Celebrities › Re: VDM Apologises To Security Agencies Over NBA Speech by zoedew: 11:22pm On Sep 05 |
dododawa1: Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has apologised to soldiers, policemen, customs and immigration personnel over his controversial remarks at the Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference.
Otse, in a video shared on Friday, said he had reflected on his speech and realised that he was unfair to security personnel who were genuinely risking their lives to protect Nigerians.
The activist had, while speaking at the conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, described the military, police, immigration and customs personnel as “unknown gunmen” in his discussion on insecurity.
However, in Friday’s video, Otse said his remarks were not intended to accuse all security personnel of involvement in criminal activities.
So This Happened (EP 423): 68-year-old British woman searches for Nigerian husband to divorce him0:00 / 0:00
“I don’t think I was fair to a lot of people, particularly the speech where I said that the military are the unknown gunmen, the police are the unknown gunmen, you know, the immigration, the customs.
I know exactly what I was trying to say because, I mean, I have evidence to back up my claim, but I wasn’t fair to a lot of people in that speech,” he said.
He said he was particularly concerned about soldiers fighting Boko Haram and other threats in the bushes.
That speech was not fair, especially to the soldiers that are in the bushes fighting Boko Haram to protect our lands, to protect our lives, and to protect our families.
“I don’t think it’s fair to say they are also the unknown gunmen, to be very honest, because these people have laid down their lives,” he said.
Otse said his intention was to draw attention to alleged corruption and sabotage by some personnel within the security agencies.
“My speech was not to discourage you.
My speech was entirely to talk about the bad eggs in our security operative, our security forces, is to put attention on the bad eggs, so that the leaders in these security settings will look inward and to see that sometimes information are being leaked and their own people are sabotaging them,” he said.
He, however, admitted that the way he presented his argument made it appear as though he was generalising.
But by passing that speech, like I said, it seems like I was generalising and it’s not fair to the fallen soldiers,” he said.
Otse subsequently apologised to the Chief of Defence Staff and the leadership of the security agencies.
“So I will go further to say to the Chief of Defence Staff, Sir, I really want to apologise for that speech, and I don’t want to discourage your boys.
“Please extend my apologies to your boys, to the ones that are in the bush protecting our lands,” he said.
He also apologised to the police, customs and immigration authorities, as well as the families of fallen security personnel.
“To the families of these heroes that might have also felt offended by this speech, knowing fully well that their brother, their sister, their son, their husband fought and died for this country, I am really, really sorry,” he said.
The activist maintained that there were still “a lot of good people” within the security agencies despite his allegations against some personnel.
Yes, a lot of bad eggs there, like I said, a lot of bad eggs, a lot of them are there.
A lot of corrupt generals, a lot of high-ranking police officers are corrupt, a lot of junior officers are corrupt, a lot of them are there. But there’s still a lot of more good people, a lot of more good people, and I know a lot of them,” he said.
Otse said he feared his comments could discourage a soldier fighting in the bush who came across the video.
“Imagine a soldier fighting in the bush and he watches VDM’s video, and he’s like, ‘Ah, VDM is one of us now, unknown gunman.’ That would discourage him, to be honest,” he said.
The activist, who has previously spoken about alleged misconduct by security personnel, said his relationship with some policemen had also exposed him to the challenges facing the force.
Me and police, we work steady. I give, sometimes I share police information, tell them, ‘Oh, this is what is happening here, please, can you intercept,” he said.
He urged security personnel who were genuinely protecting the country not to be discouraged by his comments.
“And please don’t be discouraged, please, please, don’t be discouraged.
We’re there behind you now, and we’ll always support you. You know, and we are part of this thing, security is for all of us,” he said.
Otse, however, maintained his warning to personnel allegedly involved in sabotage, arms supply and leaking information to terrorists.
“But then again, to the bad eggs, your days are numbered.
“To all of you in the military that are sabotaging and causing deaths to your officers, your days are numbered,” he said.
To all of you in the military that are sabotaging and causing deaths to your officers, your days are numbered,” he said.
The apology comes amid controversy over Otse’s appearance at the NBA conference, where his participation and comments generated criticism.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, had rejected the defence of Otse’s role at the conference and called for experienced speakers to handle specialised discussions at the event.
Otse subsequently responded to critics by defending his invitation to the conference and explaining why he was invited to speak.
He later mocked the backlash by appearing in a lawyer’s wig and gown in a video.
His latest apology also comes after a separate controversy over his claims that some police officers at checkpoints allegedly pass information about wealthy travellers to kidnappers.
The police had challenged him to provide evidence for the allegation, while Otse responded by daring the authorities to charge him to court, saying he would present his evidence.
In Friday’s video, however, Otse stressed that his criticism of alleged misconduct should not be interpreted as hostility towards the security agencies as a whole.
I actually know more than the people I was trying to communicate with, so it was not really communicated properly,” he said.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to support security personnel genuinely fighting to protect the country.
“And to the patriots, to the heroes, to our fallen heroes that have died to protect this country… I am really, really sorry.
Keep on fighting for our beloved country, God bless all of you. We Nigerians are with you,” he said.

