The worst place to be in is Nigeria. Right from the day the Gwom Adara Chiefdom was murdered in cold blood,I knew that's the beginning of the end for his Chiefdom. That traditional ruler was the backbone of his people who resolved never to cower to El Rufai's attempt at forcing them under an emirate. He was killed and Christians in Nigeria moved on as though nothing happened. Nigeria is an evil country. Repeatedly, the indigenes of Kajuru LAG have been under attack ever since and Christians have not demonstrated all over Nigeria. Soon they will be swallowed and another target spotted for the fulanis to conquer. Tufia! |

garfield1: Leave am sir.the north is more populous.there are several areas that are sparsely populated down south.remember that the north has 3 times the landsize of the south.so if you disperse the dense population of the south over small landmass into the landmass of the north,it will even out. Look at lagos with the smallest landmass.carry their population to kano with a large landmass and see whether it wont be sparsely distributed.more people in the north and getting married to several women while more people down south are becoming monogamous.no one wants to rush into marriage.there are millions of camerounians and ghanaians down south. Cameroonian and Ghanaians millions in Nigeria? Which cities do you find them? Speak of what you know my friend. The north doesn't have that population like you think the size of the land notwithstanding. If Igbos leave the north today, the population vacuum will be evident but not so down South. I speak out of simple logic and not emotion. |

kjhova: Dear friend, actually, @fk001 is right and you are not quite correct. Careful review of history always helps to mitigate the risk of emotional reviews.
When the British descended on Africa, they already had experience from colonial domination in the Arab world, Eurasia, Polynesia and the Americas. They had formed a system of categorizing the natives they encounter in their continued colonial conquest.
Below are the simple items on the civilization scale which guide British opinion of their newly conquered peoples:
a) religion - a monotheist society is superior to a polytheist one.
b) government - a more centralized govt with multiple provinces is superior to a decentralized tribal system.
c) literacy - a society that has developed writing and schooling system is superior to one with no written language or educational methods.
d) international relations - a society with evidence of contact with the outside world is superior to one with only local existence.
e) military - a society which can project war on its neighbours is superior to one with limited or no capacity for projection.
In all 5 counts, the Hausa emirates with Fulani overlords ticked all boxes while no ethnic society in the south came anywhere near close. The Caliphate has Islam as official religion, run a central government based in Sokoto, has the Ajami writing script along with Arabic, conducted Hajj's to Mecca and Medina annually and have relations with Morocco, Egypt, Arabia and the Othoman world and was running its own petty colonial conquest already in the Niger basin before the British defeated them.
From the above, it is clear that the British deferred to the Hausa's not because they were considered stupid. On the contrary, the British regarded the Northerners as more civilized than the rest of us.
To add, the North was conquered eventually when Sokoto and Gobir fell in war around 1910 which is anywhere between 15 to 50 years after most of the South had been subjugated and fully pacified. We cannot say therefore, that the northerners submitted to the Brits.
If Nigeria will move forward, we must all shed the petty emotional fables we were told by our ignorant grandfolks and find a way to bond together as a people to move us forward.
Nigeria is all we got and may we not end up like Syria someday! The first part of your write up was concise and plain. I have to agree with you on that. However, there was more to that which had to deal with why they came here in the first place- economy. It's on the record that the affairs of the north couldn't be run by how much she produced hence the need for amalgamation with the rich south to augment the deficit. You can't argue that. The dissimilarity notwithstanding as long as the British interest is served. This is the problem to us. Your emits had no option but to agree. They were always conscious of the north only and never about a fictitious country not until after the war. The british never wanted a broken Nigeria as that would end the stealing of the riches in the south. We know this too well. They equally saw a blight in your organization which was one devoid of proper administration -recipe for poverty. Today's Nigeria is exactly what they had in mind in choosing to relate with your emirs in the first place. How could people who worked directly with Southerners when administered Nigeria directly chose another to run her after they departed if something is not amiss? People should think! |

fk001: The North were never weak as of then, they were the only region that have their armies in an organized way.
Followed by the SW
The SE were decentralized fighting themselves, as we have read in chinua Achebe's books.
Do you know that there was little or no slave trade in Northern Nigeria when compared to the massive slave trade that was undergoing across the river Niger? Slavery was even more instituted in the north than South and only ended grudgingly there in the 20th century. As for a standard army, yes the north hand something similar to that but not really a standard. Similar to what the Benin Empire had. No other groups had such forces not even the west like you said. On the eastern side, only the Aros had a similar army and it was because those warriors were hitherto raiding bands that ransacked small communities for slaves to sell. If sokoto controlled a standard army like you would want us to believe, they won't have fallen so easily as they fell. I had to research very well to come to this conclusion. Majority of the east had no standard army and So resorted to guerrilla warfare that frustrated the British. Churches did a lot of pacification to reign in the eastern groups. |

