Hello,

I'm working on a modification to our rules that will make it an offence to disrespect government officials and call them derogatory names on Nairaland. The objective is to prepare Nairaland for a time when the Nigerian Government may not be able to tolerate such things. Currently it's against our rules to deliberately insult a Nairaland member, so we will just be extending this rule to make it cover government officials too.
What are your comments on this? I promise to read all your comments, though I can't promise to reply all of them, of course.

Thanks!
Pls do.u dont need to be told to do such.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION, YOU CANNOT TAKE AWAY FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

The government tried with FELA and they failed.

Fela is celebrated every year now because he had the guts look into the thieving politicians and dictators in the face and tell them exactly what they are....

It is a pity that no one has been able to decode what Seun is actually trying to achieve.

In the last few days Ngwakwe has been using scare tactics to intimidate Nlanders. He keeps saying that the election of Buhari will lead to censorship and that is what Seun is trying to now use as a strategy to further demonize Buhari

Please critically evaluate this statement by Seun

The objective is to prepare Nairaland for a time when the Nigerian Government may not be able to tolerate such things

This is getting pathetic by the day

But of all the uselessness that exists on Nairaland, this is what he thinks should be done. I advise anyone who catches Seun when he's up to these kinds of things to screen capture, munch, screen-grab it before he can delete his posts/threads/anyone who quotes him, as he is VERY PRONE to doing.

You would think he had been hacked, if you hadn't seen this kind of rubbish in the past. Document this.

Remember the thread where he said he would censor anything negative about the Nigerian army and frontpage anything positive, even if it was false? Oh, wait, he DELETED IT.

Hello,

The objective is to prepare Nairaland for a time when the Nigerian Government may not be able to tolerate such things. Currently it's against our rules to deliberately insult a Nairaland member, so we will just be extending this rule to make it cover government officials too.

What are your comments on this? I promise to read all your comments, though I can't promise to reply all of them, of course.

Thanks!

Offensive? Yes! Derogatory? Yes! Sometimes threatening, sickening and belittling? Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! But in the end, people should be allowed to say what they want to and get it off their chest. In effect, what you're proposing is tantamount to asking people to ONLY praise Govt officials. Some people want to insult Buhari because they feel he deserves it, let them insult him all they want. If they feel like GEJ is the best thing to happen since slice bread---and Buhari supporters think GEJ has the I.Q of a crooked 3-legged table and the thieving skills of a hundred Maddoffs'--- for God's sake let everyone feel free to express their opinion. You want to make it fair? Then ban the praise of Govt officials too, so you can't praise or criticize them, and it'll all be balanced.

Doesn't make sense, right? Exactly!

Of course the Government (or Seun himself) can/should prohibit speech/writing that i.e: threatens physical arm, or leads to incitation resulting in violence against another. BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE SOLELY FOR PROTECTING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS!!! Such law should be structured primarily to protect the ordinary citizens from everyday violence, physical and verbal abuse that they suffer in the hands of public law enforcement officials, teachers, bus drivers, everyday. Such a law will also protect the citizens---and in effect the whole country--- from polarizing figures like Asari Dokubo and Dr.Junaid Ibrahim. Theirs are the kinds of speech that needs to be stifled. When the citizens are safe, the Government is safe and doesn't have much to worry about and can even walk in the streets and nobody will notice them. But when the Govt doesn't carry out its primary duties of welfare and security for the citizens, of course it will fear free speech. A Govt that is taking care of business will not care about simple words to the extent that it will propose banning it.

Let people speak.

p.s: Also, if you're really serious about banning insults then refrain from posting articles or topics that would bring up such reaction in the first place. You can't expect people to think the same and agree on every topic, there will always be opposing views. So, either ban it all or accept it in its entirety with a few minor tweaks here and there.
