Louis and Helen arrived home and sighted a Toyota Avensis parked by their home- Visitors!! They got in and saw Uncle Tunde aka Uncle Tee. He was their dad's younger brother. He came all the way from Benin City. They loved him and could never forget him as he pampered them his own way. They ran into his arms in excitement.

" Wow, you guys are now big than before. You want to catch up with my height before you reach 18 years ehn Louis." He teased and then hugged them both.

He spent the night with them and they had fun, he played some video games with them both and then rounded off the night in a lengthy discussion with his senior brother. They laughed and chatted late, talking about Benin City and its vibe.

The next morning, Uncle tee took off, but after dropping his nephew and niece at school. He however avoided answering directly when they asked about how their mum was. He assured them that their dad would set things straight soon enough. They felt reassured and waved back at him as he set off.



Just after the first break, Mr Lambert walked into the JSS2 classroom with a file in his hand.

" Listen attentively. " The class became silent almost suddenly,though a few whispers could be heard.

" These are the names of those that made the Junior football team. "

"Seun
Gbenga
Samuel and Louis....and the young girls as well.... Khafayat and Lola. Meet me in the hall by the second break. " And he walked out and headed to the next class to announce in like manner.

Classes were soon loosing their taste, blame it on the timing of the competition. The 45-minutes suddenly looked like hours to some, others unperturbed as long as there was divided attention. Super mario's sudden appearance were having little influence during this time.

That day, as soon as Louis and Helen got home, their dad told Louis to quickly prepare to follow him to the Supermarket. They were expecting visitors! When they got back home, they offloaded the 'booty' into the freezer and storeroom respectively.


" Who are we expecting dad? " Louis asked.


" Your big uncles, aunts and et cetera. "


" Isnt 6-cartoons of canned drinks too much? This party must be cool. "

No answer.


" And dad, Louis stopped in between to break the good news as his dad was about leaving. I made the school football team. "


" Hmm! "


" Whats Hmm? "


" Jay Jay Okocha! " Mr Ezey teased his son.


" No i'm Aghahowa. " He smiled back.


" Why not YAKUBU? " And they both laughed heartily.

" What about you Helen, did you.... "

" No dad, i'm not interested." Helen said.

" Yet you support Liverpool FC, Daddy's girl! "

They both ran out and Mr Ezey heaved. He couldnt feel like telling them those they were expecting. Tunde has briefed him about it, just before he was officially informed by the Elders of his father's family. Life they say, must go on. He whistled Lionel Richie's All Night Long before he went on with what he was engaged in prior to going out with his son.

Mr Ezey gave Bola instructions prior to the arrival of his relatives. He took Helen out along with him to one of his Tiles warehouse in the City's vibrant Capital- Ikeja.

She walked in and around and felt like the boss. She could see her father's neatness policy was strictly adhered to among his employees.

She watched as trucks loaded bulks of decorated tiles and headed off after bargaining and settling in cash. She overhead a conversation between her dad and a caller. Business as usual. She suddenly remembered she loved Saturdays, and this was no different. Her father hung up and announced to his chief employee, Friday that a new Hotel under construction needed their services and ordered them to select bulks of tiles that they'l transport to site.

As they both left, Mr Ezey got a sms alert on his mobile set. Half the contract sum have been deposited as earlier agreed. He informed Friday to start transporting and call him when they got there. Helen picked her dad's set and saw the bank alert. It was 1.6 million Naira!!. She scanned her father's face for any sign of excitement, but could register none. How would he not be surprised about such? She began playing a game on his Tab when an incoming call interrupted her again.

A young man in shorts and no top walked out of the basketball court. He sat on a pavement facing the court and dialled a line.

"Hello Big bros! Yay! " A voice he recognised screamed through and he was soon smiling.

" Helen! Wow! Hello Sister! Wassup with you " Bolu wiped the sweat with his towel and stood up to leave the court area.

" I know this call is because you're coming, true or false? "

" Wow, smart as ever, yeah. How is Louis. Hope you guys are cool. Missed you guys but i'l be seeing you soon. "

" Dad wants to talk with you. "

" Hello Bolu, Bawo ni, nigbawo lefe gbera bayii? "

" Soon, in about erm.... Three hours from now dad. "

" Okay. And do be quick as well "

" Yes dad. " Bolu bellowed back.

The call ended and he stood up and headed for his hostel room.

" Courtney! Courney!! I'm all set man. " Bolu shouted at his friend who was still enjoying the basketball game.

Courtney grew up in the United Kingdom. He came home to suprisingly school after much pressure from relatives that wont just mind their business. But he was soon finding life interesting at Integrity High, Ibadan. Bolu was his best friend after they met on the basketball court.

Integrity High operated a dual-boarding system. Students of different class, tribe , and mentality came to get educated in an enabling eviron. Though stealing and burgling of lockers aka Jacking, was rampant, the new security measure put in place by the school authorities to stop the embarassing act only reduced it to the barest minimum. Every security system had their breaches. It took patience on the part of ' thieving students ' to find that out.


