Yawa, where u dey
Recovering from the shock of you using certain bad words (the "s" word for one). Please refrain to avoid a situation where some or all of your posts suddenly "disappear" ![]() |
Back end and posible (sic) client side validationPossible? Dude, a true professional does it all, not when they feel like it. You eliminate: bad data, possible sql attacks, etc. |
Update: It appears the bot has "eaten" the thread that I started on this topic. As I have said, over and over again, this bot is deleting genuine posts. Oh well, tis nairaland's loss, not mine. You can also rest assured that I will probably NEVER be an original poster AGAIN ![]() |
Per the request of fellow forumite, I am starting this thread. It is meant to be a living document so everyone is encouraged to contribute. Also, what I say isn't golden. If I make a mistake, someone please keep me honest. Here it goes: Search Engine Marketing (SEM), in lay-man's tems is what you do on your site, in order to promote it, to ensure that it ranks highly in search engines (google, yahoo, etc). The goal is here to reach certain metrics (converting visitors to buyers, getting people to spend more time on your site, etc). It comprises PPC (Pay Per click, the ads you see at the top and to the right side on google for example. More on this is another post) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) which is what you do, that doesn't cost you a thing, on your actual site to ensure high rankings (content on your site, layout of your site, load time of your pages, etc) This is pretty much it for a first post. make sense? I would rather a majority say it does before moving forward. Again, others are free to chime in. |
IMHO, human contact and interaction is still golden and as such, at least for the first meeting, I say it be done in person. After we get our feet wet and are used to how we do things, we could then consider online meetings. My opinion |
help on? |
From various postings on here, I don't show my work publicly. If you want to see it, you will have to "lie in wait" and catch me online. On purpose, I am very elusive - the less you know, the more you desire to know ![]() |

Never the less, using   is not wrong, that was why it was invented as a character or tag, but i see no reason one should use 300 so using one or two to quickly add spaces is not wrong even sites like facebook and yahoo have two  's2 wrongs don't make a right. TABLE tags were also invented for a reason but guess what? Over time, they were abused. Google was recently sued if I am not mistaken. So was facebook. Does that mean that lawsuits are good? I mean, based on your quote above, they are. Let us stop this "it is good for me because it is good for facebook/google" and be original please |
1) Visit http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/01/14/jonathan-can-perform-yaraduas-duties-court/ for instance 2) Click on the VP's photo. Note the magnifying lens 3) Hold down your mouse and note what happens (hint: photo moves around) Question? Does this make sense to anyone? Does this enhance the sole purpose of anyone visiting a news site, which IMHO is to get news? What is the point in providing a feature which isn't obvious (I only noticed it as my mouse mistakenly moved over the image)? Your thoughts as always |
so let stick to the fact that a   is ok as long as it follow the way i tagged it, and complex or more styistic poo's be left for the css, cause the use of this wil prompt and error if validated ona xhtml validator and far from it,   is not a depricated tag!!!1) Your "fact" is wrong. Non-breaking spaces do not render consistently across browsers. If you are that concerned with such spaces, you can use a span or CSS3 techniques (I forget the rules but basically, you can have CSS in v3.0, kinda like javascript or php or whatever look for a delimiter between words and style words preceding it) 2)   is not a tag, sorry. |
allsolutio: I get this message atop my browser when I visit your site. Maybe you should take a look at it, granted as you said, you are still developing the site: Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home/johnkaym/public_html/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file. |
@Yawa, use of   and divs is different, just like dual said ![]() i don't think anyone will useAre you sure about that? Have you seen some of the sites up for review here lately? The debate is one a example like<p>Hello      i HONESTLY LOVE YOU!!!</p>Actually, no it is not. Dual's approach is best ![]() |
What I am about to say is about as plain as English as you will hear: Dump design view and adopt code view ![]() Even plainer english: If you are like me and used to hang around grown ups who played ping pong, when you were a kid, after they granted you the "right" to knock with them a few times, you probably got the following statement, "ol girl/boy, comot here make you no spoil ma hand". Given this example, you are the Dreamweaver and the way you play is what will "spoil your hand". Get it? ![]() |
He heeeee (my laff, as "I go die" said in one of his skits, don dey reach london o), the more I read posts like yours Dual, the more I am seriously thinking of setting up an outfit t rival aptech and niit (evil grin) |
Yeah Kolitos, that is why I treat my existing customers well and prefer referrals only - before contacting you, potential clients already know who you are, how much you charge and your work ethic. In other words, less stress ![]() |
