Science/TechnologyRe: Nigeria In Rosatom Talks For Up To $80 Billion Nuclear Power by xdos(op): 12:24pm On Apr 24, 2015
netotse:
lol...where do I start from:

The problem with gas in Nigeria is more of a fiscal/financial/regulatory problem not a technological problem. It simply doesn't make sense to invest in gas at the current tariff rates, unit price for gas to power in Nigeria is $2.5 per Mscf since last year, it was $1.5 before that. Commercial prices for gas to other sectors are in the region of $4 - 8 per Mscf, depending on if you're buying from NGC or a franchise holder. International prices were somewhere around $4.65 last year. (Gas is priced in USD per Mscf when you say KG you're prolly referring to LPG.)
.
Do u mean investing in gas to power? If you think investing in gas at the current tarrif rate doesn't make sense, why did the US govt invest so much in it even before they discovered shale gas? Now letz come home... Algeria also is rich in Natural gas like Nigeria just invested heavily in Gas to power... Angola also is investing heavily in that too...
I really don't know much about gas prices world international but I sure do know that profit also is been made but maybe not as high as LNG exports... I think the companies are just exploiting the weakness and corruption in our govt hence the reason for the PIB delay.
Even with the current price, do u think it is cheaper to invest in Nuclear technology than gas?

This is a wonderful Invention... But they also need to make it safe for humans cos most airlines are been loaded while passengers are seated.... Also passengers handcarry luggages too will need to be scanned...

Broda , I agree to a point with you ,I must also stress that corruption is not the only reason , if it was the case what about the China , UAE , even USA and UK , they battle with corruption too but they have managed to live with it and come up with a check and balance , a normal human is corrupt if left unchecked , until we reached a point in Nigeria that we must accept that corruption is a human disease and we need to build check and balance system around any position that is liable to corruption .For example , what we need is transparency of contract bidding , for example it should be known to the public who won a contract and when is it due for completion ( we don't need to know how much it was awarded for ) , that's what is done in countries that manage to get things done .
Yes , we need Government to put in place these checks and balance but because this senators or legislatures came from the same broken system they cannot perform even if they want to . For example ,we have been saying that CCTV should be placed at public places like police station and airport for security , monitoring and surveillance duties but we are still waiting ( even relative safe countries install CCTV not to talk of bloody Nigeria ) . Government have approved it but the local heads always sabotage the CCTV installation or put a fake one there ..

Those engineers in UAE are Nigerian trained but did an online course or self trained themselves and left Nigeria because of the system or environment in Nigeria ...the Nigerian environment is not conducive for a normal human being ... Can you imagine we don't have electricity ..even though 6billion dollars have been issued ,

finally ,we are saying roughly the same stuff but from a different perspective , there will always be corruption but we should find a way to check it or create a transparent system e.g CCTV at public places , police station , airport , motor park , governments , audit trails , this is what stop or deter humans
I agree with you.. how can these anomalies in our nation be solved seeing the kind of people we have in govt. Can we ever get out of this Mess? check out money bin wasted in the name of solving power issues... The gas turbines currently been installed were purchased during Obasanjo's era in govt. They wia purchased and dumped... Sometin dat was not suppose to tk more than 1 yr to install... It was during Jonathan’s era dat he picked up d project again and these turbines are 10yrs this year....
Nigeria is blessed with sufficient gas. We shouldn't be battling with power but a lot of this gas is bin flared...
NLNG bonny has been begging the FG to take a Final Investment Decision on Train 7 but the govt has turned deaf ears... Nigeria still takes crude products outside to be refined When they can easily hold our oil companies here and insist they build their refineries here.. The govt knows dat these mentioned above are ways they can create employments for thousands of Nigerian but be cos of their greed and lack of transparency... Who will bell d cat?

