redsun: There was functional system that the british met.A system that was functional and harmonious.A system with morals and objectives. With human intellectuals and ingenuites.Unlike the present day nigeria.

The british came with high firepower and coward africans into surrendering, decimate the system and recolonize them. But at the end of the day,the power that wins is that of mental freedom.

There was doubt that they met a system.

That the systems were with morals is debatable.

There were indiscriminate killings of human beings to appease the so-called gods.

There were rampant snatching of other people's property and wives also.

These are not moral systems in any way.

SHUT UP! THE SACRIFICIAL VICTIMS WERE CRIMINALS AND POWS FROM OTHER TRIBES!

there is nothing wrong with that. That was the norm after battle in those days. After a war, the captured would anyways be executed. same with the criminals. In fact, its better for them that they were sacrificed at the altar of the GLORIOUS GODS.

no one use to snatch wives and properties. dont lie. we are not talking about now. The power of the SPirits and the fear of the Gods was great in those days. dishonesty wa meted out with death. angry

One of the most unfortunate things I've noticed in NL is that people that don't know much or anything at all argue with those that do. It is highly sardonic.

The system of administration met by the first Europeans to come to West Africa, the Portuguese was so advernced that they immediately entered a diplomatic agreement whereby one of them remained in Benin and an Edo man sent to Portugal as an Ambassador. The Oba thereafter sent his child(ren) to Portugal to study.
The arrangement of houses and streets was impressive.

They could be Hausas or they could be Yorubas from the Lagos colony. Both were used in the invasion.

None of these men has written any groundbreaking books on ancient African history. How many of them have even gone beyond Nigeria in their research and works? How many of them researched Egypt, Nubia, Kush, Kerma, and the Nile Valley civilizations? African history is not just about Yoruba, Igbo, Bini, starting from the 1800s. This is the period the likes of Kenneth Dike, Michael Crowder and co deal with. Did they research the great African migrations from north to south thousands of years ago following the desertification of the Sahara and foreign invasions culminating in the Arab invasions of the 7th century? Nope. But the people you call ''akata historians'' go the whole hog in African history, to the very beginnings, and do not limit themselves to Nigeria or to the 17th century onwards like your sources. Your sources are EXTREMELY LIMITED in the scope and depth of African history they cover This is why we cannot name a single work by any of them that has any real following.

Cheikh Anta Diop, author of The African Origin of Civilization was a Senegalese historian by the way, and he went ALL THE WAY BACK and defended his findings before his global peers at UNESCO in 1974. His findings based on groundbreaking evidence his peers were unable to dispute, were that the Ancient Egyptians were black Africans and that any history of Africa was incomplete without linking it to the great civilization of EGYPT.

The African scholars were interested in their own histories, not digging up someone elses histories. This is why they have more reliable sources, since they concentrated on certain points which those akatas were incapable of doing, mostly biblically educated nutcases. WTF? Are you referring to the BAntu migrations? THose didnt take place from Egypt, you deluded man! THere is fossil evidence from the KEnyan/Tanzanyan BAsins that predate evolution itself. The foreign invasions by the Arabs is of no significance. It took place only as far as the Northern Sahel and the MAghreb. It had no displacing effect on the current Tribal Populations of Nigeria, except maybe certian groups of Fula.

You need to speak to KingMichael. he is a Nairalander and one of the only sensible akatas here. Cheikh Anta's theory provides evidence that Ancient Egyptians were Africans. There is no doubt.
However they were not BLACK. They just carried similar gene sequence to the rest of the African populace, though they had already evolved into a separate group by the time they settled in the Nile valley. The only dark skinned Egyptians were the later incoming Nubian populace, who are closely related.

Ridiculous. As for the African migrations, there were several, and the Arab one was only the last. Prior to that there were Greek, Roman, and Assyrian invasions. These always led to southward migrations by African populations. Go and read Olumide Lucas. This has been the most enlightened Nigerian historical chronicler in my view. He wrote The Religion of the Yorubas. In that book, he traces the Yorubas' history straight to ancient Egypt, using a variety of proofs comprising oral and written history, artefacts, and linguistics. bokohalal: Three fallacies here.
The Oba was not arrested in His Palace as the British already burnt it down.
Oba Ovonramwen is not the LAST Oba of Benin Kingdom. There is a reigning Oba .
The Yorubas are not from Benin .
.

Good that you made these observations.

