinent issues at the company's next annual general meeting Hmmm, interesting article. But didn't these UTC guys just loose their magic touch MD to Mouka foam which was recently heavily invested in by Actis? |