Yes , you have made a valid point , however , the culprit is still not corruption , it is a combination of lack of good governance and an uneducated ,greedy and a population of poverty mentality -grab and go , the corruption in china and Dubai is worst than Nigeria but you cannot detect it because the government and the population have an expectation of good service and results ..for example , if you secure a contract in china and Dubai for 5 million dollars by the time the contracts paper gets to you its 15 millions ( the extras go to the pen pushers ) , the only thing they ask you is that you complete project and they will even given you bonus for completing on time , the problem in Naija is that the populace do not expect much too, we have not been trained to complete projects and our government had taken advantage of this mentality, the evident is on the street , everyone is trying to dupe one another ... even from the airport , police and custom trying to extract money from you just to pass through an airport , I tell you bruv , the Nigerian mentality of grab and go ( 80 percent is guilty ) has finished us , (we even take this mentality abroad with us ) we should have a mentality of grab and finish project , then things will get done . We might even had a good leader but he will be frustrate by how the system and people think

All the completed projects in Nigeria were completed by foreign contractors that have been trained to finished projects except the ones the government stopped due to the fact that the contract did not cooperate with the government .

You are right when you said ,we Nigerians have the brain, yes we do but our Nigerian religious mentality society of grab and go is stopping and killing us , ..I was in the UAE recently and most of the projects managers of these big projects in the UAE are Nigerians trained with certified skills , for example , the new modernised Library in DOHA in Qatar , was project managed by an Nigerian Engineer ...now the question to you -why can't these Nigerians do the same in Nigeria ?? ... I actually forgot that we don't even have electricity in Nigeria ...so nothings is gonna get down anyway .. you see my point
Broda! this whole thing still bothers on corruption. We too have an expectation from the govt but we dont ve people who can stand upto the govt. And out biggest undoing is that we celebrate the evil men in the society.
I still see the grab and go as corruption. Corruption is the reason the govt isnt living up to expectations... Imagine where a contract is advertised for 5M, and I have to bribe the govt with some good amount of money to secure the contract. How then can the contract be perfectly executed? and ofcourse the govt will still keep quite when the contractor fails to meet up with standard because they know what they have done in secret. The few good men in the country have refused to talk... How can one even talk when touts, cultists, militants and criminals now occupy the seat of power...
Now check out our Engrs in UAE like you mentioned... If you check their background, you will see that they all studied abroad. We have the best of brains... Just that we here channel them to -ve things of life.

-why can't these Nigerians do the same in Nigeria ?
The only way you can do this if you have someone in the helm of affairs... The govt needs to encourage entrepreneurship. There is this mentality that if you are not a white, you cannot do it... The local companies need to be empowered. Give them projects with timelines... Encourage them to train their staff...

why don't you have these kinda station in Africa , please don't blame corruption
What else should we blame.. Ofcourse it is because of the greediness of the people in govt. All they care about is themselves... They leave our Universities ill-quipped... An Engineering graduate of a University cant design a thing... Even our lecturers cant cos they are not trained..

I remember then in school, our lecturers will go source for old Engineering books.. from their they get their handouts, set exams and lecture... Because they lack technical-know-how, they cant write their own books... Look at the just concluded election.. checkout what happened at the collation centre... Even our 'Professors'.... Tell me... How can these ones impart knowledge to our upcoming generation? It isnt about the big names... The govt needs to invest more in our education.. Invest in research institutes... Keep our youths busy wiv technology improvement related tasks.. When this is done, our youths will no more have time for trivialities... creating tribal enmity...
This is 2015, Nigeria as a nation shouldnt be at this level.. Trust me when I say we have the best brains in the world... Look out our people outside.. they are doing very fine. Now, because our govt's refusal to invest in our Univs, instead of it improving our brains, it is rather causing brain drain...
We have what it takes to take this great nation forward....

Honestly, it is tiring. Look at the recent cases of migrants - how many died only because they are trying to seek better life? Others going there threw another just cos their religions do not align. You wonder what the govt. of those nations are doing? You ask, where did we get it wrong?

The bolded, are you serious about the above?
Ofcourse I am very serious... Our labs are ill equipped and dat is why we've got lots of brain drain.... Our people are very intelligent and that is why when they study outside, they make the best results.
I mean in 2015, there are things Nigeria as a country should not be depending on other countries for.. We have the brains... We have what it takes to move this country forward. The govt should equip our Universities.. Have our labs equipped and lecturers trained else our graduates will keep depending on them for survival.

Even the maintenance, do we practice it well? We have this mentality of 'Abeg, na my property? Anyhow wee I do am, make them collect afterall I go still get my money'. I do not believe the black race is cursed, I only know we have not had a leader who can harness our diversities to create a strong nation under which every region will say - Yes!! He is the chosen one!.