garfield1: You just destroyed the debate sir.no further comments.the only thing that should be debated is whether Nigeria is actually close to its alleged population which i clearly doubt.but clearly the north is more populous.just as both north and south rigs elections, both inflate census figures. He destroyed nothing. Landmass doesn't count that much when population is discussed. Check the countries with the biggest landmass in Africa, they often have a smaller population. Having spent over two decades in the north, I can confidently say that their population is heavily rigged. The South is obviously more populous. It should be glaring to all when out of the three major tribes, two are domiciled in the South. This is why Ahmadu Hello demanded half of the seats in parliament before he will agree to an independent Nigeria. The north have always been more calculative on decisions for their own good while the south prefer to dance to the gallery. For population distribution, hausaland which holds the highest population in northern Nigeria isn't more than 30million, no other ethnic group there comes close to 10 million. Their villages are mostly scanty. This is why they encourage heavy influx of Nigeriens into Nigeria to augment their shortage. You can see even Buhari's parley with Niger republic of recent. There are currently more than 6million Nigeriens in Nigeria. They are well known in the north as 'buzus'. There's also no how Kano can be more populous than Lagos( the melting pot of Nigeria). That was a lie taken too far that they won't repeat again in the next census. The north definitely have a higher birth rate but so do they have a higher infant mortality rate too. Diseases are more prevalent there. Hiv/Aids rate of infection without proper records cannot be efficiently used to gauge to death rate. |

Curlieweed: Your post seems very honest and free from the sort of propaganda this sorts of topics usually attract. However, why do you think the Ndoki (being Ijaws) is far fetched?
I have been hearing this claim about Ndoki being Ijaw for a while now but anytime I talk to offline Ndokis I get conflicting responses. While some outrightly deny it pointing to some far off interaction with Ibanis, others say that they were actually Ijaws. Someone actually told me that a lot of older Ndokis were fluent in Ibani. This may be the case because I have met a lady that I initially thought was from Rivers State only to later find out she was actually Ndoki from Abia. She even had an Ijaw name.
It may also be that ethnic divisions was a lot more fluid in the past than it is at the present time. It could be that these groups we struggle to classify along these hard lines were made up of people with differing origins. It could be that Ndoki in the past simply identified as Ndoki and while speaking Igbo did not give a lot of importance to whether they were Igbo or not because that classification had very little political value as the larger Nigeria we see today didn't exist. You're very correct. No one bothered about ethnicity those days. What matters most was survival and ease of business. This Ndoki connection to Bonny actually tells a lot. The Ndokis were business people who were able to connect so much with the Ibanis hence the acculturation. There's this masquerade found among both groups called Nwaotam. Till date that masquerade is still displayed in Bonny town. It's origin is from Ndoki. This clearly tells that Ndoki people were pure Igbos right from the onset. Opobo and Bonny has a dual identity. It's like that in many other regions of the world. |

Ndokinmanmanu: "AMINADOKIARI" I AM LOOKING FOR MY BROTHER:
Ndoki people trace their migration from the ancient Benin Kingdom. The people from records appear to have set out from Benin at the same time with Ibani ancestors but lost them on the way. The Ndoki came looking for the Ibani and some Ijaws at the river inquired of their mission. The response of the early Ndoki migrants was that they were searching for their brother. This in their original dialect means Aminadokiari oral tradition states that the Europeans found the word difficult to pronounce adulterated it to Ndoki. Till date, they are known as Ndoki people. Alagoa (1972: 178) corroborated this when he wrote thus:
The tradition suggest that they migrated north and east-wards from the Central Delta along with the ancestors of the Ibani to their present location where they were affected by Ibo cultural influences. The early Ndoki migrants in search of their Ibani brother passed enroute of Imo River, an estuary of Bonny River (Rio Real) to their present location, settling first at Obunku. On the other hand Alagoa E. J. (1976.337) stated that: "The Ibani (Bonnny) say their ancestor came from Central Delta through Ibo hinterland. After a period of sojoum in Ndoki territory, they came down the Imo River through Andoni country Coaster State ". These two accounts of the migration of the Ndoki and Ibani suggest that the time was when both sojourned together.
Armoury Talbot (1967:160) affirmed thus: "Indeed, it is now settled and well beyond argument that the people of Bonny came originally from Ndoki ethnic group."
Ndoki is also situated in the tropical rain forest of Nigeria. It must be noted that the southern most part ofNdoki has mixed features of both rain forest and fresh water swamp (Nwabara 1983:10). Located in the tropics, the temperature is very high between 750F and 800F. Two known seasons can be identified, the rainy season which starts from April to October and the dry season which begins from late November and lasts till mid March.
Ndoki land covers about eighty square kilometers. The soil is very fertile with a rich plant and animal life. What is the economic implication of this geographical location? This we shall consider presently.

The politics of Rivers State is so dirty that a lot of make ups have to be used in public. The day oil will become of little influence is the day all those make ups will fade away. I've been to Ukwa East on two occasions and can boldly say that they have no identity problem. The relationship Igbo and Ijaw can be strengthened through groups that have shared history of both sides from time immemorial and this would be found among these sub groups. Ndoki, Bonny/Opobo, Kalabari and Okrika. These groups can help the Igbo and Ijaw find a unity that will see us free ourselves from the grip of the evil contraption. Let's stop having a dogfight while our main enemies feed fat from the resources. A word is enough for the wise. |
