this is what they mean when they say NIGERIA AFRICA GAINT n December, Ghana joined the ranks of Africa's oil producers - it now expects its economic growth rate to double. The BBC's Rob Walker went to Takoradi, the hub of the new industry, to see how a once-sleepy city is changing. He plans to return regularly, to build a portrait of a society in transformation.
On the western edge of the Ghanaian city of Takoradi, newly built villas with wide verandas are rapidly eating into green forest and farmland. Continue reading the main story Meet the people Screen grab from clickable map of Takoradi
* Residents at the heart of the oil boom
For Takoradi's ambitious new entrepreneurs like Peter Abitty, there is opportunity here.
Mr Abitty is a real estate agent with a bright pink shirt, and an even brighter smile.
He shows me round an eight-bedroom house looking out onto the sea, surrounded by banana trees and coconut palms.
Yours for $5,000 (£3,000) a month - five times its rental value a couple of years ago.
"Tenants that come here can take the coconuts for free! We don't charge anything," Mr Abitty says.
Already there has been lots of interest.
"The reason is very obvious." The estate agent points over the horizon: "It's out there: oil, oil, oil." 'Everyone will gain'
Ghana made its first big oil find off the coast from Takoradi in 2007, and turned on the taps late last year. The discovery may not be on the same scale as the African oil giants, Nigeria and Angola. Continue reading the main story “Start Quote Chief Nana Kofi Abuna
If there is oil and gas in the region, we in the west should benefit more than everybody else”

But it is enough for the government to forecast that the rate of economic growth will more than double from 5% last year to as much as 12% this year.
And unlike those countries, Ghana enjoys a reputation as one of Africa's best governed states.
Takoradi, a dusty, run-down port city, is the hub for the new industry.
But it is not just international oil companies that are booming here.
"In five years time, I see Takoradi becoming one of the modern cities of the world," said Alfred Fafali Adagbedu, owner of Seaweld Engineering, one of the many new local companies set up to service the oil sector.
"I can imagine skyscrapers, six-lane highways and malls."
Mr Adagbedu left a job in Equatorial Guinea and came home to Ghana after oil was discovered.
"The transport industry is going to improve, because workers on the rig are going to need to be transported. Agriculture is going to see a boom because all those people on the rig will need to be fed."

Watch: Rob Walker explores Takoradi
"Even market women are going to see more business, because a lot of workers are going to have very fat pay checks. Everyone in this city is going to gain in business."
It is a boost the city badly needs.
At the once-thriving railway station, washing hangs from a train that has not moved in years.
Squatters have moved into the sleeping car.
Once the trains stopped running, many businesses ground to a halt as well.
The city authorities now want to reverse this decline. They want to demolish part of the city centre and redevelop it with high-rise buildings to provide more space for new businesses attracted by the oil find.
It would mean several hundred existing residents being relocated. Rising prices
"There should be some sacrifice, if we want to move ahead as a metropolis. But I believe with proper education they will understand," said city assembly member John Davies. Map of Ghana coastline
The redevelopment will take at least five years, and will depend on the city finding the necessary investment.
But for many residents, Takoradi has already changed.
New traffic jams clog up the streets at rush hour. Hotels are fully booked.
The price of goods has risen, and rents for many residents - not just those in luxury villas - have spiralled.
In one of the newly built parts of the city, I meet Efua, a teacher.
Efua's landlord told her the rent on h they mean an OIL GAINT |

I for one am not against Foreign Involvement in local economies, Yes, U were right Some developments in Nigeria and other countries around the world comes from multinationals, But Hey ZIMBO, The overwheming bulk of our Naija economy is controlled by Native Nigerians, and we are no 2nd class citizens to any Racial minority in our own country, Yes we have problems , but at least our problems are caused by us, and we are try to get them solved. And who is shifting the goalie to get a point driven through I am simply asking u If u would be happy if the biggest economy on ''Lala'' continent is being controlled by racial minoroties, U are there Bleepoing thrash. Arent u a Black African, for god sakes Anyways, I have nothing on u, every man on his own!! Mind u, Africans like US can smile again, cause Naija is rising!!! {and we own what we have---} and as we are doing so, With GRACE & LEGAL PRIDE!!! , I dont know about Africans like Yourself. poor you economy infrastructure development etc doesnt care who is in control as long it is bringing results like i said should USA economy be halved becoz it was the british who started it ? should the UK economy behalved becoz they got profits from colonazation ? |

scholes0: What kind of ''Yeye' post is this from a Zim man{Or woman}. How can a country like South African be the Giant of Africa, when the bulk of the economy is controlled by {White Africans }?? Is this the role model u prescribe for other African counbtries?? Dont we all know what happened and is still happening in your country concerning this issue, . Believe me , In most of those criteria you listed, Nigeria is on her way, and has been doing pretty well since 1999/2000 , compared to our wasted military years, the economy has been growing at an average of 7% y/y since then. When Nigeria and South Africa both completely sort out their problems, then we can revisit this topic again, As for now, Nigeria is the GIANT OF AFRICA, Because We made the claim to the title first!!!!. typical nigerian to change goal post in order to win like i said to someone jamaican labour built the london underground so the brits shouldnt brag about having one the good underground transport in the world? chinese labour built the american railways so US shouldnt brag about having good railway system angola is developing becoz of the oil revenue so we shouldnt give the credit to development becoz money is coming from oil multinational ? the same with nigeria some of the development is owed to oil (multinationals) so we shouldnt give you the credit becoz of the involvement of the multinational who are whites in this case ? USA shouldnt be given its credit becoz there where british in the 1st place ? the list goes on and on dont be daft ----- where you come to end in thinking thats where i start

