Could you please give more details about this freewill? I'm not very religious, but I hear people mention freewill all the time and the idea doesn't sit well with my understanding of the word. To me, there are two concepts in theology that makes the concept of freewill contentious.

The first is the concept of hell. If one is going to be punished for making certain choices, where then is the freewill? How is the presence of freewill different from the absence of it? How does deffered punishment imply freewill? If you're going to send me to jail for speaking against people in authority, would you say there's freedom of speech just because you postponed the imprisonment to a later time? In the Bible, some punishments were even immediate.

The second is the concept of omniscience. I wonder if free will can exist side by side with the idea that the creator already knows every single detail of the future. If my actions are predestined, it means my righteousness or lack of thereof is also predestined. Where then is the freewill?

There was this documentary aired on CTV on Wednesday about how cars have been missing in Toronto recently. I was watching the documentary with friends; two from Jamaica, one from Guyana, one from the US and two originally Canadians. We were all amazed by how efficient the thieves were. It was both sad and interesting but also became particularly embarrassing for me when it got the part where these cars were eventually found. Yes, your guess is right, many of them were found in Nigeria. CTV even sent a crew to interview car dealers in Lagos. The car dealers were speaking pidgin and the American dude asked me to translate it for them. Of course, he knew I couldn't but probably just wanted to remind others that these one is originally Nigerian. Well, he was never my best friend and others, being quintessential Canadians, were smart enough to ignore him. Imagine the ignominy.

The word "mad" means "angry" and it can also mean "crazy". People say "I got mad cause of the way he talked to me" but they don’t say "I am a mad man" when they mean they're angry cause they know it would be misunderstood. How many words do you want to remove cause they have other meanings you don't like? What of the ones you don't even know about?

Context, that's how languages work. Your child knowing the proper meaning of gay and how to use it only enriches thier vocabulary and makes him more confident. There's nothing wrong with saying "I feel so gay this morning".

A million of them. Gay is a common word and I use it often to describe colors. Kids need to know that meaning instead of mystifying the entire word. Nothing stops you from telling your kid the meaning in this context and moving on. By your reaction, you've already told the kid there's something interesting there and they'd gladly learn it from outsiders. You had the chance to take control of your child's learning process and you freaked out.

The essence of replacing common words like "happy" with uncommon ones like "joyful" or "gay" is to enrich the children's vocabulary. Heaven knows I'd tell my child, "like many other words, this word could mean different things based on the context, and in this context, it means happy or joyful". That's education.

OP could have just told his child it means happy and move on, and that would have normalized the word for the kid. Why are they freaking out and probably making the kid more curious? How does the word gay change the child's orientation? You think most gay people knew about that word before realizing thier sexuality? Where did you mention SS3 in this post and how did I contradict myself? You said you were told the texts in bold and I'm telling you you were clearly misguided. However, not everyone was misguided like that. Many of us were told the value of education early enough. It's all about individual experiences. The same Nigerian education has been some people's escape route from the jaws of poverty. Even the fact that many don't practice what they studied isn't enough to invalidate education cause it's easier to teach an educated person. While education in Nigeria is not so great and probably dead to you, it is still doing wonders for a lot of people. A lot of Nigerian graduates are growing in thier careers both home and abroad. So if anyone told you education was an automatic ticket to success, hold that person responsible for your misinformation and not education itself.
