There is growing evidence that the delusion of religion causes significant social dysfunction. Statistical research is revealing the problems that go with religious delusion. For example, a recent article in the Journal of Religion and Society points out that religion is correlated to the significant social difficulties that we can see in todays World:

Let's ignore the ill effects of religion around the world over the last several decades. We have Muslims killing Christians (and vice versa), Jews killing Muslims (and vice versa), Protestants killing Catholics (and vice versa), Shiites killing Sunnis (and vice versa), etc., etc. All of it is completely pointless, because all human gods are imaginary. But let's ignore all of that killing and destruction.

Let's also ignore all of the insanity that religion has brought us through the ages -- the crusades, the witch hunts and all the rest.

And let's ignore all the people that religion oppresses -- the women, the people who have been enslaved, the people who happen to be homosexual, etc. Let's ignore it because it is all water under the bridge.

It has to be obvious that God is imaginary, then why might half of the population profess belief in God?

This question is fascinating. Why would we, as a species, create all of this mythology and nonsense over and over again through the millennia? We must do it for a reason.

If we can understand the reasons and deal with them rationally rather than through the silliness and mythology that is religion, we actually can do ourselves a great deal of good.

There are two important reasons why humans fabricate all of our religions:

People invent God as a way to cope with death. Many humans are terrified by death for some reason. They invent religion as a way to deal with their terror.

People invent God as a proxy for goodness. People want a way to promote "goodness" and eliminate "evil" in their societies. In the past, inventing an imaginary God has been perceived to be one way to facilitate that process.

Death and goodness are important to people. They touch on fundamental human emotions. If we can separate death and goodness from the mythology of God so that we can understand them and work with them in a positive way, we can actually do something very helpful. We can create a rational world for ourselves that is focused on benefiting mankind.

It is down to death and goodness. We need to understand the reasons why we fabricate our gods and then act on these reasons rationally.

Religion is delusion. A planet full of delusional people is not healthy.

Rev, I do believe you're following me! Taunting me even! How did I earn such a disease! You must find me a worthy adversary. But you my friend, are an unworthy opponent. grin

Fun and games aside, let's address your points:-

1. The first four paragraphs speak to religion, and its ill effects, and it is a valid point.

However it does not support the statment that "it has to be obvious that God is imaginary", since no where is this explained previously.

2. The next couple paragraphs are opinion, not fact based findings.

There is a gaping hole in this argument, and it is flawed because it starts off discussing the ills of religion, interjects a few opinions about the reality of God, and ends again with the effects of religion "religion causes delusion".

It seems to be trying to address two unrelated issues into one; the existence of God and the effects of man made religion.

I totally agree that religious fanatacism is one of the majoy causes for wars and contention. I have always stood by this. So Im not sure what point you're trying to get across exactly.

Is it the opinion of the non existence of God? Or is it the fact the man made religion causes delusion and hystical behaviour?

@ rezzy

So are you saying that MouthAction with your husband is wrong?

Secondly, since we are now under the new covenant, why are you still conforming to the law of the Levites?
This is only for Jews who did not receive Jesus as the messiah my dear?

Paul said that it's not what a man puts into his mouth that defiles him but what comes out.
So that's erroneous teaching.  You have liberty to eat whatever you want, unless what you eat causes a brother to stumble.  Didn't Paul say if a man puts food before you bless it and eat it? Unless you ask if it was offered to idols and they say yes, well, then you eat in sin (or something like that)
Re: What Did You Learn At Church Today? by trinigirl1(f): 2:57pm On Dec 27, 2006
Of course you didn't get the scripture in the Bible that says don't perform MouthAction on your partner. It doesn't exist!!
Geez . Why these pastors try to put yokes around people's necks I will never understand!

In James where it says your mouth can defile you, my dear, it meant that what a man speaks can defile him. For example lying, evil communication, causing discord etc. Not what he eats.

My dear, please read the chapter and understand the context before you do things in error abeg.

@Trini_Girl

So you are a clever bunny after all cheesy You have made some valuable statements in the last couple of posts.

That is the very such nonsense that I am fighting against. People with the mentality of 'Rezzy' who have real hang-ups regarding healthy sexual function and religion. They always have to combine the two and brand everbody a sinner for the slightest cause.

I am not following you by the way, not yet , maybe when I come to Trinidad for the pot test drive you promised me grin grin grin

@trini_girl So what you are saying in essence is that we should ignore the old laws for the new? Law is law whether in the old testament or not ,whether to the jews or not provided its that same bible you are using. MouthAction with your husband in the name of style can defile you.though i didnt get the passage of the bible to prove it but wil try and get it

(Strange, I thought  the marriage bed was undefiled)

Child, please don't bother, you're making me sick enough with your asinine concepts and religious bullshit!  I have always heard that Nigerian women are anal retentive when it comes to sex, and I now see why.

What nonsense am I seeing here!

