Nairaland GeneralRe: Is Nairaland/Webmasters As Fascinating As It Was When It Started? by yawatide(f): 8:48pm On Apr 04, 2012
yamakuza, actually this isn't a chicken/egg problem. It is quite clear cut as the egg always comes before the chicken. How do I know?

Well, in the evolutionary process, birds are said to be descendants of reptiles. Well, a chicken is a bird and most importantly perhaps, reptiles lay eggs. Therefore, a reptile laid the egg that gave birth to the first bird which eventually laid the egg that gave birth to the first chicken cool

Conclusion:
1) There was "something" that brought together perhaps the best minds that this board has ever had, prior to me joining the board. In some societies, a study would be made to find out what that "something" was, and as a solution, an effort would be made to bring back that "something". It isn't rocket science folks. It can be done. Once that "something" is found, trust me, the quality folks, and hence quality posts will start flocking back like flies flock to over-ripe mango (I would have said something else but the filters would catch it grin)

2) Assuming money is what is driving this site, it only makes sense that efforts be focused on the more productive boards. These boards in my opinion, the bane of any society, will fall under one of the following: entertainment, sex, relationships, politics.

The only way this board will return to prominence is to tackle the root cause of the problem and not the edges: lack of quality members which in turn breeds lack of quality posts.

Make the board such that quality folks come on board and in return, you will get quality posts that many will find worthy of contributing to or debating. Currently, the state of the board is so bad that we aren't even getting the customary request for web reviews. That says a lot to me.

I can't speak for the entire site but for this board in particular:
Over the last 5 years at least, the quality of both contributing members and board topics has been on the decline. Unfortunately, once such people leave, they hardly come back.

I hear someone ask, "so why are you still here?", to which I retort, "Interesting, but good question" - It's quite simple: My job affords me the luxury of sitting in front of a computer, with a T1 connection, for 8 hours a day. It therefore is only natural that I visit this board ever so often, even if all I do is stop at the landing page for the board. How long will this last? I honestly don't know, though I continuously pray that the board returns to what it was when I first joined NL.

I remember it like it was yesterday - I was so intimidated by the quality of the posts that it took me at least 3 weeks to make up my mind, with respect to whether or not I should join. These days, I feel like a big fish in a small pond (no boasting intended. I still have a long ways to go, with respect to learning).
WebmastersRe: JAMB Result Site Is DOWN Cannot Handle Concurrent Users Of 1.5m Candidates ? by yawatide(f): 6:37am On Apr 03, 2012
Quick temporary fix:
When people buy the "reshash kad" or whatever they call it for the purpose of checking their results, perhaps that card could be assigned a certain time slot when results with that card can be checked. Thus the cards could be printed such that it evenly divides the number of cards by say, 80% of the maximum number of concurrent users the site can handle.

Makes sense to me. . .

1) I am one of those who used to visit NL at least 2ce an hour, 8 hours each day and participate actively on the webmaster board, going back at least 3 years. I say "used to" because since the launch of the new NL, I only visit at most 3ce a day and for the most part (95% of the time) stick to the post listings

2) I have viewed the site on my tablet and it is actually looking good but on my laptop, it is very dizzying to me. I am mostly on my laptop and consider typing out a lengthy response via a mobile device as cumbersome. Moreover, I am not going to switch to my tablet just for NL.

3) It would be interesting to see the stats for NL, with respect to google adwords, since the launch of the new NL. I don't make a dime frm it and wish NL well revenue-wise but I have this hunch that both traffic and revenue has probably taken a little dip

4) I am currently working on projects at work with both a mobile and desktop experience. we are well aware of the stat that claims tht come 2014, there will be more mobile than desktop users and tht we have to code first for mobile users but that doesn't mean we throw away the baby with the bath water - we maintain two versions with each persona getting the version of the site tailored towards what they are using. IMHO, creating a site solely with one target audience in mind may prove suicidal. Let's not forget, the competition is watching
WebmastersBabalawo Don Enter Internet O! by yawatide(op): 10:13am On Mar 21, 2012
World don dey come to an end as, "Lagos herbalists embrace internet divination". I bet no one will dupe them and give them superior website. Also, make sure your juju strong pass dem own, otherwise u might be doing their site for free, he he

The procedure is to visit the website and fill a consultation form online. It is stipulated that one need not indicate his problem as the priest will use the bio data supplied to consult, identify the trouble and proffer solutions."

