Bbng, it will be better if you have pictures of the vehicle posted. That is the norm on this forum. I think this will help generate some interest. |
Seun, thanks a lot for clearing the air. This is what nairaland should be about - honesty and integrity. I second Godalone that this forum needs a moderator!! Let's hear the opinion of other members please. |
Bbng, I see you are new on this forum. Let me just inform you that we do not just sweep things under the carpet here and like you said, we don't encourage hate either. There are still some outstanding issues to be resolved and I think Siena can assist us here: 1. Is he still moderating? 2. If he is, let him re-post his last entry informing nairalanders about the rules - his services will be very much appreciated by a lot of us 3. How do we maintain credibility as a forum if messages just disappear into thin air in this age of technology and we don't have any explanation? If Siena says he does not know what happened to his (the moderator's) message on a forum that he is moderating then he needs to let everyone know. I am personally not upset with Siena as he is trying to provide much needed service on this forum using his own valued time. I just think we should do things right. |
Siena, I think you need to come clean here. You posted a message that you will be the moderator of this forum from now. I personally think this forum should be moderated. I posted a new message with some suggestions for the moderator. Before I knew it, both Siena's posting and my posting were deleted. The question now is who deleted the messages? I believe Siena (being the moderator at that time) had the administrative access to delete messages. That's why I am of the opinion that he knows something about it - I could be wrong but Siena needs to help the situation by throwing light on how a moderator's posting could be deleted without the moderator's knowledge! Somehow, the plate doesn't seem to sit straight on the table. |
@labiyemmy I find your thread and what you do quite interesting. One advice I have for you is to stop spending your time engaging ignorant people. Trust me, there are a lot of intelligent people on nairaland who don't even post any message - I am sure you will have heard from some of them privately via email. You also have to understand that a lot of Nigerians have never been abroad to even appreciate what a GPS is. For those who are not aware, even here in America, GPS does not map every street and also, sometimes, streets could be destroyed to make way for buildings and major highways so if you are asking for your grandfather's "Agbo ile" in Ile-Ife, it should not be a big deal if GPS cannot locate. The info people need is the address in naija where they can see a demo. If you have a good product, that product will sell itself. Meanwhile, please post where one can see this demo in Abuja (if you have an office there). I wish you all the best. |
Damola1, I agree with you. This is very sad indeed. @cgift asked for advice and suddenly, he is inundated with offers from "vultures" trying to make quick money off him. I wish someone living in Naija will answer his questions objectively. Na wah o! |
I have respect for honest people like Hounslow who refuse to change mileage of their vehicle in order to attract unsuspecting buyers. I am sure you will find a buyer soon - especially because of your integrity. |
Fotodaddy, You hit the nail on the head! That's exactly the deal - read the fine print! |
Fotodaddy, Thank God you are ok. May God continue to protect you. Amen. |
erico2k2: By and large, I think it's still better to stick with year of manufacture. It's basically the most reliable benchmark. You will agree with me that cars that sit on the lot for over a year without being sold are few and far between. Colardey: As for why people try to cheat with year of manufacture, it's all about greed and 'get rich quick' syndrome. You also have to understand that some people don't have scrupples and don't care about human lives at risk when they sell their salvaged, accidented and flooded vehicles. This is why we are trying to sanitise Nairaland. If you see a dealer advertising vehicle without CARFAX or VIN number and saying he/she will send it to you privately later, be very suspicious! A good dealer will at least include one of these info in his/her posting. Having said this, you need to do your due diligence by matching the VIN number with the CARFAX report and also the VIN number on the car itself. Let's hope all nairaland dealers will adhere to this standard. We seem to be making some progress now though. One more thing - you can also try and match mileage with year of car. On the average, a car will travel approximately 15,000 miles in a year - can be a little bit less or a little bit more. If you see a 2002 car with 30,000 miles, be suspicious and make sure you get CARFAX report. That kind of mileage is a Red Flag! |
