BusinessRe: What Is Stopping You From Importing? *UPDATE: Need help with Suppliers? by Zelex9(op): 4:14pm On Aug 31, 2017
jefy:
Well, good u wnt to help. However, the step by step procedure on how to go abt this without issues wil go a long way. Eg:
step1: highlight with details till we import our first item. Am following. Good job
Hi,

Below are some useful tips.

1) Understand the product and market you want to serve. This will lead you to gaining a better understanding of the type of service you need, whether Air or Freight. For example, Sea freight takes approx 3-5 weeks from UK to Nigeria (depends on location of port), this may not be ideal for products that are based on the latest trends which can be seasonal.

2) Is your product, prohibited or restricted by Nigeria Customs. This is where a freight forwarder is useful but you can do a little research yourself. Did you know for instance that used Fridge/Freezers or Footwear are prohibited? Some items may also require the need for you to hold a licence to Import.

3) Quantity and size- Once your import starts to weigh above 80kg or so, sea freight begins to be become more price competitive. Anything lower Freight forwarding Air freight service via courier tends to be favorable. For items weighing below 10kg (documents, small packages), a parcel delivery company will be ideal.

4) Ask if your forwarder offers any type of cargo insurance! and whether this is included in their quote.

5) Any quote you receive for shipping, make sure to ask if this is the final cost. Whether this includes custom clearance/packaging of products/delivery to final point. Some forwarding service may leave some of these steps out to make it look as if they are offering a cheap service in their quote (but you will end up paying for such those services). Aside from this make sure to discuss about what to expect with regards to custom duties, so that you don't get an random cost.

I would advise you to get quotes from a few companies to compare before taking any decision and if possible check for online reviews or testimonials!

What is stopping me from importing?

I am considering importing these Personal Anti-Rape & Robbery Alarms but I am doubting if it will sell in Naija.
Are there similar types of Alarms that are already selling in Nigeria? If so, does your product improve on the already existing?

SOFTENGR:
How do I receive my goods in Nigeria? Do I need the service of a clearing agent?
Depends what service you order. In a door to door service, the goods will be cleared and delivered to either your address or the company warehouse. However, for a door to port service for instance, delivery ends at the port so you either clear goods yourself or with the help of a clearing agent.
BusinessWhat Is Stopping You From Importing? *UPDATE: Need help with Suppliers? by Zelex9(op):
I've noticed a lot of people are ready to import but don't know how or where to start. I created this thread to help push people in the right direction. This is aimed that those that would like to import from United Kingdom (UK). I can assist you by:

1) Helping identify the right service for the items you want ship (Air or Sea, Door to Door/Door to Port, courier etc) whilst outlining the advantages and disadvantages.

2) Retrieving quotes from a list of forwarding companies that offer the service you need on your behalf.

3) Being your point of contact for any information you needed in the UK.

**UPDATE: After some conversations, I have noticed another major issue seems to be identifying the right suppliers, hence I will also help in this aspect.

A little about me, I am born and bred in the UK (lived in Nigeria for a short period), not affiliated with any shipping company and just to be clear, will not charge for any of the services provided.

BusinessRe: Package Delivery Problems: USPS And NIPOST by Zelex9(m): 3:14pm On Aug 30, 2017
Depending on the weight of your package, have any of you considered using a freight forwarder via Air Cargo? Where your package will be retrieved and cleared by an agent avoiding custom issues and other delays (you also have a point of contact you can deal with if anything goes wrong). The package can then be collected at their respective office. Just a thought....
AdvertsI Will Assist You In Arranging The Right Shipping Service From The UK by Zelex9(op):
I've noticed a lot of people that are looking for a shipping agent/freight forwarder/deliver services etc from the UK for their respective businesses which led me to create this thread. I can help you by:

1)Helping identify the right service for the items you want ship (Air or Sea, Door to Door/Door to Port, courier etc) whilst outlining the advantage and disadvantages.
2) Get quotes from a list of forwarding companies that offer the service you need
3) Retrieve details on respective shipping companies Nigerian office details so that you can start the process once you're ready.

Whilst shipping internationally can be complicated it can definitely be worthwhile and unfortunately I have seen it as a obstacle to many individuals and businesses. My aim is simple, to encourage more people to get involved with trade.

boss we all are not the same.. What worked for mR A can't work for MR B.. With a 500k jab in Nigerian, i repeat with a 500k jab in Nigerian. A wise man can utilise it judiciously and become a multi-millionaire. The problem is just that so many Nigerians are too naive they believe the so called abroad is there land flowing with milk and honey. VERY WRONG MENTALITY
I agree and also find this so bizarre in 2017 with the amount information available. I was born and bred in Britain, only lived in Nigeria for 13 months during my NYSC, so I am not as familiar with the Nigerian mentality but I believe this fault is largely to due with what those in diaspora is telling them (portraying a false utopia). Ask yourself this how many people do you know abroad have come back home to build a house? or is this "land of paradise" based on some instagram photos?

