JJYOU: wrong board. This has already been covered on another owner: I think it's not that they don't want to be contacted but that they don't know how to implement one, complete with front- and back-end validation ![]() |
coolscotty, Call me a spoiler but I browse exclusively with FF and noticed that there is horizontal scroll, courtesy of the username/password boxes that extend beyond the container. When I see something like that, it turns me off, no matter how good the functionality of the site is. It wreaks of unprofessionalism (is this a word? ). How hard would it have been for those guys to test the site properly before launching? Also, the house in the banner, it doesn't represent the layout of any house anywhere in West Africa. Again, call me a spoiler and someone with bad belle but certain things either turn me on or off completely and just those 2 items (of many) have turned me off the site you showed us, no matter how good the listings might be. |
According to the news article, the site is going down, "as a result of the inability of government officials to maintain the national flagship." What a shame! That site staying up is a matter of national security. When I posted this, I got like 3 responses. Probably many laughed behind my back. How about posting comments on that news article saying you are willing to undertake ownership of the site? Don't you think Akunliyi will notice and perhaps give you the job? Now, will more sign up for this? Questions, questions, answers, answers. The site goes down in March. I say we get something in place by end of January. In the meantime, post comments on all major newspaper sites in Nigeria saying you are willing to undertake the project and for those with hook ups in the media (TV and radio), do same. You never know where this might lead. Think about it people. This might just be your chance. |

The 2nd paragraph of that error msg states that you should check your server logs. Have you done that? Either way, you can always contact your web host. Other possible reasons: You don't have an index file and probably need to type the full file path to see the page, Site is down due to lack of payment, web host performing maintenance and domain name has expired, to mention but a few. |
Yes it is possible. You will need to contact a streaming video/audio company in europe to get their rates. In the US for what I researched, they charge per package or per user with respect to bandwidth. Since you are in europe, why not check out how UEFA has implemented their functionality? Visit www.uefa.com, check out what they charge users, check out the company offering this (I think realplayer), contact them and go from there. Good luck! |
No offense kris but "a lot" will not "have to be removed", if done right. Even if, there is a proverb in my language which literally translates to, "there is nothing like it takes a long time when you do something that is good". Take for example the 1st attached screenshot: Notice all the white space around it? I just shaved off the white space in FW and got back 40px. All I would need to do next is proportionately size the image to get it to about 1015 or so (it can't be 1024 exactly as you have to take into account the vertical scroll bar). All you may have to do at that point is shift the DJ's image to the left a little. See 2nd screenshot for how the resized bg1 might look. I think the main issue with how you went about the site is how you hv sliced your background images. I probably would have made the "blue sky" image one big background, positioned it relative, then positined the DJ and his "rainbow wave" effect (as one image) absolutely. The way you have it now, I can see why you might be reluctant to do anything. Just my humble opinion.

I am just starting an ajax script section on http://ds.mwebng.net/ [if u don't know what ajax is all about, don't bother visiting]Now, dhtml, not a nice thing to say there, wouldn't you agree? I mean, were you born, no offense, with an ajax spoon in your mouth yourself? - i don't mean to sound rude, but u just wont get it.You don't know that for a fact. Just cos it might have taken you 30 seconds to learn ajax doesn't mean it won't take me 15 seconds. Just do it and let the chips fall where they may. |
kris, I do see the entire site, with the scroll but you should really take a stab at cleaning it up ![]() At the very least, i feel i should be able to see the complete dimensions of the video, not half. I use 1024x768 and I browse exclusively with FF. Screenshot is attached with this post.