Gone is the era when herbalists and soothsayers are known by their shabby dressing, ignorant approach and house hangings as Babalawos in Nigeria especially those in Lagos and environs have embraced the use of technology and online divination to make their work easier as they now offer Ifa consultation on their websites.

When Asabe Bello first heard the advertisement on radio that she could have her problem solved by a Babalawo without actually visiting one, she was surprised, as all her life, she had thought that to get Ifa intervention to any problem, one must see an Ifa priest physically before she could consult and get such problems solved.

She, however, had a change of heart when she actually got in touch with one via a website and was given an identification code after filling a consultation form and told to pay a certain amount.

She was told what to do and given vivid directions on what to do to solve her problem which was described as a spiritual attack and she did. The consultations and the solution proffered gave her an understanding that contrary to expectations, Babalawos have moved on with the times and have embraced cyber technology.

"I know many Nigerians in the course of their daily work have embraced the use of technology but I was still surprised that even Babalawos now consult on websites. My idea of an herbalist is a dirty man in an unkempt environment with various hangings and dirty clay pots, so the experience was an eye opener," she told Inside Lagos.

In Lagos and its surrounding towns, more Ifa priests are making their business technology driven by making it accessible to many more people on the web. One of such is the Ajigbotifa Temple which is in an area near the suburb of Lagos.

The temple is advertised to have a mission 'to make man to live a fulfilled life. To professionally help man with the help of Olodumare and Ifa; to help man in overcoming both physical and spiritual problems, give foresight into the future, prosperity, health, good children, peace, love and more by communicating with us through the Holy Odus in IFA and proclaim Ifa, Olodumare and Holy Odus of Ifa supremacy to all nations of the world.'

To consult at this temple, one has to visit the website, www.Ajigbotifatemple.com. According to the website, Ajigbotifa Temple Limited is an Ifa religion based organisation in Nigeria; a registered company under Corporate Affairs Commission, Abuja, Nigeria that specialises in Ifa Olokun Asorodayo, with the motives of making man kind to live a fulfilled life.

The procedure is to visit the website and fill a consultation form online. It is stipulated that one needs not indicate one's problem as the priest will use the bio data supplied to consult, identify the trouble and proffer solutions. After the form is submitted, an acknowledgment is sent from the temple with a personal ID number and code given to the potential client after which the mode of payment is indicated and then the real business begins, all without physical contact except the client desires.

WebmastersRe: This New Nairaland Is Weird (my Views) by yawatide(f): 6:14pm On Mar 20, 2012
As a well-respected techie, you should be able to express your desires concisely and accurately in a form that can be acted upon. All the jarasis you added only distracted the reader from the actual issue you're having, which is the lack of the 'mark as read' feature. It has nothing to do with 'mobile'.
1) Nowhere in any of my posts had I mentioned that my current frustrations with NL has to do with mobile

2) Yes, my main bone of contention is lack of "mark as read". Another is the way posts are listed is making me nauseous, and I say that literally and not insultingly. By the time I get to the 5th or so post, everything comes at me like one long post, and so I stop. Humans read (proven by research) a web page in an "F" pattern. The way the board is now, you have no choice but to read from top to bottom. The book that comes to mind here is, "Don't make me think" by Daniel Krug.

3) My comments may be "jarasis" but as the customer, you have to at least listen without sounding condescending. . .not that I care. I am only looking out for the other folks who may be too intimidated or shy to speak up.

I am not asking or telling you to change anything. It's your website and it's popular to boot. All I am saying is, try and be more receptive to your customers. No one knows tomorrow.
WebmastersRe: This New Nairaland Is Weird (my Views) by yawatide(f): 4:32pm On Mar 20, 2012
Hmm, just because 99% of ppl may come in on mobile doesn't mean you don't cater to the 1% who don't. Ideally, they should redirect mobile users to a mobile version. Regardless, I am not feeling the new format, especially a lack of "mark as read". I don't have time to scroll through every single "new" post. It's killing me. In fact, I am only visiting NL today because this thread caught my fancy.
WebmastersRe: This New Nairaland Is Weird (my Views) by yawatide(f): 10:37am On Mar 20, 2012
I used to visit NL at least once an hour. Since the release of the new NL, I have found it very confusing: hard to read, no "mark as read", hard to follow who is saying what, how many posts, etc. As a result, I visit NL maybe 3ce a day. In fact, this is only my 2nd post since NL was changed.