I'm not discouraging anyone from travelling but people need to sit down and critically evaluate what they want to achieve form this life? is travelling the only way route?
CareerRe: Quitting My Lucrative Job For A Degree In Canada by Zelex9(m): 9:46am On Jul 20, 2017
Stay in Nigeria continue to develop your skills and grow through the ranks (attend both national and international conference, join institutes etc). Apply for a skilled migration visa if you still want to leave the country after some time. Makes no sense leaving Nigeria, with the foundation you have.
CrimeRe: Why I Don’t Like Nigerians By Robert Lindsay, A US Citizen by Zelex9(m): 10:35am On May 17, 2017
There is a lot of truth to the article although quite a brash tonne (although I suspect this is a ploy to bring in traffic). I wasn't born in Nigeria nor did I grow up there. Only lived there for about 13 months, but the knowledge and experience I gained during that period was invaluable. The psyche of the average Nigerian is quite remarkable to someone like me. I never understood the emphasis on "acquiring more wealth", this need to show the world I am better than you or I have "arrived". Such mentalities (which apply to all social classes in the country) lead to acts of greed and desperation hence what read and see today. There are however like in any other society some very honest people however they are definitely in the minority.
EducationRe: Fake Hushpuppi Defrauds Student Of His Tuition Fee On Twitter by Zelex9(m): 4:10pm On May 16, 2017
Is this the cause of greed or desperation? If it was so is easy to convert 30k to 3 mil legitimately (or even dare I say illegitimately) wouldn't the whole world have heard about such a business venture? I just don't understand the reasoning displayed.

I'm interested to know why in particular do Nigerians of Christian faith (and to an extent the rest of the world?) find the act of homosexuality worse than stealing or adultery. Sin is Sin, no?. In fact the latter are clearly stated in the new testament. Some of the comments in this thread are quite shocking.

Wait oo are you guys comparing Naija and Canada or what? There is no basis for comparison.Life is a matter of choice. If u love ur father land soooo much, then stay back and just exist there, if you choose to live ur life for the future of urself and ur kids then Canada will be on ur heart.
Everything boils down to choice.
Abeg, gurus for the house, make una no mind me say i wan deviate a bit o.Please between Aussie and Canada, which should i go to.Me wan make money and have a good life for my children. abeg gurus short answers o.
Australia is quite expensive in terms of cost of living from what I hear but this is compared to Britain (where I grew up, so it is quite difficult for me to give a comparison with Canada). I should be going to Sydney next month on work, so i'll be able to hopefully judge better. Don't know much about Canada but I have a friend (Bangladeshi) from Uni who moved over there a couple of year ago and seems to doing quite well. He came as a skilled migrant, I believe.

If he can relocate to Canada via skilled migration, then he should go for it. Anything otherwise I would not suggest.
BusinessRe: Zenith Bank "Network Is Down" Issue by Zelex9(m): 12:45pm On Jan 31, 2017
You see I understand these things do happen and that does not anger me but what I find appalling was the lack of communication. I had made a payment to my Zenith account via a money transfer agency last Wednesday from the UK and since I've tried contacting Zenith Direct etc. My account officer was at least trying to helpful but until now (received an alert one hour ago), no e-mail or any form of contact to explain the situation to me. What if the transfer I made was vital (a matter of life or death), at least if I had understood the situation I could have made alternative arrangements. Very disappointing indeed.

My father stated the same. He had tried to relocate about back to Nigeria that year but he said things were so bad he decided to stay in the UK for the meanwhile. All in all whether a Recession is worse than another, there are people who are seriously struggling to make ends meet during these periods. Nothing new here, we know Nigeria will survive regardless.

Depends...Does he have confidence he can earn a better salary elsewhere? Does he offer a unique skillset that sets him apart from others which would make indispensable to employers? In previous jobs/job offers, what salary was he offered or earning? but to answer your question specifically,YES! 80k is a good salary in the current economy.

