Lagos Won't Allow Other States Number Plates by Idokojimmy: 5:29am On Oct 04, 2012
Lagos State Government on Wednesday said it would no longer allow the use of vehicles with number plates from other states of the federation for commercial transportation in the state.

It also advised residents with private vehicles to change to the state’s number plates to reflect the fact that they are living in Lagos.
The Director, Vehicle Inspection Office, Mr, Gbolahan Toriola, said the measure was meant to achieve “sanity, standard, safety and security” as stipulated by the road traffic law.
Toriola spoke at the vehicle inspection safety campaign organised by the Ministry of Transportation in conjunction with the Political and Legislative Bureau for commercial drivers in Ikeja.

He said, “There is nothing wrong in bringing commercial buses from other states. But if you must use it in Lagos, you have to change the colour and re-register it with us so that we have your information in our database
“This is a standard procedure. As a matter of fact, it you have lived in a state for about three months, you are no longer a visitor and therefore you must change your number plate to reflect the state. It is done in America and other developed nations.

“Of course, this provision did not affect inter-state vehicles carrying passenger from other state. But we don’t expect them to pick or drop passengers at every bus stop. There are dedicated bus stops and parks for inter-state vehicles. If they violate this and we get them, they will face our law.
“You must put waste basket in your buses; there must be first aid box; you must carry extra tyres. These are what our law stipulates.”
The VIO boss who highlighted the provisions of the traffic law, advised them to cooperate with the government to ensure security in the state.

A director in the ministry, Mr. Bola Matanmi, also advised the drivers not to turn themselves to traffic officials, but instead apply to the ministry so that they would be given a Special Marshall status
He added that the union would be given the privilege to choose the colour of the uniform for drivers and conductors.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Political and Legislative Affairs, Mr. Muslim Folami, said the traffic law, which has 43 sections and four schedules was for the interest of Lagosians. He urged the drivers to submit to the law for sanity and safety.

Lagos and Law!

There's nothing bad in trying to bring sanity and orderliness into Lagos but then, Laws shouldn't be too much. One can only wonder how much laws this agbero conductors and drivers would remember.

More and more awareness must be created. Due information must be passed accross at all times because ehn, "how many people VIO/Police/lastma/ soldiers go kill"

This is a good move by lagos, if you have to use any vehicle for commercial purpose in lagos, they must be registered with lagos and inter state vehicle on commercial purpose will go to their park only, he is not mandatory this on private vehicle

There's nothing wrong with these new measures. I wish there's a way to 'domesticate' these danfo drivers and conductors. They are just too freaking wild.

This is how it's done in my native state of California.

•A nonresident owner may operate a vehicle (other than a commercial vehicle) in California until he/she accepts gainful employment in this state or establishes residency in this state, whichever occurs first, if the vehicle is registered and displays valid license plates issued to that owner by the foreign jurisdiction where he/she was a resident

•A nonresident owner of a vehicle may operate, or permit operation of, a vehicle in California without obtaining California registration if the vehicle is registered in the owner’s place of residence and displays valid license plates issued by that state.

•If the nonresident registration does not indicate an expiration date, it will be considered to expire one year from the date of first use of the vehicle in California.
◦Fees are due immediately if the owner accepts gainful employment in, or establishes residency in California.
◦The fees must be paid within 20 days.

When the person gets a job or a place of residence like normal Californians, then they need to re-register their vehicles. It is only after that that there is a time period of 20 days to get the vehicle registered. What on earth is "about 3 months"?

Besides, aren't there bigger issues plaguing Lagos? Did they not see Rick Ross's video?

More like best and wise priority. If you call Lagos state home, you must register your car in lagos for a lot of reasons starting with transportation and infrastructural planning, tax collection, law enforcement and uniformity. It's for your own good. This is how it's done in every sane country.

Besides, why freeload on other Lagosians? The money Lagosians pay to register their cars in Lagos state fund road and transportation projects so pay your own fair share or move to another state if you are so desperate for awoof and freeloading...

It's unfortunate that some non-lagosians especially, view Fashola as the best candidate to rule this nation, come 2015. The truth remains that he's a mean, brutal dictator in actual sense.

I think we need to see the full contents of the law. If they're copying the US, then these drivers need to provide proof of permanent residence or gainful employment. It's a good idea, but I do have questions pertaining its timing as well as its requirements. A lot of drivers, especially okada men, don't have permanent places of residence. If you go according to the California law, if one doesn't have a residence, then gainful employment is required. Is being a driver considered gainful employment?

Anyway we hv to give it to governor Fashola, but the question is, what if a commercial bus driver, having used his bus in a neighbouring state like Ogun State and perhaps have spent lots of money in registring his bus, only to discover that it is more profitable running the Lagos axis, does these not amount to some kind of double registration and abuse of the system?
