I am happy you think because you are yet to provide any solid evidence to back up your claims. |
If you saw the old one, blv me, you would give the guy A for effort, that is, before you went to testing his form ![]() |
for some odd reason, i am thinking feyisara needs a script that can do what this site does ![]() www.instantdomainsearch.com |
Okay so no one wanted to answer my last quiz of 2008. No yawa, nothing spoil. But that won't keep me away ![]() visit this site: http://www.aittvusa.com/schedule/ hover over any of the links to the right like "sports watch". note where the div that appears is showing. Perhaps not a big deal to you but as you hover over the ones towards the end of the page, you start to notice that eventually you can't see any of the layer popups. IMHO, i think this is bad user experience as it prevents you eventually from seeing the show description. Also, at some point, it looks as though the description for one show is next to the title of another. I think the pop up should appear to the right of the links such that the bottom of the layer is on the same line as the show title. That way, you always see a popup, but hey, thatz just me. Take some time to view the source. Don't bother to point out the semantic errors as that isn't the reason why this popups are appearing where they are. Question: If I were to ask you to implement my solution in the 3rd paragraph, how would you make it happen? Oya, who will open the floor? |
switch, thanks for removing that scary face animation. You don't know how much money you stand to make without it, trust me. good luck! |
ah, I c wat u r trying to do ![]() For a small number of emails, you can use your webhost but they have limits. Enter the commercial guys. They have their own servers or rent space on some server and run the autoresponders for clients and charge accordingly. Make sense? |
refer to my original post for possible reasons. If you feel its too small and u r really good at what you do, then charge say 100K, see how clients respond, and then adjust your price moving forward accordingly. good luck! |
and you actually believe that people will post with the truth? ![]() I don't live in lagos but given the high cost of living and the competition there, I would say nothing less than 60K - 80K for a basic informational website (usually 5 or 6 pages, complete with a "contact us" page), depending on your level of experience. Please note, when I say, "nothing less than", I am not saying you should charge within that range but that you should charge nothing less than prices within that range. One cool way of finding out what your peers in the area are charging, though a little misleading IMHO, is by googling for web design firms in lagos, and checking out their packages. I said "misleading" earlier cos I have seen some site with prices starting at 15K, too small IMHO. Good luck! |
What kind of autoresponse? Email autoresponse? If yes, you can do that yourself in PHP. Google for "PHP email autoresponder sample code" and you will get tons of results. Also look at the PHP mail() function on like php.net. Good luck! |
uhhmm, and what's the difference b/w white students and black students? Aren't we all, at the end of the day, human beings? ![]() |
uhhmm, and what's the difference b/w white students and black students? Aren't we all, at the end of the day, human beings? ![]() |
blv me, u hvnt. Even if I don't use it now, blv me, there are ppl (much like u were, hmmm ) who are visiting this thread and appreciating all you have done so far, though they probably won't say a word ![]() |
Thanks guys for all your responses, granted I must confess it was a lil more than I was expecting ![]() Having said that, dhtml, I have responded to your question here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-212088.0.html It appears you have made a habit of asking me the same question all over the place ![]() That shouldn't take away from the solutions posted here though. To all, thanks once again. |
honorable dhtml ![]() Yes, I saw your script (all 10 pages of it ) as well as your posts on various threads asking if I have seen the script ![]() It is a little much for what I had in mind (for a site I did for free) but not to worry, as long as NL is alive, I will know that I can always search for it should I need to do such. Even if NL is dead by then, you dey my buddy list ![]() |
dhtml, I didn't say that hence, my "has/had" comment above. I always leave myself enough wiggle room ![]() My point: If he is done, and I assume he is, then this thread is closed. If there are ppl who want to go on an ego trip, be my guest but not on this thread. You can always create another thread for that and post your pros and cons. Make sense? Personally, I will be removing my notifications from this thread very shortly ![]() |
I second kehers as I was disappointed for the past 2 wks. Now, there are so many posts, I can barely keep track. back to your issue: What is the URL? Is it using some kind of software (as in CMS, blog, etc)? If yes, you won't hear a word from me as I only comment on what you do from scratch (scratch as in, you start off by typing the doctype). Thanks and good luck in 2009! |
Soooo, Does this thread exist for the purpose of chest-thumping or to help the original poster with a problem that he has/had? ![]() Think about this folks, as we are not even 10 days into 2009. |
I need to start visiting NL less but alas, I can't. I am addicted as hell ![]() On a more serious note, I made a resolution to code at least 1 (paid, cos I did a few free ones as well) site a month in 2008. I ended up coding 6. So my achievement for 2009 has changed - it is to charge money such that if I do only 3 or 4, it will be as if I coded 12 sites. In other words, offer top quality work and charge accordingly. |