No problem castrol. YIM me and get it now or email me and get it within 24 hours. Your call ![]() |
(wakes up from slumber, having sworn she heard someone mention her name )castrol: 1) Nice carousel on your portfolio page. It would be even cooler if clicking each thumbnail took you to the respective sites. 2) My works are not for public display. I am not here to impress or to compete with anybody, only to learn and to teach. If you want to see them, email me (yes, my email is listed on NL). (goes back to sleep) |
IBEXY, refer to the #2 of my first post above for the reason. At least you follow notice am. At least for now, I can rest assured that I am not going crazy ![]() |
kris, I like your professionalism. I am however still seeing horizontal scroll in FF and it is probably cos of this CSS attribute in your #wrapper - width:1097px; Most ppl surf using 1024px so as you can see, you are off by at least 70px. See what you can do about that. |
diasporan, i see living in the diaspora has turned ur mouth rotten. oh well. |
beewhyfocs, I wish Fashola well, I really do. However, one word sticks in my memory - TINAPA. Case closed. |
Speak ENgliSh Please, lol, are u sure the owner of that site will even understand this review you gave?/Actually I am cos i know the guy and we have chatted many times and I can say for a fact that he knows where I am coming from ![]() Either way, if he didn't, I would expect him to be honest enough to come back and either ask for explanation or contact me privately ![]() |
Speaking for myself, I don't do blogs - it's not your original work, even if you customized it. |
1) Change the font. 2) In FF, the "Editor's note" appears twice and it is because the content in the upper one is too "long", thus causing the fixed height/width background to repeat itself. Here is how I would have done that part, as opposed to how you have it now: http://blueprintpublication.com/editor.jpg a) Declared a DIV and position it relative b) Give the DIV from (a) the gradient-green background and repeat-x c) Give the DIV from (a) a left border of say, 10px solid #ccc; d) Drop the "editor note" and "kate" images in the DIV, position them absolute and give them top and left positions ("kate" would actually get top and right) That right there, especially if applied to other similar scenarios would cut your page weight in at least half There is nothing much else to comment on as the site is very, very incomplete. How about in the future, if you say the site isn't complete, tell us what exactly to test for to avoid wasting each other's time? ; |
sitepath, If there is no point arguing, why are you continuing then? ![]() By the way, I am reasoning, not arguing and yes, there is a difference. Marketing takes different forms. Word of mouth is one of them. I however, never heard of ip4 b4 and as has been stated millions of times, am going by what i read in the news. Even after hearing about them, I never bothered going there. Why? For one, I have no need to. If by the time I want to buy some real estate, I go to nethomes (forever burnt into memory cos of the newspaper article) and there is nothing to my taste there at the time, then I will go to the next, in this case, ip4 based on this post. Simple. |
1) not necessarily 2) Already in place 3) Already in place 4) Not necessarily: You could have somename (not as readable), someName, some-name, or even some_name nice try though. I give you "A" for attempt. Any other takers? |
Okay, so I recently had this issue happen to me. Here is a snippet (from view source): on or before <span class="someName"></span>or elseNote: 1) span is empty on purpose. It is AJAX driven. It prints out a date (like december 10, 2008) 2) there is no space b/w the close span and "or" You see where this is going? The date needed a white space just before the "or". I tried everything from adding a literal white space to using " " but it didn't work. I also went into the javascript code that was printing out the AJAX date and added the same 2 white spaces, to no avail. Also, applying styling via the CSS class name didn't work. It was very weird. I guess something in the AJAX call threw something off or maybe some other code on the page was overriding something. After like 3 hours, I finally found a solution. Before I give it out, let's see who else is up for an early xmas gift ![]() As always, I will let a few posts go by before i respond. Good luck! |
olushola, so let me sort of regurgitate wat i said earlier, albeit maybe in a different form: Up until it was brought up, i never heard of ip4. I never heard of nethomes either until I saw it in an online newspaper. Now, content or no content, if you see something like that in the news, wouldn't that make you give them some sort of pass, even with little or no content. Remember, we aren't talking you and I hear but Bamidele and Okoro who probably only visit a cybercafe once a week at best and who probably don't have the money or resources (gen, etc) to afford them the ability to even watch news consistently. My point again is: If ip4 is that good, then let them hit nethomes hard with a marketing campaign of their own. Again, and I stand corrected and I speak as someone who visits at least 8 Nigerian online newspapers a day for the past 3 years, I haven't seen anything on ip4 except this week on this board. |
and how does this win the best web designer award in nigeriaSimple: On a, "I will scratch your back if you scratch mine" basis. |
I don't have to learn from silicon valley. I want silicon valley to rather come learn from Potiskum hills. Be original damn it! ![]() Anyways, as I said before and will say now, it's all about marketing. Of course the flip side of the coin is that you back up your marketing with what you are actually marketing (I wouldn't exactly call that strategy ) otherwise you would be blowing hot air out where the sun doesn't shine. So again, I will give them A+++ for marketing. |
i wd take coolng off the list for the mere fact that there is horizontal scroll, at least in FF. Whatz that? I hear you say, it isn't the case in IE? Well, if that is the case, that is more reason y the site shouldn't b on the list as it isnt cross-browser compliant. |
