naijaweb:
I have made known to you my distaste for the addictive twitter. Don't even go there tongue

By Lightbox, I mean the javascript library plug in that say, you have an image thumbnail and you click it to get the full image. The screen goes dark and an enlarged version of the image fades in. Consequently, clicking out of the image, or hitting ESC, the screen returns to normal and the enlarged image fades away. I know you have seen this before, or even used it sef cool

By the way, most javascript libraries (I personally prefer jQuery) can handle similar stuff, for the most part.

WebmastersRe: Comment On Dreamweaver by yawatide(f): 5:13pm On Jan 07, 2010
You will need a working knowledge of AJAX, PHP and MySQL at the very least.  Using jQuery, I would go for a "in place editor" plug in. While you're at it, you might want to dump dreamweaver. This would call for hand coding to work at its best.

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: Dilemma Of Web Designers by yawatide(f): 3:14pm On Jan 07, 2010
Drawing the line begins with you and I. Not all clients/employers do a lot of reading with respect to web trends so it is up to us educate them whenever possible.

As for web developers in Nigeria doing everything from photoshop to mysql, I think it is because of the high unemployment situation. In other words, they know that if you complain, there are probably 1,000+ people out there willing to do not only what you do but 100 other things and for even less pay. We just have to deal with it.

Per your regrets (or whatever you want to call it) about freelance vs employment, my opinion is that everything happens for a reason. Take it in stride. Every curse is a blessing in disguise. You just may not know the reason immediately. If I were you though, I would take advantage of your present situation by picking up as much as possible from the people you are working with and improving upon your present skill set for when you either quit and go somewhere else or go back out on your own.

good luck!
WebmastersRe: Script Designer Needed Urgently. by yawatide(f): 3:08pm On Jan 07, 2010
I'm Kosi, I've worked on many login php scripts I downloaded online yet without any success despite I have little knowledge of PHP.
Therein (bolded words) lies the problem. In other words, assuming the code has logic that as part of the process deletes every single file of your site, or worse still, downloads a virus on your computer that wipes out every single file, you wouldn't even know.

Chances are that you have the PHP but are unaware of the fact that you need a database to make things happen.

I would say whoever helps you should ignore what you have and do everything from scratch.

Good luck!

My experience has been that if you go by web host/developer sites, you probably wouldn't patronize half of them, and that includes foreign-based ones. This is why I prefer doing my things via referrals.
WebmastersRe: Review by yawatide(f): 3:01pm On Jan 07, 2010
GBAM!

I would also like to add that sites you develop aren't for your clients but for your client's clients. Besides, how would you feel if you bought a car, only to find out that you weren't getting what you paid for? After all, "let's face it these are efforts that are not appreciated by clients by going to far,most of em don't care about optimization just slam,bam and they just want a website", abi? wink
WebmastersRe: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by yawatide(f): 2:58pm On Jan 07, 2010
Very proactive quad. I likes that! grin

Quick question/concern: Since this URL has been mentioned on previous pages, is it possible to put up a quick "sign me up" module where people can enter their email addresses for updates when the site does go live and to update people on the conference, ala lightbox (or whatever)? My concern is, some might read this thread from page 1, see that most of the links aren't active and say to themselves, "these guys no serious". You know how that goes.

If need be, I can provide a cool jquery newsletter plugin that I have been using for some time that doesn't require any database interaction.

Let me know what you (and others) think.

d don, he he, one of my favorite past times is to either google things at random, or as I am driving around, copy down URLs of companies inscribed on billboards or vehicles for future viewing (for the purpose of seeing if there is anything I can "borrow" from them or to contact them later in hopes that they will hire me to redesign their sites) tongue

I saw your code and posted an answer based on that but your guess is as good as mine as to why it isn't showing up.

Thanks and sorry for any inconveniences.
WebmastersRe: Why Float Instead Of Using Coordinates (top And Left) by yawatide(f): 11:24pm On Jan 06, 2010
1) ALWAYS indent your code. It makes it easier to read
2) Your code was canned by the spam bot but I have sent an email to seun to unspam it
3) Your problem is that for 2, you didn't set a width and you didn't float left either. When you don't specify a width, the browser will default to a 100% width, which is why 2 is featuring below 1. You also needed a clear as well as a container around both DIVs.

Try this (edited):

<style>
body {margin:0px; padding:0px; }
.withborder {border: 3px solid grey; }
.clear { clear: both; }
</style>
<body>

<div id="container">
<!-part 1-->
<div class="withborder" style="border: 3px solid red;float:left; padding:3px; width:200px; height:auto;

margin-left:200px;">

<p class="withborder">God is verposition:relative; position:relative; <p/>
<p class="withborder">lanre As is usual with positioned below a floating element, use clear.</p>
</div> <!--end of part1-->

<!--beginning of part 2-->
<div class="withborder" style="float:left; width: 300px;">
people text andth CSS (and impossible in traditional HTML), you can apply the
clear property to any element, not just text and images. So, if you run into a
situa
</div> <!--end of part two-->
<br class="clear" />
</div>
</body>
</html>
Note: my values are completely arbitrary for the widths. If you modify and would also like to set a width for the container, you need for account for that in your math.

good luck!
WebmastersRe: Why Float Instead Of Using Coordinates (top And Left) by yawatide(f): 10:45pm On Jan 06, 2010
You are right, per your understanding. to explain my code above:

Imagine you have 1 carton open on either side. The carton is "container". Now imagine you have a pack of whot cards. You take one and place it at the bottom of the carton. That is "footer". You take another 2 and place them on either side, on top of the "footer". Those are your 2 floated DIVs. You then place a card on top of the 2. That is your navigation. You take yet another and place it on top of your "navigation". That is your "header".