The Lower Area, as the sport region of the school was called,served both track and field event even as the school planned laying a clay track to beautify the area. Bolu was in SS1, same with Courtney who still had his foreign accent. They were always seen moving together.

Courtney abandoned his game and escorted Bolu off.

" Tell Wura i'l call her man. " said Bolu.

" Okay mon, No p! As much as you bring back something worth chewing. "

" Okay." and he stopped a bus that drove him to where he'd take a bus shuttle to Lagos. Its been 2years he last saw home. He smiled as the journey began. Home was Home.

Bolu arrived Lagos and bought his sister's favourite Chocolate. Then he took a cab direct home from Ojota Park. The City wore a totally different look since he last saw it, and he felt like a stranger a.k.a JJC. He asked for prices to items he previously had in memory and it made him feel uneasy until he took the cab. Unless one had a photographic memory, you wont be able to recognise places you once knew before.

As he passed through the metropolis, he saw a bus conductor bleeding from a deep mouthcut. Some fellows were struggling to hold down a huge looking fellow who cursed back at the daring conductor. Definitely it was more than getting your transport fare change!! Bolu smiled to himself.


Silently after alighting from the cab, Bolu crept into the compound. The idea of surprising his siblings got stronger as he neared home. He looked about the compound and remembered the time it was still bush. He was five years old then. Now he was seventeen.

" Biggest guy! " Louis shouted from the balcony, bringing Bolu back to reality. " You want to silently walk in and scare me as before? Not gonna happen brother! " Louis chuckled.

" Can you fly from there? " Bolu teased.

" Hmm "

" Helen I'm home! " Bolu called our as he scaled the stairs.

" Yeeeeeehhhhh!! " Helen screamed and jumped on her elder brother, throwing her full weight on him. He quickly regained balance before they both fell onto the couch.

" You all are..... "

" Hmm " Louis interrupted excitingly as he viewed the changes Boarding-life had done to his brother.

" Where's dad? " Helen was already ransacking through his bag for her snacks.

" He's out, guess he told you we're having visitors. Our relatives are coming over, including Grandpa. " Helen explained as she saw her chocolate bars.

" Aha! Ahaa!! Bolu! , big big Bolu. " it was Aunty Bose.

" Aunty Bose !" Bolu got up and hugged her warmly.

" Two years and i almost feel like a stranger in my own City.

They happily entertained their brother and soon Helen was asking about tales from his school. Tiring, but he cheerfully did. He missed them both. They were the main reason he daily thought about their mum. He contacted her secretly without his father's knowledge.

" BB ! " Louis barged in to interrupt the tale-telling. Bolu was secretly grateful.

" oh! Dont interrupt our lovely brother-sister conversation please. " Helen grumbled.

" BB, you want to see who the ' Lord of the gamepad' is? "

" erm, Louis you never can tell yet. You might just be the 'subject' as usual. "

" No bets, just an open game."

Gladly Bolu left to join Louis and beckoned to Helen to come along as well. Afterwards, aunty Bose briefed Bolu about the matter on ground, and he affirmed his awareness of the situation.

Mr Ezey drove towards a friend's house after the service. He branched at the Goodtimes Restaurant to buy some coveted loaves of ' Goodtimes Bread ' . The bakery sales superseded the canteen sales as the bread was in high demand. Its aroma and taste made many to not bother spending #500/loaf. It attracted its customers. The manager of the restaurant had to initiate a tally system to enable customers get what they wanted; two long queues, all because of some loaf! They arent that crazy. But they were.

Helen narrated the incident of the day. Her father smiled and agreed that sleep must be served its purpose. It made his reminisce his University days in Ibadan.

Baba Luku, the bus driver relied heavily on his gin to stay awake that fateful day. Mr Ola sat beside him at the front. The driver dozed on several occasions during the 3-hour journey from Lagos to Ibadan. His eyes doth faileth him!!


" Baba yi ma pa wa!! Akoko wa o ti de lati ku " [ Baba dont kill us all! Our time to die isnt now ]. And Baba Luku would sip more gin as though some metaphysical powers emanated from it through his body. Then he'l adjust and increase speed, only for it to reduce gradually in the next 15 minutes. BABA HAS FALLEN ASLEEP AGAIN!!!

This caused anaccident a few kilometres to their destination. Baba's head which had been fighting sleep suddenly collapsed on the steering wheel.



Pandemonium was let loose as passengers cried in their local dialects to their gods. A fulani man began chanting some unknown words in his native tongue. Mr Ezey was lost in thought. In a flash of seconds, the rudderless vehicle ran into some bush. Mr Ezey remembered turning the wheel to the left just in time to avoid plunging into a wide hole.

The bus balanced on a tree with its head facing the road. He felt blood on his arm,and he jumped out the window. Three women had fainted and the Mallam smiled at him where he sat, unmoving. He hastingly opened the door and the Mallam fell straight into his weak arms. He wasnt smiling ! He also had fainted.
