Romance / Re: What Can I Do To This Feeling? by WoundedLamb: 1:51pm On Apr 26, 2022
Datboredberri:
grin

How cute... I'm 19... I can relate... I also hate how adults think our feelings aren't valid... Or the best thing to do is ignore them...

But I'll be honest with you... Love ain't all that... Unless you find the 'one'... Which is nearly impossible... After a lot of rejections and heartbreaks... You would realise how disappointing people truly are... And even if you do find the right person for you, can you keep her? Handle the drama? The pressure? All the bullsh*t love comes with but no one ever talks about? The awkward moments? Those depressing nights she wants to be alone? Your own uncertainty and doubt? I can go on... undecided

Love isn't a fairytale.. It's not 'get her, game over'...

It's tedious... emotionally draining... And everything love isn't...

Are you really 19? I couldn't agree less.

Love is extremely demanding. When you're ready, there's no easy way. One just has to manage thier expectations to avoid to getting burned and eventually becoming an anti-love campaigner. Unfortunately, it usually takes a few failures to set the expectations right. But then again, the downtimes serve to create memories that, over time, strengthen the love. smiley

Crime / Re: Teenage Girl Beats 85-year-old Woman To Death In Adamawa by WoundedLamb: 1:10pm On Apr 26, 2022
sonofElElyon:

"Beat" is mild.. doesn't capture the severity of the act

You don't treat words in isolation. The expression doesn't just say "beat", it says "beat to death".

When a verb is accompanied by an adverb or an adverbial phrase (or a prepositional phrase functioning as an adverb), then it becomes the duty of the adverb or the phrase to modify it. In this particular case, the prepositional phrase "to death" has already modified the verb "beat" to express its severity. It answers the question, "how severely?" Regardless of the verb used, it doesn't get any more severe than that.

Moreover, to beat is to strike with something, usually a club. Both words are synonymous and interchangeable in this context. The only reason why one would rather use the verb "club" here is if the writer is trying to be emphatic on the fact that a club was used and nothing else. But then again, Sahara reporters is more interested in emphasizing the fact that the victim died. They want you to read the article if you want to know exactly how it happened.

Again, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the title.

Title should read "clubs.. to death" not "beats.."

When you strike someone with a club, you're beating them.

Elon Musk will never own a company he will not get involved with. Till today, he is still part of SpaceX and Tesla's engineering teams. He's even stated it before that his work schedule is the reason for his failed relationships.

I just hope he doesn't fall to pressure from Republicans and Trump fans. Americans with their polarized thinking have already politicized the deal, especially the right wing. They're already saying he will unban Trump and allow them post their usual theories.

Let's see how it goes.

Not sure the kind of impact you're expecting, but I don't see anything other than investors channeling their cash elsewhere. Elon's approach to hustle takeover gave them a good deal for thier assets.

He has already secured funding from Morgan Stanley with Tesla stock as collateral. Liquidating that much asset will impact Tesla negatively. That's if it is even possible.

I hope he's not caught up in an excitement bubble of having a new corp. Elon musk is kind of an erratic and ambitious person. He may not run a social media company properly. if he eventually mishandles and devalues Twitter, he have himself, his stock and his reputation to blame.

Oh... he has? I thought as much. I doubt he'd get deeply involved in the day-to-day running of Twitter though. He probably just wants a platform that'd give him some level of control and freedom to shape the outcome of events. At least, we will have someone fully responsible for the platform.

Why don't people know that Samsung high-end phones are more expensive than those of iPhones? Samsung is just more scaled out thus catering for more people of different pocket sizes.

Nice. Change is exciting. Let's see what he does with the app. As for the money, it's unlikely he'd pay direct cash for the purchase. That's more than 16% of his entire networth. Why bury the cash when international banks like JP Morgan would gladly give him the loan?

Romance / Re: What Is Really The Problem With Some Married Women by WoundedLamb: 2:32pm On Apr 24, 2022
damo2014:

Bro. A married woman is not expected to show such level of vulnerability or immorality under any circumstances you can think of. This is not debatable at all. A married woman on whose head a dowry was paid in the presence of every respectable member of her family. There are some customs that support "one man, plenty woman" This tells you that there are some form of justification/defense for polygamy.

And there are no cultures that support polyandry? Do you even see how ridiculous it is to support cheating on the man's side with "there are some cultures that support polygamy"? Do these cultures also support men flirting with married women like the OP? Well then, go and marry the already married woman since these cultures exist to support whatever a man does. And when girls sleep with married men, don't come here to call out Nigerian girls because "there are some cultures that support polygamy".

Dude, even cultures that support polygamy do not make it okay to cheat on the wives. And that's not even the case here. After heavily flirting with a married woman, someone has the guts to come here to ask what's wrong with some married women. Well, the same wrong with the married men flirting with them is also wrong with them. How you guys don't see that your actions are working against your own logic is mind blowing. You want us to gather and shame married women while we shy away from calling out those that do it with them, especially the married ones. To what end? You can shame them from now till eternity if that makes you feel good about your own debauchery. But you know nothing is going to change until you learn to hold yourselves accountable. The more you refuse to also call out the men, the more you increase the chances of your wives getting hooked.

The burden of maintaining the sanity of society and the sanctity of marriage cannot be placed on one gender alone. It's just not practical.

The fact that the OP believes he could just come here to call our women without realizing the fact thar he's just as dirty as the woman in question is just hilarious.