Yorubas are not Binis and Binis are not yourbas. I happen to be a hybrid. But in many parts of the world royal families are related. This can be through marriage, conquest, inheritance etc. For example all Eurpoean royal families are related to Queen Elizabeth of England.

Ododuwa did not found the Yoruba race. Yorubas (as they are called today)existed for milllenia before Ododuwa came barely 1000 years ago.
Ododuwa more or less united many people via ruling houses of his descendants.
Not all yorubas are "biological" descendants of Oduduwa. Political, spiritual descendants yes. And there are direct Ododuwa descendants in Western Igboland and many parts of Niger Delta via Benin royal family and ruling houses of Benin Royal descendants. I am one of them.

The people of the SW were not even called Yoruba then and spoke many perhaps related but not really mutually intelligible dialects. You were Awori, Oyo, etc, then.

I think people should ditch all these supremacy nonesense. I cherish all my origins and none is superior to the other.

Have you heard of Diodorus Sicilus? He was a Greek historian who visited Egypt around 60 BC. He later visited 'Ethiopia' which was the Greek term for Africa south of the Sahara. He recorded his experiences in a volume of books called the Bibiliotheke Historica.

Read on:

Diodorus devoted an entire chapter of his world history, the Bibliotheke Historica, or Library of History (Book 3), to the Kushites ["Aithiopians"] of Meroe. Here he repeats the story of their great piety, their high favor with the gods, and adds the fascinating legend that they were the first of all men created by the gods and were the founders of Egyptian civilization, invented writing, and had given the Egyptians their religion and culture. (3.3.2).

"Now they relate that of all people the Aithiopians [Ethiopians] were the earliest, and say that the proofs of this are clear. That they did not arrive as immigrants but are the natives of the country and therefore rightly are called authochthonous is almost universally accepted. That those who live in the South are likely to be the first engendered by the earth is obvious to all. For as it was the heat of the sun that dried up the earth while it was still moist, at the time when everything came into being, and caused life, they say it is probable that it was the region closest to the sun that first bore animate beings".

Diodorus continues:

"They further write that it was among them that people were first taught to honor the gods and offer sacrifices and arrange processions and festivals and perform other things by which people honor the divine. For this reason their piety is famous among all men, and the sacrifices among the Aithiopians are believed to be particularly pleasing to the divinity,"

[b]"The Aithiopians [Ethiopians] say that the Egyptians are settlers from among themselves and that Osiris was the leader of the settlement. The customs of the Egyptians, they say, are for the most part Aithiopian, the settlers having preserved their old traditions. For to consider the kings gods, to pay great attention to funeral rites, and many other things, are Aithiopian practices, and also the style of their statues and the form of their writing are Aithiopian. Also the way the priestly colleges are organized is said to be the same in both nations. For all who have to do with the cult of the gods, they maintain, are [ritually] pure: the priests are shaved in the same way, they have the same robes and the type of scepter shaped like a plough, which also the kings have, who use tall pointed felt hats ending in a knob, with the snakes that they call the asp (aspis) coiled round them."

"There are also numerous other Aithiopian tribes [i.e. besides those centered at Meroe]; some live along both sides of the river Nile and on the islands in the river, others dwell in the regions that border on Arabia [i.e. to the east], others again have settled in the interior of Libya [i.e. to the west]. The majority of these tribes, in particular those who live along the river, have black skin, snub-nosed faces, and curly hair".[/b]

What about Aristotle?

Aristotle (384-322 B.C.E.) Greek philosopher, scientist, and tutor to Alexander the Great.
Aristotle is said to have written 150 philosophical treatises.

"Too black a hue marks the coward as witness Egyptians and Ethiopians and so does also too white a complexion as you may see from women, the complexion of courage is between the two."
(Physiognomics, Vol. VI, 812a)

Aristotle makes reference to the hair form of Egyptians and Ethiopians: "Why are the Ethiopians and Egyptians bandy-legged? Is it because the bodies of living creatures become distorted by heat, like logs of wood when they become dry? The condition of their hair supports this theory; for it is curlier than that of other nations, and curliness is as it were crookedness of the hair."
(Physiognomics, Book XIV, p. 317)

The Evidence of Lucian

The evidence of Lucian (Greek writer, 125 B.C.) is as explicit as that of the previous writers. He introduces two Greeks, Lycinus and Timolaus, who start a conversation:

Lycinus (describing a young Egyptian): "This boy is not merely black; he has thick lips and his legs are too thin . . . his hair worn in a plait behind shows that he is not a freeman."