First and foremost, I want to really thank Abidemi and dhtml for their posts. This is EXACTLY what I craved for in 2009 and beyond. This shows that we have matured from the "site review" days. Once again, thanks. Since my site uses PHP, I would be tempted to use the dhtml approach. One looking at it further though, granted it is some pretty nifty code, I have a question: $search = array("src='images", "src='canada.gif","src='imeages.gif", "src='zenith.gif", "src='punch.gif","a href",'src="/',"<script","</script"I assume that the $search part of the code has to do with the various ads on the punch site right? If yes, then does this imply that I have to do same for each paper that I access? If yes, imagine if I have 100 papers to peruse. That would be a nightmare. Do I hear you say, "yawa na wa for you o! ok, if it bugs you that much, don't use that part"? Okay I hear you o! I don't have to but I just had a question okay? ![]() Once again, thanks to the 2 posters. |
Pretty interesting Abidemi and dhtml. How about each of you post your solutions on the forum so we all can take a peek and perhaps debate on the pros and cons of each as well as decide which is best? Thanks for your input. Wow! 2009 is rolling to a good start, posts-wise ![]() |
that is correct scottN but again, I think you miss my point which is - what are tables for? Let me use an example (assume all necessary divs are floated): A) <div id="container"> <div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div> <div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div> <div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div> <div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div><div class="one">1</div> <br style="clear: both;" /> </div> AND B) <table id="someTable" cellspacing="0"> <tr> <td>1</td><td>1</td><td>1</td><td>1</td> </tr> <tr> <td>1</td><td>1</td><td>1</td><td>1</td> </tr> <tr> <td>1</td><td>1</td><td>1</td><td>1</td> </tr> <tr> <td>1</td><td>1</td><td>1</td><td>1</td> </tr> </table> Which makes more sense **semantically**? Your call. Also: Also: 1) In some cases, you have to use a TH for your table headings. Sure, this could be done in the DIVs but that would require styling. 2) the above assumes all cells are the same width. If not, you have to declare even more classes 3) overuse of classes and DIVs in css is called "classitis" and "divitis" respectively - very bad diseases ![]() 4) I see huge maintainnability issues |
court isn't hereby adjourned just yet ![]() Where did the term "plain javascript" come from cos I hv never heard the term. I am not saying it doesn't exist, but I have never heard it. Neither have I heard "pure javascript" at least with respect to difference b/w it and AJAX. I think these terms, even if you heard it from the founder of AJAX himself, are misleading as even I got misled. To me, saying something is "plain" or "pure" implies there is a "non-plain" and "impure" version and those last 2 sound a bit dirty to me. I guess I think differently. I am thinking food right now. I come to your restaurant and I ask which of the rice versons on your menu is better and you say, "well one is just plain rice and stew". I would be turned off at that point and probably never order your rice and stew, ever. Again, I know, I am a bit strange. I think you could have taken me to school much better if you just stuck with "AJAX uses XhR whereas your approach doesn't" or something like that. I probably wouldn't have commented further. Now, back to the question at hand so as to really rest your case (and mine as well), do you think all our posts combined is enough to help the poster? |
ScottN If you have a table that is say, 5 rows and 5 columns, which would you prefer? Floating a bunch of DIVs or using a straight up TABLE tag that does what it was intended to do: present tabular data? Think about it. afam4eva I think tis best to support such blanket statement claims with examples. Just my opinion. |
Using IMG tags adds weight to your files and if such files are heavy, you are in for double trouble. Using CSS for images, typically only works for backgrounds. I say if you need a background, declare in the CSS otherwise, use an IMG tag in the HTML. Having said that, though redundant, there is nothing wrong with you creating IMG tags in ur HTML like so: <img src="whateversource" id="headImg" /> then having in your CSS: img#headImg { width: 30px; height: 30px; border: 0; } though IMHO, after a while, you might end up with bulky CSS files doing this. I personally only use this approach if I have a bunch of images that share teh same dimensions and behaviours and in that case, I would use class not ID. |
Plain Javascript does not use XMLHttpRequest, everything is based on client side.(Clears throat, tweaks glasses (wait, I don't use glasses ), cracks knuckles, re-reads posts)I didn't say "plain" anywhere and the fact remains that the "J" as plain as it might be, is still "Javascript". By the way, what is the difference b/w "plain" javascript and "non-plain" javascript? Could I also say "plain" PHP and "non-plain" PHP? Just curious. Again, rather than impress some folks with our theoretical knowledge, I think we need to get back on track and talk about the issue at hand which in my opinion, is pretty much solved at this point. Please, let's not start 2009 off with the "do you know who I am" attitude. At the end of the day, it doesn't get us anywhere. Thanks. |
I wouldn't say "pretty bad" as tables do have their place. they are bad when you are using it for layout and not for presenting tabular data, the former being able to cause you to embed table upon table and even worse if you are not the indenting type All samples I would point to are in my free ebook ![]() |