Gotocourt: The Liberian ambassador to Nigeria also made things difficult for the hospital. He called and demanded that Mr Sawyer must be released. He threatened that First Consultant would be charged with kidnapping and that the hospital's actions would cause a diplomatic incident.
Dr Ohiaeri had to take the phone from Dr Adadevoh and he told the ambassador that Mr Sawyer could not be released and he said that the risk of releasing an ebola patient onto the streets of Lagos was more serious than any kidnapping charge or diplomatic incident. Bigmanism RIP Sir If that hospital deployed its legal retainer, it had one, things would have been a lot different. |

Forumobserver12: When a patienc comes to the hospital unwell and after prelim examination they find symptoms of malaria, are they not supposed to treat the malaria while further examination or investigation is being carried out?
Are you expecting the hospital to conduct all the whole test at once before admittance of the patient? Do we even have Ebola case in the country prior to this incident?
What would you have done differently professionally? What I would have done differently is provide immediate care to stabilise the patient and IMMEDIATELY move the fellow to A GOVERNMENT TERTIARY HEALTH FACILITY especially considering his travel history and the fact that the break out of Ebola was not altogether unknown to the medical community. That hospital lacked the clout to have dealt with that matter and paid dearly! |

airsaylongcome: Most Nigerian medical facilities (and that’s probably north of 90%) do not practice medicine properly. And that’s driven by poverty in the country. Order a lab and patients will not return. So many clinicians have resorted to “eye gauge” diagnostics. Put the patient on medication to start extracting revenue from them and “pin” them, before you start finding out what exactly is wrong with them. Not ideal, but medical businesses have to survive and that survival tactics works here.
For a high brow medical practice though, I agree with you that First Medical could have done better The regulatory authorities let us down. And we lost Gani Fawehinmi to the mediocre "eye gauge" archaic diagnostics. |

