dhtml,

u r not alone. I have read the OP at least thrice but still don't get it. I guess some things are better communicated verbally. Then again, it is about 715am local time in my locale.
WebmastersRe: Designing A Mobile Site by yawatide(f): 12:18pm On Jan 21, 2012
1) You can make use of a stylesheet with the "media" attribute set to "handheld"
2) You can take advantage Responsive web design (google it)
3) You can take advantage of CSS media queries

Regardless of which of the above you choose, the concept remains the same:
You have the same code with the same css styles, only that if your main site had a DIV with ID of "main" is 900px for the main site, it might be 200px for the mobile site. If you are observant, you can see how this can get real messy in a second as there are tons of mobile devices of various screen resolutions.

A better, albeit tricky approach is to code using percentages and ems (for font) as opposed to px. I say "tricky" because percentages work well for widths of HTML but not images.

In the future, consider using a framework (I prefer jQuery mobile) which does all the dirty work for you.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: If You Do The Same Job Twice For The Same Client, Do You Reduce Price? by yawatide(f): 5:24pm On Jan 20, 2012
No "real wa" at all. I have been in similar situations before. You are doing the same thing (as in, you may be building the same car). Then you add "slight modifications". As a courtesy, I might charge the same but, if the "slight modifications" get as e b, you charge "slightly". The good thing is that since you have already worked with this client, then they have gained your trust so the telling them the price shouldn't be as painful.

No b 2012 talk. Na capitalism talk cool
WebmastersRe: How Much Will You Design Nairaland (without Using Smf And With Modifications) by yawatide(f): 4:22pm On Jan 20, 2012
I f you charge 500k for a 25k job, one day wind go blow, fowl nyash go open.
Another programmer could just look at their site and scream at the price you did it with.

This is bad business for you end of your relationship with that customer and their refferals!

What do you think happens to badly built cars! When it doesnt last people start telling other people not to buy.
Again, it is a matter of capitalism, what you are willing to pay as a customer and what you are willing to charge as a developer. I have nothing against anyone who wants to charge low prices for something so I see no reason why anyone should find something wrong with me wanting to charge high prices. I personally budget for 1 site a month. I would rather charge high for that 1 site and relax 2 weeks of the month than do 100 low-priced sites and never have time for myself.

I will sign off with 2 true stories:

1) During the last election cycle in Nigeria, I was contacted by a politician to do his website. I was competing with 5 other people I was told. Not being in Nigeria, I gave what I thought was a reasonable price for a campaign website. A few days later, I got a call from my buddy who was an insider who told me to increase my price. Why? Because though they liked my work, some were questioning if I actually knew what I was doing, considering the next lowest bid was 800K. Hint: I was not even at half of that price. In the end I didn't get it due to internal wrangling but it did get me thinking. . .Maybe I am charging too low.

2) I was contacted by another guy in the US last year to give a proposal for a site redesign. Again, I gave him what I felt was a reasonable price after which the man yelled, "kai! dem don do me o!". I asked why he said that. He told me he paid $3K for the current site (http://www.globalucf.org/). Did I tell him, "wow! that price was a really dubious one. You were ripped off", or words to that effect? Nope. That is none of my business. I charge what I charge and that's as far as I will stick my nose. Though again, we didn't go any further, it did get me thinking. . .Maybe I am charging too low.

So there you have it - stories from both ends of the spectrum.

Front end FW:
jQuery - low learning curve (IMHO), easy to follow and understand and hey, if google is now using it officially, that pretty much sums it up

Back end FW:
If by this you are including CMS, then I will go with Joomla again, low learning curve, though I recently started my WordPress Odyssey and must confess that my fondness for it is almost beginning to compete with Joomla smiley
WebmastersRe: How Much Will You Design Nairaland (without Using Smf And With Modifications) by yawatide(f): 11:46pm On Jan 19, 2012
To your point:
I said what I said because according to post #7, it is "dubious" to charge certain amount of money just because it is, in the poster's opinion, on the high side.  Now, why would such a high price be "dubious" and not say, "expensive"?  For your reference (since you are into quoting articles, which I will get into below  tongue): http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dubious - or was the word just casually thrown out there, without knowing the meaning?

