WebmastersRe: Google Now In Hausa And Yoruba by yawatide(f): 6:16pm On Jan 19, 2009
Nigeria is only getting "recognition" cos of the volunteers who put in the time, not google.

I support what afam has said though - if the results are going to be in english, y bother? Or is there a phase 2 for this (I doubt it) that they aren't talking about?

By the power of genetics, it means u hv a 1 in 4 chance of having a child with SS.  Check out www.facefoundationinc.org for more information

If you want to still get married, at least you go in with your eyes wide open.  This is more about your kids, if you plan on having any, not you and/or your girlfriend.  I know a couple with 2 kids that hv SCD.  It is not fun with tem.  Monthly, they are in the hospital at least 1 week, and they are in the states so at least they have access to the best medical care.

At least you 2 summed up the courage to get tested for whatever conditions that you may have.  For that, I give you an A+.  Such couples I dare say are hard to find in Nigeria, generally speaking.

pintogen,

Wow! After your latest rant, I will give you A+ on your "customer service/salesmanship" skills.  I bet you sign up even less ppl than you set out to sign up.

Lesson of the day: Be quick to listen but slow to speak.  Even the Bible advocates that.

Peace!

meetnoedig,

And therein lies my frustration. Why must there be an "it's okay by nigerian standard" level? Why can't it be an international web standard, even if Nigeria's standard is higher than the international?
WebmastersRe: How Do I Go About It? by yawatide(f): 10:09pm On Jan 15, 2009
Depending on wat type of site, I foresee no more than 3 pages:

1) Home page welcoming ppl and telling them what to do
2) search page
3) results page

From how you have posed the request, I will assume you don't know ajax in which case it would require only 2 pages so letz go with the above scenario. You will need a backend language (PHP, JSP, etc) for this to work though.

On your search page, you could have a dropdown of all alphabets or provide the alphabet listing with links like so:
<a href="search-results.php?search=a">A</a>

Then when you click "A", it takes you to the search results page. From there again, there r 2 possible scenarios, again, depending on what you want to do:

1) database approach (preferred):
query the database for, in this case, "A", and display results pulled from the database OR

2) non-database approach:
Have one big search-results page with all the results, then using say, PHP, conditionally show portions of the file depending on the letter selected.
WebmastersRe: Web Design Solution by yawatide(f): 8:29pm On Jan 15, 2009
More than likely, you are probably using features of FP that are specific to Internet explorer.  As a quick test, make a backup of the file, delete *everything* in the said file, and just have "hello world" in it.  Then upload said file and view in both IE and FF.  If it shows, then that was the problem.  If not, then sorry pal, cos unless someone knows the answe, u r SOL.

Either way, consider using an actual text editor (notepad, notepad+, homesite, dreeamweaver, etc). Sure, you will be required to know how to code from scratch but you will be better off for doing so.
WebmastersRe: Nigerian Internet Population, Do We Really Measure Up To Expectation? by yawatide(f): 8:25pm On Jan 14, 2009
I will spk to the latter. Sorry to say so but we don't keep accurate statistics. There are probably more than the amount you quoted. 10 million is less than 10% and I find it hard personally to blv that it is this low:

1) 24 hour *uninterrupted* electricity supply
2) No more reselling of bandwidth by ISPs. This would eliminate using 30 mins. to pull up Ymail at a cafe.
3) Free market competition, as opposed to unionization. This would help bring prices down.
4) No more VSAT - try using your connection during the rainy season. 'nuff said. We need cables laid underground.
5) Solid network backbone architecture built from the ground up. No more patch patch.
WebmastersRe: Kano Pillars Fc Website by yawatide(f): 8:17pm On Jan 14, 2009
Yes, because no contents now, I like Eyimba's webite also, it looks very professional, but I don't have the damn time to make it like Eyimba's site. Imagine, I made that in less than 24 hours (Installation of joomla and all modules, components and customization). So I think if I spend more time on the site I will present more "bam".
Hmmm, when you say you don't have the damned time, does that imply you weren't paid any damned money (as in, it wasn't part of your statement of work)? wink

You did the site in less than 24 hours? No wonder. How do you measure the success of a website project? By how many you can churn out per hour or by how solid your architecture is by project hand off (layout, maintainability, reuse, etc)? I bet you that in developing the site in such haste, you probably forgot (as in, you knew about them but were so busy trying to get it out the door, or did you know? cool) about certain things.