PoliticsRe: Ambode Abolishes Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise by Zelex9(m): 8:58am On Apr 01, 2016
santori:
what's too simplistic? I don't think you understand the value of time. we don't place premium on time that's why the country is where it is today.

serious minded countries don't toy with time, they don't give unnecessary holidays as we do here. that's why people go to work on election days. that's why they are always moving ahead with jet speed why we are still hopping with our back side
You're not answering my major concern of the proposed policy. I never disputed the benefits, my issue is how is the so called "daily sanitation exercises" enforced/monitored. You can not compare Nigeria to other countries (I presume Western nations you are referring to). There is a system in place. Local councils receive council tax from her citizens which is used to keep streets clean (also recycling measures) for example. These type of structures are yet in place in Nigeria. Hence my main reason why I believe this policy is too simplistic but I believe that there is more behind the policy that was not elaborated within the article.
PoliticsRe: Ambode Abolishes Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise by Zelex9(m): 3:39pm On Mar 31, 2016
The problem with this action is that there is no type of enforcement in place that will make sure sanitation exercises are done daily as insinuated by Ambode. Not impressed with the explanation behind the policy (too simplistic), I assume there must be more behind it.
EducationRe: Nigerian University With the Highest Number Of Rich Kids? by Zelex9(m): 2:18pm On Mar 29, 2016
Judging by the comments on this thread thus far, it is now making sense... why one girl some years back during NYSC kept on referring to the university (Igbinedion) at every opportunity when having a discussion. Me (born & bred in the UK) being ignorant surrounding reputation of Nigerian Universities couldn't understand why there was so much emphasis on "In Igbinedion no one did so and so...me and my friends at igbnedion do this etc. How I wish I had known in retrospect..lol
PoliticsRe: Lagos To Phase Out Motorcycles, Danfo –investigation by Zelex9(m): 1:59pm On Mar 21, 2016
freeze001:
This is the problem with our leaders. They will always take the easy way out to solve a problem. How about attacking the issues of robbery for instance, from the root causes? How about improving police operations with more frequent patrols and quick/effective response to any trouble areas? How about traffic cameras to monitor those robberies on the highway so that there are eyes always alert to tackle situations? How about giving the Commissioners of Police ultimatums to ensure drastic reduction of crime or face sack and prosecution? This is where State policing is necessary because otherwise a State Governor cannot exactly order the Commissioner to do what he ought to.

When they ban the okada and buses, what alternatives are there to ensure a seamless transition? How do people get to their homes in those nooks and crannies with bad roads that are not motorable? What plans are there to construct/repair link roads and streets for ease of movement? How will public transportation be improved and what is in place to absorb those that depend on okada and buses for their livelihood? Why do these people always cause more hardship on members of the public?
Fair and valid points ideally, however with regards to greater policing, we have to be realistic at the current situation. There are only 317,000 police officers managing 170 million people plus the fact as you've mentioned, state government lack autonomy over police managing resources.

On public transportation, LAMATA have a transport master plan which includes the development of the maritime and rail mode (aimed at lower-income earners). For example, Ambode confirmed (who knows though as opening has been delayed many times) that the Red metro line will open December this year, and will hopefully carry 300,000 Nigerians daily. The real question is whether they can actualise their plans.

Governance is not an easy position, what ever decision is made will adversely affect a certain demographic of society negatively. Hence the reason why these guys are paid handsomely to solve tough issues and, frankly in my opinion they could do much better.
PoliticsRe: Millitary Please Come And Take Over Before Its Messed Up Completely by Zelex9(m): 3:00pm On Mar 18, 2016
I believe this thread is likely either for attention seeking purposes (because the issues listed have always existed, just that there is more exposure due to the aid of social media etc) or the OP is not well informed (which is not his fault). Military rule is what got Nigeria into this mess in the first place.
PoliticsRe: Senate's Rejection Of The Gender Equality Bill: Nigerians React On Twitter by Zelex9(m): 11:22am On Mar 16, 2016
NigPatriot:
Its sad that many of the ladies that shout and scream for this gender equality of an issue don't fully know what it entails.
i believe so much in Fairness and equality, and would fight to ensure its enforced wherever i am. but as far as we are concerned there is no law in Nigeria today that states women shouldn't vote, women shouldn't drive, women shouldn't strife for political posts, no law says women cant own companies. so now i ask? what really do women want? Your husband shouldn't correct you? Maybe we should start by asking what is equality?
our Nigerian and African women really need to get things right, its in their thinking they are missing it.
you want to be a feminist? become a CEO, then hire men under you that will be calling you "ma" maybe that will feed the ego.

dear women stay humble.
This is where I am a bit puzzled. What exactly does this proposed bill entail? If enforced, what changes will take place that will enable a fairer society? From the little I know, the current constitution does not discriminate against women rights. I believe people are confusing the federal law with inherit cultural beliefs.

In actual fact, they do not want accept a large number of refugees but have little say on the matter due to the EU directive (currently not taking enough refugees according to the EU) hence one of the reasons that has led to the in/out EU referendum coming up in June.