Timolaus: "But that is a sign of really distinguished birth in Egypt, Lycinus, All freeborn children plait their hair until they reach manhood. It is the exact opposite of the custom of our ancestors who thought it seemly for old men to secure their hair with a gold brooch to keep it in place."
(Lucian, Navigations, paras 2-3)

The testimony of Herodotus (born in 490 BC and known in Europe as 'The Father of History')

''There can be no doubt that the Colchians are an Egyptian race. Before I heard any mention of the fact from others, I had remarked it myself. After the thought had struck me, I made inquiries on the subject both in Colchis and in Egypt, and I found that the Colchians had a more distinct recollection of the Egyptians, than the Egyptians had of them. Still the Egyptians said that they believed the Colchians to be descended from the army of Sesostris. My own conjectures were founded, first, on the fact that they are black-skinned and have woolly hair, which certainly amounts to but little, since several other nations are so too. But further and more especially, on the circumstance that the Colchians, the Egyptians, and the Ethiopians, are the only nations who have practised circumcision from the earliest times.''

(Herodotus, The Histories, Book 2:104)

See, this is the HISTORY you learn when you look beyond those limited Nigerian historians. You learn about the Africa of THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO. You then trace from back then, to the present, tracing migratory paths, linguistic connections etc, in order to know who ended up where... Which of the 'Ethiopians' ended up in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal etc etc. The cultural connections are THERE. Olumide Lucas for instance discovered at least 250 Yoruba words that mean exactly the same thing in Medu Neter, the ancient Egyptian language. He also stated that ALL the gods of Egypt were known in Yorubaland in name, attribute or both. Similar analysis reveals the same with regard to groups like the Igbo, Ewe, Ashanti, Wolof, Igbo and other West and Central African tongues, showing a shared origin with ancient Nile Valley civilizations.

AND ALL YOUR QUOTES BELOW THE ONE OF ARISTOTLE DO NOT DENOTE RACIAL CHARACTERISTICS! PLEATING WAS A PART OF THE CELTIC CULTURE, INDIAN CULTURE, EVEN CHINESE CULTURE AS ORDAINED BY THE MANCHU EMPIRE! IT WAS DONE WORLDWIDE NAD COUL HAVE ESILY BEEN BORRWOED BY THE EGYPTIANS FROM NEIGHBOURING GROUPS!

AND THERE WERE MANY TRIBES LIVING SOUTH OF THE NILE! DONT FORGET THAT! THE AETHIOPIANS ARE THE ETHIOPIANS! AND BTW DIDOSYIUS ACCOUNTS WERE ALWAYS IN THE FORM OF TRAVELOGUES. THEY ARE NOT CONCRETE EVIDENCES. THOUGH HE CLEARLY CONFUSED BETWEEN THE NAMES! + THEY ARE VERY AMATEURISH ACCOUNTS.[/b]

King Tutunkhamun was a Nubian? His mum Queen Tiye was a Nubian? The Sphinx (Pharaoh Khufu) was a Nubian? Pharaoh Narmer too was a Nubian? This shows you know next to nothing about Egypt. The fact you couldn't recognise those figures I posted as the authentic EGYPTIANS they were. Is 'Nubian' the name you call black Egyptians whom you do not wish to call Egyptians because your white master has taught you the Egyptians were white folks?

That dross you posted above is NOT authentic tomb art, and where it is, there is clear evidence of 'whitewashing' of images. Also Egyptian artists often depicted women as lighter than men, as an artistic convention to differentiate them. Had nothing to do with them being 'white'.

We know a LOT of 'tampering' has been done with Egyptian artefacts to disguise their black Africannness. Such as blowing/scraping off the flat noses on most artefacts to create racial ambiguity.

FINALLY, if as you claim the Egyptians were not blacks, WHY ON EARTH DO ALL the Greek historians and explorers from the period describe them as BLACK?

Not ONE ancient historian describes the Egyptians as white or pale-skinned. They ALL describe the Egyptians as BLACK. And they were eyewitnesses.

They could be Hausas or they could be Yorubas from the Lagos colony. Both were used in the invasion.

Those guys are NOT Yorubas! PhysicsPHD/QED/NFT/OPP, my Bini hubby, please don't look for my trouble. cheesy

The English bastards were cunning enough to use their conscripted forces from outside the Nigerian area.

