There are actually rites that are performed to welcome certain people into the Umunna if they were not born into it. For instance, if you are a returnee or a contentious parenthood just got resolved; or a dowry just got accepted by the family, you will be welcomed into the Umunna. The Igbo also have something akin to the nationalisation for settlers who have lived in a community and contributed to its development over years.