I know that people are for the most part not used to change and that I am only one person but if I am visiting 3ce a day at the most and have given the new NL 2 weeks and still find it difficult, this might also apply to others. Bottomline: Less page views = less google ad revenues.

Something to think about. . .

For something easy to remember: .com
For something to promote your patriotism, regardless of whatever anyone says: .com.ng

Personally, based on stories I have heard in the past, with respect to registration, etc, I wouldn't go for .com.ng. Even if the process has improved, I have to give it a while for the new process to mature. Especially for a high stakes site, I can't afford to take risks. Just a personal IMHO

WebmastersRe: How Much Should I Sell My NSE API Script? by yawatide(f): 9:00pm On Mar 13, 2012
As much as the market will permit. . .

I see 2 flavors of this:
1) Standalone: You sell it for a one-time fee. Here, the code is only as good as the day they bought it. They would then have to return to get the latest. More expensive than #2 below.

2) "Freemium": You offer certain pieces for free but for extras, you charge extra. Those who buy this option would also be promised regular updates

For residual income purposes, I would purposely stick to #2. How much? Maybe something like 300 - 500K for #1 and 5 - 10K per month for #2
WebmastersRe: Multiple Joomla Site by yawatide(f): 4:56pm On Mar 13, 2012
If I understand you, then here is what you need to do (note that I haven't tried this myself - IMHO, it is a risky venture, security-wise - but have read that this is what you need to do)

1) Run the installation script again, using the same database username and password, etc

2) when it comes to the screen where you specify database tables, there should be a section for database table prefixes. By default, Joomla tables have a prefix of "jos_". You will need to provide a different prefix for this. This will create the tables for the news site, in the same database with the "jos_", without overwriting the "jos_" tables. Of course, having a back up of the "jos_" tables is in order.

My security concern, revsitied:
What if someone gains access to your database? sure, you may have backups, but why go through the stress in the first place? Having 2 sites running off of the same database is IMHO, akin to having a TV that has a combined DVD and/or VCR player - it sure is convenient but if say, the DVD player goes bad, you are out of both the DVD and a TV - not good.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: What Do I Do by yawatide(f): 10:02pm On Mar 12, 2012
1) I strongly advise that you have 2 separate sites - 1 serving mobile and the other serving desktops
2) If #1 above isn't an option, then you need to write your code with fluid layouts in mind.
3) If #2 above isn't an option, you mind posting a screenshot of the "distorted view" so we here can figure it out? Chances are that some width is causing the distortion but I won't conclude until I at least see a screenshot

p.s.: Sorry my late response - the latest nairaland doesn't allow (yet) for "mark as read". As a result, I have way to many new threads and it is easy to skip over (what I consider to be) relevant threads as you go down the list.

Doncigalo, good one but let me add to you addition if I may tongue

I once worked for a popular auto website in the US. It was all about clicks. Why? Clicks drove traffic which drove ad revenue. In other words, revenue trumped usability. . .and they always got millions of hits daily. I don't know if that is the thinking here sha.

May I suggest a possible compromise? To tease the customer, have a modal with a summary and a "more" link or button to the detailed page.

WebmastersRe: Something For Shilling: Checki.com.ng by yawatide(op): 8:45pm On Mar 11, 2012
Sure. From a bird's eye view:

1) http://www./dealer - the form on this page isn't validating properly. Also, look to offer front end validation as well, not just back end. This will also help reduce the load on your servers, especially if the site gets heavy traffic. NOte that this may also apply to other forms on the site

2) On the vehicles details page, only show photos if they exist. In other words, there is no need for "no image" to show.

3) "view mobile site" at top left should do just that - take me to the mobile site. No need for a modal to explain to me what I think is pretty much standard these days. As for the SMS, again, no need sending it to me. If I click the link, I expect to be taken to the site.

4) I see flags at top left but I couldn't tell what they were for. At first, I thought they were for translations but when I noticed the countries the flags belonged to, I clicked, only to be taken to the country's specific site. Maybe the call to action should be more explicit.