Because the authors, contrary to popular belief, aren't gods or demi-gods but human. Other possible reasons: 1) Could be the functions are referenced but somewhere shortly thereafter, you are told that you aren't to worry that the code will be provided later on. 2) many books come with a website. Maybe the code on that site has been updated, albeit after the book went to print. Either way, sometimes I take such errors as a chance to play around with the code to see what it can do (for example, I am learning Code Igniter right now and I purposely deviated from the book by plugging in data from a database that I already have running (as opposed to running the scripts in the book). I ran into issues along the way but in the end, I got it to work, it has been all good ever since. Here is what I do before downloading/buying any book: I visit amazon.com to check out what it's about. I check the table of contents then I check just 1 highest-ranking comment and ALL low rankings. Why ALL of the latter? because, IMHO, those comments could be the reason why the book isn't for me. Typos and bad code are nothing new as far as coding books are concerned and many comments reflect that. I mean, chances are I am new to the language which means I have a steep learning curve coming in. Why muck the waters up even more by spending time wondering why code isn't working and it isn't my fault? Once I am convinced that it is a book I will like, I then proceed to download/buy. Ever since I came up with this process, I have NEVER been disappointed. NEVER! |
and why isn't there one? do you by chance use FF's CSE html validator plugin? If not, you should. Also, set your xhtml doc type to transitional at the least. |
I called a client I landed 2 weeks ago this morning to provide him feedback on the goings-on of this site. After we were done, he says, "I just want to say I am very impressed with your services. You never let me ask you a question. You keep me abreast a tall times" Sometime last year, another client said pretty much the above but in addition, said, "What impresses me the most is that you are a Nigerian (client is Nigerian). Not many of us are the way you are". The above comments are what I want to hear ALWAYS. Tell me why they wouldn't refer you to someone else or trust you with a million dollars with their eyes closed and go to bed knowing that what they wanted you to do will be done? |
It could be that it's because I haven't eaten yet but I believe I see 2 functions that are being called but which don't exist: Apply() and Play() |
jQuery makes you lazy man. Just like using GPS instead of memorizing directions. But who am I kidding? I use jQuery too ![]() |
Yeah, when I first used dreamweaver i hated (and still do. I know i can turn it off but what's the point? ) it when I enter say, P opening tag, then when I would go to type the close P tag, I would actually be doing it twice as dreamweaver would automatically sense and close it for me when I typed a slash. One thing I do like about dreamweaver (just about the only thing ) is I can highlight an entire block and hit tab and everything is automatically tabbed. In some other programs, you would be erasing everything you highlighted. |
adeg, You know, when I first noticed that they had 2 domains pointing to the same codebase, I thought the same as you. But then, I got to thinking: maybe one is parked and merely a server redirect to the other. If this were the case, then it makes sense to me. Many other corporations do this. For example, try www.gogle.com and see where it (hopefully ) takes you. I even did same for a client last year.Possible reasons: 1) Users may mistype a url 2) For an SEO campaign, some companies may try different URLs and then track to see which one brings the most traffic 3) Sometimes a site may have had a url for ages but because it isn't one we might remember easily, rather than discontinue the old one, they set up a new, much shorter one and point traffic to the new one. |
You can still use dreamweaver, provided you use code view, as opposed to design view ![]() |
look who's talking. which one is worse, infinity's or the one where you had the words written upside down? ![]() |
P.S: a bed of nails could be fun with the right babeYou are one weird/sick freak ![]() |
1) Search/read similar posts and follow their guidelines 2) define, "I got this by various trials and errors since i join the forum". In other words, be more specific Thanks, |
google it |
In the end the client doesn't care whether you used divs or tables as long she loves the site and pays well! do what you do.Very bad attitude to have. That's like saying, "some people get to work on a bike while other walk. The boss doesn't care as long as they both get there, that's all that matters." They forget that the person who walks will be sweaty, smelly, tired and have a poor work attitude. It's also like saying, "some people serve a tennis ball at 10kph while others serve at 50kph. It doesn't matter as in the end, the ball still crosses the net. " They forget that the person who serves at a higher speed stands a better chance of hitting an ace. This isn't a matter of opinion but a matter of FACT. People have been paid and some have made a lot of money doing the research to come up with reasons why we as (supposedly) professionals should do things a certain way. There are issues like page weight, browser consistency, usability (have you ever listened in on a screenreader before?), etc to deal with. Oh well, as I said earlier, some prefer to lie on a bed of nails while others prefer to lie on a bed of roses. In the end, if we go to sleep at night, we all wake up in the morning right? ![]() |
would it be right to say that from now on, anyone needing an ebook should google with rapidshare as the prefix? ![]() |
Donpozu, infinity: They may be hear to stay but it doesn't mean they are here to be abused. Some prefer to sleep on a bed of nails while others prefer to sleep on a bed of roses but all na bed right? Using the above, especially if not done for good reason could lead to page bloat, pages not rendering consistently across all browsers/devices etc. For non-breaking spaces, why not use paddings and margins in CSS? If not displaying tabular data, why not use DIVs or FIELDSETs? Again, Some prefer to sleep on a bed of nails while others prefer to sleep on a bed of roses. The choice is yours. |
