Donmeca: Thanks Yemmy...I have done all that and found just one whose decision i am eagerly expecting di May. Given d high number of applicants published for only 10 spaces, I want to broaden my scope...2 mayb increase my chances. Unfortunately, there is no bilateral agreement btw them n Nigeria on educational exchange and training. Now I can't get d visa with my account still...since my financial situation did not improve within d year. Their demand on financial guarantorship is quit strict! Just tired now....but praying n hoping God will turn d grant in my favour and make me one of d chosen 10. If not.... Can you tell me what they demanded from you financially? |
Career / Re: What SHELL Internship Is All About by yemmyma: 11:01am On May 07, 2012 |
Well, i don't know about SHELL internship but an internship is a training period or employment like training in which university undergraduates or graduates are contracted to work in the company for a fixed period of time. Usually 3months to 1year depending on the scheme involved. Undergraduates usually have max of 5months and grads 1 year. Sometimes these training serves as a platform for companies to recruit talented students into their pool of entry level grads. So i guess the same is what is happening at SHELL. Hope this helps. I know the tuition is low that is why i asked how much it was in your case. Seriously, countries like that especially in Europe don't give scholarship of any sort to students because they believe they have made the tuition fee somewhat negligible for the student. So my advice is to look on the school's website and see if there is any form of scholarship offer. If there is none, then you might want to go for the studies which is almost free and find out to slug it out while there in terms of living cost. All the best! |

Career / Re: I Have M.sc In Mechanical Engineering But Want To Write For ICAN by yemmyma: 4:00pm On May 02, 2012 |
The problem i pointed out is some fellas have not even tried getting a job in their field and want to branch out to an extremely opposite industry just because a guy in Canada is doing well in it. At least, we know many stories of people that did not even attend popular schools abroad and are doing great in that Naija. Not even a professional certificate to their degree 1 Like |
Career / I Have M.sc In Mechanical Engineering But Want To Write For ICAN by yemmyma: 10:39am On May 02, 2012 |
One thing i have seen common on Nairaland is seeing people who really don't know what they want from a career and are mostly motivated by the current money. By current money, I mean looking at what someone other guy is successful at and decide to turn their back on their own profession ignoring all the effort they have invested in it. What you see is many people studying Accounting want to go for a masters degree in petroleum engineering because they read success story of a Petroleum Engineer or Industrial Engineer and how much money they earn and bla bla. Of course, sometimes these things called career change come to some unplanned which completely makes sense. Like the story of this dude in the Logistics thread who studied Engineering and now works in procurement for a bank. But spending 4 years B.Sc and 2 years Masters in Computer Science and Information Security with a professional certificate in Oil and gas is totally a waste of time. At least put in effort to find a job in your own field. The moral of my story, if you love Mechanical engineering so much to the extent of getting a Masters degree and all of a sudden decided to pursue an ICAN professional cert. just because the guy before is doing fine in it, then i think that is the beginning of insanity. To all nairalanders reading this Please we need career diversity in Nigeria. We all won't work as a petroleum engineer and investment banker for this country to move forward. 1 Like |

Of course i won't hate on him. But the truth is modeled to be a bad society. If it was a multi national that paid that much to him for any kind of venture then we have a problem in this country. That is exactly the same problem we are experiencing with D'banj today. Boasting of acquiring multiple jeeps and houses for his team and lots of arrogance to come with. I think these companies can be socially responsible by investing in their customer service to make a good brand. I think its high time the Nigerian consumers started demanding the value of their money from these so called multi nationals who are only interested in entertainment. 2 Likes |

DonJ will say nothing cos ur cheating him is irrelevant now and he's not on good terms with DBanj. 4get that one. you can see from the interview that he is probably a hi fellow of Don Jazzy now and not necessary buddies like they were in the U.K. |