I am talking about maintaining "nairaland standards" here. At least CARFAX report will be helpful initially. We are trying to weed out quacks from here like those who roll back odometer - this will benefit all of us na. |
Inspired, Please help us keep the standard by posting the VIN number or CARFAX report. I think this will be helpful. |
Fotodaddy, CONGRATS!! I am happy for you my brother! Abeg, make you email me Isi Ewu to wash this moto Finally, all the nay sayers have been proved wrong. Jenju - more vaseline to your elbow. You have done it again! |
Nairalanders, I beg you, please don't reply this bugybugy. You can tell from his gutter language that he doesn't belong in the midst of civilised people. Let him go to his craigslist, ebay etc and buy his car from there and then ask them to ship it to Nigeria before he pays. That is where he belongs. |
Please I think ignorant people like this Yahoo! should be ignored at this point. Do not dignify his postings with any response. What will ebay postings do for us here. You don't have car to sell and you won't let those who need car purchase their cars in peace, wetin!! |
Nairalanders, Make una leave Toks alone o! He has straightened things up now. Toks, don't worry about this baptism of fire. It's another way to say welcome to Nairaland. Just leave those who are still upset alone and get on with business. All the best. |
Igbudu1, you can make your point in a civil way and not get down with this kind of gutter language. I am tired of these guys crying like babies because of their perceived "overpriced" cars. Why don't you go and bring your own to sell? You are just venting your anger on poor Vanessa because she is reachable via nairaland. If you really want to fight, why don't you go to Honda Place, Globe motors, Elizade etc? Some of these dealers (at least those that are honda dealers) sell base honda for 6.5 million naira and nigerians are paying for it. Why don't you go and carry placard there to protest? That is what real men do - they don't hijack other people's posting and villify them. And Sultaan, if you take delight in making others angry, be careful as you don't know what may be waiting for you somewhere in the future. I wish you all the best. In as much as some of us may want to educate nairalanders about car prices, I think we can go about it in a civil manner and not hijack someone else's thread and start bad mouthing. I think this is only fair. If you are so passionate about car prices, you can start your thread to educate members of this forum and post car prices of every car in the universe there - that will be fair game but pouring sand into somebody's garri seems to me like a cheap shot! |
Brauneyes, My personal opinion is that auction works at Nairaland for vehicles of about 2 million or less - then you generate buzz, especially if it's a very, very good deal - I could be wrong though. Having a reserved price does help to kick off the process too. There are people who can afford this car on nairaland but they are not many and I don't know if they will want to buy via bidding. Maybe you should just list the car for lowest price you are willing to sell. |
I am always apprehensive of people who think they can achieve their goals by stepping down on others and tearing them down. I wish him all the best with his marketing strategy. |
babeisme, I think it is unfair for you to try and hijack customers from someone else's thread. As Fotodaddy said, we should have code of conduct o! |
Nairalanders, I think inspired_m has come clean to admit his errors. He should should take this matter offline with EI and settle (which I believe he is willing to do). Next thing is that he should from now on give full disclosure of his cars UPFRONT i.e. VIN and/or CARFAX report. This will help restore his credibility. We cannot pretend that there were no credibility issues being challenged as far as this case is concerned and in the process of proving himself, inspired_m made some mistakes e.g. posting a questionable CARFAX report for the Jeep Liberty which says it's a 4x4. It's been proven that the vehicle he advertized as 4x4 is not. Things like that don't help. I am of the opinion that inspired_m is not a bad person but just got into one bad deal. Personally, I will give him the benefit of doubt and do business with him as long as he makes full disclosure UPFRONT. I think a lot of people have learnt from this issue and I think Nairaland will be better for it. I am also of the opinion that we should now let this issue rest while hoping that inspired_m and EI will find an amicable settlement privately. |
earthrealm, congrats!! I am happy for you! |
Xparm, Fear no more. RT Briscoe is now the authorized dealer of Ford in Nigeria! I am also aware that they have certified mechanics around the country too. This is good news for Ford owners and prospective owners. You may want to contact them or go to their website - www.rtbriscoe.com. The only thing is that I am not sure they sell Ford Escape but please call them to verify. |