I'd love to try those speed trains oh (nothing feels like feeling you're a little bit like Flash or Minato grin).
Talking abt the black race cursed, am really not talking about Nigeria alone... Last time in the US, most of the time I took a drive to downtown Albany, there was always gunshots... Downtown Albany is dominated by blacks... One time I took a drive with my Italian friend to Newark, that guy was never at peace until we left.. Am not saying all the blacks there are violent oh.. but mehn..

The state of our universities is nothing to write home about. I remember then, the only time they get to open the labs are when the NUC comes around. Even our lecturers dont know how to practicalize what they teach.. Brains are wasting in those places..

I wonder why Japan will reduce the speed to 500km/h. . . Do they not want people experiencing the designed speed of the train? grin

I would like to see China achieve the above. A country which its tech was considered inferior. . .funny how things change. Somewhere down the line, scramjets are being developed which can take one from Tokyo to London in approx. 1hr. 30 mins.; Elon Musk's Hyperloop sounds interesting.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Africa, an oaf is threatening to kill 14 more Gambians and asking foreigners to go back or be killed, two parties are at each other's throats, two tribes insulting one another, nomads killing some, BH doing what they know to do. . .[/quote]The truth is dat we don't practice Engineering in this country. What we do in this part of the country is maintenance.
How many functional research centres do we have in this country? Sometimes I ask myself this question... is d black race cursed? All that comes into our head is violence... hate for one another.. We don't want to c d other man prosper... Travel outside this country, checkout black dominated areas, there is always violence... This is crazy...
As for those speed trains, am not sure I'll want to try that...

expertise and procurement would kill whatever gains you think you would be making. The "cheapness" of nuclear fuel is in operating costs but here in Nigeria such most likely won't be the case.
That is why I think the govt should invest more in gas turbines both simple and combined cycles.. Nigeria is a country blessed with natural gas in excess... Instead of companies flaring the gas with reckless abandon, it should be channeled to power generating plants... With $80 billion invested in gas turbine technology, it will go a long way in solving our power issues... It is safer too...
Feraz:
If you are in a well known multinational, they have to comply with global rules. Now, if you notice, govt. cannot be everywhere enforcing the safety law which is why there are signs there to guide us. It is just like saying people should go scoop fuel from a damaged tanker when we know how risky that is. Of course, the govt. has a role to play such as prolly using drones to track all those pipeline vandals but at the same time, the citizens can help by complying even when the govt. is not watching.

Yeah. . .the article said by 2035 which I believe is not such a bad time. I actually thought Nuclear was cheaper?
Bro, unless I didn't read that article well... If dat amount is just for 1200MW output then it is pretty expensive... we have natural gas in excess...

Companies should ensure that their workforces are fully equipped with PPE. It is sad that we do not practice safety in this country. Even when sweeping my house most times, I try to cover my nose with a handkerchief knowing that it can lead to difficulty in breathing for me should I have a tiny speck of dust enter my nose. I cannot imagine working in a cement plant without nose mask, that is insane honestly speaking. We cannot keep blaming the govt. for what many of us can do ourselves.

.This our nonchalant attitude towards safety is another thing to be looked at. How can someone smoke where a pipeline is located? Yet, we blame the govt. for our lack of safety when there are glaring signs there reading "DO NOT SMOKE". It is not left out to them only, see conductors having their bodies outside a speeding bus, people pressing their phones while in a filling station (even the attendants are not left out as some receive calls there or use it to calculate). We need massive reorientation on safety practices. If this can happen where there is a major pipeline, what are we going to do then should the nuclear power plant become a reality? I really do not want to think of it. undecided
.
Let me take me for an example... I started my career with a company here in Nigeria though owned partly and operated by Shell. The company takes safety very seriously. You cant go into the process plant with your mobile phone or battery powered equipment or without complete PPE. Driving within the company facilities both the Industrial area, liason road and the residential area, you must have your seatbelt on for both the driver and the passengers and you must obey the speed limit..You must obey and work within the confines of ur permit to work and you must adhere to the drug and alcohol policy... When I started with them, it was very difficult keeping to all the rules especially the seatbelt and mobile fone... But with time, it became part and parcel of me..
Whether driving my car or in a public trans, I always wear my seatbelt.. I dont need d FRSC guys to remind me of doin that... Working there for years changed my mindset.. made me more conscious of my environ... Yes this was made possible because the company enforced it and the company enforced it because if anything should go wrong as a result of safety neglect, everyone suffers it from the boss to the person involved. Reports go as high as shell global and it even affects the KPI of the Managing Director....
Now all these are possible because there is a global body that checkmates them. A lot of people who work there and those who have worked there have a high level of safety consciousness because it was enforced by a company who takes safety very serious.