As a rule, even if I can get a site done in 24 hours, I tell the client it will take at least 2 weeks. This allows for a solid architecture, testing and incorporating any feedback from the client, etc. Web dev is not a competitive game, it's a business and we should treat it as such. Granted some might use it to earn extra money, there are some (like me grin) who use it to put food on the table. Doing crappy work gives all of us a bad name.

Take the above into consideration when next you do a site. I bet you will thank me at some point wink

I c. Still don't know y you couldn't put it in the HEAD section. The way it is now, it's bad code. Getting a script from somewhere doesn't mean you can't modify it.

Please note, I am just asking why it can't be done and not that it shouldn't be done, granted my comment on it being bad code still stands.

b gentle? as if u were gentle with the guy who did the bathroom site? LOL Do unto others my friend tongue

Site looks not wonderful but ten-derful!! But knowing me, I just had to find some issues wink

1) Your XHTML doesn't validate. For one, you have a js function right abv ur doctype. I guess if you use FF, and hv the web developer toolkit, you would be able to see and rectify ur errors.

2) I would either remove the section with the "experience it here" buttons or if it's there, line them up with the text. I am leaning towards teh former cos I am using 1024x768 and just noticed that there is an actual content area but it is hard to notice if you don't scroll down and that is in part cos of the area with the buttons. Why does teh guy with the globe have to be on all pages? Perhaps if you removed that, or maybe limited to home page, it would be easier to find the content area.

3) i want to contact us online, i click "feedback" but again, cos of the buttons section and the guy and globe section, I don't see anyting. I then scroll down and don't find a form. I guess you aren't finished yet and again, I think you need to remove some sections to bring the content area up a bit.

That's about it man. Good job! Even without the above, I would give u 9/10 (sorry, had to be selfish with the last "1" till you fix the above grin)
WebmastersRe: .. by yawatide(f): 4:04pm On Jan 12, 2009
1) no contact us form. Why?

2) I am interested in the thing with the price: Marble Top Dec (W01) Price: #189,000.00. what country uses "#" for a currency symbol? How many of those can I get for $1? tongue

3) of all your pages, this is by far the best huh huh : http://www.decporisbathrooms.com/purchase.html

4) b/w the animation in the logo area and the scrolling text, I am sort of confused as to what I should concentrate on. Meanwhile, I am pretty sure what you actually want me to do is purchase a product and not c how good u r with flash. Oh, I forget, referring to #3 above, I can't puchase anything. You just lost my business cool

5) When you say "under construction", it would be nice to tell us what you are actually done with. That would save ppl like me, who actually grill down to the foundations of your website, a ton of time. I have clicked on each product page and they are blank. angry angry

That should do it.
WebmastersRe: Date Script Needed by yawatide(f): 1:27pm On Jan 12, 2009
I would advise you use javascript for your solution, assuming you are talking about displaying current date. Why? because unlike say, PHP/JSP that uses server time, Javascript uses browser time or time on the client's machine.

In other words, if the server is in Nigeria and I access your site at 7pm naija time, I will see 7pm on my browser in the US and that would be wrong cos it would be 1pm where I am. On the other hand, javascript would display 1pm on my end and 7pm on yours, again cos it goes by the client's clock, not the server.

As omni says, do some googling. You could also check out http://irt.org/script/script.htm or dynamicdrive.com

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: Kano Pillars Fc Website by yawatide(f): 10:11pm On Jan 11, 2009
1) Make the logo/banner area at least 1/4 height of what it is now
2) Use some joomla plug-in to implement the "team" section. I am thinking photo gallery/slide show.

