Haha! grin No oh! The guy sef...abeg! I feel bad when people play with this stuff because it hinders those that are prepared and gives a wrong impression about Nigerian students.

risher ris: hi peeps, i have been following this trend for sometimes now both day and night.got my visa delayed on 15th Oct at about 9:50am in the morning by a young guy in window 7,he did not even waste time and he only asked few questions
why did you choose xyz school?
me:told him it is characterized by its commitment to civic responsibility,intellectual development and leadership.
vo:what do you understand by intellectual development?
risher ris: hi peeps,i plan re-applying, what should i do,should i re-schedule at abuja or should choose lagos?
Are you better prepared? Do you have better answers that reflect your personal goals?
I was been frustrated by the VO because she kept on interrupting me anytime I try to give an answer to a question that demands an explanation.
VO: Why UT Dallas?
ME: The University of Texas at Dallas provides research opportunities.. she did not let me complete my answer and she interrupted me
VO: Sir don’t tell me what you have already rehearsed, I want to hear your own reasons
ME: The Electrical Engineering programs at UT Dallas provides a solid…….. she did not let me complete and she interrupted me again
VO: Sir don’t tell me what you have already rehearsed, you are pissing me off, give me your own reasons.
Without God we are nothing. Will you read the bolded out loud to yourself and argue that it doesn't sound rehearsed. The VO may be having a bad day or your rehearsed answer was too obvious that she denied you. For her to ask "what you've been doing with your life for the past seven years?" Its so unprofessional, rude and hurtful.

If you asked questions earlier (as a part of this thread) instead of peeping from the fence anonymously and copying off people's stuff, you may have done better. cool Don't be a free rider, but a team player.

You're welcome and I wish you success at your next appointment! Find a way to explain the bolded. If I were you, I'd apply for a Masters or Intl transfer in Pol. Sci or Intl Relations and change my major to Pre-Pharm when I get here because you don't sound too convincing. Having jumped from Pol Sci -> Music -> Pharmacy looks unserious. Pharmacy requires 100% full time commitment for almost 6years! You need to know and show what you will do with your degree when you return home. Explain your good (plausible) future plans. If you insist to go ahead with pre-pharm, I'd say that my Dad was a grassroot politician that encouraged me to study Pol.Sci, but my true passion is in healthcare and I chose Pharmacy. bla bla bla" ... @Knock-out

"I just got admitted into a community college in Michigan..finished secondary school 2005..finished from Lasu were i studied political science and all i have 2 show for it presently is my statement of results. I have been denied visa last year cos i was going as a performer(a musician) at health care free show." I'd advise you NOT to hurriedly schedule an interview without adequate preparation because you've been denied before. What's wrong with your statement of result? Didn't they issue a diploma? Whilst some people may have gotten visas with Junior Colleges, its always advisable to apply to a 4-yr College. Can your "Favorite Aunty" apply at a 4-yr College Pharmacy program on your behalf? When you get here, you can always transfer to Henry Ford.
Prepare answers for the following; Did you write TOEFL?
Why the change of major from Pol Sci.to Pharmacy? Why did you abandon your music career? How do you convince the VO that you will not continue as a performer and drop the pharmD program?
Is this your Aunt resident in the US going to sponsor your education? Be prepared to answer what she does (career/business wise). SUCCESS!!

How can you say that you understand my 'plight'? I don't get it. You asked for constructive criticism and I think I did it fairly. If your bank statement is BaDa$s, why didn't you shoot for Ivy League? Aiight ... I'm OFF!

You're right. Its what the VO understands during the interview. I'd be dammed to find out that financial buoyancy guarantees a visa. Wish you success.

"Yes they admitted me without writing a standardized tests and they said writing a standardized test won't be necessary and they waived it for me." OMG! NOT AGAIN. When you use your mustard seed faith, please share your testimony.