The point am trying to hit is this, if companies dont enforce safety attitude and also provide PPEs for the jobs, the workers will work unsafe.. As a matter of fact, a lot of companies here in Nigeria do not even allow safety auditors into their sites... A lot in order to cut cost, get the indians and filipinos who are slave drivers to manage their sites... In such companies, you cant go their and insist on using PPEs to work.. They will kick you out and say you are not ready to work.

Nigerian are law abiding people only when laws are enforced. If we dont have regulatory bodies who will enforce laws and discipline offenders, no one will listen...

There is no time we are ever gonna be ripe for such investment knowing the country we belong to. While Nigeria lacks that maintenance culture, it is time the govt takes it serious to invest in sections of Engineering such as Maintenance Engineering starting now so that we become used to it before the nuclear power plant is constructed in 2035. Try with the 'little' we have such as roads, existing thermal power and hydro power stations, existing facilities till the Nigerian populace is satisfied with the way we handle things. We can't keep depending on foreigners to help us maintain our facilities.
Then again, the govt has to embark on an awareness campaign highlighting the pros and cons of such plant. I mean, we wouldn't want hoodlums sneaking in to 'steal' a component or community people trying to shut down the plant with violence simply because it is located around their community, teaching them that this is different from the normal gas plants they normally sabotage the pipes supplying the plants and honestly, I think we need to run the media campaign for more than four years till the message sinks in.
BTW, ain't that amount too much for a nuclear power plant with that kinda power output?
CC: netotse - your contribution will be highly appreciated. . .
I so much appreciate ur input. You spelt it all. Viewing it from the safety angle, there is a pretty thin line between a nuclear power plant and a nuclear weapon. looking at the stage the nation is currently, with vandalism, strikes, lack of motivation for the workforce, salary owed workers by govt, community issues like u mentioned and etc... Do you think media campaign would be sufficient?
I visited a cement plant here in Nigeria just last year, I saw the way cement dust was bin flared with reckless abandon... you dare not park your car close to the plant over nyt else it would be covered in dust... and the bad thing is dat the plant is sited in a community where people live. Even the people who work there go about their duties with no nose masks... One of the staff even confided in me dat some of his colleagues died from cement caked in their bloodstream...
I have been to gas plants where people smoke cigarettes close to major gas pipelines... I see a lot of people ascend scaffolds without body harnesses...
Talk also abt the substandard materials too.. I know a Gas process plant that was built using substandard materials..
with all these mentioned above, I get scared to the marrow when I hear such news... The govt have a lot to do.. They need to show us we can trust them b4 they can bring such things here.... A lot of mind sanitization needs to take place.... Govt regulatory bodies need to get serious with their work and not seat and loot money....
For the money part.. $80 billion is too much for such a power output.

