I am dumbfounded by the North also. To the extent I was doing research in the past to identify the problems and challenges of the North that has made the region so poor and under-developed.

I read many expert research reports stating many obvious reasons but one stood out because, as a Nigerian aware of the nuanced reality of Nigerian regions, it made sense.

It was a research paper that identified low entrepreneurial zeal and expertise as a major reason for why the North has not done better taming multi-dimensional poverty, unemployment and deprivation.

If we all think about it, then it makes sense. What do people of the North do or think of daily in comparison to the South where folks are always thinking of one hustle or the other to eat and thrive?

The North, because of the indoctrinated subjugation of the masses using religion and class discrimination plus deliberate manipulation of average Northerners to embrace ascetism etal, creates people who do not belive they should aspire to be wealthy or even desire material opulence.

It is like creating a man with no testosterone meaning he cannot function as a man. The North cannot conquer poverty or make progress until (1) they gain an Awolowo, who will insist on free and compulsory education for all Northern children. Male or female.

(2)They must also embrace and imitate their Dangotes who show how the power of business entrepreneurship changes lives of people and society.


(3) Most importantly, and impacting on 1 and 2 above, they must deliberately de-emphasise religion as a central ethos of all and every aspect of societal life.

Since 3 is unlikely to happen, as the Hausa man below insists, then I don't think things will change for the better in the North anytime soon.

There are many Moslem nations in the world doing well. The difference is that Islam is not used as a tool to suppress the people into zombie-like docility as is the case with Northern Nigeria and the Sahel nations like Niger Republic, Mali etal.