Common sense is truly not a common thing! So you can't figure out for yourself that a new contract between two parties make the old one null and void. Chineke! Stupid stupid girl! It's so simple.  Why we try to complicate
God like this I will never understand.  Why do these pastors manipulate people to do what they want using the word of God.  It's enough to make me vomit!

Anyway, I don't blame you, the pastor must want all the women running to him begging for his hand, after your husbands have abandoned you because of poor sex and a diet of only fufu and egusi soup, since everything else will defile him.

Sorry for your husband or any man who has the misfortune of having to sleep with you.

I can see it now

Hot husband: Honey please now, abeg, it's just like licking ice cream, please honey, just once, just try.
Rezzy: My pastor said pleasing my husband will defile my body! Do you want me to go to hell?

Hot husband: But baby, I am your husband, aren't you supposed to submit to me?
Rezzy: Well, the Bible says so yes, but let me check with pastor first to make sure. I'm sure there's a
scripture that can get me out of submitting to this! Just can't remember it now.

Hot husband during sex: Darling, can we try a different position besides missionary today?
Rezzy: Are you mad?? Am I a prostitute? Do you want me to defile myself I am your wife not a LovePeddler!

Hot husband: Love of my life, can we have sex today? After all, its Thursday.
Rezzy: Well ok, but let's pray first!

cry poor man!

It's better if you just check yourself into the church and live a life of prayer and fasting.  Please, don't put a man through the agony of marriage to you.

In the meantime, your pastor will enjoy his pick from the congregation and defile himself with some roast fowl (sexual position), gooti look back (my personal favourite) grin , and spider web sex action with his wife.

Nonsense!

Rev, reading Rezzy's post I fear that you're right to some degree. It's a sad state of affairs. However this doesn't mean that we're still not at war. This is just a little truce, had my pot fix today (*cough cough*)

@trini_girl You can as well get an adult/blue film to learn different style for you to satisfy your husband. I think you also need a pastor to make you understand the scripture.
Re: What Did You Learn At Church Today? by trinigirl1(f): 7:05pm On Dec 28, 2006
Rezzy,

Are you in your right senses? Do you have half a brain? So now you're saying it's ok to watch some Ron Jeremy to get all riled up and rauncy for your huzzy.  Won't that defile you eyes??

I don't even watch pornography or advocate it.  It's sexual immorality at it's peak. Sex for money.

So it's ok to watch how to give head, but it's not okay to give your man head.  lol!!! You're confused.

Little girl, go back to the "Name that Song" and "Alphabet Game" forums where you belong.

Return here when you have something intelligent and uplifting to contribute or even contend.

--------

I don't need a pastor, all I need is God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to discern truth from the folly your so called pastor is feeding you.  You would do well not to look to man for what must come from God.

Rev, why do we even bother ,
Re: What Did You Learn At Church Today? by Reverend(m): 7:31pm On Dec 28, 2006
@Rezzy

The Bible was written by man and even though some of the stories are cute and carry sensible messages relating to how to treat people and live out lives, it is definitely not a handbook on sex and sexual relationships.

It is irresponsible to base ones sex life on a man written book like the Bible. It is no different to somebody having sex on the basis of what is written in any of the Harry Potter books. Utter nonsense.

We should not mix religion and sex. It is not a healthy practice at all and can lead to many problems and hang-ups.

Take for an example the Vatican's irresponsible actions over the use of condoms, even though there is an aids epidemic spreading across Africa. Religion and sex should be clearly kept appart. Look at all the priest abusing and raping young children!

The church has not place or right to lecture on the subject of sex.

A good example of the problems caused have been shown by your attitude and writings in this thread. You have decided to link passages in the Bible to whether or not you give someone a Mouth Gig!

KEEP THE BIBLE AWAY FROM THE BEDROOM!

Re: What Did You Learn At Church Today? by agent0(m): 4:22am On Jan 06, 2007
I was once a lost and empty soul with nothing to live for. I had tried everything, including hinduism, drugs, atheism and many other of mankind's vile enticements, but found no joy, happiness or peace in any of them. Then I heard about a savior who died for my sins and who would forgive me of them and give me a new life, a new heart and a new purpose. While I was skeptical at first and had all but made the decision to end my life, God had other plans and drew me to Him and breathed new life into my soul. As I grew in my faith, the Bible took on a new understanding and revelation in my life. And the truth and wisdom of God's Words have grown to become even more profound and true as the years have gone by as His Holy Spirit continues to lead me in the paths of righteousness and away from sin and depravity. Now He uses me to spread the same good news to all who have ears to hear and eyes to see, I call that a miracle,

Summary:

God's promises of His "firsts" stand firm for believers:

1. He made us the firstfruits of His creatures (James 1:18)

2. We have the firstfruits (best part) of the Spirit (Rom. 8:23)

3. God can be depended on throughout the years of our lives if we truly seek first His Kingdom (Matt. 6:33) and make Him number one in all things (Matt. 22:37-38).
