From another thread:- www.nairaland.com/1221592/controversy-over-ownership-apc Threat to APC: PDP, ACN, CPC in war of words On March 11, 2013 · In Headlines 2:09 am .. By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor LAGOS — The parties in the fledgling All Progressive Congress, APC, were last night engaged in a war of words with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over alleged plans by the ruling party to sabotage their merger. The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, were furious over what they claimed to be plans by the PDP to sponsor the registration of a new party to be known as the African Peoples Congress, APC. The new political association with the same acronym with the mega opposition party, it was alleged, is being sponsored to deny the mega opposition party registration before the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The PDP in a reaction denied the claim, saying it would not be held liable for the negligence and incompetence of the merger parties it described as “our grossly inferior opponents.” The plan by the opposition political parties to merge into APC ran into trouble on account of the proposal for the registration of another party to be known as the African Peoples Congress. The sponsors of the new party could not be identified last night. Registration remains open —INEC INEC officials contacted on the matter, yesterday, said registration remained open to either of the two parties which first met its conditions for registration. Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, confirmed that the commission received a proposal for the registration of the African Peoples Congress, APC, last week but would not confirm the identity of the sponsors. Asked of the implications, Idowu said the fate of the two proposals would depend on the provisions of the law. He said: “What the law requires is that if a group applies and the law has already provided for things to be met, like a checklist, it is not a matter of INEC cherry picking or preferences. There is a checklist and once a group meets that checklist, any group that meets that checklist is registered with that name.” Asked if two parties could bear the same acronym, Idowu said: “That is what I said, I doubt it, I doubt it, but the point I am making is that it is an application and whoever meets the conditions first gets registered.” ACN, CPC finger PDP The ACN and the CPC were, however, not hesitant in identifying the PDP as sponsor of the new party which they claimed was being pushed as a deliberate effort to deny their mega party registration. “If INEC refuses to register the All Progressives Congress, APC, when all the legal requirements have been met, the protest in Tahrir Square in Egypt will be a child’s play compared to what we will do at the Eagle Square,” the ACN’s national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said in a statement, yesterday. “We say this because we are aware that the PDP, which is mortally afraid of the rise and rise of the APC, is behind the phantom African Peoples Congress which has applied to INEC for registration, in an effort to instigate an acronym crisis and give INEC a reason, if it needs any, not to register the All Progressives Congress. “But we will like to warn that if indeed INEC has not merged with the PDP, as one of our leaders, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has brilliantly said, then we do hope that the electoral body, which by the way is not unaware of the All Progressives Congress as the authentic APC, will not succumb to the evil machinations of the apprehensive PDP. “It is a PDP plan in collusion with INEC but we will not take it lightly with them and all their plans will come to nothing. Indeed, we are very much aware of that and it won’t work, it will fail. We are just watching the INEC as an umpire to check them. “We have already given indication and the whole world has heard us that we are APC and if they are trying to bring in another APC it won’t work.” PDP denies allegations But denying any involvement of the PDP in the alleged plans, the party’s national publicity secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, told Vanguard, yesterday: “The PDP is totally unaware of the status of the APC registration. We are unconcerned and completely unperturbed. In the words of our Board of Trustees’ chairman ‘we wish them well’. “PDP cannot be held liable for any negligence and/or incompetence on the part of our grossly inferior opponents.” The legacy parties in the APC announced their plans for merger on February 6, 2013 and forwarded a formal letter to INEC to that effect on March 6. Mohammed was, however, insistent last night that INEC had a constructive knowledge of their proposal since last month when they made their intentions known. Yerima’s arrest, move to clamp down on opposition The ACN, meanwhile, has flayed Saturday’s arrest of Senator Ahmed Yerima, describing the action of the security agencies in Kaduna as a demonstration of the administration’s plans to clamp down on the opposition. The party’s spokesman, Mohammed in a statement said the arrest of Senator Yerima for alleged incitement was indicative of the fact that the administration is jittery. The party said Senator Yerima did not say anything extraordinary by threatening a protest, because protests are an integral part of liberal democracy and cannot be wished away or banned by anyone. The party said it expects more arrests, investigations by anti- corruption agencies and other acts aimed at intimidating its leaders in the weeks and months ahead, but warned the Federal Government to make sure it had enough prison space to accommodate those it plans to arrest. Mohammed said: “After all, it is generally believed that the recent redeployment of Police Commissioners in the states was done in readiness for the pre-2015 clampdown on the opposition. “We know the arrest of Senator Yerima is just a tip of the iceberg, as the PDP-controlled Federal Government gets ready to bare its fangs. But we must warn that fascism can never prevail over liberal democracy.’’ http:// www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/ threat-to-apc-pdp-acn-cpc-in-war- of-words/ |

A lot of crap here. 1. Parties are registered after they have had a chance, APC, that's the official one that has applied to INEC, has not had any chance and must be given one. Reality Check: INEC must give the applicant a reasonable time to meet it requirement, having been officially informed of its intention to use APC. It is only after that period of at least a year, that the name should be open to any other applicant. That's common sense, and it means the Tinubu/ Buhari's APC can not be registered with the name until after a year when African Progressive Congress must have exhausted their chance. Bottom Line: it is no longer feasible for the loud mouthed merger to use APC, else they will see court cases that will nullify any elections they win. ADViCE: Accept defeat, find a new name. Too bad for the sunk cost on media. 3 Likes |