The minister had no business threatening and making the police parade him like that. Yes he was a wife beater and a useless husband but the question is whether or not he killed his wife.
Her autopsy report was kept secret and i wonder why? If she died of the cancer that she suffered from is it right to pin her death on the man in revenge for his being a bad husband?

Well, beating her is already crime enough. Maybe cancer was already killing her, but the man certainly didn't have to help the disease.

That said, I really don't know why we still parade people like in the olden days.

Oh Sorry... In plain English, the difference between seized and frozen does not in any way affect the gist of the post you quoted. So making that the bone of contention instead of addressing the message is nothing but a strawman's argument. Russia has been denied control of thier assets and the fate of these assets heavily depends on the outcome of the war. So if you have any logical thing to say to that, bring it forward. However, if you're going keep dishing out insults and running around the subject like y'all do on Nairaland, you're welcome to entertain to me.

And it's "ignorance" not "ignorant".

I form English? Does that expression even make sense? Does the anti-West sentiment also imply anti-English language? Lol...

If u pple dnt know anything just shut up..... Russian was not seized no country can do DAT. It was only frozen so that they cannot use it To fund d war

Lol... It's not seized, it's frozen. This is supposed to affect my post in what way? Sir, the difference is in semantics and even within the legal framework, the plausible difference does not have any bearing on the premise of my submission. The assets are not available to Russia at the moment and there's not telling when they'll be or what becomes of them. The West wouldn't go freezing assets with the mantra "we want to use them to aid Ukraine". But how and when Russia gets these assets will be determined by how and when this war ends. It wouldn't be very smart to think that Russia will invade Ukraine, take the two regions under consideration and peacefully walk away with all thier assets. That's not how negotiations work. That's not wars work. Compromises must be made and while none of us know for sure what those compromises would be, one thing is clear, these assets are on the table. Every other thing is speculations.

Like I responded and detailed out, it is your personal opinion and wish, because there would never be an extent. I illustrated why. Someone can not seize your #50 when you have his #500 with you. Secondly, there is what we call precedence, Legally speaking, has the US rebuilt all the nations it invaded? So on what moral justification will it stand? They know too well what will happen to their, if they do so, reason IMF and the EU has agreed to foot the rebuild. What has alliance got to do with your money with me? How has their collective sanctions fared? The world is not made up of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Western Europe. Just China and India is 2.7b people. Russia has made clear that western cooperations would have their assets frozen until theirs are unfrozen.

You claim, you don’t engage in arguments about the future, but find it hard to accept the fact that Europe and IMF has agreed to fund the rebuild because it would be cheaper than allowing Russia nationalize assets, something easily verifiable. This is so because you are simply not happy about it.

Like I said, such arguments lead to nowhere. Time will tell.
Foreign Affairs / Re: Germany Promises Ukraine $40.12 Million For Reconstruction, Sheu Sani reacts by WoundedLamb: 4:55pm On Apr 23, 2022
skoskosko:

Tells you that Ukraine was foolish. Germany is the biggest economy in Europe and all it could promise is $40m? Are you expecting money from Hungary, Poland, Latvia, etc? How much will the likes of Italy and France contribute? At most the US would loan them a few billions in exchange for exclusive trade deals. Their best bet is on loans promised by the IMF already.

To the fallacy of using the frozen reserve assets of Russia to fund it, either in part or whole is a tall dream because Russia will not be the losing side militarily. Do you also realize that more than 600 western multinational companies either pulled out or suspended operations in Russia? Do you realize that the Russian government in tit for tat put a retaliatory freeze on the fixed and liquid assets too? Meaning the highest a foreign body could pull was limited to $10000. Do you know the collective value of over 600 multinational coys, invested in all sectors of the Russian economy from oil, gas, steel, aviation, food, commerce, auto, banking, clothing etc. The only sector you won’t find western coys is defense! We are looking at a collective value of more than $1trillion compared to $300b, which Russia can easily nationalize if they dare.

If you also feel Russia will not because it is against the laws protecting FDI(foreign direct investment), you should also know that the unilateral seizure of foreign reserves of a sovereign nation is illegal under international law and makes other nations think twice before putting their reserves there too. Now you see so many countries currently diversifying their foreign reserves including US ally isreal.

This is the simple reason why the US and its western allies have never for once contemplated that option, even though the Ukrainians have muted it severally. It’s a checkmate.

Well Europe has already promised to make the funds available for the rebuild. Russia is not Venezuela.

Just like many other wars in the past, the legal battle starts after the military one. Until then, all we can do is speculate or argue. Unfortunately, arguments about the future are more opinionated than factual, and I don't really engage in those cause it leads nowhere. One thing we know for certain is that the West protects the West. No other part of the world has thier kind of alliance. And they'll make bold steps to rebuild Ukraine. Russian assets will play a role in that in one way or the use.

To answer more clearly, here is my response to the other guy that quoted me:
WoundedLamb:

That's why I said, to what extent? What I know for sure is that some of those assets will definitely go into aiding Ukraine either directly or indirectly. Here is what I mean, some of these assets make profits even while they're under the control of the West pending the outcome of the war and any follow-up negotiations like you said. When such assets worth hundreds of billions appreciate in value, the profit is always tangible. Therefore, the key element here is the time between the seizure and the release of these assets (a year is like day in international relations). That's exactly how finance works. Time is everything. Like I said, the West will try to aid Ukraine and they will not do it all from thier pockets.

Russian assets will go back to Russia but when? How long will the legal battle go on? What happens to the value of the assets within that period. It's all a game of finance and it hasn't even started.