Health › Re: Dr Benjamin Ohiaeri Is Dead. by zoedew: 9:48am On Sep 05 |
naptu2: A renowned obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr Benjamin Nnamdi Ohiaeri is dead. Dr Ohiaeri was the founder and chief medical director of First Consultants Medical Centre, the hospital that was at the centre of the 2014 ebola crisis in Nigeria.
Dr Ohiaeri founded First Consultants Hospital in 1982. It was in a relatively small white building on Obalende Road, a short walking distance from the Obalende Road entrance to State House, Dodan Barracks.
The hospital moved to a much bigger facility on 16-24 St Gregory's College Road, Obalende in 1989 and 1990. It is at the junction of Ikoyi Road and St Gregory's College Road (opposite Obalende Roundabout).
First family births
The then first lady of Nigeria, Mrs Maryam Babangida, gave birth to Halima at First Consultants in 1989.
The then first lady of Lagos, Mrs Munira Marwa, gave birth to Imran at First Consultants in 1998.
Ebola crisis
On July 20th, 2014 a Liberian diplomat, Patrick Sawyer, flew into Lagos on his way to Calabar for an Ecowas conference. He became very ill at the airport and was rushed to First Consultants Medical Centre. He arrived First Consultants around 9 o'clock at night.
Mr Sawyer was asked by the doctors at First Consultants whether he had any contact with anyone that had any symptoms of the Ebola disease and he said no. His travel history showed that he did not come directly from Liberia. He said that he thought that he had malaria and tests were done which confirmed that he had the malaria parasite in his system and so they started treating him for malaria.
However, by the next morning he was presenting unusual symptoms. He was hemorrhaging (there was blood in his urine and blood patches in his eyes) and he had acute diarrhoea and was vomiting.
The chief physician and endocrinologist, Dr Ameyo Adadevoh, suspected that he had ebola, so she made arrangements to have his samples tested. The closest lab that could run the test was at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and she spoke to the person that runs the lab and they arranged to collect the sample.
First Consultant also set up a crisis committee and Dr Adadevoh made her findings known to it.
Dr Adadevoh informed Mr Sawyer about their suspicions that he had ebola. He accepted the news without any problem. However, trouble broke out when she informed him that he had to stay at the hospital until they got the result.
Mr Sawyer insisted that he had to attend the Ecowas conference in Calabar. He became unruly and insisted that he must be allowed to leave.
The Liberian ambassador to Nigeria also made things difficult for the hospital.
Mr Sawyer deliberately infected staff of First Consultant with the disease. He removed his intravenous line and spilled his blood, he smeared his body fluid on the drip and asked a staff to check the drip, etc.
Things changed when the test result showed that Mr Sawyer had the disease.
Dr Adadevoh contacted officials of the Lagos State Government and the government provided assistance to the hospital.
President Jonathan signed an emergency order and security agents from the police and military assisted in ensuring that patients did not escape and that contact tracing could be carried out.
The foreign minister called Dr Ohiaeri and Dr Ohiaeri told him about the threats of the Liberian ambassador. The foreign minister wrote a strong letter of protest to the Liberian Government and the ambassador was recalled.
The crisis had a terrible effect on First Consultants.
A lot of their equipment had to be destroyed. The hospital was shut down for months, but Dr Ohiaeri had to ensure that salaries were still paid. Even after the hospital was reopened, patients were afraid to go there.
Dr Ohiaeri said that equipment could be replaced, but the greatest loss was the staff. He said that he had planned to retire and lecture at the university. He had hoped to make Dr Adadevoh the chief medical director of the hospital (she would have succeeded him), but the disease killed her.
Several staff of the hospital were killed by the disease. They were irreplaceable.
The stigma was so great that the family of one of the staff that died was evicted by their landlord. Dr Ohiaeri had to rent another apartment for them and pay the school fees of the children.
Dr Ohiaeri attended university in the United States and he was close to members of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA). These contacts assisted him in managing the situation.
Nigerian doctors in the US got him direct contact with the US secretary (minister) for health and human services and the Centers for Disease Control. He was able to share experiences with them.
ANPA donated protective equipment to the hospital and the Lagos State Government.
He was able to establish contact with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and WHO experts decontaminated the hospital.
According to Dr Ohiaeri:
After ebola
Dr Ohiaeri and First Consultants received praise and awards for their actions during the Ebola crisis. However, he lamented that he was not invited by the government to share his experience during the crisis in order to learn from what happened and prepare for another such crisis.
Dr Ohiaeri was played by American actor Danny Glover in the movie 93 Days.
Photo 1) Dr Benjamin Nnamdi Ohiaeri
Photo 2) Dr Ohiaeri and some of the doctors at First Consultants
Photo 3) First Consultants Medical Centre
Photo 4) Dr Ohiaeri and Danny Glover who acted as him in the movie 93 Days. Major problem was that First First Consultants did not practice medicine properly. The first thing to do is medical diagnostics which shows with exactitude what is wrong with the patient. That hospital did not do that and it led to Adadevoh's death. That hospital management was not queried by the NMA and the regulatory authorities. |

This should not be allowed to continue.
They can come set up factories, employ Nigerians to work.
Not come here set up shop to start selling things.
We are already suffering from high unemployment About time Nigeria followed in the footsteps of Kenya in banning immigrants from running small shops otherwise we will be overrun by the Chinese who will always have the support of their Home Government in terms of finances to oil the business. |