Moreso buhari/tinubu APC can also use alliance progressive congress, alliance progress congress, action progressive congregation, tehehe, lol. Bunch of clowns! |

Paul John: Dude, take a chill pill. This new(silent) APC is yet to contest any political office.. I suppose what INEC wld consider is their level of seriously. Things like having a head office in abuja, and offices in at least 20 states of d federation. Besides, they r yet to make a public statement, and until then u never know their strength. Assuming the party is made up of technocrats interested in politics, peeps like Pat Utomi, Ben Bruce and their contemporaries... Just saying. 1 Like |

Those accusing PDP and INEC of masterminding this new APC must have to go get their heads examined. The new Party have made their intentions known while the Tinubu section is trying to balance their home. For the fact that your wife just gave birth and you decided to name him Adeyinka does not mean your neighbor can't approach National Population Commission for the same name for his son's birth certificate. If Tinubu and his supporters on NL so find it disturbing they should also register a Party with the acronym PDP.Rubbish 1 Like |

This is a disgrace and attack on the collective future of Nigerians This is no time for silly and cynical politics that is simply self defeating Let all those who want power campaign and canvass for votes fairly INEC owes herself and Nigerians to reject the application of this so called African People's Congress because Historically INEC voting cards use abbreviations i.e. PDP for People Democratic Party . . . . Hence African People's Congress simply can not co-exist with All Progressive Congress!!!!! |

Omo_Tier1: How can INEC currently embarking on party deregistration then go on to register a faceless party? Ewww PDP is gone 2015....thier despiration can only be compared to what happened in thier dying days in Edo State. This the exact problem and the same reason the opposition lost in 2011. Sentimentalism!! See, what I would expect apc supporters to do is to castigate thier leaders and let them know that the task of dislodging the PDP is not for unserious minds. That party is a multi billion dollar one sponsored by all the Nigerians listed on the forbes list and all the owners of oil blocks. If you want to dislodge such a party, you come with tact and strategy. You need to think out of the box. Al Qaeda struck America with an unexpected and very simple strategy. David struck Goliath with an unexpected and very simple strategy. If an antelope must kill a lion, it must find a different kind of strategy that would catch the lion in absolute unpreparedness. The only way it could do that is to lead the lion to the ditch and leave it hanging! If the APC must outwit the PDP, it must take it by surprise. No boasting, No noise making! Simply night time strategising!! 1 Like |

It is a common law principle that the first in time prevails. I think INEC should go ahead and register the African People’s Congress if they met the conditions for registration. All Progressive Congress should adopt another name. By the way, I don’t like the acronym (APC). They should choose an ideological name like Labour party. E.g, Conservative, Tea, Green, Independent, Republican, Referendum etc 1 Like |

See people the initial intention of APGA founding fathers was to name it UPGA but INEC denied them cause of the first republic UPGA(NCNC + AG) merger that even failed. So even if African progressive congress has being de registered their acronym is still retired. May be name like United progressive alliance(UPA). They should this their owambe and do the right thing first !4 going public. |
Re: Another APC Application Confirmed By INEC by Nobody: 12:13pm On Mar 12, 2013 |
take dat: The parties involved in the coalition had earlier notified INEC of their intention to go into a merger. There are certain procedures/requirements to be fulfilled by the parties, before approaching INEC for a name change. During the course of fulfilling those requirements, they came up with a name so as to prove their seriousness and convince cynics of their readiness and true intention. Agreed that meeting the requirements requested by INEC would take time, there is nothing wrong if INEC called their attention to the other association requesting the same acronym as chosen by the coalition. The only thing wrong with it was the hush-hush manner the other party rushed to INEC. That was why I asked for the time and when the party approached INEC, and who the major movers of the party are. The desperation involved in packaging the other party, is the reason why some of us are crying foul! The biggest challenge with Nigerian youths is understanding. We are just too quick to lay blames on PDP or GEJ for everything and even for our own wrong doings. From the post, INEC never said they have registered any APC be it the fake or the so called original APC. They are only making it public that they have been approached for registration and so, the so called original can come out with a case if any that they are the rightful APC and of cuz there are still processes and criteria to be fulfilled before it can be duly registered. |

Dignitary: big deal 007:
big deal 007:
You just mentioned it that it is all about politics...politics involves tricks and taking advantage, meaning the smarter people get the prize. Now who's to be blamed if I capitalize on your mistake to get the prize? APC didnt go forward to register or even send a notice of registration to INEC, PDP saw the lacuna and took advantage .... That is politics for you even APC will do the same to PDP if they had such chance. Nobody is going to babysit you in politics, Politics is a very serious business and it is not science or mathematics 1+1 is not 2 |
Re: Another APC Application Confirmed By INEC by mafifle: 12:47pm On Mar 12, 2013 |
take dat: Slow your roll! If the FACELESS APC had long submitted their application to INEC before the merger came to be, why didn't INEC as a neutral umpire immediately informed the coalition party when they came out with the communique of forming APC, that there is an existing application for the same acronym as picked by the merger? INEC cannot claim it wasn't notified by the respective parties in the coalition of their intention to go into a merger, so why wait for weeks before making it known to them? Since 7th of February, INEC just saw the need to call their attention to it on the 10th of March after all the publicity! What a Mockery of institutional incompetence! Why are you contradicting yourself. You call INEC a neutral umpire and at the same time you want to inform the coalition of a request by another intending party . This is a game and the umpire only blows at the point of infringement and not anticipatoryly. Abi your late stooge said any thing is right in a game . |