Make sense?
WebmastersRe: Why Float Instead Of Using Coordinates (top And Left) by yawatide(f): 9:37pm On Jan 06, 2010
glad to know you are understanding so far.

This is how I like to code my pages:
Overall container -> header->navigation->left column (floated) -> right column (floated) -> footer

code:
<div id="container" style="width: 498px; border: 1px solid green;">
    <div id="header" style="width: 498px; border: 1px solid red;">header</div>
    <div id="navigation" style="width: 498px; border: 1px solid purple;">navigation</div>
    <div id="content-container" style="width: 498px; border: 1px solid yellow;">
        <div id="A" style="float: left; width: 248px; border: 1px solid orange;"">blah<div>
        <div id="B" style="float: left; width: 248px; border: 1px solid orange;"">blah blah<div>
        <br style="clear: both;" />
    </div>
    <div id="footer"style="width: 498px; border: 1px solid blue;">footer</div>
</div>
Of course there are 1001 ways to skin a cat.  In conclusion, I only use containers to:
1) wrap around the entire layout
2) wrap around floated DIVs (I rarely use positioning as it can get tricky, especially if users decide expand their windows for example

No matter your layout, you can modify the above to suit your needs.

Make sense?
WebmastersRe: Why Float Instead Of Using Coordinates (top And Left) by yawatide(f): 7:43pm On Jan 06, 2010
floating and positioning, either way can be done. however, IMHO, floating is easier. The main "difficulty" in floating is that you will need to "clear" the float when you are done otherwise the floated DIVs (for example) will "bleed" through the elements below it. Another difficulty is if you have margins or paddings around the DIVs. You will need to compensate for these, courtesy of the box model otherwise, your floated DIVs will appear one below the other.

Good floating example (please note that I am using inline stylesheet for illustration purposes and it isn't advised in actual code. Just plug-and-play my example):
<div id="container">
<div id="A" style="float: left;">blah<div>
<div id="B" style="float: left;">blah blah<div>
<br style="clear: both;" />
</div>
Now, back to the box model:
If container is 500px and A and B are each 250px but B for example has a left margin (for spacing reasons) of 10px, B will show below A. Why? Because now the total width of A and B is now 250px + 250px + 10px = 510px. To fix it, you will need to either subtract 10px from A or 10px from B to restore equilibrium so that both DIVs can appear side-by-side.

Make sense?
WebmastersRe: Mysql Palava by yawatide(f): 7:36pm On Jan 06, 2010
1) the form is created "with", not "tru" a post request
2) the form goes to the file (php, not mysql) that you specify in your form's "action" attribute
3) on the page in #2, you can then access your database and do whatever it is you need to do.

Make sense?

refer to post #9. I would strongly consider looking at note pad, assuming you can't find another text editor. Time is money. The clock is ticking.
WebmastersRe: Review by yawatide(f): 4:05pm On Jan 06, 2010
I am on a T1 connection, I have waited 5 minutes and all I see is the background and what appears to be image slices (I can't really tell as they don't have any alt or title attributes).

I clicked "stop", cleared my cache just in case and did a hard refresh (Ctrl+R in FF). Still same results. Sorry but I can't wait any more as my time is money. On that note, I close tab showing the site and will NEVER return.

Sorry.
WebmastersRe: Dreamweaver Does Not Open On My Laptop by yawatide(f): 4:01pm On Jan 06, 2010
Yep, in the time it would have taken you to install, uninstall, post on nairaland, wait for a response, follow instructions from nairaland only for it to fail again, then post again, I bet you, you would have hand coded at least 2 sites in that time.

Let us all remember that it is more important to make our businesses work for us, not the other way around. Time is precious. This issue should definitely be a topic covered at the web conference.

Has it taken care of the issues cited here? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-271455.0.html

If yes, kudos!

I am learning Code igniter right now, after which I am off to kohana so I can't check it out right now as I don't want to break the flow. That notwithstanding, when I am done, I will definitely check it out and weigh it against the other 2 before making a decision with respect to what framework to use in my work moving forward.

Once again, if you have taken care of the issues cited above, among any others, kudos!
WebmastersRe: Step By Step Guide On How To Create Your Website by yawatide(f): 11:39am On Jan 05, 2010
folks,

You can't blame the guy for trying. This is like saying, "God go punish you, coke. There is pepsi, why would I buy coke". Hopefully you get the point here. Some write books and sell for 100s, others post their info on blogs for free. It's a free world. Perhaps the guy has something in his book that is unique to the others, you don't know.

Let us at least encourage him as he could as well have joined the yahoo boyz club or become a kidnapper, both of which would definitely pay more wink
WebmastersRe: Dreamweaver Does Not Open On My Laptop by yawatide(f): 11:33am On Jan 05, 2010
Can you, technically, develop any website of any scope on frontpage? Yes

Does it give you the control you really need as a developer? No

Does it, technically, cut down on development time, as it helps you by setting up things that would have taken up time? Yes

Does it "hide" things from you and "keep certain things a secret", things that you as a developer should otherwise know like the back of your hand? Yes

So, it depends. I could go on and on but like Dual, as at the time of this writing, I am not yet firing on all 4 cylinders. Bottomline, my opinion is that you should steer clear of such WYSIWYGs until you have the foundation down pat. Once you do that, if you like use the software that responds to your voice. Why? Because if you have problems, you want to be able to know what it is as opposed to spamming boards due to a lack of basic knowledge cool

Perhaps this too should be a topic for the web conference. By last count, so that no one says I am not contributing my part, I have contributed at least 3 topics tongue

As I may have told you, I will be doing a lot of traveling this year and so don't want to commit to something and then disappoint. Having said that, I am here to support.

By the way, while waiting for website, to secure venue, etc, what are the topics for presentation/discussion?