Regarding Bill Clinton:
I knew you would scour the net just to try and veer the conversation off course grin - so I said $20m.  My bad. I meant to say $10m.  Regardless, as you have pointed out, he has made at least $75m.  This is even more reason not to go begging for mugus to help pay off your wife's debt (in fact, I will go to the very same site you went to, to pull the article wink http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/12/14/bill-clinton-offers-big-apple-prize-to-pay-hillarys-campaign-debt/)

By the way, you are yet to answer my question as to why you chose Mitt Romney (a Republican) and not a democrat  8

dhtml:
Na so o! For US, it seems the quickest way to score millions is to either make speeches, sell a book, star in a (stolen) sex tape or star in your very own reality show. Sadly, the last 2 are slowly but surely making their way to Nigeria sad
WebmastersRe: How Much Will You Design Nairaland (without Using Smf And With Modifications) by yawatide(f): 10:51pm On Jan 19, 2012
Anyone with a conscience will feel bad for selling a bucket for the price of a Ferrari; it has nothing to do with class warfare.
You are speaking in generalities here.  Don't count me in this "anyone" group.  I don't feel bad for any price quoted.  Take that back: I feel bad when I realize that I may have quoted lower than what I should have.  Again, it is all about capitalism.  Besides, just because I charge you 500K doesn't mean that is what you will pay.  There is a negotiation process.  Abi, do you think that when the FG raised fuel price to 141 that it actually was going to sell for 141 eventually? Nope.  They knew that if they said 90, NLC would beat it down to 80.  So they said 141 and probably settled for what they actually wanted to raise it to  cool

Initially I thought Mitt Romney hijacked your account and posted that.
Nope.  Actually it was hijacked by Bill Clinton who makes hundreds of thousands in speech money and last year made about $20m, while at the same time going cap-in-hand asking supporters to help pay his wife's $1m (?) debt from the 2008 democratic nomination process (geez!  Why are the republicans always the bad ones?  huh)

nna, no send dem. If yo u fit collect 500K to install smf, by all means do it. There is nothing dubious about it. You have no reason to feel bad. If the client can afford it, good. If not, you negotiate. As I have said here and elsewhere, Nike and Bata, all na shoe but Nike better pass Bata by far.

Interestingly, as I have said earlier as well, if na shoe, una go buy am, no mind at all. But since na "common" web design, all of a sudden, I am supposed to feel bad? Tufia! This class/money warfare/envy needs to stop!!!
WebmastersRe: How Much Will You Design Nairaland (without Using Smf And With Modifications) by yawatide(f): 8:31pm On Jan 19, 2012
It's dubious to collect that much money to install a free software. Even if you will be modifying it, that amount is preposterous.
It's "dubious"? Says who?  it's called capitalism.  Okay, letz look at it this way, and this is based on personal experience:

I wanted a pair of shoes to wear for a wedding.  Something to wear once and that was it, since I had forgotten mine at home.  I saw a nice boutique, found a shoe.  It was going for 50K. Knowing that you pay wat is on the price tag, I no say word.  I look shoe, im look me.  Na so I cross road enter open air market.  find reasonable shoe for 8K. Price am to 5k.  Buy am comot.

now, would you say the boutique was dubios charging me 50K?  Nope.  It is capitalism at its best/marketing to a certain clientele.  If people don't buy it, he will most likely drop the price until people can afford it.  Most importantly, that 50K price also has the customer service of the employees, air conditioned environment, etc built in, all of which the guy also has to pay for and thus is factored into the price of the 50K shoe.

In talking with a lot of web designers and clients alike, it seems (and I speak generally) both ends of the spectrum fail to make the same connection to building a website as they would to say, a pair of shoes.  It is the same difference.  I mean, I have to keep reading to remain relevant and upgrade my skill set, I went to school to do what I am doing and I had to pay school fees, if you are in Nigeria, you have to pay for fuel and most importantly, I have to charge enough money such that I have money to set aside for my savings, after paying my bills.