Omni and larger, thanks. Omni, Yes, the site you showed is how my site works currently. That is the part in my post that I said I have since done. The issue I am having is what you will notice if you scroll the left column to where "punch" is and click the "punch" link. Notice what happens after a few seconds (hint: you are no longer on the site you sent me) Larger, Yes, the solutions you sent me are cross-site/dynamic scripting, very powerful concepts. I am liking your idea of using it to redefine the "punch" function that is causing the frame overriding. Having said that, I don't think it is efficent because there are 3 other good news sites that I also go to for news that have the same issue. Here are potential problems that I foresee with your approach: 1) What happens if Punch changes their function name tomorrow? 2) As I said, 3 other sites have the same behaviour. Am I to go searching on those sites for their overriding functions as well? If yes, refer to #1 above. Also let's not forget, I would then have to have separate function calls for each news site. Might be fine for 3 or 4 sites but what happens if I expand to 100 and 50 have the same behaviour? I will thus use what I am using now which is to "target=_blank" on those specific sites for now while looking for a better solution. Having said that, I do really appreciate your answers. We have all definitely learned something from this. By the way, there is a cool site that offers solutions to various javascript problems. Pretty much every perceivable javascript problem known to man is solved here and I am combing that site to see if they have a solution: http://www.irt.org/script/script.htm Good luck! |
Ooh smartsoft, so that was you I saw with wrapper and full make up the other day in church? What, may I ask, did you use to augment your chest area? LOL largerwhenindoubt, if you cdnt tell I am female from the "(f)" in my profile, I bow for you o ![]() Anyways, back to the post, I hope the poster gets the best qualified candidate. Good luck! |
Soooo, I think the situation has become similar to a car that is going very fast on the highway then suddenly meets a sharp bend, causing the driver to veer off course a little but then due to his driving experience, he is able to put the car back on course. Explanation: The poster originally wanted a way to dynamically generate number of textfields based on user selection. I handled that part. Where we all (that means, including me) went off course is the 2nd part of the equation where the poster asked for how to populate dropdown B based on selecting something in dropdown A. We are also veering off course with the lesson on session variables. The more we go into theoretical explanations on the pros and cons of session vars, IMHO, the more confused the poster gets. By the way, the poster hasn't told us anything about his budget constraints or how many users he anticipates his system will support, worse case so using session vars may not be a bad idea after all. I would also like to suggest using cookies if session vars are so much of a problem. Without scrolling up (sorry, I am a bit lazy ), I will say that there is a post that suggested that making the solution JavaScript based would eliminate the postback issue but be more difficult to update. The same post then goes ahead to suggest an AJAX solution. Question: What does the "J" in AJAX mean? If it is what I think it means, doesn't this negate the issue of "difficult to update"? Just curious.Having gone through each post again, I will agree with the post that the solution be AJAX-based. Having said that, you can still retain values with a postback. How? I am glad you asked: When the user makes a selection from the dropdown, it would trigger an "onchange" event. In that onchange function call, you do whatever code you need to do and your last line would be a call to "onsubmit()". This submits the form. Now, once the form is submitted, it passes along the form fields and their names/values. You could then do some form of backend logic like so: If formField value exists then echo formField Value in the for example, textfield else echo "" in the for example, textfield end if I hope this makes sense. If caching is a concern, then you cd tack on a timestamp value which will give you a guaranteed unique value each time the form is submitted. This would ensure that each postback yields a unique result. Again, I would rather go the AJAX route but if you are so inclined to go the postback route, u can do what I have explained above. |
As they say, practice what you preach. In 2008, I preached that in 2009, we should all post things from which we can teach and/or learn. This is my first of what promises to be many: I recently revamped my new site, basically a collection of links to other actual news sites. I decided, in order to maximize ad revenue, to go with frames. I don't like frames but in order to boost site traffic and increase the potential of people clicking on ads, I have decided to cast my "hatred" of frames to the side for the time being, but I digress. The idea is, the top frame (A) will have a header for my site while frame B has the website from which I am referencing for news. I am done with that part though. The issue arises with sites like punch where it seems they are detecting if they are being pulled up in a frame and if yes, they kick out of the frame into the main window, as if you accessed them directly. I have created a workaround in those cases by using "taget="_blank" as I don't want my site to lose focus but I am figuring there is a way around this and hence my question: Is there a solution out there that any of you know or have written than can check to see if thesite in question is sniffing for frames and if so, negate that sites's script, thus putting its site in frme B? Call it a "frames detector detector". I would appreciate your response(s). Thanks in advance. |
Na wa o! Na so we go take start 2009? I fear for una o!! ![]() |