Unfortunately, trust our Nigerian people to start raging at JJC. If you are not sure, he is one of the best producers i have seen in Nigeria. If you want to argue on this, bring Naija producers that can do better than him when it comes to production or making music generally then i am ready to drag this all the way with you. And to the interview, my opinion is that he made the interview too soon because i believe that somethings are still gonna come out of this in the nearest future. But with that said, D'banj is too arrogant a guy that i don't care if JJC made that claim already. Why would i support a D'banj that ignored the whole of Nigeria during fuel subsidy claiming he knew nothing about it? No D'banj is not worth to be spared of the bullets he is getting. 3 Likes |

Career / Re: Does It Mean Dat Studing MATHS As A Course Will Make One End Up As A Lecturer by yemmyma: 4:24pm On Apr 23, 2012 |
Wemmy6284: enlighten me The main problem i encountered with Nigeria is that most of the courses we overlook at our universities could actually make you a hotcake when it comes to been recruited internationally. Personally, i think studies in mathematics is one of the best decision anyone can make. Op. let me illustrate by saying. If you go to Pan African University website, and check their head of strategy department, you will find out that the guy studied Electrical Engineering at undergraduate and today has a Phd in Strategic Management. What does that tell you? Undergraduate courses are generic, they really don't determine where you work most times especially if you don't go straight to work with your B.Sc. Secondly, when it comes to mathematics as a career option, there are many things you can do with it. For instance in my field, even though we are usually looked at as a management discipline, i have found that the best guys in the field are maths and industrial engineering grads who spent most of their undergrads working with statistics etc. Maths is so good a course you can continue as a software engineer(common in schools abroad), operations research analyst, supply chain optimization specialists, industrial engineers etc. And many of those outside certificate companies want to recruit top people for can be aced easily by mathematicians. Talk of six sigma or lean specialist etc. So you see, i can go on and on and on on the possibilities that comes with studying maths at school. Just be good at what you do, then the rest is history. 1 Like |

naijaobi: PLZ DOES IT MEAN THAT WITH THE BLOCKED ACCOUNT, I AM GUARANTEED GERMAN STUDENT VISA?? See, one thing i have liked most about white people is, when they say do 2, just do 2 and they are fine. And regarding your question, they said put money in account, just put it and provide other requirements as directed. You should be fine. Nobody can tell you that you are guaranteed a visa, but reemember, that money is about 85% of your chance of getting that visa. The remaining 15% is the 1+1 = 2 they ask you at the embassy. Remember, these embassies are not like the U.S that expect you to act as if you are looking for a job during interview. I am sure they most probably ask why you want to study at that school and your choice of study. Just go ahead and make the move. |

Career / Re: Graduates Deficiency In Writing Or Expressing Themselves In English Language by yemmyma: 9:13am On Apr 21, 2012 |
The truth is, language can be forgotten. Today, you cannot remember all the idioms you learnt in your secondary school days especially if you don't use them often. And remember that from University level studies in Nigeria, English is no longer thought comprehensively. That said, English is not our first language and a most times we learnt to speak and sometimes write wrong grammar picked up from the streets in Nigeria. You can see cases like that called the Nigerian grammar on NL. I have been living in Europe for sometime now and even though i have had my studies in English during these periods, i can't help my deteriorating level of English. It gets worse by the day because people here have their first language and just speak English to fulfill all righteousness. Only those from the U.K. can be spared. And talking about U.K., i have seen many of their people speaking and writing even worse English, but i can't explain why it is getting so common. I think a perfect English is not easy to come by, but don't miss on the most basic and important rules of the language in order to be safe. |

@Op Of course anything can be possible. But note, not all schools in Germany can u study undergraduate in English. You can study a lot of business course in the University of Applied Sciences in Germany. one of which is Rhine Waal. I have made a search for you and came up with this. There you can see which schools u can study completely in English. manny4life: I am not generally condemning American degree holders, what i am saying is that holding a degree from Yankee should not make you a sacred cow in government. It definitely does not mean you know it all. Nigeria has to look beyond the degree at this time. Let me give you examples. Allison Maduekwe - Whether she has been caught red handed or not, intuition will tell us that she is either not capable of steering that sector or she is corrupt. Dimeji Bankole - U.K degree holder with phonetics fighting in the house and embezzling already for his unborn generation Dr Iweala - Of course, i won't accuse her of corruption, but i bet she can't do anything to save Nigeria. You wanna know why? She just can't. If you saw her interrogation during the pension scheme probe, you will see what i mean by seeing this video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiHL8FpLHlE&feature=relmfu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k68VcawQKY&feature=relmfu |