sitepath, pepsi might taste better than coke but with good marketing, coke has managed to convince the world that they are the best. how? Marketing. I monitor Nigerian news addictively and haven't heard of any real estate company that has claimed to be the first. Just reading that has made me skeptical of ip4properties. In other words, nethomes will probably get to critical mass much quicker than ip4, which is what matters in our web2.0 world. |
The boss has to let the guy's creative juices flow or as you said, dude needs to check out of there. Pure and simple. I outsource to someone right now. I search the web for sites of the competition. I take the good and dump the bad. i forward all URLs to my outsourcee and forward my notes on observations and technical specifications. My last paragraph in the email I send to him is, "don't let my ideas get in the way of your creativity". In the end, he produces masterpieces. So again, the boss needs to be told (diplomatically of course) that his job is to manage affairs of the company and not get down in the trenches. If he feels that strongly about it, then he needs to be the one working in those trenches. Gosh! I hate micro managers and when I apply for jobs I let the interviewers know that as well |
LOL, I am envisioning him being my opponent in the video game, "Mortal Kombat" "Finish him (I deliver deadly blow)" "Fatality (I rip his head off)" "Perfect victory (I grab him by the balls)" LMAO! |
A website is basically an online version of a catalog - no db interactions, no business logic, etc. Basically like a point and click camera, you click from page to page in search of information. A web app on the other hand includes db interactions, personalization, business logic, among others. So, take me for example. My biz website is actually a website. All I am doing is advertising my biz to the world. On the other hand, websites I have done for ppl that allows them to log in, update/review their profiles, etc, would be deemed as a web app. |
I guess you know it's bad when even the owner says you shouldn't use it. This post should hopefully make many of you start using the greatest browser out there right now - FireFox ![]() http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/16/AR2008121601022.html Browser bug has yet to be fixed, and is spreading rapidly, reports say. A malignant security flaw found in all versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser has yet to be fixed, and the problem is spreading. Microsoft detailed the flaw in a security update blog post six days ago. Since then, the problem has spread across the globe, hitting at least 2 million computers. Unlike other computer exploits, this one does not require users to click on fishy links or download mysterious software: it plagues computers that simply open an infected Web page. Internet Explorer is currently used by 69 percent of Web surfers. The flaw hides inside the data binding function of the browser and causes IE to quit unexpectedly and reopen vulnerable to prying eyes. So far most of the attacks have been geographically centered on China and have been used for the purposes of stealing computer game passwords. But with a flaw as gap-toothed as this, the possibilities of nefarious action could include the massive theft of personal information such as administrative computer passwords and financial data. Even though there is currently no patch for this problem, Microsoft has offered a variety of workarounds. Most involve disabling or crippling the "oledb32.dll" file. Other methods include setting Internet and local intranet security zones to "high" and configuring Internet Explorer to prompt before running Active Scripting or to disabling Active Scripting. Though it's always wise to keep your antivirus software updated, it may not protect you in this case, as most antivirus software does not monitor Internet traffic. The easiest way to keep your computer safe is to stop using Internet Explorer. Even Microsoft offered that advice. And while other browsers aren't entirely devoid of bugs, they are a better alternative in this case. |
How are you saving your files? In notepad, if you don't select "all files" from the "save" or "save as" dropdown, your file will be saved like so, "flename.php.txt" so it is important that you select "all files" under the "file type" menu to preserve the .php extension. If you don't want to go that route, then enclose your file name in double quotes when you name it. Hopefully, this solves your problem using notepad. |
Folks, couldn't help it but share this with you all. Call it spreading the xmas love ![]() I am currently developing a site for a client who then refers me to a friend of his who in turn wants a site. As I talk to the friend, it turns out I know him and he knows I develop websites. He immediately says, "I actually have a website but it looks horrible. What pisses me off the most is that it is only after I paid the guy that I remembered that you do websites (is he lying? I don't know and don't care quite frankly though something says he is, but I digress)". He then shows me the site. Please bear in mind that the "webmaster" resides in the states (I bring this up as proof that being in a country where there is no lack for software/hardware doesn't guarantee, as someone YIMd me yesterday on, for quality work. There are bad apples everywhere): http://www.sub-saharanhealthnetwork.com/ I just look the site, I weak. He then says he will go back to his "partners" to see if the contract can be canceled. At least he admitted that the site sucks and is in need of major improvement. I give him that much. Something says the "webmaster" charged cheap which is why they "jumped" for his services in the first place. Personally, considering the site is still under construction, which is akin to foundation being laid, I would cancel it right now and "break down" all the "concrete". It's better now than later because, if I am to do the site, I am going to delete the crap anyways Of course, I didn't tell him that. Make d guy suffer for him mistakes small. Not to mention, chances are that he won't come back. Why give him the advice for free? ![]() Remember guys, some times, you get what you pay for. |