teeboyseve: In my opinion none of them deserves that position. they are both silly countries. No country in Africa has shown they are better than the other.
there is poverty every where in Africa and little economy growth. No African country has a balanced Economy in terms of Wealth and Poverty.
Any country that deserves that position need to show atleast 50/50 balance in Wealth and Poverty. But right now poverty in most African countries is between 91% to 96%. LOL and they what to be called Giant of Africa. cool we have different views to the subject |

My point and the point of this thread is that it's not safe for work/office. Imagine someone walking past your office and all they see is text. They can't read it nothing spoil. But if they walk past and see a full-size indecency pic of a guy eating out a girl, things could turn out pretty bad. trying to sound smart !!! if your job allows you to be online they trust you not to waste production time on forums thats your fuken problem that you are caught being on a page looks like that |

teeboyseve: When I was at school we use grades not positions.
I wasn't good at Mathematics but my best friend was very good at Mathematics. I was very good at Biology but my best friend wasn't good at Biology.
SA has a good Economy, but Nigeria doesn't. Nigeria has a good Defence, but SA doesn't.
I was still in the same class with my friend for 6 years. SA is in the same class as Nigeria (3rd World)
I will only believe my friend was better that me if he got a promotion into senior class before me. Nigeria will only believe SA is a better country if SA gets promoted into a 2nd world.
NOTE : All of the above statement was in my opinion. the grade is there AFRICA hence AFRICA GAINT still there was number one when subjects are combined position is grades/class are not awarded per subject but overall subjects then a special awards for the ones who got the highest mark on a subject on that overall grade/class (eg zimbabwe has the highest literacy in africa) dream on nigeria having good defence and south africa not having south africa has its own defence industry they make their own and sell to other countries if you got time read this http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/rsa/industry.htmhttp://www.ivema.co.za/http://articles.cnn.com/2010-09-17/world/south.africa.defense.industry_1_mine-protected-vehicle-hits-defense-industry?_s=PM:WORLD |

Romance › Re: Marriage Ought To Have Had A Expiring Date? by ZIMDRILL(m): 5:49pm On Mar 08, 2011 |
akhis: A friend of mine and I got talking over marriage. He was of the opinion that marriage certificate should also have expiring date from the date of issue. His reason was, most couples no longer love themselves and are compelled to remain cos it does not expire; also, the process of going through devorce is not easy. By this, if a couple feels that they are good, they will renew the marriage and have another certificate that will also have another expiring date; and if the man or the woman knows she wants the marriage to continue, he or she will work hard to ensure the other person renews. I latter ended up agreeing with him that this will really end up bringing the best out of couples, and some people who feel, am married weather the other likes or not, will have to think twice. So house, how do you feel about this, should this really hold and whats the number of years that a normal period should last? actually the expiry date is OPEN marry to day divorce tomorrow |
Politics › Re: South Africa Defies Nigeria On Nigerian Soil by ZIMDRILL(m): 5:47pm On Mar 08, 2011 |
passyjango: The fact is that most of the comments here are based on ignorance. This is a woman who has lived in Nigeria and like most of us ignorantly believing that Nigeria is the giant of Africa. She went for a trip to SA and found out that Nigeria cannot be a giant in the same continent as South Africa. This is just a confession of a woman who have seen both countries hence her assertion is more credible than that of some of us that may not have crossed our states of residence in our life time.
You cannot compare yourself to yourself. This woman went to SA and proclaimed it to be the giant of Africa based on her experience. Rather than abusing her, we should see her more like a secret intelligence agent alerting us of the fact that SA has overtaken us as the giant of Africa. This new intel should rather inspire us to reclaim the giant of Africa position, rather than wasting our energy here on NL.
Contrary to what most of us think patriotism is not about covering-up your country. It is about expressing the truth, to inspire a change mentality. You cannot build a nation if you are delusional of how small or rotten your nation is. Our problem is pride and insincerity. We attack every negative statement about Nigeria yet we do nothing to change the fortunes of our country. After this those of us that collect bribe, give bribe, rig elections, vote for 'coconut heads', etc will go back to our daily routine of destroying our country, while we wait for another negative comment about Nigeria, so that we continue our abuse of each other.
The fact is that SA is in a class of its own. At the rate we are currently going it will take us decades to get to where SA is today. Nigeria is only in the same class as countries like Somalia, Niger, Eritrea, etc just like most international reports show. If you do not like it, go and hug a transformer, or better still begin to work positively daily to change the fortunes of your country. You can start by voting the best candidates in the April Poll and commit yourself to not get involved in all those things that have left Nigeria as a ‘Giant in the Sand’. well said |