@Op That is life for you. When i was in Nigeria, i wanted to have a degree and have a white collar job in a good company but i have always fantasied another me in front of TV. By TV i mean, i like to be a presenter, like to dance, model (i have the face... lol) and other things. At a point I knew i could be a better record label executive. I just love entertainment with passion. Even after i graduated from school... (i love my field) but still wanted another degree in something else just because i have interest in it. This made me think i would be doing two masters. We all come across such situations in our life. All these things are just in my imagination. I could not do any of that just because i traveled out of Nigeria. So from my case, where you are also determines what path you are likely to tow. If you have real passion about all these side stuffs, follow them strategically but earn your degree first. It is not a bad thing to have a lab job and do your passion at the same time as long as it doesn't affect your job. Of course, pray first for guidance. God is able. Have a wonderful and fulfilled life. 1 Like |

ik.swiss: Does your school have exchange programme with other EU countries for instance Finland? If there is, why don't you apply for exchange and when you get to Finland you try to tell the department if you can become a permanent student? Is not assured though. But if you have a job in Finland, might not be bad. And where you get jobs sometimes depend on where your school is. |

log1: @who knows tomorrow(T22) and others. Please I want You to compare and contrast thesis based master and a taught master. I have been trying to search for the advantages but to no avail. I heard that those that did thesis based are those wishing to go into academic line and they have slim chance of landing an industrial job compare to a taught master degree. I wish to do taught programme in master degree in petroleum engineering but due to lack of fund I intend going for a thesis based because most time there are funds. Thanks bro. Thesis or research based ---> Career in academia Taught Masters -----> Industry But then, whether they write research on your degree certificate is another thing. If you know you are interested in academic, a research based masters is the way to go. The best bet is to get a taught masters programme with a strong research group. That way, you can easily ask to do some research with the faculty if your aim is to have both industry and academic training. 1 Like |
Career / Re: HND Holders: How Late Is Too Late For A BSc? by yemmyma: 10:56am On Apr 07, 2012 |
I was high flying in Yaba College of Technology with a National Diploma. 3.2 out of 4 with 8 months internship before i dumped the programme to pursue a B.Sc. I have never seen discrimination so high in my life than in Nigeria where we should be same. But unfortunately, we have our B.Sc counterparts in Nigeria who have little or no research going on in their schools but will always tell you the difference between B.Sc and HND as the former is research based and the latter is technical in nature. This idea of discrimination should be scrapped entirely. Let me give you an instance. My aunt holds HND Accounting from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (lower credit). She was always sidelined at work (local government) because of her qualification. But the truth is she is pretty good at what she does. 13years at work, all her B.Sc colleagues have all gotten above her in the organization ladder. You know whats funny? She had a boss who holds Msc also in Accounting. Due to financial issues her boss enrolled both of them (boss's money) for the Association of National Accountant of Nigeria (ANAN) professonal qualification examination. During these periods, enrollment + tutorials + personal reading my aunt was pregnant making it difficult to focus on the exam as such. Two weeks after delivering her baby, she travelled to Port Harcourt from Lagos to write the exam together with her boss. When the result came out, my aunt passed and got qualified with her membership certificate staring at me right now. But her boss could not pass hers. Well the government would not know this anyway. Did you get my drift? Nigeria is what it is and this is sad. That is why, when i see specifically some B.Sc holders (with all due respect to the good ones) trying to bad mouth the HND, i weep. You also know what? The guy with the highest GPA in Unilag this year was from Yabatech. He had Upper credit in his National Diploma but Unilag requested for distinction that year. He continued with HND and got a distinction. If he was poorly taught in Yabatech, would it have affected his studies in Unilag? Common sense. 12 Likes 1 Share |