@Kpolli

My cuz is going for post-bacc because he has a non-technical degree thats a 3rd class from NIG. The admissions came through the graduate school but they advised him to take 24 hours of undergraduate courses with a gpa above 3.0 then continue into their MBA program for one yr. Though he wrote GRE/TOEFL. I think its better than the PGA he wanted to pursue in the UK.

@Mckenzii

I won't lie that M.A Public Admin + Drake University is an awesome combo. Is what the VO thinks about you that matters. What is it about public universities that discourage you? Are you avoiding standardized tests? FYI: The Univ. of North Texas houses the 1st Pub Admin program that is currently ranked 8th best in the US. And that's a public College that can offer GA. Unv. of North Dakota too ... Stuff like that is what you may pursue. I have friends that majored in MPA Emergency Mgmt there and are doing well. If you're wealthy and can't be bothered, I can understand. Wish you success.

Anyone interested in a MPH Environmental studies, there's an available fellowship for $20,000 in NY, but the tuition is insane.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by Yvete(f): 9:29am On Oct 25, 2012
@ Mckenzii

How did you know about Drake? Do you know anyone that has been there? I looked their review online and it seems like an OK school with very high moral standards like no smoking/drinking, curfews,..etc. Whats your intended major?

Stay clear of Everest, Devry, University of Phoenix, ITT Tech, Kaplan College, Walden, etc. Degrees earned here are substandard or near-worthless. I'd rather attend a Junior college than unpopular highly priced private(for-profit) schools, but hey, that's my preference. All the best with Drake! Keep the faith!
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by Yvete(f):
"I choose it because its a private christian university ... will help me become knowledgeable about my future career and my relationship with God ... XYZ Uni is an amazing (really?? shocked) university for students to excel academically as well as grow spiritually.. I will be getting an outstanding academic education in my major and I will also be giving the spiritual part of my life a chance to grow." It defiles logic that you've decided to leave all the Church affiliated colleges in Nigeria to pursue a US education to further your relationship with God. Focus on the course, department and maybe the benefits of a private university over large public or research-oriented institutions. Why didn't you apply to other public colleges if I may ask? Did they admit you w/o standardized tests?

lol @ Drake University. Mamacita you've got issues. grin I think Drake is aiight, but you never know. Never heard of it till now.

So a 30-something year old man has no hope for a college education? That's wrong on many levels. For those with NIG bachelors that intend to pursue another bachelors, please use the Post-bacc option for 18-24months instead of spending 4 years at College. Most people desire second chances especially if they do not find their 1st degree useful.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by Yvete(f):
@Mark4see

I admire your persistence and relentless pursuit. Hopefully you get it the 4th time. Could you tell what College you applied to? cos you have a history of lusting after wack schools, no offense. Anyways, I bolded some words you might wanna delete from your next interview, and please improve your diction. I hate to hear things like, we are three. Why don't you say, i have two siblings. Just saying so take my input with a grain of salt.

VO: this money is much are you sure your sponsor can afford it
Me: yes she can. I have her statement here. Good
Vo: I don't need that.
Me: (trying to convince her that my sponsor could afford) she also runs my dad's little business where am also managing for the moment.
VO: are you the only child.
Me: no we are three. an elder sister and a younger brother ... my junior brother is studying Medcine at OAU.
VO: gimme some min. Maybe don't talk about your bro next time especially if your bank statement is not too high. She probably met with another VO to discuss your Mum's financial ability to fund your tuition and that of your bro because she gave you a reason for denial "I don't think your sponsor can afford the money."
She then went to meet the next VO who's A̶̲̥̅ guy next to her and they talked for some few seconds and she came back and said sorry I can't issue you the visa, I don't think your sponsor can afford the money. Honey, medical school is not cheap.

I came back home and quickly again I re-booked for an emergency date and three weeks later I went back again at Abuja. What has changed since the last time you went there? Nothing. I suggest you try Lagos this time so you don't meet the same VO, and to avoid a situation like this "When I got there the third time, it was the man that the lady who interviewed me the second time went to talk with that interviewed me". I doubt that a change in location would raise eyebrows and if they ask, you can say that you've got an event in Lagos that weekend so you scheduled your interview to accommodate it.