Science/TechnologyNigeria In Rosatom Talks For Up To $80 Billion Nuclear Power by xdos(op): 1:06pm On Apr 14, 2015
Nigeria is in talks with Russia’s Rosatom Corp. to build as many as four nuclear power plants costing about $80 billion as Africa’s biggest economy seeks to add 1,200 megawatts of capacity by the end of the decade.
“A joint coordination committee is in place and negotiations are ongoing for financing and contracting,” Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Franklin Erepamo Osaisai said at a conference in Kenya’s Kwale coastal region on Monday. “We are meticulously implementing our plans.”
The West African nation signed an agreement with Rosatom to cooperate on the design, construction, operation and decommissioning of a facility in 2012. A further three nuclear plants are planned, taking total capacity to 4,800 megawatts by 2035, with each facility costing $20 billion, Osaisai said. The first Nigerian plant will be operational in 2025.
Peak electricity output of Africa’s biggest economy is about 3,800 megawatts, with a further 1,500 megawatts unavailable because of gas shortages. South Africa, with a third of Nigeria’s population yet eight times more installed capacity, has also signed an agreement with Rosatom as the nation looks to add 9,600 megawatts of atomic power to its strained grid.
South Africa’s agreement with Rosatom gave the company the right to veto the nation doing business with any other nuclear vendor, Johannesburg-based Mail & Guardian reported in February.
Cooperation Meeting
Rosatom and Nigerian officials met last month within the framework of a 2009 intergovernmental agreement to discuss cooperation, Rosatom spokesman Sergei Novikov said by phone from Istanbul. To date, no memorandums have been signed about the development of a nuclear plant, he said.
Rosatom will hold a majority, controlling stake in Nigeria’s nuclear facility while the rest will be owned by the country, with roles to be specified in contracts, Osaisai said. “The government will enter a power-purchasing agreement for the nuclear plant.”
The plants will be financed by Rosatom, which will then build, own, operate and transfer them to the government, he said.
Rosatom is marketing its reactors with generous financing offers as Moscow seeks new markets for its technology amid a looming recession. Over the last year, its international portfolio of orders has grown to more than $100 billion, including deals to build new reactors in Iran, Hungary, India and Jordan.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Russia agreed last year on a 12 billion-euro ($12.7 billion) deal to expand the Paks nuclear power plant, scrapping plans for competitive bids for the biggest Hungarian public contract in a generation.
Under the deal, which Hungary’s parliament classified for 30 years, Russia agreed to provide 10 billion euros for the project in a 30-year loan at below-market rates. Hungary is in talks with the European Union after the bloc raised objections that Russian companies had exclusive rights to supply fuel to the plant and started a probe of possible state aid in the financing of the project.
One megawatt is enough to provide energy to 2,000 average European homes.
Africa’s sole nuclear power station is Koeberg in South Africa, which is owned by state-owned Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd.

After she must have left my house, I'll now talk to my wife... I'll rebuke her for fighting with an elderly woman.. For her to fight with my mum is purely lack of respect for me... She would have simply gone to her room and wait for me to come back and handle the issue myself.

May I authoritatively inform the writer of that piece that the Nigeria E passport is as date one of the most respected today in the world because of its high security features. It is in fact second to the United States passport in meeting ICAO standard.
Granting or refusal of visa is based not on the Country’s passport but other issues some of which are as follows ;
Confidence of the appplicant during interview
●Evidence of strong ties at home to prove that the applicant is not abandoning home
●Evidence of livelihood to prove that applicant will not be a public charge in host Country
Previous travel history hence the question have you travelled before is more important than people think
●It's always a good proof of financial independence when you book a reservation and pay for at least a night rather than filling your relation's address as the place to stay in the States
●Age is also important. Do you look as old as you claim?
●Dress neatly and not to impress
●Never appear desperate, be relaxed.
●Never be in a hurry to produce any document except when it's requested for
Good luck
Sir, my first travel outside naija was to the United States... I wasnt that confident especially when I was asked questions yet I got the VISA. They asked abt my job, places I'll visit when I get there... They didnt even request for much document....

Depends on what you see as 'maga'... A successful man is a man who makes more than his woman can spend... I took a girl out to an eatery. She ordered more than she could eat.. oh Yes, I paid... to her maybe.. she's got a maga..... To me.. She's just a hungry girl... All depends on how you see it...

The only time I classify a guy as a maga is when he spends more than he has or can afford on a gurl just to impress her... That is stupidity..

What we have in Nigeria are touts and criminals on police uniforms.. Do not try those ones at Elele road (Rivers) linking Imo state. All those ones think about is how to milk you dry.. Sometimes they even follow you to the ATM at Elele roundabout especially if you drive an SUV..
They have really dealt wiv me severally cos of my tinted glass angry grin grin grin.. .. Bunch of criminals on uniforms...
TravelRe: 15 Most Expensive Hotel Rooms In Nigeria by xdos(m): 8:41am On Mar 18, 2015
A lot of people do and a lot of people have permanent rooms there. though hotels are outrageously expensive in Naija than in Western world especially the US.