Most of the noses and face are scraped after the islamic invasion since its haram to depict faces explicitly.

Egyptian men were also depicted brown skinned, except that some of them were slightly darker brown due to long hers working in the scorching heat. its obvious!

Both groups were used during the invasion, although the Hausas were predominant among the African troops. There were also significant numbers of Yorubas that fought alongside the Ologbosere, Ebohon, and Oviawe in the resistance after the conquest. This is covered in some books (such as Robert Home's book City of Blood Revisited: A New Look at the Benin Expedition of 1897).

You are a slave and a tool of western distortion of African history, PRETENDING to be an Afrocentrist.

But bear in mind..... I AM NOT A LIAR! I WONT LIE TO UPHOLD MY SKIN COLOUR LIKE WHAT YOU ARE DOING HERE!

Sure, the scores of Greek historians who visited Egypt and described the inhabitants as blacks were also 'lying' to 'uphold your skin colour'. Dunce.

You an ignorant goat with no common sense. Even as the pictures of various shades of black Africans are staring at you in the pics I posted, your drug-addled brain still does not get it, that Egyptians were a black African society by all definitions of the term.

and use your brain! if they scrape of the nose, it will look less pointed and more SUb-Saharan!

No. You use YOUR brain (assuming you have one). If they scrape off the noses it looks like anything you want it to look like, including white or Arab. They can be passed off as other races. With the original flat nose in place, they could not. That is why they scraped off the noses..

Most of the noses and face are scraped after the islamic invasion since its haram to depict faces explicitly.

Regardless of their 'reasons', it shows the present Arab occupiers of Egypt were not the original Egyptians. They would never destroy artefacts that really belonged to them.

Egyptian men were also depicted brown skinned, except that some of them were slightly darker brown due to long hours working in the scorching heat. its obvious!

Stop talking rubbish. Which race of people can you look at today and say ''Oh they're actually light brown but only got black because of long hours working in the scorching heat''? NONE! It is a ridiculous nonsense. Garbage, beer parlour explanation that lacks any merit whatsoever. Egyptians were the way they looked ie negroid, because that was their natural hue.

HOW CAN A HISTORIAN BE AN EYEWITNESS! MY GODS! WHATS RONG WITH YOU:?!

How can ahistorian not be an eyewitnes? I said it before you are oin drugs and it shows through your muddled, befuddled reasoning.

EGYPTIANS WERE NOT WHITE/PALE SKINNED! THEY WERE SAND COLOURED! BROWN!

Apollodorus, the Greek philosopher, described Egypt as "the country of the black-footed ones" and the Latin historian Ammianus Marcellinus said "the men of Egypt are mostly brown or black with a skinny desiccated look."

"Ancient Egypt was a Negro civilisation. The history of Black Africa will remain suspended in the air and cannot be written correctly until African historians dare to connect it with the history of Egypt. The African historian who evades the problem of Egypt is neither modest nor objective nor unruffled. He is ignorant, cowardly and neurotic. The ancient Egyptians were Negroes. The moral fruit of their civilisation is to be counted among the assets of the Black world."

Cheikh Anta Diop, taken from The African Origin of Civilisation.

MY GODS SOME ONE PLZ EXPLAIN TO THIS NINCOMPOOP, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BROWN , BLACK AND WHITE

No. Somebody needs to explain to your thick skull that black and brown mean NEGROID PEOPLE otherwise known as BLACKS. There is no ''brown race'' in existence anywhere on earth. Black Africans come in various shades of black and that variety was WELL REPRESENTED IN EGYPT as shown inter alia by the ancient testimony and artefacts.

i guess the real debate is what is white to a white man and black to a white man and what is black to a black man and white to a black man. e.g the lebanese in nigeria are termed to be whote by most lay men but i am sure no white person will term the lebanese to be of caucasian origin likewise we have some fulani people that have a very light complexion but will never be termed white by anybody so i really do think its an issue of context of who was observing and reporting said history

My brother, the Egyptians themselves described themselves as black (Kemmui). Their country as 'black nation' (Kemet). The hieroglyph form was of a stick charred at both ends. The Edfu text on which they write about their origins states ''from the south we came, led by Osiris. From the mountains of the moon we came''. The mountains of the moon? That is the Ruwenzori mountain range in TANZANIA and UGANDA. The Egyptians stated that this was where their ancestors came from.