I believe you will do better this time around. Write GRE/TOEFL.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by Yvete(f): 10:26pm On Oct 24, 2012
@Mark2see To add to what Jintosam said.

There is an available scholarship opportunity for prospective grad students in Policy Economics for students from Africa. Its competitive. Send me your email address and I'll forward the link to you. Deadline is fast approaching. You need to write the GRE and pass in flying colors.

Why do you need an agent? Even worse is that you used an agent for wack schools!

@Yankdreamer

Reading your interview, I thought you had it. Your first 3 answers were on point. I don't feel bad for you because you stated that you're an avid reader of this thread so you're aware that you gave the VO a reason to deny you. TAKE AT LEAST ONE STANDARDIZED TEST.

Anyways, i think this is where you screwed up.
VO - Did you take any test?
Me - No, i was admitted based on my undergrad n professional certs (i should've shown him something - first flop)See?

VO - What does he do? (Your bro)
Me - Realtor (i should have brought out the letter n statement but i didn't, waiting for him to ask but he didn't---2nd flop i think) You need to be proactive. Don't wait to be asked instead, sell yourself as a marketer will do. You might want to tweak the realtor part and hype your bros business a lil bit....I think

Go ahead and reschedule another date maybe in December. Study intensively for 2 weeks, day & night and take the GRE(i know its expensive but just do it ... My GRE scores were abysmal, but I tried, at least). You'll get the visa this time, don't worry. I'm always on this thread cos' my two cousins are coming for Ms. Info. Tech and the other Intl business (Intl transfer student with a NIG bachelors) for Spring '13. They haven't even received their I-20 yet. I'm excited!!!
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by Yvete(f): 3:29am On Oct 20, 2012
@ Emmanuelkim

I may not have all the answers to your question, but going for a Post-bacc (Second degree bachelor's) is acceptable provided you give good reasons why you deserve another chance.

VO: Why are you going for another bachelor instead of a master? (Purpose: To test your honesty)
Good Answer: I have a bachelors degree from xyz university, and initially intended to apply for a masters program, but because of my non-technical academic background, I was advised by the program advisor to transfer my credit to a post-bacc degree for one year which will continue into the masters program.

VO: Why do you want to change career?
Good answer: Do some soul searching to find the answers. Didn't you write a statement of purpose? You can explain that you were opportune to intern with a company in that field and found it very lucrative, or that you developed passion from the course from a job opportunity.

"This question is failing most of us that have gone before to interview before
what if the VO said 'why do u want to change career?
When Did you finish high school?
What have you been doing?" ......... Really? I don't think anyone knows these better than you do.

IMO, you can also state that you run a private business as well. Strengthen your home ties with accurate information. As for the cold, either you rub heavy Vaseline all over your body or wear a jacket grin
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part3 by Yvete(f):
@poopppyLiillyy:

Just like Walex57 said, you need to be more convincing when you communicate with the VO. Its OK if they don't ask typical questions like, why US? Why XYZ University..... You have to state your case in the best way possible. Think of the question broadly, and link important info to them.

Most importantly, remember that you're considered a potential migrant so you need to establish strong ties with Nigeria (From the excerpts of your interview, I think you did that just fine). I think you need to practice in front of a mirror. Practice your answers to all the questions from part 1 of this thread using strong points to sell yourself.

I think Oct 22 is too soon. Please chill till mid/late- November to prepare. Even if your school waived standardized tests, you should have written TOEFL/IELTS. The VO wants to see your academic abilities and your preparedness on studies. Even though some people got their visa w/o test scores, opting out could be seen academically as lazy/unprepared *I think.

DON'T DARE IT! PLAGIARISM. Professors use a software that could track every on-line document where you copied from. You can read online materials to get the idea, close it and write it in your own words.