If DHTML's client is watching this thread, trust me, building SMF from scratch, especially if he hasn't built one before, no b beans o!  Not to mention, DHTML is one of the best out there, as far as NL is concerned.  That 300K I quoted, that to me would be on the low side.  500K might be more like it, after actually talking to you and getting more specific details.
WebmastersRe: How To Upload An Image Into Mysql Database by yawatide(f): 7:38pm On Jan 19, 2012
Nope,

dhtml has answered him already. Besides, OP says it is very easy to store username and password. Storing the path to the image should equally be as easy, right? tongue huh

teemy:

Mo o ni yawa o, he he. Again, you miss the point.

what IS NOT my point? Whether or not BLOB is good or bad. IMHO, it is not good.

What IS the point? Whether it is possible to store raw images in a database. Fact: It is possible. Having said that, refer to my comments in "what IS NOT my point?"

Thanks

WebmastersRe: How To Access Wikipedia Despite The Blackout by yawatide(f): 11:32am On Jan 19, 2012
he he, all this trouble just to see an article that you can wait to see 24 hours later? or are you trying to say there aren't millions of other sites to get the same info from? cool

To me, this was a time for a competitor to clean their clock. There was tons of stuff I needed to research yesterday but I prioritized and if I really needed it, I googled for another site.
WebmastersRe: How To Upload An Image Into Mysql Database by yawatide(f): 11:30am On Jan 19, 2012
teemy:

Weelll, you could upload to a database table by declaring the column as a BLOB but it wouldn't be the best thing to do wink

So, OP, as teemy as said, save the path to the image in your DB and save the image in that path. You will be saving a ton of storage space when you do that cool

WebmastersRe: 500 Internal Server Error >>>>>> Pls Explain by yawatide(f): 10:16pm On Jan 18, 2012
"500 errors" are server errors. Something has happened on your web host's side (or on your server if you are hosting stuff yourself.

If the issue hasn't been resolved by now, give it some more then contact your web host if it still isn't solved.

google "server errors 500" or words to that effect to learn more. I would recommend wiki but it will be down for another 5.75 hours at least smiley

I have used opencart for years and have no complaints about it (opencart.com). What's more? If you have used joomla, the admin interface is just like joomla's, and the learning curve is quite low.

Then why did I click on it, I hear you ask? Simple: I wanted to see who would fall for the post cool

As far as I am concerned, you have just given NL's google ads (unneeded) 2 page views. . .not that there's anything wrong with that wink
WebmastersRe: Quotation For A Business Website by yawatide(f): 12:54pm On Jan 16, 2012
I personally couldn't possibly give you a quote for this - incomplete details:

1) What is the name of the organization? If this is for some odd reason private info, what area of business are they in?
2) What do they mean by "very good website"? In other words, what features are they looking at?
3) When do they want it?

These are some of the questions I have at the top of my head. Why do I ask? Because without these answers, I will either charge too much (in fear of what they mean by "very good website"wink or charge too little (thus cheating myself in the process)

I mean, you have pretty much answered your question, based on how you've asked it. How do you make urls like that? Simple! Make them like that.
WebmastersRe: Pls Help Me by yawatide(f): 10:45pm On Jan 13, 2012
I couldn't access the site, as spelled below. Be that as it may, you might want to take a look at jquery photo galleries and jquery slideshows. These have a lower learning curve and don't involve downloading software programs that say, flash would require.

Good luck!

This is beyond the scope of this board. Besides, many threads have been devoted to this. It is indeed both and art and a science.

Suggestions:
- Do a nairaland search for relevant topics
- Visit google webmaster's site and do your homework there

good luck!

Take it from me, a certified lazy coder - you are better off, learning this stuff yourself. The good things about this approach are that:
1) You get to learn what you are doing and actually know it
2) Over time, if you are doing the same thing, you will have a template from which to copy and paste for future projects.

It seems the time you have spent asking this particular question about DW and PHP and the time you have spent telling people that they haven't exactly answered your question would have been time well spent in actually learning the stuff (tutorials abound online).

Think about this for a sec, and then come back here and thank me later (others have) cool
