The protest by some Nigerian traders in Lagos against Chinese retailers should force us to confront an uncomfortable reality: many Nigerians patronise Chinese-owned shops because they are often cheaper.

Yes, Nigerian traders deserve a fair business environment. But we must also be honest about the other side of this issue.

For over five decades, successive governments have left the Nigerian consumer at the mercy of traders and distributors, some of whom pursue extraordinarily high profit margins simply because weak competition allows them to. In some markets, trader associations even fix prices and prevent their members from selling below an agreed price.

A trader is entitled to make a profit. He is not entitled to organise a cartel that leaves the consumer with no reasonable alternative.

So when a consumer sees the same or similar product substantially cheaper in a Chinese-owned shop, why should anyone be surprised when he goes there?

The answer cannot simply be to protest against the Chinese trader because he offers a cheaper alternative. Neither should foreign businesses be allowed to compete through practices that Nigerian businesses are not permitted to use. There must be one set of rules for everyone.

Government must be bold enough to enforce our competition laws. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act already prohibits price-fixing and provides criminal penalties for certain price-fixing conduct. Government must enforce these laws against cartels and other exploitative practices and, where necessary, introduce targeted measures to protect consumers in essential markets where they are particularly vulnerable. But regulation alone is not the answer.

Government must also make Nigerian businesses genuinely competitive. That means fixing power so a trader does not spend half his profit on diesel, fixing logistics so moving goods from Lagos to Kano does not double the price, and giving manufacturers single-digit loans, tax holidays and industrial power instead of speeches.

Foreign companies should likewise be encouraged to do what many successful economies actively encourage - establish factories here, create jobs here, transfer technology and build local supply chains, instead of simply importing finished products to sell to us.

The country should not protect Nigerian traders from competition. The country should protect Nigerian businesses from unfair competition and Nigerian consumers from exploitation.

Nigeria under a CDA Government shall be a country where Nigerian and foreign businesses are free to compete fairly, where government enforces the rules without fear or favour, where production is rewarded over rent-seeking, and where the Nigerian consumer finally has the freedom to buy quality goods at a fair price.

That is the Nigeria CDA stands for.

1. Did you book an appointment with the INEC boss and you were rejected?

3. If so, can the head of the media directorate inform us when last he had intimacy with his side chick to be writing this press release?