Perhaps you can use this for insipiration/motivation (done by a fellow NLer and also a CMS): http://www.enyimbafc.net/

Note, I said, "use this for insipiration/motivation" as opposed to "lift" but of course, we all know you wouldn't do that  tongue

Other than that, pie1ct has said it all.
WebmastersRe: Neeed A Website Ugently by yawatide(f): 5:04pm On Jan 09, 2009
Let me see how to help you here:

"I need my car fixed. I need you to give me a rough estimate of how much it is going to cost"

Granted, many mechanics, especially in Nigeria would use the opportunity to bleed you dry as they will claim they did a comprehensive test only to fix 1 thing (which of course they don't tell you) and charge you as though they fixed 100 things, I don't think this is the way to go on posts like this. How about:

I need a website to help advertise my law firm. I don't know how many pages it will require but I guess we can talk more about this when you contact me. Oh by the way, I would love to see your portfolio.

I think the above sounds better and many developers on here would find that more inviting wink The way you are going, personally I would immediately quote you N500K because I am afraid you want the whole world and I wouldn't want to start low, then you haggle me lower only for me to do more work than I am paid for.

Think about it

ProgrammingRe: Graceful Degradation On Non Javascript Enabled Browsers - Must We Do This? by yawatide(f): 5:04pm On Jan 08, 2009
As a business man I have realized that one must choose his customers just as companies choose their employees, you cannot be everything to everyone.
Very true, hence my "target audience" comment above wink

Nice job with the site by the way. This is what ajax is all about - functionality and not necessarily for the eye candy factor.
ProgrammingRe: Graceful Degradation On Non Javascript Enabled Browsers - Must We Do This? by yawatide(f): 4:12pm On Jan 08, 2009
Afam,

True that probably 90% (give or take) of web apps out there use javascript in some shape, form or fashion and that probably 90% (give or take) of users out there have javascript enabled by default (and probably a good number of that 90% are unaware that they can disable javascript in the first place). Having said that, there is that "silent minority" who for example use screenreaders to read web pages and these don't interprete javascript. Also, if your cell phone/PDA is like mine, you can't get your device to display the "auto complete" portions of textboxes. So for those people, you have to degrade gracefully. Either that or offer an alternative site, though I would go with the former if and where possible.

Of course, it all boils down to your target audience. One thing to note though: If you are working for the US govt or even the UK govt I blv or some large corporation in any of these countries, you could stand the chance of being sued by people who can't access your site's full features. In the US for example, I blv Bank of America was sued once.

In conclusion, even if 100% of your users don't turn off javascript, it is still good, as a matter of courtesy, to at the very least inform them via "noscript" tags that hey, they might want to turn on javascript to enjoy the site fully. I would even go as far as listing some of those benefits as a form of enticement.

Make sense?

good luck!
WebmastersRe: Looking For Any Script/Service? Please Check Here. by yawatide(f): 9:22pm On Jan 07, 2009
I guess it depends on your host's bandwidth and storage limitations.

I would rather you host them on your site as you could do things like mine visitor data, have google ads on the site and increase the chances of clicks, increase the google ranking of your site, add more value to ur biz and website, etc. With rapidshare, it's like your site never existed.

That's my take on the matter. What do u think?
WebmastersRe: First Quiz Of 2009 by yawatide(op): 8:10pm On Jan 07, 2009
Hmmm, I guess we are going to start off 2009 the same way we ended 2008 - silence with respect to quizzes but activity with respect to "free dumps", "site reviews", "tutorials", etc.  Oh well, hopefully we all get to learn regardless.

dhtml,

Took a look at your solution.  Didn't want to test but you made me do it  when you stated that you tested it or I guess I don't know what this means tongue
i have gone beyond the level of actually testing it - i use crossplatform dhtml techniques.
I too "just wrote that just now", with "no downloaded code from anywhere - that is straight from my head" wink

Sure, there are 1001 ways of approaching a solution but there are also better ways as well.  I think my solution is better (I even borrowed a few things from your solution too  cool).  Why?  Funny you should ask:

1) Mine's cleaner (less code, semantic markup, easier to read, code is indented properly, etc).  I am willing to ignore this one though as it is beyond the scope of this post.

2) Unlike you, I actually tested in FF and IE (The layout for yours is messed up in both browsers and the alignment of the tooltip is off in IE6)

Having said that, you did tackle the issue as stated and for that, I don't know about a "price" as the solution wasn't fully tested but I will give it to you for effort.  How's that? grin
