Politics › Re: The Needless Ekiti Airport Project by Zelex9(m): 3:46pm On Feb 19, 2016 |
FKO81: [b]When Asaba Airport was conceived it was based on the gross commercial activities in Onitsha and Asaba and the airport became busy from the go. Warri and Port Harcourt Airports served the various Oil Companies etc.[b]
I beg to differ, how about Enugu and Imo airports these two airports are the busiest in domestic Airlines after Abuja, PH and Lagos? These two airports handles three Airlines daily: Air peace, Arik, Chanchangi, while Akure and Ibadan handles Just one flight each in a week, my opinion South westerns are not entreprise, low income earners is on high side in the West, same with land transport and halage business only Lagos is lucrative other western routes are not Asaba airport is not busy or flourishing. It is under utilized, a white elephant project. It would have been better to establish an coach express service from Benin airport to the major urban centres within Anioma. The money could have been used to fund more important transport infrastructure projects such as tarring Okpanam road. There are far more efficient ways in providing transport infrastructure that will lead to achieving socio-economic goals. I don't even know how some of these airport schemes pass their appraisal (cost:benefit analysis). I am not denying that your points on Enugu/Imo etc are wrong but i sincerely doubt they are financially viable. |

Does anyone know when the service will be launched? They said this month, but I doubt that. Would appreciate if anyone has updates on how far the project has come along.
Also, Does any one know if the Kaduna terminus (for this high speed service) is shared with the existing Lagos-Kano one, as it could provide an interchange for those in Kano to access Abuja by rail. I'm a transport planner hence the reason for asking such questions if anyone is wondering. |

Railway fencing aids better safety which is a important component for social development (in terms of potential lives saved etc). It is something that should have been implemented a long time ago but it is necessary as we gear towards the launching of the Lagos metro services. |

asha80: first the thread is misleading
Secondly if the thread is true then what you wrote here is laughably insulting to say the least..if you don't know it takes 250m naira to build a standard km of road so a 2.9 bn can only build roughly only 12 km of rd so you saying that the sum total of federal rds in the east is just 12km then God help you. Thank you for the input. This is what I am referring to about logical thinking, we need to be scrutinizing information. If what you say is true, then obviously these figures (if they are official at all) need to be questioned. |

Isn't the South East Geo-political zone the smallest in terms of land mass?
Do we know what projects this budget will fund? What about if this "paltry" sum is enough to cover the infrastructure projects set out for the South East?
Let us ask these type of logical questions before shouting tribalism...does budget allocation really matter as long as infrastructure commitments are met? |

Depends...I'm 23 working and live with my parents in the UK (Yes, even in abroad..talk less of Nigeria). Due to this with the addition of my prudent spending, I can genuinely say that I can afford to buy (mortgage) a 2 bedroom flat in London by the end of the year. I can just about build a family sized bungalow in Nigeria as of today.
It up to the individual to decide how he wants to live his live...only that individual knows what he has in mind (how he wants to plan his life). People have different set of circumstances and I don't think it is fair to label people generally, its not about where you start in life but where you finish! |

In westernized countries, certification is also equally important but not the only criteria (but this applies to Nigeria as well, with interviews/assessment centers added to the recruitment process).
The issue with Nigeria is there simply is not enough jobs for the ridiculous rates of graduates produced year in year out. Ask those who grew up in the 60s/70s about job hunting....you will hear a different story.
It has always been about "what you can offer" rather than certification. The issue lies in the fact that there are too many applicants (more people are attending higher education), which makes it quite costly for companies to host recruitment exercises for all graduates. Even over here in the U.K, over the last 20 years more and more companies are increasing minimum grade requirements from a 2:2 to 2:1 due to the costs of recruitment. |

My point: its no longer impossible 2 graduate frm uni even b4 19 (for those dat schooled abroad), in dis era of private sec sch and uni.
Not lyk im in support of dis age discrimination tin though....dnt get me wrong Indeed, wheat you say may be correct but the bottom-line is your situation does not represent the average Nigerian graduate. P.S: I'm interested to not what Uni's abroad that produce graduates below age 19. If so I can assure you this must be in exceptional cases and not a regular occurrence. |

36STATES: She just got her post-graduate diploma this year, while commissioner for finance in Ogun State? She must have paid for it because it takes at least 30 hours study time every week to complete a study of that size, even though UEL is one the most undesirable universities in Uk. So how did she combine it with her duty in Ogun state?
Why can't Yorubas bring someone with the academic quality we expect? I will never allow any of my relative to attend University of East London..........and that's where a minister of finance got her qualification.
Is this another Enoch Opeyemi of Riemann Hypothesis Why not bring someone to show the Igbos you can do it also? I'm currently doing a post-grad diploma in Railways at the University of Newcastle while working as a transport consultant in London. Lectures are held every 2 week, for a period of some months. It is very possible to complete a post-grad diploma over 2 years. it does not require " 30 hours of study time per week". Try and get facts right before defaming someone's name. |

I don't mind sending their address, phone numbers and email to you if you PM me. Thanks! From an initial quick search, what alarms me is that on the website, they have a specific section on recruitment scams. They are however a real company. I am 90% sure this may be a scam though. Their jobs require you to be currently eligible to live and work in the UK before applying. |

Martins301: The sad truth is majority of Nigerian youths have been extremely corrupted to the extent that electing them into top government position is suicide for the country. With the way things are, I dare to say that the youths will do worse if they get elected into government positions. If you doubt me, look at the level of rot in NANS, National Association of Nigerian Students, sample the opinion of "enligtened" youths on Nairaland. You will fear for the future of this country. Forget it. The only solution is revolution, complete and total annihilation of the rotten class of politicians. Spot on! |

AncientJerk: Madam Raayah, you don't seem to get it. some people genuinely don't get your sarcasm but even some who do/did get it like myself still aren't impressed. Your sarcasm ruined the thread for me. I was hoping to enjoy the comments actually praising the act of the gallant soldier and more importantly highlighting the basic humanity in all people; instead, the first comment i saw was a sarcastic retort to a remark that was never actually made. No one said anything about the act being unmanly so why divert our attention from the picture and what it portrays to another unrelated issue?
Choose your battles wisely. This is not a thread for gender activism. Probably would agree with this, although there was indeed nothing wrong with the post (I, personally did not really mind) it did set the tone for the remainder of comments in thread. |

abbey621: My advice to you is to wait, your degree alone won't get you a great offer, it all boils down to experience and your network. If you can get a job in your field here in the U.S, the experience alone will make you very attractive to potential employers in Nigeria. Already you have the edge, your American degree is 10 times as valuable as the same degree from any Nigerian institution, this is the way most employers assess foreign degrees. If you are truly serious about relocating to Nigeria, the best route is to secure a job offer from a U.S based company with project work in Nigeria, this way you would be paid in hard currency and your position very secure. Overall, relocating to Nigeria without enough savings will not only cripple you physically but emotionally, do your research before embarking on this journey! Spot On. Exactly what i'm doing. Studied in the UK and working as a Transport Planner there. My Firm have a railway project ongoing in Nigeria. Should be hopefully heading out to Nigeria this year ending. |
