Kings are not essential to maintaining laws, the Greeks had something similar, and the Romans before Caesar (509 BC- 27 BC)

Maybe you should read up Igbo culture, you seem so interested.

Some Igbo communities have heriditary kingship (son takes over from father), other have a royal lineage (kingship rotates among certain families), while others practically elect their Igwes or have them appointed by the state governor.
Historically, outside Onitsha, Agbor and Aro, most Igbo communities do not have kings.

One thing people who are not Igbos (and some modern day Igbos) fail to realise is that before the coming of the Europeans Igbos were fragmented politically and Igbo communities had little to do with one another besides their immediate neighbours.
Consequently, there is wide variation in Igbo culture.

This is not true.
In parts of Enugu State if a man dies without a son his eldest daughter inherits and her children carry on her father's lineage.

Would you have preferred she dismiss it off hand? Or agreed with you during the discussion but ignore your advice and not apply it.

I'm not sure our laws allow common-law marriage. Even in places where it is practised...

Section 166 of our Evidence Act provides that court will presume marriage where there is cohabitation as husband and wife by man and woman.