Inspired_m, if I were you, I will just apologize to EI, give him some kind of compensation and start posting new advertisement to sell cars but this time around with VIN number and/or CARFAX report to boot. This will restore your integrity, your business will continue to wax stronger and everybody will live happily ever after! |
Siena, I mean "nice try" for your logic that posting VIN number publicly has some kind of security implications for the seller. By the way, posting VIN number publicly in the US is not "just following protocol" it is to maintain the integrity of the business. |
Siena, I have lived in the UK in the past for several years so I am very informed about that market. I am sorry, I do not see any logic in what you are saying. But let us start from the US. - What we are saying on this forum is that at least 70% of cars advertised here are from the US. and over there (in the US.), it is ILLEGAL i.e. it is a CRIMINAL offence to try and sell any vehicle without displaying the VIN number PUBLICLY. That is RULE NO. 1 for car dealers in America! If dealer gives you VIN number and you match it with the CARFAX report (I'm still talking about cars from the US.) won't you the buyer see the VIN number physically on the vehicle before paying for it? How come thieves have not cloned all the VIN numbers on the internet? Abeg, give us some intelligent logic here. Are you saying the Americans are dumb for making public display of VIN numbers mandatory? Nice try but your argument doesn't fly. |
Fotodaddy, Congrats!! Where are the doubters now? Jenju, more vaseline to your elbow! |
Nairalanders, Wonders will never cease!! Now people are comparing VIN number with Credit Card, haba!! Please note that there are a lot of intelligent people reading the postings on this forum. Inspired_m refered to websites like www.1000carsales.com, www.motorlinksng.com, www.caradore.com, www.autotraderng.com etc , maybe he should go and advertise his cars there. A lot of the cars on those websites are junk, please don't get me wrong, there are some good ones there o, but there are a whole lot of junk cars mixed in there as well. As far as I can see, if we want to last long in nairaland, we should not categorize oursleves with www.1000carsales.com, www.motorlinksng.com, www.caradore.com, www.autotraderng.com etc . This should be a forum of high standards where buyers can come without any fear of being duped. What's the point of going to a forum where you will have to pray and fast for 7 days before you buy car so that you don't end up with junk? IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE, POST YOUR VIN NUMBER AND/OR CARFAX REPORT jare! Otherwise, go to those other forum and advertise there. Nairaland shall not be hijacked by quacks by God's grace. |
This is getting interesting. Oya, Siena let's hear from you. |
Sultaan, We need to be cautious about the information we disseminate on this forum as we have a lot of people relying on us for accurate information. To say that dealers buy vehicles at auction and then tow them to the port is not COMPLETELY accurate. Not all of us dealers do that. Nairalanders need to be aware that there are primarily 2 main types of DEALERS' auction at least in the US. - The auction for Titled Cars governed by industry rules and the auction for salvage and accidented vehicles (cars from here are probably the ones you were refering to). Basically, it is not difficult to identify the source of vehicles advertised on Nairaland. When price in Nigeria market is almost the same price as the market in the US. (you can find out US. price via the internet), you know you are looking at salvaged or accidented vehicle. This is because, buyer will have to transport vehicle to US. seaport, ship to nigeria and pay custom duty and include some profit. How then can the vehicle be so cheap? Nigerians are generally carried away by low price forgetting that they will pay 10 times more than what they were trying to save in the first place. On the other hand, cars need not be unnecessarily expensive if they are good quality like we have seen on some vehicles posted on this forum with ridiculous and high price tag. The key is to find that balance. Get a good quality car where seller is not greedy. Spending some time on nairaland and following the postings for about a week or two will give you some insight as to what to look for when trying to buy a vehicle. Just like you said, getting the VIN number and matching it with CARFAX number UPFRONT for cars imported from the US. will be a good place to start. |
earthrealm, thank you for releasing VIN number to the public. This is what we need in this forum. Nairalanders, this is one dealer that we all need to emulate. I pray God will bring a buyer very quickly for you. Amen. |
God Bless all of una!! This is what we need in this forum. Quacks and dishonest car dealers must leave Nairaland and go elsewhere to cheat people. No VIN Number and No CARFAX report means RUN AWAY from that car dealer. Infact, not only that, CARFAX REPORT MUST MATCH VIN NUMBER otherwise, no business! |
Finally, all the nay sayers have been proved wrong.
